Chain Extender-induced Hydrogen Bonding Organization Determines the Morphology and Properties of Thermoplastic Polycarbonate Polyurethane

Thermoplastic polycarbonate polyurethanes(PCUs) are multiblock copolymers that have been applied for medical devices for long time. Aliphatic diols are common chain extenders(CE) involved in the composition of the hard segments of PCU. However, limited knowledge was discovered about how the chemical structure of CE affects the hydrogen bonding organization within PCUs and their mechanical properties.To investigate this problem, a group of PCUs were synthesized respectively by extending the polymer chain with 1,4-butanediol(BDO),aminoethanol(MEA), ethanediol(EO) as three kinds of chain extenders. Tiny differences in the CE chemical structure results in remarkable variations in phase separation, condensed morphologies, thermal and mechanical properties, which are characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, atomic force microscopy, small-angle X-ray scattering, differential scanning calorimetry, and tensile tests. The microstructural evolution during unilateral deformation and the different mechanism induced by the different CEs was probed and unveil by in situ wide-and small-angle X-ray diffraction. Symmetry of CE can improve the organization of the hydrogen bonding. The coherence strength of the urethane/urea group also plays a key role by comparing the two PCUs with ethanediol and aminoethanol.

Incidence of surgical site infection in minimally invasive colorectal surgery

BACKGROUND Surgical site infection(SSI)is a common complication of colorectal surgery.Minimally invasive surgery notably reduces the incidence of SSI.This study aimed to compare the incidences of SSI after robot-assisted colorectal surgery(RACS)vs that after laparoscopic assisted colorectal surgery(LACS)and to analyze associated risk factors for SSI in minimally invasive colorectal surgery.AIM To compare the incidences of SSI after RACS and LACS,and to analyze the risk factors associated with SSI after minimally invasive colorectal surgery.METHODS Clinical data derived from patients who underwent minimally invasive colorectal surgery between October 2020 and October 2022 at the First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University were collated.Differences in clinical characteristics and surgeryrelated information associated with RACS and LACS were compared,and possible risk factors for SSI were identified.RESULTS A total of 246 patients(112 LACS and 134 RACS)were included in the study.Fortythree(17.5%)developed SSI.The proportions of patients who developed SSI were similar in the two groups(17.9%vs 17.2%,P=0.887).Diabetes mellitus,intraoperative blood loss≥100 mL,and incision length were independent risk factors for SSI.Possible additional risk factors included neoadjuvant therapy,lesion site,and operation time.CONCLUSION There was no difference in SSI incidence in the RACS and LACS groups.Diabetes mellitus,intraoperative blood loss≥100 mL,and incision length were independent risk factors for postoperative SSI.

On abelian 2-ramification torsion modules of quadratic fields

For a number field F and a prime number p, the Z_(p)-torsion module of the Galois group of the maximal abelian pro-p extension of F unramified outside p over F, denoted by T_(p)(F), is an important subject in the abelian p-ramification theory. In this paper, we study the group T_(2)(F) = T_(2)(m) of the quadratic field F = Q(m_(1/2)). Firstly, assuming m > 0, we prove an explicit 4-rank formula for quadratic fields that rk4(T_(2)(-m))= rk2(T_(2)(-m))-rank(R), where R is a certain explicitly described Rédei matrix over F_(2). Furthermore, using this formula, we obtain the 4-rank density formula of T_(2)-groups of imaginary quadratic fields. Secondly, for l an odd prime, we obtain the results about the 2-power divisibility of orders of T_(2)(±l) and T_(2)(±2l), both of which are cyclic 2-groups. In particular, we find that #T_(2)(l) ≡ 2#T_(2)(2l) ≡ h_(2)(-2l)(mod 16) if l ≡ 7(mod 8),where h_(2)(-2l) is the 2-class number of Q((-2l)_(1/2)). We then obtain the density results for T_(2)(±l) and T_(2)(±2l)when the orders are small. Finally, based on our density results and numerical data, we propose distribution conjectures about T_(p)(F) when F varies over real or imaginary quadratic fields for any prime p, and about T_(2)(±l)and T_(2)(±2l) when l varies, in the spirit of Cohen-Lenstra heuristics. Our conjecture in the T_(2)(l) case is closely connected to Shanks-Sime-Washington’s speculation on the distributions of the zeros of 2-adic L-functions and to the distributions of the fundamental units.

Mild traumatic brain injury(mTBI)-induced post-traumatic headache(PTH)is a pressing public health concern and leading cause of disability worldwide.Although PTH is often accompanied by neurological disorders,the exact underlying mechanism remains largely unknown.Identifying potential biomarkers may prompt the diagnosis and development of effective treatments for mTBI-induced PTH.In this study,a mouse model of mTBI-induced PTH was established to investigate its effects on cerebral structure and function during short-term recovery.Results indicated that mice with mTBI-induced PTH exhibited balance deficits during the early post-injury stage.Metabolic kinetics revealed that variations in neurotransmitters were most prominent in the cerebellum,temporal lobe/cortex,and hippocampal regions during the early stages of PTH.Additionally,variations in brain functional activities and connectivity were further detected in the early stage of PTH,particularly in the cerebellum and temporal cortex,suggesting that these regions play central roles in the mechanism underlying PTH.Moreover,our results suggested that GABA and glutamate may serve as potential diagnostic or prognostic biomarkers for PTH.Future studies should explore the specific neural circuits involved in the regulation of PTH by the cerebellum and temporal cortex,with these two regions potentially utilized as targets for non-invasive stimulation in future clinical treatment.

Enhanced hydrogen evolution performance by 3D ordered macroporous Ru-CoP@NC electrocatalysts

Electrocatalytic water splitting coupled with sustainable energies is identified as an environmentally friendly and renewable strategy to generate high-quality hydrogen for the fuel cells.However,the main challenge is to develop high performance,low cost and chemically stable electrocatalysts to decline the energy barriers and enhance the sluggish kinetics of hydrogen evolution reaction(HER).Herein,a three-dimensional hierarchically ordered macroporous Ru-CoP@NC electrocatalyst(3DOM Ru-CoP@NC)derived from ordered macro-microporous metal-organic frameworks has been prepared using the precursor@template and double-solvent methods.The prepared 3DOM Ru-CoP@NC catalyst exhibits an overpotential of 15 mV(j=10 mA·cm^(-2))and a reaction Tafel slope of 38 mV·dec^(-1)in alkaline electrolyte,which are superior to commercial Pt@C catalyst.Additionally,the overpotential and reaction Tafel slope of this catalyst in acidic media are 45 mV and 50 mV·dec^(-1),respectively.The outstanding HER activities of 3DOM Ru-CoP@NC catalysts are ascribed to the 3D highly interconnectedreticular nanospaces that can increase effective reaction active sites.The N dope d carbon framework improves the electronic properties and conductivity.Moreover,the strong interaction of Ru and CoP nanoparticles also boosts the HER process.These results indicate that 3DOM Ru-CoP@NC catalysts with high catalytic activities have a broad application prospect in the future.

Different concentrations of hyaluronic acid eye drops for dry eye syndrome: a systematic review and Meta-analysis

AIM:To compare high or low concentration of hyaluronic acid eye drops(HY)for dry eye syndromes(DES).METHODS:Randomized controlled trials(RCTs)comparing various concentrations of HY were searched in PubMed,Embase,Web of Science,Cochrane,SinoMed,CNKI,Wanfang Database,CQVIP,and Chinese journals databases between inception and July 2023.Pooled standardized mean differences(SMD)or weighted mean difference(WMD)with 95%confidence intervals(CI)from RCTs evaluating Schirmer’s I test(SIT),corneal fluorescein staining score(CFS),tear breakup time(TBUT),DES score(DESS),and Ocular Surface Disease Index(OSDI)were calculated.Sensitivity analysis,Egger’s test and Meta-regression analysis were performed for all indicators.RESULTS:We conducted a Meta-analysis of 10 RCTs that met the inclusion criteria,involving 1796 cases.High-concentrations group significantly improved the outcome of CFS according to random effects modelling(SMD,-3.37;95%CI,-5.25 to-1.48;P=0.0005).The rest of the results were not statistically significant,including indicators such as SIT,TBUT,DESS and OSDI.CONCLUSION:For dry eyes with positive corneal staining,a high concentration of HY is recommended,whereas in other cases,a high concentration of HY does not offer a more pronounced advantage over a low concentration of HY in the treatment of dry eyes.

Practical implementation of minimally invasive biomedical applications has been a long-sought goal for microrobots.In this field,most previous studies only demonstrate microrobots with locomotion ability or performing a single task,unable to be functionalized effectively.Here,we propose a biocompatible shape memory alloy helical microrobot with regulative structure transformation,making it possible to adjust its motion behavior and mechanical properties precisely.Especially,towards vascular occlusion problem,these microrobots reveal a fundamental solution strategy in the mechanical capability using shape memory effect.Such shape-transformable microrobots can not only manipulate thrust and torque by structure to enhance the unclogging efficiency as a microdriler but also utilize the high work energy to apply the expandable helical tail as a selfpropulsive stent.The strategy takes advantage of untethered manipulation to operate microsurgery without unnecessary damage.This study opens a route to functionalize microrobots via accurate tuning in structures,motions,and mechanical properties.

Ultrathin surface coating of Cu enabling long-life Zn metal anodes

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries （AZIBs） are regarded as promising energy storage devices due to their low cost,high capacity,and ecological safety.Nevertheless,the severe dendritic growth and side reactions hinder their practical applicability significantly.Herein,an ultrathin Cu coating layer （～200 nm） is decorated on zinc foils via filtered cathodic vacuum arc deposition technology,aiming to achieve high-performance AZIBs.The Cu layer effectively suppresses chemical corrosion and hydrogen evolution reactions and enables preferential （002） Zn deposition during the stripping/plating cycles.Consequently,the Cu@Zn anode represents an elongated cycle life over 4,000 h at 2 mA·cm-2/2 mAh·cm-2.Even in conditions of high current density of 5 and 10 mA·cm-2,the Cu@Zn anode shows prolonged cycling stability exceeding 4000 and 2000 h,respectively.Such advantages also bring high Coulombic efficiency of 99.87% under 5 mAh·cm-2in Cu@Ti||Zn half-cell over 1500 cycles.Moreover,the Cu@Zn||MnO2full cell demonstrates a superior cyclability with a specific capacity of 203 mAh·g-1after 500 cycles a1 A·g-1.

As an outstanding representative of layered materials,molybdenum disulfide(MoS_(2))has excellent physical properties,such as high carrier mobility,stability,and abundance on earth.Moreover,its reasonable band gap and microelectronic compatible fabrication characteristics makes it the most promising candidate in future advanced integrated circuits such as logical electronics,flexible electronics,and focal-plane photodetector.However,to realize the all-aspects application of MoS_(2),the research on obtaining high-quality and large-area films need to be continuously explored to promote its industrialization.Although the MoS_(2)grain size has already improved from several micrometers to sub-millimeters,the high-quality growth of wafer-scale MoS_(2)is still of great challenge.Herein,this review mainly focuses on the evolution of MoS_(2)by including chemical vapor deposition,metal–organic chemical vapor deposition,physical vapor deposition,and thermal conversion technology methods.The state-of-the-art research on the growth and optimization mechanism,including nucleation,orientation,grain,and defect engineering,is systematically summarized.Then,this review summarizes the wafer-scale application of MoS_(2)in a transistor,inverter,electronics,and photodetectors.Finally,the current challenges and future perspectives are outlined for the wafer-scale growth and application of MoS_(2).

Modified approach of regenerative treatment for distal intrabony defect beneath non-keratinized mucosa at terminal molar:A case report

BACKGROUND Intrabony defects beneath non-keratinized mucosa are frequently observed at the distal site of terminal molars.Consequently,the application of regenerative treatment using the modified wedge-flap technique is considered impractical for these specific dental conditions.CASE SUMMARY This article proposes a modified surgical procedure aimed at exposing the distal intrabony defect by making a vertical incision in the keratinized buccal gingiva.The primary objective is to maintain gingival flap stability,thereby facilitating periodontal regeneration.The described technique was successfully employed in a case involving the left mandibular second molar,which presented with an intrabony defect without keratinized gingiva at the distal site.In this case,an incision was made on the disto-buccal gingival tissue,creating a tunnel-like separation of the distal non-keratinized soft tissue to expose the intrabony defect.Subsequently,bone grafting and guided tissue regeneration surgeries were performed,resulting in satisfactory bone fill at 9 mo postoperatively.CONCLUSION This technique offers a regenerative opportunity for the intrabony defects beneath non-keratinized mucosa and is recommended for further research.
