Effects of amodiaquine, artesunate and artesunate amodiaquine combination on open field novelty-induced behaviors and spatial memory in healthy mice were studied. Forty mice were used in the open field and fifty each in the radial arm maze and Y maze;mice were assigned into four or five groups of ten each, Group A served as control (distilled water), Groups B, C and D received artesunate (4 mg/kg), amodiaquine (10 mg/kg) and artesunate-amodiaquine combination (4 mg/kg and10 mg/kg) respectively, while Group E animals (for the cognition tests) were given scopolamine (2 mg/kg). Drugs and vehicle were administered orally for three days. Results were analysed by one way analysis of variance followed by a posthoc test. Results showed that artesunate and amodiaquine either in combination or administered singly caused a significant increase in open field novelty-induced horizontal locomotion and rearing. Grooming in the open field showed increments in the artesunate alone and artesunate amodiaquine groups while significant reductions in spatial memory were also seen in the cognition models used.

Intercropping involves the cultivation of more than one crop on a plot of land at a particular *** intercropping with other crops can increase the profitability of farmers and the development of tea *** study estimated the profitability level of intercropped tea farms and determined the factors affecting the profitability of tea intercropping systems in the study *** was obtained from two hundred and four tea farmers using a well-structured *** analytical techniques used in the study were descriptive analysis and linear *** results revealed that the majority(95.6%)of the farmers are from Kakara and Nyiwa *** are few(2.9%)women involved in tea farming in Taraba State.29%of the tea farmers are young less than 30 years and old above 60 *** percent of the farmers are single,83.8%are married and 1.5%are *** 40%of the tea farmers had no formal education,21%have between 1-6 years of education,19%had 7-12 years of education and 21%had greater than 12 years of *** gross margin is N289,900,581.9 and the gross margin per farmer is N1,421,*** net income is N2,879,055,533.3 and the net income per farmer is N1,411,*** amount of profit tea farmers make in Taraba State is N1,425,001 and the profit per farmer is N6,*** costs(weeding,pruning,application of insecticide,watering)and cost of materials(cutlass,file,chemical,bag and others)are significant determinants of the profit level of the tea intercropping system in Taraba *** intercropping farming is profitable in Taraba State Nigeria.

Nutritional, Microbiological and Sensory Characteristics of Malted Soy-Kunu Zaki: An Improved Traditional Beverage

The nutritional, microbiological and sensory characteristics of improved kunu-zaki produced from malted cereals enriched with malted soymilk at different substitution levels (0% - 30%) were investigated. Enrichment with soymilk and malting increased the protein, amino acid, ash and moisture content of the improved kunu-zaki. Malting resulted in a decrease in carbohydrate and fat content. The protein content of the malted samples ranged between 2.79% and 3.82% while that of unmalted was 2.36%. There was decrease in the concentration of phytic acid and trypsin inhibitor after malting but the concentration increased as soymilk was added. Microbiological analyses showed that microbial load of samples increased with the addition of soymilk. There was a significant difference (p 0.05) in the sensory attributes, acceptability decrease with increase in soymilk addition because of the beany flavor.

Personality Traits, Medication Beliefs &Adherence to Medication among Diabetic Patients Attending the Diabetic Clinic in a Teaching Hospital in Southwest Nigeria

Background: Non-adherence to drug therapy is an important cause of treatment failure among patients with chronic conditions like diabetes. Previous researches have presented associations among personality traits, medication beliefs and adherence to long-term medication treatment in individuals with different chronic diseases. However, there is limited knowledge about associations among personality traits, medication belief and adherence to diabetic treatment in Africa. It was on this basis that this study was undertaken to assess the personality traits and personal beliefs of patients on medication for Diabetes Mellitus (DM) and to also assess adherence to treatment. Methodology: This study was a descriptive cross sectional study. Using a systematic random sampling technique, 223 patients attending the diabetic clinic of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Lagos were selected over a period of 12 weeks. Patients were interviewed using the Big Five-factor Personality Inventory, Medication Belief Questionnaire and the Medication Adherence Report Scale. Data were statistically analyzed using descriptive statistics, Student’s t-tests, Chi Square Tests and Pearson’s correlations analysis. Results: Non-adherence was estimated to be 40.8%. Non-adherent respondents had lower mean score of neuroticism personality traits compared to adherent respondents. Pearson’s correlation analysis showed a weak negative relationship between neuroticism personality trait and adherence behaviour (P o a statistically significant weak correlation (r = 0.1) between specific concern medication belief and adherence to medication among respondents in the study (P onclusion: Personality traits of diabetic patients can influence their adherence to treatment.
