Host-microbial interactions and regulation of intestinal epithelial barrier function: From physiology to pathology

The gastrointestinal tract is the largest reservoir of commensal bacteria in the human body, providing nutrients and space for the survival of microbes while concurrently operating mucosal barriers to confine the microbial population. The epithelial cells linked by tight junctions not only physically separate the microbiota from the lamina propria, but also secrete proinflammatory cytokines and reactive oxygen species in response to pathogen invasion and metabolic stress and serve as a sentinel to the underlying immune cells. Accumulating evidence indicates that commensal bacteria are involved in various physiological functions in the gut and microbial imbalances (dysbiosis) may cause pathology. Commensal bacteria are involved in the regulation of intestinal epithelial cell turnover, promotion of epithelial restitution and reorganization of tight junctions, all of which are pivotal for fortifying barrier function. Recent studies indicate that aberrant bacterial lipopolysaccharide-mediated signaling in gut mucosa may be involved in the pathogenesis of chronic inflammation and carcinogenesis. Our perception of enteric commensals has now changed from one of opportunistic pathogens to active participants in maintaining intestinal homeostasis. This review attempts to explain the dynamic interaction between the intestinal epithelium and commensal bacteria in disease and health status.

BACKGROUND There remains a dearth of Asian epidemiological literature for paediatric inflammatory bowel disease(PIBD).AIM To describe the presenting features of PIBD from 7 Asia-Pacific pediatric gastroenterology centers via a central standardised electronic data *** Clinical,endoscopic and radiologic data at diagnosis from the registry were extracted between 1^(st) January 1995 to 31^(st) December *** phenotypic characteristics were classified as per the Paris classification *** There was a distinct rise in new PIBD cases:Nearly half(48.6%)of the cohort was diagnosed in the most recent 5 years(2015-2019).The ratio of Crohn’s disease(CD):Ulcerative colitis(UC):IBDUnclassified was 55.9%:38.3%:5.8%.The mean age was 9.07 years with a high proportion of very early onset IBD(VEO-IBD)(29.3%)and EO-IBD(52.7%).An over-representation of the Indian/South Asian ethnic group was observed which accounted for 37.0% of the overall Singapore/Malaysia subcohort(6.8%-9.0%Indians in census).Indian/South Asian CD patients were also most likely to present with symptomatic perianal disease(P=0.003).CD patients presented with significantly more constitutional symptoms(fever,anorexia,malaise/fatigue and muscle-wasting)than UC and higher inflammatory indices(higher C-reactive protein and lower albumin levels).CONCLUSION We observed a high incidence of VEO-IBD and an over-representation of the Indian *** Asian CD patients were more likely to have symptomatic perianal disease.

Fabrication of ni-Zn spinel ferrite with superior magnetic performance from electric arc furnace dust and iron scale

The ni-ZnFe_(2)O_(4)(nixZn_(1-x)Fe_(2)O_(4),x=0.4-0.7)spinel was synthesized using Zn2+extracted from electric arc furnace dust(EAFD),nickel chloride hexahydrate,and Fe^(3+)extracted from iron scale as raw *** zinc was selectively extracted from EAFD using CaO roasting followed by NH_(4)Cl solution *** ferric ion was leached from iron scale using HCl solution as acid *** experimental results demonstrate a high level of efficiency in the extraction of zinc,with a rate of 97.5%,and the leaching rate of ferric ion is 96.89%.The composition of the leaching solution is primary zinc and iron with low calcium,which is beneficial to the preparation of spinel *** influence of ni content(x)and calcination temperature on the synthesis and magnetic properties of nixZn_(1-x)Fe_(2)O_(4)compounds was investigated by X-ray diffraction,scanning electron microscopy,and vibrating sample *** results revealed that both ni content and calcination temperature significantly affect the synthesis and magnetic properties of spinel nixZn_(1-x)Fe_(2)O_(4).Under the conditions of ni content set at x=0.6,calcination temperature of 1100℃,and a duration of 2 h,a spinel nixZn_(1-x)Fe_(2)O_(4)with high saturation magnetization(Ms=65.7 A m2 kg-1)and low coercivity(Hc=0.056 A m^(-1))was obtained.

MOF-derived ni3Fe/ni/niFe2O4@C for enhanced hydrogen storage performance of MgH2

Magnesium hydride（MgH2） is an important material for hydrogen（H2） storage and transportation owing to its high capacity and ***,its intrinsic properties have considerably limited its industrial *** this study,the niFe-800 catalyst as metal-organic framework（MOF） derivative was first utilized to promote the intrinsic properties of *** to pure MgH2,which releases1.24 wt% H2in 60 min at 275℃,the MgH2-10 niFe-800 composite releases 5.85 wt% H2in the same *** at a lower temperature of 250℃,the MgH2-10 niFe-800 composite releases 3.57 wt% H2,surpassing the performance of pure MgH2at 275℃.Correspondingly,while pure MgH2absorbs 2.08 wt% H2in60 min at 125℃,the MgH2-10 niFe-800 composite absorbs 5.35 wt% H2in just 1 min,Remarkably,the MgH2-10 niFe-800 composite absorbs 2.27 wt% H2in 60 min at 50℃ and 4.64 wt% H2at 75℃.This indicates that MgH2-10 niFe-800 exhibits optimum performance with excellent kinetics at low ***,the capacity of the MgH2-10 niFe-800 composite remains largely stable after ***,the Mg2ni/Mg2niH4acts as a "hydrogen pump",providing effective diffusion channels that enhance the kinetic process of the composite during ***,Fe0facilitates electron transfer and creates hydrogen diffusion channels and catalytic ***,carbon（C） effectively prevents particle agglomeration and maintains the cyclic stability of the ***,the synergistic effects of Mg2ni/Mg2niH4,Fe0,and C considerably improve the kinetic properties and cycling stability of *** work offers an effective and valuable approach to improving the hydrogen storage efficiency in the commercial application of MgH2.

Nucleophilic trifluoromethylation with CF_(3)H/LiHMDS: probing the nucleophilic reactivity of LiCF_(3) species

The nucleophilic trifluoromethylation involving trifluoromethyllithium(LiCF_(3))species has been an open question since Haszeldine attempted to prepare LiCF_(3) in ***,LiCF_(3) has been used for electrophilic difluoromethylene transfer processes(via elimination of fluoride ions)since ***,we demonstrated that by using a polar solvent such as dimethylformamide(DMF)or hexamethylphosphoramide(HMPA)as the lithium chelator,the in situ deprotonation of fluoroform(HCF_(3))with lithium hexamethyldisilazide(LiHMDS)could generate a tamed LiCF_(3) species that is sufficiently persistent to undergo nucleophilic trifluoromethylation *** nucleophilic reactivity of LiCF_(3) species was probed with several electrophiles,including arylsulfonyl fluorides,diaryl ketones,and silyl *** synthetic utility of this method is demonstrated with the efficient synthesis of highly valuable triflones that are otherwise difficult to synthesize from HCF_(3) using potassium or sodium *** work not only showcases a new protocol for the utilization of fluoroform(an industrial waste with high global warming potential)as the trifluoromethylation reagent,but also provides intriguing insights into the harnessing of nucleophilic reactivity of the transient LiCF_(3) species.

Grid-Connected/Islanded Switching Control Strategy for Photovoltaic Storage Hybrid Inverters Based on Modified Chimpanzee Optimization Algorithm

Uneven power distribution,transient voltage,and frequency deviations are observed in the photovoltaic storage hybrid inverter during the switching between grid-connected and island *** response to these issues,this paper proposes a grid-connected/island switching control strategy for photovoltaic storage hybrid inverters based on the modified chimpanzee optimization *** proposed strategy incorporates coupling compensation and power differentiation elements based on the traditional droop ***,it combines the angular frequency and voltage amplitude adjustments provided by the phase-locked loop-free pre-synchronization control *** pre-synchronization is achieved by regulating the virtual current to zero and aligning the photovoltaic storage hybrid inverter with the grid ***,two novel operators,learning and emotional behaviors are introduced to enhance the optimization precision of the chimpanzee *** operators ensure high-precision and high-reliability optimization of the droop control parameters for photovoltaic storage hybrid inverters.A Simulink model was constructed for simulation analysis,which validated the optimized control strategy’s ability to evenly distribute power under load *** strategy effectively mitigated transient voltage and current surges during mode ***,seamless and efficient switching between gridconnected and island modes was achieved for the photovoltaic storage hybrid *** enhanced energy utilization efficiency,in turn,offers robust technical support for grid stability.

Holocene ecological evolution of Tengchong Qinghai Lake responses to climate changes and human activities in Yunnan,southwestern China

Holocene climate change's impact on ecosystems has attracted considerable *** human activities increasingly influenced ecosystems during the Holocene,many paleo-records primarily reconstruct natural environmental changes,often neglecting the pre-instrumental human influenceon ecological *** understand ecosystem responses comprehensively,it is essential to consider anthropogenic impacts alongside natural ***,we present a Holocene chironomid record from Qinghai Crater Lake in Tengchong,southwestern China,examining the timing and magnitude of natural and anthropogenic impacts on the lake ecosystem throughout the *** results reveal that early to midHolocene chironomid communities,especially in terms of species richness,were mainly driven by rising summer temperatures associated with increased solar *** the late-Holocene,the weakening Indian Summer Monsoon led to fluctuating lake levels and intensified human impacts,impacting both chironomid species richness and community *** 0.8 ka BP,enhanced human disturbances shifted the chironomid community composition from mesotrophic taxa dominance(e.g.,Cladotanytasus,Macropelopia)to eutrophic taxa dominance(e.g.,Chironomus,Polypedilum).Over the past few centuries,human influence has further increased chironomid species richness but has led to declining community stability.
