Embryonic liver fordin is involved in glucose glycolysis of hepatic stellate cell by regulating PI3K/Akt signaling

AIM To investigate the role of embryonic liver fordin(ELF) in liver fibrosis by regulating hepatic stellate cells(HSCs) glucose *** The expression of ELF and the glucose glycolysisrelated proteins were evaluated in activated HSCs. si RNA was used to silence ELF expression in activated HSCs in vitro and the subsequent changes in PI3K/Akt signaling and glucose glycolysis-related proteins were *** The expression of ELF increased remarkably in HSCs of the fibrosis mouse model and HSCs that were cultured for 3 wk in vitro. Glucose glycolysis-related proteins showed an obvious increase in the activated HSCs, such as phosphofructokinase, platelet and glucose transporter 1. ELF-si RNA, which perfectly silenced the expression of ELF in activated HSCs, led to the induction of glucose glycolysis-related proteins and extracellular matrix(ECM) components. Moreover, p Akt, which is an important downstream factor in PI3K/Akt signaling, showed a significant change in response to the ELF silencing. The expression of glucose glycolysisrelated proteins and ECM components decreased remarkably when the PI3K/Akt signaling was blocked by Ly294002 in the activated HSCs. CONCLUSION ELF is involved in HSC glucose glycolysis by regulating PI3K/Akt signaling.

Numerical investigation of influence of wave directionality on the water resonance at a narrow gap between two rectangular barges

A three-dimensional time-domain potential flow model with second-order nonlinearity was applied to simulate the wave resonance in a gap between two side-by-side rectangular barges. In the model, the velocity potential was decomposed into the incident potential and unknown scattered potential which was obtained by solving the boundary integral equation. The fourth-order predict-correct method was applied to enforce the free surface conditions in the time integration. The influence of the wave direction on the first and second-order gap surface elevations was investigated. The results reveal that the incident wave angle does not affect the resonant wave frequency and the maximum surface elevation at resonance always occurs at the middle location along the gap. However, the corresponding maximum wave surface elevation at resonance varies with the incident wave angle. The location of the maximum wave elevation shifts either upstream or downstream along the gap, depending on the relative magnitude of incident wave frequency to the resonant frequency.

Designing and stereoselectively constructing chiral mechanically interlocked molecules(MIMs)is a goal that many chemists are pursuing due to their potential in the development of functional molecular machines involved in catalysis,sensing,and chiroptical ***,the synthesis of enantiopure supramolecular entities with crystallographic structures remains ***,the stereoselective self-assembly of chiral metalla[2]catenanes interlocked by two D-shaped macrocycles was realized by combining long binuclear half-sandwich organometallic Cp*Rh^(III)(Cp*=η^(5)-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)clip and ditopic monodentate ligand incorporating L-leucine *** resulting metalla[2]catenane displayed unique co-conformational mechanical helical chirality characteristics arising from the chirality transfer of the chiral ***,decreasing the length of the binuclear Cp*Rh^(III)clip and adjusting the steric hindrance of the amino-acid side chains(L-alanine and L-phenylalanine)in the ligands resulted in two lemniscular macrocycles with left-handed(M)-twisted conformational *** the best of our knowledge,the synthesized macrocycles are the first family of homochiral abnormal lemniscate-shaped organometallic macrocycles featuring figure-eight ***[2]catenanes and macrocycles with opposite chirality were also generated by employing corresponding D-amino acid ligands,as evidenced by single-crystal X-ray diffraction,nuclear magnetic resonance,mass,and circular dichroism *** present study demonstrates that homochiral MIMs can be accessed readily using amino acid–containing ligands through rational molecular design.

Relationships between plant colonization and soil characteristics in the natural recovery of an earthquaketriggered debris flow gully in the Wanglang National Nature Reserve,China

Fragmentation and loss of habitats due to natural disasters, like earthquakes and earthquaketriggered debris flows are existing threats to the long- term survival of the giant panda （Ailuropoda melanoleuca）. To better understand natural recovery processes of the damaged habitat, field investigation and laboratory analysis were used to analyze relationships between plant colonization and soil characteristics in an over 3o-year natural recovery of a damaged giant panda habitat in a debris flow gully after the 1976 Songpan-Pingwu earthquake in Sichuan Province, China. Four different damaged sites were selected that located at the center of the gully （center）, on a flat alluvial fan （fan）, in a side slope of the gully （slope）, and at the ecotone between the gully and native forest （ecotone）. Vegetation characteristics, soil physicochemical properties, and microbial biomass in the different sites and soil depths were measured. After the natural recovery, the soil fertility, water retention, and microbial biomass were highest at ecotone, followed by fan, slope, and center. Only a few perennial herbs colonized at center; shrubs started to invade at fan and slope, and the native trees dominated the community of ecotone. Furthermore, Fargesia spathacea （food for the giant panda） started to be re-established at ecotone, and the community characteristic of ecotone recovered similarly to the native habitat. These results suggested that improving the soil fertility, water retaining capacity and microbial biomass is fundamental to the plant colonization, particular for F. spathacea＇s re- establishment in a damaged giant panda habitat.

Fabrication and characterization of anodic oxide nanotubes on TiNb alloys

Titanium and its alloys have been extensively used as implant materials owing to their high specific strength, good biocompatibility and excellent corrosion resistance. Oxide nanotubular array layer can be formed on Ti alloy surface by electrochemical anodization treatment. In this work, the morphology of nanotubes formed on Ti-Nb alloys（Nb content of 5 wt%, 10 wt%, 20 wt%, 30 wt% and40 wt%） was investigated using an electrolyte containing ethylene glycol and NH_4 F. Oxide layers consisting of highly ordered nanotubes with a range of diameters（approximately40-55 nm for the inner diameter and 100-120 nm for the outer diameter） and lengths（approximately 10-20 lm） can be formed on alloys in the Ti-x Nb system, independent on the Nb content. The nanotubes formed on the Ti-Nb alloy surface were transformed from the anatase to rutile structure of titanium oxide. The oxide nanotubular surface is highly hydrophilic compared with the intact Ti Nb foil. The surface wettability varies with the nanotube diameter. As the nanotube diameter increases while the nanotube layer thickness remains constant, the capillary wetting of the nanotube surface decreases and the surface becomes less *** changes the nanotubular surface wettability further and establishes less hydrophilic surface conditions due to the removal of hydroxyl groups and residue fluoridecontaining species. It is believed that the surface wettability is changed due to the decreasing content of hydroxyl groups in ambient atmosphere. This work can provide guidelines for improving structural and environmental conditions responsible for changing surface wettability of Ti Nb surfaces for biomedical applications.

Research on the microstructure evolution of Ni-based superalloy cylindrical parts during hot power spinning

To predict the microstructure evolution and reveal the forming mechanism of Ni-based superalloy cylindrical parts during hot power spinning, a finite element method (FEM) model of deformation-heat transfermicrostructure evolution was established using *** software. A numerical simulation was then conducted based on the secondary development of user subroutines, to investigate evolution of the microstructure of a Haynes 230 alloy cylindrical part during hot power spinning. The volume fraction of dynamic recrystallization (DRX) and the grain size of Haynes 230 alloy cylindrical parts during hot power spinning were analyzed. The results showed that the DRX of the spun workpiece was more obvious with an increase in the forming temperature, T, and the total thinning ratio of wall thickness,ψ***, the complete DRX microstructure with fine and uniform grains was obtained when T≥1 100 °C and ψt≥ 2 56%, but the grain size of the spun workpiece decreased slightly with an increase in the roller feed rate, f. The experimental results conformed well with simulation results.

Distributions of Visual Receptive Fields from Retinotopic to Craniotopic Coordinates in the Lateral Intraparietal Area and Frontal Eye Fields of the Macaque

Even though retinal images of objects change their locations following each eye movement,we perceive a stable and continuous *** possible mechanism by which the brain achieves such visual stability is to construct a craniotopic coordinate by integrating retinal and extraretinal *** have been several proposals on how this may be done,including eye-position modulation(gain fields)of retinotopic receptive fields(RFs)and craniotopic *** the present study,we investigated coordinate systems used by RFs in the lateral intraparietal(LIP)cortex and frontal eye fields(FEF)and compared the two *** mapped the two-dimensional RFs of neurons in detail under two eye fixations and analyzed how the RF of a given neuron changes with eye position to determine its coordinate *** same recording and analysis procedures were applied to the two brain *** found that,in both areas,RFs were distributed from retinotopic to craniotopic *** was no significant difference between the distributions in the LIP and *** a small fraction of neurons was fully craniotopic,whereas most neurons were between the retinotopic and craniotopic *** distributions were strongly biased toward the retinotopic side but with significant craniotopic *** results suggest that there is only weak evidence for craniotopic RFs in the LIP and FEF,and that transformation from retinotopic to craniotopic coordinates in these areas must rely on other factors such as gain fields.

Intergranular corrosion behavior and mechanism of the stabilized ultra-pure 430LX ferritic stainless steel

Intergranular corrosion(IGC) behavior of the stabilized ultra-pure 430 LX ferritic stainless steel(FSS) was investigated by using double loop electrochemical potentiokinetic reactivation(DL-EPR) and oxalic acid etch tests to measure the susceptibility of specimens given a two-step heat treatment. The results reveal that IGC occurs in the specimens aged at the temperature range of 600–750℃ for a short time. The aging time that is required to cause IGC decreases with the increase of aging temperature. A longer aging treatment can reduce the susceptibility to IGC. The microstructural observation shows that M(23)C6 precipitates form along the grain boundaries, leading to the formation of Cr-depleted zones. The presence of Cr-depleted zones results in the susceptibility to IGC. However, the atoms of stabilizing elements replace chromium atoms to form MC precipitates after long-time aging treatment, resulting in the chromium replenishment of Cr-depleted zones and the reduction of the susceptibility to IGC.
