Dear Editor,Nasopharyngeal carcinoma(NPC)is a common malignancy in East and Southeast Asia,especially in South *** etiology of NPC has been linked to genetic susceptibility,Epstein-Barr virus(EBV)infection,and environmental *** evidence including multiple genome-wide association studies(GWASs)has revealed robust genetic predisposition of ***,GWAS-identified genetic variants collectively account for only 8.2%of NPC heritability[1].The underlying inherited predisposition is largely *** strongest genetic signal for NPC consistently hits the human leukocyte antigen(HLA)region on 6p21[2].However,the highly polymorphic nature and complicated long-range linkage disequilibrium(LD)in the HLA region particularly obscure the causal variants driving the *** addition,most genetic variants located in introns or intergenic *** causal genes mediating genetic effects on NPC risk have rarely been ascertained by GWAS alone.

Human osteogenic progenitors are not precisely defined,being primarily studied as heterogeneous multipotent cell populations and termed mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs).Notably,select human pericytes can develop into bone-forming ***,we sought to define the differentiation potential of CD146 f human pericytes from skeletal and soft tissue sources,with the underlying goal of defining cell surface markers that typify an osteoblastogenic ***146+CD31~CD45_pericytes were derived by fluorescence-activated cell sorting from human periosteum,adipose,or dermal *** CD146+CD31—CD45 cells retained canonical features of pericytes/*** pericytes demonstrated a striking tendency to undergo osteoblastogenesis in vitro and skeletogenesis in vivo,while soft tissue pericytes did not *** analysis revealed higher CXCR4 signaling among periosteal pericytes in comparison to their soft tissue counterparts,and CXCR4 chemical inhibition abrogated ectopic ossification by periosteal ***,enrichment of CXCR4+pericytes or stromal cells identified an osteoblastic/non-adipocytic precursor *** sum,human skeletal and soft tissue pericytes differ in their basal abilities to form *** exists in soft tissue pericytes,however,and CXCR4+pericytes represent an osteoblastogenic,non-adipocytic cell ***,enrichment for CXCR4-expressing stromal cells is a potential new tactic for skeletal tissue engineering.

A meteor radar chain located along the 120°E meridian in the Northern Hemisphere from low to middle latitudes provides longterm horizontal wind observations of the mesosphere and lower thermosphere(MLT)*** this study,we report a seasonal variation and its latitudinal feature in the horizontal mean wind in the MLT region observed by six meteor radar instruments located at Mohe(53.5°N,122.3°E),Beijing(40.3°N,116.2°E),Mengcheng(33.4°N,116.5°E),Wuhan(30.6°N,114.4°E),Kunming(25.6°N,108.3°E),and Fuke(19.5°N,109.1°E)*** addition,we compare the wind in the MLT region measured by the meteor radar stations with those simulated by the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model(WACCM).In general,the WACCM appears to capture well the seasonal and latitudinal variations in the zonal wind *** particular,the temporal evolution of the eastward zonal wind maximum shifts from July to May as the latitude ***,the simulated WACCM meridional wind exhibits differences from the meteor radar observations.

CRISPR/Cas9-mediated mutagenesis of VvMLO3 results in enhanced resistance to powdery mildew in grapevine(Vitis vinifera)

Grapevine(Vitis vinifera),one of the most economically important fruit crops in the world,suffers significant yield losses from powdery mildew,a major fungal disease caused by Erysiphe *** addition to suppressing host immunity,phytopathogens modulate host proteins termed susceptibility(S)factors to promote their proliferation in *** this study,CRISPR/Cas9(clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats/CRISPR-associated 9)technology was used to enable the targeted mutagenesis of MLO(mildew resistance Locus O)family genes that are thought to serve as S factors for powdery mildew *** deletions or insertions were induced in one or both alleles of two grapevine MLO genes,VvMLO3 and VvMLO4,in the transgenic plantlets of the powdery mildew-susceptible cultivar Thompson *** editing efficiency achieved with different CRISPR/Cas9 constructs varied from 0 to 38.5%.Among the 20 VvMLO3/4-edited lines obtained,one was homozygous for a single mutation,three harbored biallelic mutations,seven were heterozygous for the mutations,and nine were chimeric,as indicated by the presence of more than two mutated alleles in each *** of the 20 VvMLO3/4-edited grapevine lines showed normal growth,while the remaining lines exhibited senescence-like chlorosis and ***,four VvMLO3-edited lines showed enhanced resistance to powdery mildew,which was associated with host cell death,cell wall apposition(CWA)and H2O2 *** together,our results demonstrate that CRISPR/Cas9 genome-editing technology can be successfully used to induce targeted mutations in genes of interest to improve traits of economic importance,such as disease resistance in grapevines.

Influence of composition and size on the thermodynamic stability and structural evolution of CuAlNi nanoclusters

The heating process for CuAlNi nanoclusters with cuboctahedral structure was studied by molecular dynamics simulation with the embedded atom method. A diffusionless martensitic transformation from the cuboctahedral(CO) to the icosahedral(ICO) structure before the melting point was found in some CuAlNi nanoclusters. The effects of element composition and cluster size on the thermodynamic stability and structural transformation of trimetallic nanoclusters were investigated. The results show that the CO–ICO transformation temperature was size-dependent and occurred only for small clusters. It was also observed that the CO–ICO transformation temperature firstly dropped and then raised as Al concentration increased, which may be strongly related to the release of excess energy. Furthermore, the surface segregation phenomenon was also observed that the lower surface energy components, such as Al and Cu atoms, segregated to the surface of CuAlNi nanoclusters. The changes in the melting points of Cu Al Ni nanoclusters with different alloy compositions and cluster sizes were also studied. And furthermore, the physical basis of structural transition of CuAlNi nanoclusters was discussed.

Operation Performance of Central Solar Heating System with Seasonal Storage Water Tank in Harbin

This paper presented a preliminary research on the central solar heating system with seasonal storage(CSHSSS)used in cold climate in China.A mathematical model of the solar energy seasonal storage water tank used in the central solar heating system was firstly developed based on energy *** was followed by the simulation of the CSHSSS used in a two-floor villa in Harbin,and analysis of the impacts on storage water temperature of tank volume,solar collector area,tank burial depth,insulation thickness around the tank,*** results show there is a relatively economical tank volume to optimize the system efficiency,which decreases with increasing tank volume at the constant collector area,and increases with increasing collector area at the constant tank ***,the insulation thickness has obvious effect on avoiding heat loss,while the tank burial depth doesn'*** addition,the relationship between the solar collector efficiency and storage water temperature is also obtained,it decreases quickly with increasing storing water temperature,and then increases slowly after starting space heating *** may be helpful for relevant design and optimization in cold climates in China and all over the world.

This study aims to figure out satellite imaging mechanisms for submerged sand ridges in the shallow water region in the case of the flow parallel to the topography *** the disturbance governing equations of the shear-flow yields the analytical solutions of the secondary *** solutions indicate that a flow with a parabolic horizontal velocity shear and a sinusoidal vertical velocity shear will induce a pair of vortexes with opposite signs distributed symmetrically on the two sides of central line of a rectangular *** the case of the presence of surface Ekman layer with the direction of Ekman current opposite to(coincident with) the mean flow,the two vortexes converge(diverge) at the central line of canal in the upper layer and form a surface current convergent(divergent) zone along the central line of the *** the case of the absence of surface Ekman layer,there is no convergent(divergent) zone formed over the sea *** theoretical results are applied to interpretations of three convergent cases,one divergent case and statistics of 27 cases of satellite observations in the submerged sand ridge region of the Liaodong Shoal in the Bohai *** found that the long,finger-like,bright patterns on SAR images are corresponding to the locations of the canals(or tidal channels) formed by two adjacent sand ridges rather than the sand ridges themselves.
