The 3-dimensional interactions between toes of a gecko and substrates (ceilings or walls) were measured when it moves on ceilings or walls by using a 3-dimensional force measuring array,and the correspondent morphology of the gecko toes was recorded by a high speed *** study aims to understand the relationship between adhesive and shear forces generated by the toes of the gecko and the locomotion behavior when it walks on walls and *** showed that shear force is along the toe-only 12.6° and 3.1° away from the toe for wall-climbing and ceiling-crawling,respectively while the adhesion is big enough to balance the body weight and *** shear forces generated by the first and the fifth toes are in opposite directions;this redundant force increases the reliability of adhesion and stability of *** support angles of toes are equal approximately for ceiling-crawling and *** study greatly inspires the design of a gecko-like robot.

Steps of manipulation is required to complete the m od eling of the connection elements such as bolt, pin and the like in commerce CAD system. It leads to low efficiency, difficulty to assure the relative position, impossibility to express rules and knowledge. Based on the inner character analy sis of interpart, detail modification and assembly relation of mechanical connec ting element, the idea, which extends the feature modeling of part to the interp art feature modeling for assembly purpose, is presented, and virtual part based connecting element modeling is proposed. Virtual part is a complement set of lo cal modification of part to be connected. In assembly modeling, base part is mod ified by Boolean operation between base part and virtual part. The modeling and assembly is finished just in one operation, at the same time the rules and knowl edge of the connection elements are encapsulated through virtual part. According to this mechanism, a knowledge-based connecting elements rapid design module i s developed on commerce software package UG with satisfying results.

Nanostructured and conventional Al2O3-13wt.%TiO2 ceramic coatings were prepared by plasma spraying with nanostructured agglomerated and conventional powders, respectively. The microstructure and microhardness of the coatings were investigated using scanning electron microscopy （SEM）, energy dispersive spectroscopy （EDS）, and microhardness measurement. Meanwhile, the friction and wear behaviors were analyzed and compared using a ball-on-disk tribometer. The results show that the conventional coating has lamellar stacking characteristic and has some pores. However, the nanostructured coating shows a bimodal microstructure, which is composed of both fully melted regions and partially melted regions. According to the microstructural difference, the partially melted regions can be divided into liquid-phase sintered regions （a three-dimensional net or skeleton-like structure： Al2O3-rich submicron particles embedded in the TiO2-rich matrix） and solid-phase sintered regions （remained nanoparticles）. The microstructural characteristics of the liquid-phase sintered region are formed due to the selective melting of TiO2 nanoparticles during plasma spraying. On the other hand, the TiO2 and Al2O3 nanoparticles of the solid-phase sintered regions are all unmelted during plasma spraying. Due to the existence of nanostructured microstructures, the nanostructured coating has a higher microhardness, a lower friction coefficient, and a better wear resistance than the conventional coating.

Joining experiments of CBN grains to AISI 1045 steel were conducted using Ag-Cu-Ti composite fillers containing TiX （X=B2 or N） particles at 920 ℃ for 5 min. The influences of TiB2 and TiN particles on the interfacial microstructure features between CBN and filler were investigated comparatively. The experimental results show that TiN particles are more effective than TiB2 ones to control the interfacial reaction and particularly the resultants. Thermodynamic analysis reveals that the varied interfacial reaction induced by the addition of TiB2 and TiN particles is mainly atttributed to the activity change of the B and Ti elements in the brazing reaction system.

The 7th Chinese Lost Foam Casting (LFC) Symposium & the 1st LFC Technology Exposition were held on May 21-23 at nanjing university of aeronautics and astronautics (NUAA), and the conference theme was "Recent development of lost foam casting technology". Prof. TAO Jie, the Executive Chairman of the conference and the Vice Director of LFC Committee of Foundry Institution of Chinese mechanical engineering Society(FICMES), chaired the inauguration. Prof. NIE Hong, the Vice President of NUAA, represented the host address and expressed welcome and gratitude to all the guests from home and abroad. He said the development of the technologies, environmental protection and the trade globalization require to continually improve the performance of products, and accurately select proper material and the manufacturing technology. As the revolutionary technology in casting development history, LFC technology has brought a brand-new change for the machine design and casting production. He hoped the conference would be beneficial to the development of Chinese LFC technololy and wished the symposium a complete success! Prof. ye Sheng-ping, the Executive Chairman of the conference and the Director of LFC Committee of FICMES, gave the opening address and read out the congratulations of F. J.
