Influence of Shim Layers on Progressive Failure of a Composite Componentin Composite-Aluminum Bolted Joint in Aerospace Structural Assembly

The influence of varying shim layers on the progressive damage/failure of a composite component in a bolted composite-aluminum aerospace structural assembly was investigated using a non-linear three-dimensional(3 D)structural solid elements assembled model of a carbon fiber-reinforced polymer(CFRP)-aluminum single-lap joint with a titanium(Ti-6 Al-4 V)fastener and a washer generated with the commercial finite element(FE)software package,ABAQUS/Standard.A progressive failure algorithm written in Fortran code with a set of appropriate degradation rules was incorporated as a user subroutine in ABAQUS to simulate the non-linear damage behavior of the composite component in the composite-aluminum bolted aerospace *** assembled 3 DFE model simulated,as well as the specimen for the experimental testing consisted of a carbon-epoxy IMS-977-2 substrate,aluminum alloy 7075-T651 substrate,liquid shim(Hysol EA 9394),solid peelable fiberglass shim,a titanium fastener,and a *** distinction to previous investigations,the influence of shim layers(liquid shim and solid peelable fiberglass shim)inserted in-between the faying surfaces(CFRP and aluminum alloy substrates)were investigated by both numerical simulations and experimental *** simulated model and test specimens conformed to the standard test configurations for both civil and military *** numerical simulations correlated well with the experimental results and it has been found that:(1)The shimming procedure as agreed upon by the aerospace industry for the resolution of assembly gaps in bolted joints for composite materials is the same for a composite-aluminum structure;liquid shim series(0.3,0.5 and 0.7 mm thicknesses)prolonged the service life of the composite component whereas a solid peelable fiberglass shim most definitely had a better influence on the 0.9 assembly gap compared with the liquid shim;(2)The shim layers considerably influenced the structural strength of the composite component b

The transcription factor p53 plays pivotal roles in numerous biological processes, including the suppression of tumours. The rich availability of biophysical data aimed at understanding its structure–function relationships since the 1990s has enabled the application of a variety of computational modelling techniques towards the establishment of mechanistic models. Together they have provided deep insights into the structure, mechanics, energetics, and dynamics of p53. In parallel, the observation that mutations in p53 or changes in its associated pathways characterize several human cancers has resulted in a race to develop therapeutic modulators of p53, some of which have entered clinical trials. This review describes how computational modelling has played key roles in understanding structural-dynamic aspects of p53, formulating hypotheses about domains that are beyond current experimental investigations, and the development of therapeutic molecules that target the p53 pathway.

Rectangular single-mode polymer optical fiber for femtosecond laser inscription of FBGs

In this study,a novel rectangular polymer single-mode optical fiber for femtosecond(fs)laser-inscribed fiber Bragg gratings(FBGs)is proposed and *** cylindrical geometry of the widely used circular fiber elongates the fs laser beam along the fiber axis,resulting in reduced laser intensity and requiring index-matching oil immersion during FBG ***,the flat geometry and negligible surface roughness of the featured fiber significantly diminish this lensing distortion and eliminate the need for oil immersion,thereby resulting in optimal focusing of the laser beam,permitting direct and efficient inscription of FBGs within the optical *** core and cladding of the rectangular fiber were fabricated using two different grades of ZEONEX,a cyclo olefin polymer,which have slightly different refractive *** similar glass transition temperature for core and cladding simplifies the fiber drawing process,and a rectangular single-mode optical fiber with dimensions of 213μm×160μm and core diameter of 9.4μm was fabricated using an in-house fiber drawing facility.A second harmonic(520 nm)fs laser beam was used to successfully inscribe a 2-mm-long FBG in the rectangular fiber within a few seconds with a point-by-point *** inscription of a single FBG leads to the excitation of higher order FBG peaks at 866.8 and 1511.3 nm,corresponding to widely used wavelength bands in fiber optic *** strain and temperature sensitivities of the FBG were measured to be 7.31 nm=%ε(0.731pm∕με)and 10 pm/℃,and 12.95 nm∕%ε(1.29 pm∕με)and 15 pm/℃at 866.8 nm and 1511.3 nm,respectively.

Tumor lysis syndrome after transarterial chemoembolization of hepatocellular carcinoma: Case reports and literature review

Tumor lysis syndrome (TLS) is a potentially lethal complication in cancer therapy. It may occur in highly sensitive tumors, especially in childhood cancer and leukemia, whereas, it is rare in the treatment of solid tumors in adults. TLS results from a sudden and rapid release of nuclear and cytoplasmic degradation products of malignant cells. The release of these can lead to severe alterations in the metabolic prof ile. Here, we present two cases of large hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) treated by transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) that resulted in TLS. Although TLS rarely happens in the treatment of adult hepatic tumor, only a few cases have been reported. We should keep in mind that all patients with HCC, particularly those with large and rapidly growing tumors, must be closely watched for evidence of TLS after TACE.

Ghana's experience in the establishment of a national data center

The government of Ghana in a bilateral agreement with the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty Organization （CTBTO） has established a National Data Center in Ghana with the aim of monitoring the testing of nuclear explosions. Seismic, hydroacoustic, radionuclide and infrasound methods are used for the monitoring. The data center was commissioned on 3 February, 2010 at the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission. At present Ghana does not have any operational, centralised data （seismic, hydroacoustic, radionuclide and infrasound） acquisition system with the capability of accessing data from other international stations. Hence, the need of setting up the National Data Center which would enable us constantly monitor, manage and coordinate both natural and man-made seismic activities in the country and around the globe, upload data to the International Data Center （IDC） as well as receive and use International Monitoring System （IMS） data and IDC products for treaty verification and compliance. Apart from these, the center also accesses and analyzes seismic waveforms relevant to its needs from the International Data Center; makes data available to its stakeholder institutions for earthquake disaster mitigation; reports on all aspects of disasters related to earthquake to the relevant government agencies that deal with disasters; makes recommendations to the government of Ghana on earthquake safety measures; provides information to assist government institutions to develop appropriate land and building policies. The center in collaboration with stakeholder agencies periodically organises public lectures on earthquake disaster risk mitigation.

Contents of four active components in different commercial crude drugs and preparations of Danshen (Salvia miltiorrhiza)

AIM: To detect the contents of four active components of Salvia miltiorrhiza in various commercially available danshen crude drugs and preparations. METHODS: Commercially available danshen crude drugs from different sources, as well as danshen pills and intravenous injection preparations containing danshen alone or in combination with other herbs were collected. The composition of these danshen samples was analyzed using HPLC. Specifically, the amounts of magnesium tanshinoate B (MTB), danshensu, isotanshinone IIA, and ctyptotanshinone were determined. In some of these samples, the content of MTB was further confirmed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometer (LC-MS)/MS method. RESULTS: There were great variations in the amount of the four active ingredients in the commercially available danshen crude drugs and drug preparations in this study. Analysis of indoor set-point temperature of split-type ACs on thermal comfort and energy savings for office buildings in hot-humid climates

In hot-humid climates,particularly in sub-Saharan Africa(SSA),ambient temperatures and relative humidity are as high as 35°C and 84%,respectively,requiring the use of mechanical cooling systems for indoor thermal ***-type vapor-compression air-conditioners(SVAC)are mainly used for space cooling in SSA and consume 60-80%of total energy consumption in commercial and public *** control strategy of the indoor set-point temperature of SVAC can result in significant energy savings in these *** this study,modeling and dynamic simulation have been conducted using EnergyPlus to predict the energy saving potential and indoor thermal comfort of buildings in hot-humid climates by controlling set-point temperature of the *** a case study,climatic data for Ghana,was used to predict the energy saving potential and indoor thermal *** study results revealed that,to ensure indoor thermal comfort at high outdoor temperature condition of 35°C,the least and optimum set-point temperatures of the SVAC should be 21°C and 25°C,*** the other hand,for low outdoor temperature condition,the least and optimum set-point temperatures were 22°C and 26°C,*** 1-star and 2-star rated SVACs which are dominantly used in Ghana,operating at 21-25°C in the case of high outdoor conditions,and 22-26°C for low outdoor conditions relative to the least temperatures resulted in energy savings of 8-33%and 12-44%,respectively.

Cultural tourism is simply the business of people moving from one country or place for the motive of site seeing of culture events,festival and historical places which are managed to generate money. China and Ghana have a lot of cultural tourism sites but less is talked about them. this projects aims at bringing the dead news alive for study purpose and creating great awareness of a hiding and untapped source of income for booth countries apart from the orthodox trade and mineral investments that we know. The question is why don’t Chinese go to Ghana for cultural tourism and Ghanaians also coming to china for tourism but just for business trade and education? In my stay in china as a Ghanaian in china i realized that our Chinese host don’t have much information about Ghana apart from the ones they see on the media. just the same case of the Ghanaians who will not fly all the way to china just for holidays Both countries prefers to go to Europe,Americas for holidays and rather come to china for trade which is buy goods and send home for sale. Due to the scarcity of information on this side of tourism relations between both countries the researcher could not get much information but to depend on words of mouth and personal experience from deal with both Chinese and Ghanaian in and out of china. Recommendations were also made by the researcher to both ministries of foreign affairs and tourisms of both countries in promoting this sector as an altanative to the old trade and investment cooperations.

Utility of fusion CT-PET in the diagnosis of small pancreatic carcinoma

Pancreatic carcinoma has a poor prognosis and early detection is essential for potentially curative resection. Despite the wide array of diagnostic tools, preoperative detection of small pancreatic carcinomas remains difficult. We report a case of small pancreatic carcinoma of the head of pancreas with indeterminate findings on US, ERCP, MRI and EUS which was successfully diagnosed via fusion CT-PET. This case illustrates the utility of CT-PET in the diagnosis of patients with small pancreatic carcinoma with equivocal findings on conventional diagnostic modalities.
