Influence of thin-film device with curvature on natural frequency of rectangle membrane under uniaxial tension

Electrochemical CO_(2) reduction to produce value-added chemicals and fuels is one of the research hotspots in the field of energy *** development of efficient catalysts with high conductivity and readily accessible active sites for CO_(2) electroreduction remains challenging yet *** this work,a reliable poly(ethyleneimine)(PEI)-assisted strategy is developed to prepare a hollow carbon nanocomposite comprising a single-site Ni-modified carbon shell and confined Ni nanoparticles(NPs)(denoted as Ni@NHCS),where PEI not only functions as a mediator to induce the highly dispersed growth of Ni NPs within hollow carbon spheres,but also as a nitrogen precursor to construct highly active atomically-dispersed Ni-Nx *** from the unique structural properties of Ni@NHCS,the aggregation and exposure of Ni NPs can be effectively prevented,while the accessibility of abundant catalytically active Ni-Nx sites can be *** a result,Ni@NHCS exhibits a high CO partial current density of 26.9 mA cm^(-2) and a Faradaic efficiency of 93.0% at-1.0 V ***,outperforming those of its PEI-free *** from the excellent activity and selectivity,the shell confinement effect of the hollow carbon sphere endows this catalyst with long-term *** findings here are anticipated to help understand the structure-activity relationship in Ni-based carbon catalyst systems for electrocatalytic CO_(2) ***,the PEI-assisted synthetic concept is potentially applicable to the preparation of high-performance metal-based nanoconfined materials tailored for diverse energy conversion applications and beyond.

Efficacy of Uterine Artery Embolization for Patients with Postpartum Hemorrhage

Purpose: To investigate the efficacy of uterine arterial embolization (UAE) in patients with post-partum hemorrhage (PPH). Materials and Methods: The subjects were 40 women (mean age, 33 years;age range, 21 - 42 years) who underwent UAE for PPH at two institutes from June 2001 to May 2011. The rates of clinical success (avoidance of hysterectomy) and complications were calculated. Differences in related factors between primary PPH and secondary PPH and between caesarean section and vaginal delivery were examined. The risk factors associated with hysterectomy were also examined. Results: The overall clinical success rate was 90% (93% of primary PPH, 77% of secondary PPH, and 87.5% of PPH with cesarean section), and the overall complication rate was 10%. There were significant differences in time to PPH (P 1000 mL bleeding, P = 0.03), and embolization of non-uterine arteries (P = 0.02).

Cluster structures in stable and unstable nuclei

Cluster structures in light unstable nuclei are discussed. The structures of neutron-rich Be isotopes are theoretically investigated and the molecular orbital bond structure and its role in the vanishing of the neutron magic number N = 8 are discussed. The two-body cluster resonances in highly excited states of neutron-rich Li, Be and B isotopes are predicted theoretically.

Sample Size Calculation of Exact Tests for the Weak Causal Null Hypothesis in Randomized Trials with a Binary Outcome

The main purpose in many randomized trials is to make an inference about the average causal effect of a treatment. Therefore, on a binary outcome, the null hypothesis for the hypothesis test should be that the causal risks are equal in the two groups. This null hypothesis is referred to as the weak causal null hypothesis. Nevertheless, at present, hypothesis tests applied in actual randomized trials are not for this null hypothesis;Fisher’s exact test is a test for the sharp causal null hypothesis that the causal effect of treatment is the same for all subjects. In general, the rejection of the sharp causal null hypothesis does not mean that the weak causal null hypothesis is rejected. Recently, Chiba developed new exact tests for the weak causal null hypothesis: a conditional exact test, which requires that a marginal total is fixed, and an unconditional exact test, which does not require that a marginal total is fixed and depends rather on the ratio of random assignment. To apply these exact tests in actual randomized trials, it is inevitable that the sample size calculation must be performed during the study design. In this paper, we present a sample size calculation procedure for these exact tests. Given the sample size, the procedure can derive the exact test power, because it examines all the patterns that can be obtained as observed data under the alternative hypothesis without large sample theories and any assumptions.

BACKGROUND Secondary sclerosing cholangitis,characterized by biliary obstruction,can be caused by drugs such as immune checkpoint inhibitors(ICIs).While there a few reports of sclerosing cholangitis after immune checkpoint inhibitor administration,no case has been reported after discontinuation of such *** SUMMARY A 68-year-old man who underwent chemotherapy for lung adenocarcinoma with bone metastasis presented with abdominal pain and fever 4 mo after the final administration of *** tomography revealed thickening of the gallbladder wall and dilatation of the common bile *** retrograde cholangiopancreatography revealed an irregularly narrowed intrahepatic bile *** of the bile duct demonstrated that CD8+T cells were predominant over CD4+T *** biopsy showed dominant infiltration of CD8+T in the portal tract,but onion-skin lesions were not *** patient was diagnosed with immune-related sclerosing cholangitis induced by *** of methylprednisolone and endoscopic nasobiliary drainage were performed,but the cholangiography and laboratory test findings did not *** further treatment was administered due to disease progression,and the patient was referred for palliative *** Immune-related sclerosing cholangitis may have a late onset,and such cases occurring after discontinuation of ICIs should be carefully managed.

Controllable alignment of elongated microorganisms in 3D microspace using electrofluidic devices manufactured by hybrid femtosecond laser microfabrication

This paper presents a simple technique to fabricate new electrofluidic devices for the three-dimensional(3D)manipulation of microorganisms by hybrid subtractive and additive femtosecond(fs)laser microfabrication(fs laser-assisted wet etching of glass followed by water-assisted fs laser modification combined with electroless metal plating).The technique enables the formation of patterned metal electrodes in arbitrary regions in closed glass microfluidic channels,which can spatially and temporally control the direction of electric fields in 3D microfluidic *** fabricated electrofluidic devices were applied to nanoaquariums to demonstrate the 3D electro-orientation of Euglena gracilis(an elongated unicellular microorganism)in microfluidics with high controllability and *** particular,swimming Euglena cells can be oriented along the z-direction(perpendicular to the device surface)using electrodes with square outlines formed at the top and bottom of the channel,which is quite useful for observing the motions of cells parallel to their swimming ***,z-directional electric field control ensured efficient observation of manipulated cells on the front side(45 cells were captured in a minute in an imaging area of~160×120μm),resulting in a reduction of the average time required to capture the images of five Euglena cells swimming continuously along the z-direction by a factor of~43 compared with the case of no electric *** addition,the combination of the electrofluidic devices and dynamic imaging enabled observation of the flagella of Euglena cells,revealing that the swimming direction of each Euglena cell under the electric field application was determined by the initial body angle.

A Simple Method of Measuring Vaccine Effects on Infectiousness and Contagion

The vaccination of one person may prevent another from becoming infected, either because the vaccine may prevent the first person from acquiring the infection and thereby reduce the probability of transmission to the second, or because, if the first person is infected, the vaccine may impair the ability of the infectious agent to initiate new infections. The former mechanism is referred as a contagion effect and the latter is referred as an infectiousness effect. By applying a principal stratification approach, the conditional infectiousness effect has been defined, but the contagion effect is not defined using this approach. Recently, new definitions of unconditional infectiousness and contagion effects were provided by applying a mediation analysis approach. In addition, a simple relationship between conditional and unconditional infectiousness effects was found under a number of assumptions. These two infectiousness effects can be assessed by very simple estimation and sensitivity analysis methods under the assumptions. Nevertheless, such simple methods to assess the contagion effect have not been discussed. In this paper, we review the methods of assessing infectiousness effects, and apply them to the inference of the contagion effect. The methods provided here are illustrated with hypothetical vaccine trial data.

Causal Measures for Prognostic and Predictive Biomarkers

Researchers conducting randomized clinical trials with two treatment groups sometimes wish to determine whether biomarkers are predictive and/or prognostic. They can use regression models with interaction terms to assess the role of the biomarker of interest. However, although the interaction term is undoubtedly a suitable measure for prediction, the optimal way to measure prognosis is less clear. In this article, we define causal measures that can be used for prognosis and prediction based on biomarkers. The causal measure for prognosis is defined as the average of two differences in status between biomarker-positive and -negative subjects under treatment and control conditions. The causal measure for prediction is defined as the difference between the causal effect of the treatment for biomarker-positive and biomarker-negative subjects. We also explain the relationship between the proposed measures and the regression parameters. The causal measure for prognosis corresponds to the terms for the biomarker in a regression model, where the values of the dummy variables representing the explanatory variables are -1/2 or 1/2. The causal measure for prediction is simply the causal effect of the interaction term in a regression model. In addition, for a binary outcome, we express the causal measures in terms of four response types: always-responder, complier, non-complier, and never-responder. The causal measure for prognosis can be expressed as a function of always- and never-responders, and the causal measure for prediction as a function of compliers and non-compliers. This enables us to demonstrate that the proposed measures are plausible in the case of a binary outcome. Our causal measures should be used to assess whether a biomarker is prognostic and/or predictive.
