Sustainable Campus Initiative at Keio University after the Great East Japan Earthquake Disaster

After the shock of the Great East Japan Earthquake on 11 March 2011, the issue of local sustainability is presently center stage in the Japanese political process, and educational and research values are imperative for long-term cost savings, risk management, and clean, efficient energy generation. This study illustrates the Sustainable Campus Initiative approach at Keio University that students have been undertaking to make the campus more sustainable and resilient during post-disaster restoration. To unveil innovative recovery concepts, processes, and social challenges, several outcomes that maximize energy efficiency and conservation opportunities are discussed. The results indicate that the Sustainable Campus Initiative contributed to energy relief in the summer of 2011. It made campus life more creative during a period when the 15 percent mandatory power-saving order by the government to big clients of Tokyo and Tohoku Electric was established. Pilot experiments provide a useful example of how the communications media have an extraordinary ability to increase public understanding of social issues. Since the March 11 disaster, power shortages have redirected renewed attention to fossil fuels. As large energy consumers, universities have an increased responsibility to demonstrate their commitment to sustainable design and encourage innovative development concepts in their regions in the future.

While fatty acids play essential roles in the physiology of the myocardium,conventional culture media contain little *** previously revealed that rat neonatal myocardium mainly contains docosahexaenoic(DHA),linoleic(LA),and arachidonic(AA)acids as polyunsaturated fatty acids(PUFAs),and these contents in cultured cardiomyocytes derived from fetal rats were markedly lower than those in the neonatal *** this study,we first assessed the effects of supplementation of DHA,LA,or AA on the fatty acid contents and the percentage change of contractile area in primarily cultured rat *** on this assessment,we then evaluated the effects of DHA or AA supplementation on mRNA expression and further directly measured the contractile force of cardiomyocytes with the *** study revealed that percentage change of contractile area was maximized under 20μM DHA or 50μM AA supplementation while LA supplementation did not affect this contraction index,and that a widespread upregulation tendency of the mRNA expression related to differentiation,maturity,fatty acid metabolism,and cell adhesion was seen in the cultured cardiomyocytes with supplementation of DHA or *** particular,upregulation of the gene expression of cellular adhesion molecules connexin43 and N-cadherin were remarkable,whereas the effects on differentiation and maturation were less ***,the increase of the percentage change of the contractile area of cardiomyocyte clusters in culture dishes with the supplementations was significant,whereas the enhancement of the contractile force was *** results suggest that supplementation of DHA or AA to the fetal cardiomyocyte culture may play effective roles in preventing the de-differentiation of the cardiomyocytes in culture and that the enhancement of the contractile performance may be mainly attributed to the improvement of intercellular connection.

We studied the effects of reductive annealing on insulating polycrystalline thin films of anatase Nb- doped TiO2 （TNO）. The insulating TNO films were intentionally fabricated by annealing conductive TNO films in oxygen ambient at 400 ℃. Reduced free carrier absorption in the insulating TNO films indicated carrier com- pensation due to excess oxygen. With H2-annealing, both carrier density and Hall mobility recovered to the level of conducting TNO, demonstrating that the excess oxygen can be efficiently removed by the annealing process without introducing additional scattering centers.

The monomer agglomeration of nonmetallic inclusions was simulated with a diffusion limited aggregation （DLA） model of the fractal theory. The simulation study with a random two-dimensional diffusion was carried out. The results indicate that the DLA model can be used for the simulation of agglomeration behavior of the cluster-type inclusions. The morphology of clusters was observed with SEM and compared with the simulated agglomerates. The modelling procedure of the DLA model is applicable for the agglomeration process. The uncertainty of agglomeration process and the persuasive average agglomerative ratio was analyzed. The factors about the agglomerative ratio with the collision path distance and the size of particles or seed were discussed. The adherence of the nonmetallic inclusions on the dam, the weir and the walls of a tundish, and the absorption of inclusions by stopper or nozzle were also discussed.

目的:探讨作用于大跨度曲面屋盖非定常气动力的特性,为考虑非定常气动力影响的大跨度曲面屋盖抗风设计提供理论参考。创新点:1.采用强迫振动试验;2.采用大涡模拟(LES)流入脉动风的生成方法;3.研究大跨度曲面屋盖非定常气动力特性。方法:1.通过强迫振动风洞试验方法探讨风速、强迫振动振幅、屋盖的矢跨比和缩减频率对非定常气动力的影响;2.采用计算流体力学数值模拟重现风洞试验,从而在更宽的缩减频率范围内分析非定常气动力的特性,并且通过可视化流场的分析探讨风与屋盖相互作用的机理。结论:1.屋盖的振动对屋盖表面的风压分布影响较大。2.屋盖的振动可能抑制屋盖背风面漩涡的脱落。3.根据风洞试验和数值模拟的结果分析得到的矢跨比、风速和振动振幅对气动阻尼系数和气动刚度系数的影响较小;气动阻尼系数和气动刚度系数主要随着缩减频率的变化而变化。4.气动刚度系数为正值,使得结构的总刚度减小,从而减小结构的固有频率;气动阻尼系数为负值,使得结构总阻尼增加。5.风洞试验和LES模拟结果的一致性可以说明,LES是一个能够有效研究非定常气动力特性的数值模拟方法。

Comparison of Charging Characteristics of Polymerized and Pulverized Toners

Toner charge is very important in electrophotographic printing process. Although many studies on toner charging mechanism have been carried out, the mechanism is very complex and the understanding of toner charging characteristics is not yet sufficient. Toner charge distribution is measured by E-SPART (electrical single particle aerodynamic relaxation time) analyzer, which can measure the size and charge of toner. The measured toners are polymerized and pulverized type. Charging is carried out as follows : the toner is mixed with the carrier and the mixture is bottled into the roller, and mixed by rotating the roller. Toner charge dependences on toner wt% are compared between polymerized and pulverized toner.

Overexpression of the receptor tyrosine kinase EphA4 in human gastric cancers

AIM: To clarify the expression and role of Ephrin receptor A4 (EphA4) in gastric cancer in relation to clinicopathological characteristics and the expression of fibroblast growth factor receptor 1 (FGFR1) and ephrin ligands. METHODS: Eleven gastric carcinoma cell lines, 24 paired surgical fresh specimens of gastric adenocarcinoma and adjacent nontumor tissue, 74 conventional formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tumor specimens, and 55 specimens spotted on tissue microarray (TMA) were analyzed. Reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR), real-time RT-PCR, immunohistochemistry, and cell growth assays were performed. RESULTS: Overexpression of EphA4 mRNA expres-sion was observed in 8 (73%) of 11 gastric cancer cell lines and 10 (42%) of 24 gastric cancer tissues. Over-expression of EphA4, analyzed by immunohistochemistry, was observed in 62 (48%) of 129 gastric cancer tissues. EphA4 overexpression, at the protein level, was significantly associated with depth of invasion and recurrence. EphA4 overexpression was also correlated with FGFR1 overexpression. Patients with EphA4-positive cancer had significantly shorter overall survival periods than did those with EphA4-negative cancer (P = 0.0008). The mRNAs for ephrin ligands were coexpressed in various combinations in gastric cancer cell lines and cancer tissues. Downregulation of EphA4 expression by siRNA in EphA4-overexpressing gastric cancer cell lines resulted in a significant decrease in cell growth. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that overexpres-sion of EphA4 plays a role in gastric cancer.

We isolated cDNA encoding porcine MyD88 （poMyD88） from Peyer＇s patches （Pps） of GALT. The complete open reading frame （ORF） of poMyD88 contains 879 bp encoding a deduced 293 aa residues. The amino acid sequence of poMyD88 was characterized by N-terminal death, intermediate and C-terminal Toll/IL-1 receptor （TIR） domains. The putative poMyD88 protein shares a higher level of homology with its human （87.2% amino acid identity） than with its mouse （77.4% amino acid identity） counterpart. Overexpression of poMyD88 participated in the further enhanced activation of NF-w.B in human embryonic kidney （HEK） 293 cells expressing porcine TLR2 and porcine TLR4/MD-2, but not porcine RP105/MD-1 after stimulation with the corresponding ligands. The expression levels of MyD88 were highest in the spleen and mesenteric lymph nodes （MLNs）, and lower in digestive tissues of newborn swine. In adult swine, the expression levels in the digestive tissues were lower than those in MLNs and the spleen. These results suggest that an MyD88-dependent signaling pathway is present in newborn as well as in adult swine and that it is involved in the innate immune system of these animals.
