ESR Signal Intensity and Crystallinity of Quartz from Three Major Asian Dust Sources: Implication for Tracing the Provenances of Eolian Dust

We measured Electron Spin Resonance(ESR) signal intensity and Crystallinity Index(CI) of fine-(16 m) quartz in surface samples collected from the Taklimakan desert in western China, the Badain Juran, Tengger and Mu Us deserts in northern China, and the Gobi desert in southern Mongolia. The aim was to test if these two parameters can be used as the accurate provenance tracers of Asian dust. Coarse-grained quartz displays spatial variability of the ESR signal intensity within each desert and of the CI within the Taklimakan and the Mongolian Gobi deserts. Coarse-grained quartz derived from the Mongolian Gobi and northern China deserts can be differentiated from the Taklimakan desert using the ESR signal intensity. By contrast, variability of ESR signal intensity and CI of fine-grained quartz particles is distinct within the Taklimakan and the Mongolian Gobi deserts, but less significant in three deserts of northern China. Spatially, fine-grained dust originating from three major Asian dust sources(i.e., the Gobi-sandy deserts in western China, northern China and southern Mongolia) can be differentiated using the combination of the ESR and CI signals. Our results suggest that combination of the ESR and CI results can discriminate the sources of fine-grained dust better than coarse-grained dust, providing an effective approach to trace the provenance of fine-grained dust depositions on the land and in the ocean.

Computer-Aided Design and Fabrication of Finger Prosthesis

Custom-made esthetic finger prostheses, which are used for rehabilitation of patients with missing or impaired fingers, have been fabricated manually. However, such fabrication is time-consuming and requires manual skill. Here we propose a computer-aided method for fabricating finger pros-theses to save time and allow fabrications that do not require considerable manual skill. In this method, the dimensions of a patient’s healthy finger on the contralateral hand are first measured using a caliper. Using these dimensions, a three-dimensional model is constructed for fabricating a prosthesis for the patient’s impaired finger. Using the 3D model, a mold is designed using 3D modeling tools and a computer-aided design system. The resulting mold is then fabricated using a 3D printer. A finger prosthesis is fabricated by pouring silicone resin into the mold. A finger prosthesis for a volunteer was experimentally fabricated according to the proposed method. To evaluate the size and shape of the finger prosthesis, the difference between the finger prosthesis and the original finger of the volunteer was analyzed. Because the average difference between them was 0.25 mm, it was concluded that the proposed method could be used to fabricate a finger prosthesis of adequate size and shape.

Application of Nanofiber Fabricated by Cotton Candy Method to Electric Double-Layer Capacitor

In recent years, application of carbon-based nano material to electrode material has been paid attention, however, due to its higher cost, it would be difficult to put it into practical use. Then, we have proposed to make nano carbon fiber with lower production cost. The purpose of our research was, to apply our nano carbon fiber to electrical double-layer capacitor electrode. We used cotton candy method to make nano fiber, and applied microwave heating for carbonization. By applying nano carbon fiber to electrical double-layer capacitor electrode, we got results that thicker electrode containing nano carbon fiber leads to lower resistance value, compared with electrode without containing nano carbon fiber. From this result, it was indicated that by containing nano carbon fiber, the electric bypass was formed in the electrode.

Down Regulation of MyD88 in Macrophages Treated with Liposomes Composed of Phosphatidylserine

We have recently demonstrated that liposomes composed of phosphatidylserine (PS-liposomes) suppressed nitric oxide and inflammatory cytokine productions following LPS stimulation in macrophages. In this study, we examined the effect of PS-liposomes on expressions of TLR-4 and MyD88, which are essential for the signal transduction in LPS stimulation. Expression of MyD88 was suppressed when macrophages were treated with PS-liposomes, but not with liposomes of phosphatidylcholine. No change in TLR-4 expression was observed. MyD88 suppression was restored to the control levels when cells were pre-treated with anti-TGF-β antibody, suggesting that TGF-β plays an important role in down-regulation of MyD88 following PS-liposome treatment.

Maleylated-BSA induces TNF-α production through the ERK and NF-κB signaling pathways in murine RAW264.7 macrophages

Ligands for macrophage scavenger receptors are reported to induce a wide range of host cell responses, including the production of inflammatory cytokines;however, the underlying mechanisms have not yet been fully understood and which remain obscure. In this study, we have examined the effect of maleylated bovine serum albumin (maleylated-BSA), a well-known ligand of the scavenger receptor, on the murine macrophage cell line RAW264.7. Maleylated-BSA strongly induced the production of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and induced phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) and NF-kB p65. We also observed that maleylated-BSA-induced TNF-α production was blocked by the ERK inhibitor U0126. Together, these data demonstrates that maleylated-BSA- induced production of TNF-α requires the ERK/NF-κB signaling cascade in murine RAW- 264.7 macrophages.

Detection of the <i>PIK3CA</i>Mutation in Circulating Tumor DNA as a Possible Predictive Indicator for Poor Prognosis of Early-Stage Breast Cancer

Objectives: Circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) is shown to provide the real-time genomic information of metastatic breast cancer. This study elucidates the clinico-pathological significance of ctDNA in early-stage breast cancer using the PIK3CA mutation as an indicator. Materials and Methods: Twenty-seven primary breast cancers without metastasis were surgically resected and pathologically diagnosed at the University of Tokyo Hospital, Japan. Genomic DNA of primary tumor was extracted from formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded specimens. ctDNA was extracted from fresh-frozen plasma from patients. The PIK3CA mutations at E542K, E545K and H1047R were examined by Sanger sequencing or droplet digital PCR in 27 tumors and pre- and post-surgery plasma. Results: The PIK3CA mutations were detected in 13 (48%) of 27 primary tumors. These mutations did not significantly correlate with specific clinico-pathological characteristics of tumors. When ctDNA was examined, 4 (33%) of 12 cases carrying the mutated PIK3CA showed the identical mutation in pre-surgery plasma and 2 (50%) of them showed the identical mutations in post-surgery plasma. Interestingly, in these 2 cases in pathological stages IIIA and IA, fractional abundance of the mutated PIK3CA alleles to the total alleles in pre-surgery ctDNA was around 1% or more and was higher than that of the other two cases without PIK3CA mutations in post-surgery ctDNA. Conclusions: The PIK3CA mutation in ctDNA is detectable even in a subset of early-stage breast cancer. Furthermore, fractional abundance of the mutated PIK3CA in pre-surgery ctDNA could provide a possible predictive indicator for tumor burden and for choosing the appropriate adjuvant treatment of breast cancer.

Photoimmunotherapy for Local Recurrence of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma: A Case Report

Photoimmunotherapy (PIT), developed by the National Cancer Institute, involves Cetuximab sarotalocan sodium infusion followed by laser irradiation. PIT exerts specific antitumor effects on a variety of carcinomas that express epidermal growth factor receptors. PIT is a new cancer treatment option approved by Japan ahead of other countries worldwide. As of 2022, PIT is indicated in “unresectable, locally advanced, or locally recurrent head and neck cancer, with priority given to standard treatments such as chemotherapy when available”. The conventional treatment for unresectable locally advanced or locally recurrent head and neck cancer is palliative. Whether photoimmunotherapy can be curative for unresectable locally advanced head and neck cancers depends on the case. Herein, we report a case of locally recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma, treated with photoimmunotherapy via the nasal cavity, along with a literature review. Preoperative simulation provided considerable information on device selection, numbers of devices, and availability of working space. As a result, a complete response was obtained following a cylindrical diffuser puncture. Cases of local recurrence of nasopharyngeal carcinoma are considered a good indication for PIT. However, since the follow-up period after treatment was short in this case, we will continue to conduct strict follow-ups and accumulate more cases.

In recent years, environmental problems are becoming serious and renewable energy has attracted attention as their solutions. However, the electricity generation using the renewable energy has a demerit that the output becomes unstable because of intermittent characteristics, such as variations of wind speed or solar radiation intensity. Frequency fluctuations due to the installation of large scale wind farm (WF) and photovoltaics (PV) into the power system is a major concern. In order to solve the problem, this paper proposes two control methods using High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) interconnection line to suppress the frequency fluctuations due to large scale of WF and PV. Comparative analysis between these two control methods is presented in this paper. One proposed method is a frequency control using a notch filter, and the other is using a deadband. Validity of the proposed methods is verified through simulation analyses, which is performed on a multi-machine power system model.

Efficacy of Infliximab Therapy for a Patient with Superficial Thrombophlebitis and Rheumatoid Arthritis

Superficial thrombophlebitis is known as a frequent complication of Beh?et’s disease. Infliximab may promote healing of superficial thrombophlebitis in patients with Beh?et’s disease. However, thrombophlebitis as a complication of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is rare and treatments have not been reported. We describe the case of a 47-year-old man with RA with complications of superficial thrombophlebitis who was treated using methotrexate and infliximab. Erythema nodosum and cord-like induration with pain in the extremities completely disappeared following a single infusion of infliximab and oral acetylsalicylic acid was not needed. This case suggests that infliximab might offer effective treatment for patients showing superficial thrombophlebitis with RA.
