Molecular Phylogeny and Evolution of Two Rhacophorus Species Endemic to Mainland Japan

We conducted molecular phylogenetic analyses of Japanese Rhacophorus species, especially of R. schlegelii and R. arboreus from the mainland, based on samples encompassing their known distribution ranges, and discussed about evolutionary history of Rhacophorus species within Japan. The common ancestor of Japanese Rhacophorus, except for R. owstoni from southern Ryukyus, was estimated to have diverged from a lineage occurring mainly in China about 7 MYBP. Both R. schlegelii and R. arboreus are genetically largely divergent between regions of eastern and western Japan, and this seems to have been promoted mainly by retreat to refugia. Retreats of the two species to different refugia sometimes in the past seem to have led restricted distribution of R. schlegelii in eastern and R. arboreus in western Japan, and brought their intraspecific variation patterns in morphology and breeding habit.

A hydrochemical study of the Hammam Righa geothermal waters in north-central Algeria

This study focuses on the hydrochemical characteristics of 47 water samples collected from thermal and cold springs that emerge from the Hammam Righa geothermal ?eld, located in north-central Algeria. The aquifer that feeds these springs is mainly situated in the deeply fractured Jurassic limestone and dolomite of the Zaccar Mount. Measured discharge temperatures of the cold waters range from 16.0 to 26.5 °C and the hot waters from 32.1 to 68.2 °C. All waters exhibited a near-neutral p H of 6.0–7.6. The thermal waters had a high total dissolved solids(TDS) content of up to 2527 mg/l, while the TDS for cold waters was 659.0–852.0 mg/l. Chemical analyses suggest that two main types of water exist: hot waters in the up?ow area of the Ca–Na–SO_4type(Hammam Righa) and cold waters in the recharge zone of the Ca–Na–HCO_3type(Zaccar Mount). Reservoir temperatures were estimated using silica geothermometers and?uid/mineral equilibria at 78, 92, and 95 °C for HR4, HR2,and HR1, respectively. Stable isotopic analyses of the δ^(18)O and δD composition of the waters suggest that the thermal waters of Hammam Righa are of meteoric origin. We conclude that meteoric recharge in?ltrates through the fractured dolomitic limestones of the Zaccar Mount and is conductively heated at a depth of 2.1–2.2 km. The hot waters then interact at depth with Triassic evaporites located in the hydrothermal conduit(fault), giving rise to the Ca–Na–SO_4water type. As they ascend to the surface,the thermal waters mix with shallower Mg-rich groundwater, resulting in waters that plot in the immature water?eld in the Na–K–Mg diagram. The mixing trend between cold groundwaters from the recharge zone area(Zaccar Mount) and hot waters in the up?ow area(Hammam Righa) is apparent via a chloride-enthalpy diagram that shows a mixing ratio of 22.6 \ R \ 29.2 %. We summarize these results with a geothermal conceptual model of the Hammam Righa geothermal ?eld.

Simultaneous processes such as parallel turningor milling offer great opportunities for more efficientmanufacturing because of their higher material removalrates. To maximize their advantages, chatter suppressiontechnologies for simultaneous processes must be devel-oped. In this study, we constructed an automatic chattersuppression system with optimal pitch control for shared-surface parallel turning with rigid tools and a flexibleworkpiece, integrating in-process chatter monitoring basedon the cutting force estimation. The pitch angle betweentwo tools is tuned adaptively in a position control system inaccordance with the chatter frequency at a certain spindlespeed, in a similar manner as the design methodology forvariable-pitch cutters. The cutting force is estimatedwithout using an additional external sensor by employing amulti-encoder-based disturbance observer. In addition, thechatter frequency is measured during the process by per-forming a low-computational-load spectrum analysis at acertain frequency range, which makes it possible to cal-culate the power spectrum density in the control system ofthe machine tool. Thus, the constructed system for automatic chatter suppression does not require any addi-tional equipment.

Si photonics becomes one of the research focuses in the field of photonics. Si-based light-emitting devices are one of the most important devices in this field. In this paper, we review the Si-based light-emitting devices fabricated by embedding Ge self-assembled quantum dots into optical microcavities. Ge self-assembled quantum dots emit light in the telecommunication wavelength range from 1.3 to 1.6 pro, for which Si is transparent. Ge self- assembled quantum dots were grown on silicon-on- insulator （SOI） by molecular beam epitaxy （MBE） in Stranski-Krastanov （S-K） mode. Then, electron beam lithography （EBL） was used to define the pattern of optical microcavities on the wafer. Finally, the pattern was transferred onto the Si/Ge slab by inductive coupled plasma （ICP） dry etching. Room-temperature photolumi- nescence （PL） was used to characterize the light-emitting properties of fabricated devices. The results showed that strong resonant light emission was observed in different optical microcavities. Significant enhancement of the intensity was obtained by the optical resonance. Based on the results of PL, we designed and fabricated current- injected light-emitting devices based on Ge self-assembled quantum dots in optical microcavities. Room-temperature resonant light emission was observed from Ge dots in a 3.8 μm microdisk resonator.

A 72-year-old male gastric cancer patient with outlet obstruction underwent laparoscopic exploration. The examination disclosed intraperitoneal free cancer cells with no overt peritoneal, lymphatic, or hepatic metastasis. The patient underwent laparoscopy-assisted gastroje-junostomy (LAGJ) and started chemotherapy with S-1 plus cisplatin on postoperative day 13. Three course of the chemotherapy shrank the tumor markedly. Then, the patient underwent gastrectomy with a curative intent. Laparotomy revealed no intraperitoneal free cancer cells, and microscopically complete resection was achieved. The patient received S-1 chemotherapy as postoperative adjuvant treatment for 1 year, and is still alive with no evidence of peritoneal recurrence. LAGJ followed by S-1 plus cisplatin is one of the optional treatments that should be considered for patients with outlet obstruction as it may widen opportunities for potentially curative resection.
