Kissing molars (KMs) is a condition of occlusal molar surfaces in a single follicular space with roots extending in opposite directions. Here, we have reported a case of KMs in a 58-year-old woman. The patient complained of pain in the right mandibular molar region and was diagnosed with KMs consisting of the right mandibular second and third molars. Because of the patient’s pain having subsided at the time of the visit and her unwillingness to undergo tooth extraction, the patient was followed up. KMs is classified into three classes (I-III) and is either true-KMs or pseudo-KMs and presents with or without cystic variants of dental follicles. The presents as true-KMs class II without a cystic variant. With reference to the literature and based on our analysis, the mean age of patients affected by this specific case of KMs is 31.7 years and unilateral KMs is relatively more common (85.7%). Histopathological findings of dentigerous cysts are more often indicated (42.9%). The treatment policy for KMs should therefore be based on the classification of KMs. Importantly, the focus should be on preserving the first and second molars as much as possible. The treatment approach, such as the employment of surgical removal or orthodontics, should be determined by considering the associated factors such as the crowns, tissues, and age of the patient.

Mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs)have abilities to mediate tissue protection through mechanisms of antiapoptosis,anti-oxidative stress and anti-fibrosis as well as tissue regeneration through mechanisms of cell proliferation,differentiation and angiogenesis.These effects by MSCs are mediated by a variety of factors,including growth factors,cytokines and extracellular vesicles(EVs).Among these factors,EVs,containing proteins,mRNA and microRNAs(miRNA),may carry their contents into distant tissues with high stability.Therefore,the treatment with MSC-derived EVs may be promising as‘natural’drug delivery systems(DDS).Especially,the treatment of MSCderived EVs with the manipulation of specific miRNAs expression has been reported to be beneficial under a variety of diseases and tissue injuries.The overexpression of specific miRNAs in the EVs might be through pre-loading method using the gene editing system by plasmid vector or post-loading method to load miRNA mimics into EVs by electroporation or calcium chloride-mediated transfection.Despite current several challenges for clinical use,it should open the next era of regenerative medicine for a variety of diseases.In this article,we highlight the therapeutic potential of MSC-derived EVs as‘natural’DDS and current challenges.

An effective method for laboratory acoustic emission detection and location using template matching

In this paper, a template matching and location method, which has been rapidly adopted in microseismic research in recent years, is applied to laboratory acoustic emission(AE) monitoring. First, we used traditional methods to detect P-wave first motions and locate AE hypocenters in three dimensions. In addition, we selected events located with sufficient accuracy(normally corresponding AE events of relatively larger energy, showing clear P-wave first motion and a higher signal-to-noise ratio in most channels) as template events. Then, the template events were used to scan and match other poorly located events in triggered event records or weak events in continuous records. Through crosscorrelation of the multi-channel waveforms between the template and the event to be detected, the weak signal was detected and located using a grid-searching algorithm(with the grid centered at the template hypocenter). In order to examine the performance of the approach, we calibrated the proposed method using experimental data of different rocks and different types of experiments. The results show that the proposed method can significantly improve the detection capability and location accuracy, and can be applied to various laboratory and in situ experiments, which use multi-channel AE monitoring with waveforms recorded in either triggering or continuous mode.

BACKGROUND Preoperative evaluation of future remnant liver reserves is important for safe hepatectomy.If the remnant is small,preoperative portal vein embolization(PVE)is useful.Liver volume analysis has been the primary method of preoperative evaluation,although functional examination may be more accurate.We have used the functional evaluation liver using the indocyanine green plasma clearance rate(KICG)and 99mTc-galactosyl human serum albumin single-photon emission computed tomography(99mTc-GSA SPECT)for safe hepatectomy.AIM To analyze the safety of our institution’s system for evaluating the remnant liver reserve.METHODS We retrospectively reviewed the records of 23 patients who underwent preoperative PVE.Two types of remnant liver KICG were defined as follows:Anatomical volume remnant KICG(a-rem-KICG),determined as the remnant liver anatomical volume rate×KICG;and functional volume remnant KICG(frem-KICG),determined as the remnant liver functional volume rate based on 99mTc-GSA SPECT×KICG.If either of the remnant liver KICGs were>0.05,a hepatectomy was performed.Perioperative factors were analyzed.We defined the marginal group as patients with a-rem-KICG of0.05 and compared the postoperative outcomes between the marginal and not marginal(both a-rem-KICG and f-rem-KICG>0.05)groups.RESULTS All 23 patients underwent planned hepatectomies.Right hepatectomy,right trisectionectomy and left trisectionectomy were in 16,6 and 1 cases,respectively.The mean of blood loss and operative time were 576 mL and 474 min,respectively.The increased amount of frem-KICG was significantly larger than that of a-rem-KICG after PVE(0.034 vs 0.012,P=0.0273).The not marginal and marginal groups had 17(73.9%)and 6(26.1%)patients,respectively.The complications of Clavian-Dindo classification grade II or higher and post-hepatectomy liver failure were observed in six(26.1%)and one(grade A,4.3%)patient,respectively.The 90-d mortality was zero.The marginal group had no significant difference in postoperative outcomes

Diagnostic criteria for autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP) have been proposed and used clinically because, despite its unique clinicopathological features, AIP does not have disease-specific serological tests for confirmation. However, diagnosis of a patient with pancreatic lesions mimicking cancer who deviates from these diagnostic criteria is still difficult. We present herein a patient with a variant form of AIP successfully diagnosed by fine-needle biopsy, whose response to steroid therapy was excellent. A 55-year-old Japanese man was admitted to hospital because of jaundice and pancreatic head mass. AIP was considered as one of the differential diagnoses; however, as the patient showed neither pancreatic duct narrowing nor immunological abnormalities, he did not meet the Japanese diagnostic criteria for AIP. Histopathology of the pancreatic mass demonstrated abundant infiltration by lymphocytes and interstitial fibrosis, which suggested AIP. Immunoreaction to IgG4, which is supposed to be specific to AIP, was not observed; however, response to subsequent prednisolone therapy was good, with dramatic pancreatic head mass regression. Aside from the pancreatic head mass, diffusely spreading small lesions were observed throughout the liver. The likelihood of a potential association with extrapancreatic lesions of AIP was considered and led us to carry out a liver biopsy, which revealed biliary hamartoma, also called von Meyenburg complex (VMC). As IgG4-positive plasma cell infiltration was not demonstrated in the hamartomatous regions, the hepatic condition was thought to have occurred incidentally; however, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first report in which the association between AIP and VMC was investigated and discussed.

Single crystals subjected to shock compression exhibit responses with distinct two-wave structures for certain crystal orientations.However,little is known to date regarding how the shock response depends on crystal orientation,and especially why the two-wave structure depends on the crystal orientation.In this work,molecular dynamics simulations of shock compressions in copper single crystals are performed to investigate the orientation dependence of shock responses and the corresponding deformation mechanisms.Four copper single crystals with[001],[011],[012],and[123]crystal orientations along the depth direction are investigated.The[011],[012],and[123]crystal orientations of copper single crystals show distinct two-wave structures in their shock responses,while such a two-wave structure in the shock response is not seen for those orientations having a[001]crystal orientation.The potential causes are analyzed by considering the propagation velocities of both elastic and plastic waves.We develop a technique for identifying twin structures in face-centered cubic crystals and this technique can effectively identify the twin structure.The morphology of shock-induced defects(e.g.,dislocations and twins)shows the significant dependence of crystal orientation and the mechanisms behind these are discussed in detail.Finally,the Johnson-Cook constitutive model describing dynamic deformations at high temperatures and high strain rates is used to analyze the relationships between the shock responses and microscopic defects.The predictions of the Johnson-Cook constitutive model are consistent with the results of the molecular dynamics simulations.

CO_(2) capture and utilization(CCU)is an effective strategy to mitigate global warming.Absorption,adsorption and membranes are methods used for CO_(2) separation and capture,and various catalytic pathways have also been developed for CO_(2) utilization.Although widely researched and used in industry,these processes are energy-intensive and this challenge needs to be overcome.To realize further optimization,novel materials and processes are continuously being developed.New generation materials such as ionic liquids(ILs)have shown promising potential for cost-effective CO_(2) capture and utilization.This study reviews the current status of ILs-based solvents,adsorbents,membranes,catalysts and their hybrid processes for CO_(2) capture and utilization.The special properties of ILs are integrated into new materials through hybridization,which significantly improves the performance in the process of CCU.

Toner Display Based on Movement of Tribo-electrically Charged Particles

The mechanism of toner display based on an electrical movement of black and white charged particles has been investigated. Two kinds of particles of black and white charged in the different electric polarity are enclosed in two ITO transparent electrodes using an insulating spacer. The particle movement is controlled by the external electric field applied between two transparent electrodes. The black toner is adhered on the electrode by an electrostatic force across the CTL to display a black image. The toners can be put back to the counter electrode by applying a reverse electric field, and a white image is formed. The black and white solid images are displayed by the switch of polarity of applied voltage in toner display cell. The polarity of charge and the value of charge to mass ratio of two particles were measured by observation of the particle separation on the surface-type electrodes and using q/m meter, respectively.

A Nano-Cantilever Method for Crack Initiation at the Free Edge of the Cu/Si Interface in Nanoscale Components

Straight and Bent nano-cantilever specimens are respectively proposed to investigate the single-mode and mixed-mode crack initiation at the Cu/Si interface edge in nanoscale components. With a minute loading apparatus, all nanoscale samples are in situ loaded and observed. Numerical analysis is employed to acquire the critical interfacial stress distributions during crack initiation. The stress concentration regions near the edge of Cu/Si interface in all specimens are within the scale of 100 nm, and the critical normal and shear stresses have a circular relation in nanoscale components, which represents the fracture criterion of the interface in nanoscale components.
