Crystal morphology of metal oxides in engineered metal-biochar composites governs the removal of phosphorus(P)from aqueous *** to our best knowledge,preparation of bio-assembled mgO-coated biochar and its application for the removal of P from solutions and kitchen waste fermentation liquids have not yet been ***,in this study,a needle-like mgO particle coated tea waste biochar composite(mTC)was prepared through a novel biological assembly and template elimination *** produced mTC was used as an adsorbent for removing P from a synthetic solution and real kitchen waste fermentation *** maximum P sorption capacities of the mTC,deduced from the Langmuir model,were 58.80 mg g^(−1) from the solution at pH 7 and 192.8 mg g^(−1) from the fermentation liquid at pH *** increase of ionic strength(0-0.1 mol L^(−1) NaNO_(3))reduced P removal efficiency from 98.53%to 93.01%in the synthetic solution but had no significant impact on P removal from the fermentation *** of mgHPO4 and mg(H2PO4)2(76.5%),ligand exchange(18.0%),and electrostatic attraction(5.5%)were the potential mechanisms for P sorption from the synthetic solution,while struvite formation(57.6%)and ligand exchange(42.2%)governed the sorption of P from the kitchen waste fermentation *** to previously reported mgO-biochar composites,mTC had a lower P sorption capacity in phosphate solution but a higher P sorption capacity in fermentation ***,the studied mTC could be used as an effective candidate for the removal of P from aqueous environments,and especially from the fermentation *** the future,it will be necessary to systematically compare the performance of metal-biochar composites with different metal oxide crystal morphology for P removal from different types of wastewater.

Effect of Osteoprotegerin and XRCC3 Genes Polymorphisms with the Occurrence of Left Ventricular Hypertrophy in Hypertensive Patients

Background: High blood pressure is associated with adverse morphological and functional changes in the cardiovascular system, including left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH). Osteoprotegerin (OPG) is a member of the tumor necrosis factor receptor superfamily of cytokines. X-ray repair cross-complementing protein 3 (XRCC3) is involved in the repair pathway for double-strand breaks (DSBs). We assessed the association of osteoprotegerin and XRCC3 gene polymorphisms with the occurrence of left ventricular hypertrophy in hypertensive patients. Patients and methods: The study included 50 hypertensive patients: 25 with LVH (group A) and 25 without LVH (group B). All cases were subjected to complete history taking and clinical examination. ECG and echocardiography were done. LV mass was calculated to detect the presence or absence of LV hypertrophy. DNA was extracted from blood samples, and then, each DNA sample was amplified in PCRs, to detect osteoprotogrin and XRCC3 gene polymorphisms. Results: mean age in the cases in group A is 63.12 years and in group B was 58.24 years with statistically significant difference between the two groups. The duration of the disease and SBP revealed statistically significant difference between the two groups. The LV mass index and E/A ratio revealed high statistically significant difference between the two groups. OPG sequence revealed no statistically significant difference between the two groups, but XRCC3 sequence revealed statistically significant difference. The age was a risk factor for LVH. Conclusion: Osteoprotogrin and XRCC3 genes polymorphism mutations may be associated with left ventricular hypertrophy in hypertensive patients.

Amphetamine Versus Non Amphetamine-Related First Episode Psychosis in Saudi Arabian Patients

Background: Amphetamines are illicit psychostimulant drugs that can induce psychotic symptoms. Very few studies have been conducted in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (SA) on amphetamine abuse and related psychosis. Recently, the pattern of amphetamine abuse in SA showed a significant trend of increased frequency. Objectives: To investigate the extent of amphetamine abuse in a sample of Saudi patients hospitalized for first episode of acute psychosis. Also, to compare in that sample between amphetamine psychosis and other psychoses regarding demographic data, premorbid personality and symptoms profile. method: 106 patients with acute psychosis were hospitalized and screening of urine for amphetamine was conducted for all. Patients’ psychiatric evaluation included interviewing, and ICD-10 criteria for personality disorders. 30 healthy subjects were also included for comparison with patients. Results: 34/106 of psychotic patients (32%) were positive for amphetamine in urine (≥ 1000 ng/ml). The frequency of personality disorders was significantly higher (P mpared with healthy subjects (6/30;20%). Also, the incidence of personality disorders was significantly higher (P mphetamine positive psychosis (25/34;73.5%) compared with amphetamine negative psychosis (29/72;40%). Cluster B personality disorders particularly the antisocial and borderline were significantly higher in amphetamine positive psychosis (13/34;38%) compared with amphetamine negative psychoses (6/72;8%). The symptom profile showed significant difference between amphetamine positive and amphetamine negative psychosis as regards ideas of reference (50% vs. 14%), suspiciousness (44% vs. 11%), suicidal ideation (38% vs. 23%), paranoid delusions (29% vs. 17%) and increased pulse or blood pressure (29% vs. 7%) respectively. Performance Evaluation of Single Bed Desiccant Desorption Process

In the present study, dynamic performance of single bed desiccant regeneration system has been investigated experimentally. The desiccant bed operates as an adsorber and then as a regenerator, intermittently. In the experimental work of this investigation, Silica gel is used as a desiccant material. In the regeneration process, hot air from an air heater is blown through the bed using an air blower. The performance of desorption process at different conditions of flowing air is demonstrated. The experimental tests were carried out at different conditions of inlet air and initial bed parameters. Temperature and humidity of air at inlet and exit of the bed were measured. The obtained results showed that hot air with an inlet temperature ranging from 40°C to 75°C could release a notable amount of water from the desiccant bed. The relation between the studied parameters during the desorption processes is correlated. Results also show that the “Rehabilitation period” in desorption process should be eliminated to decrease the desorption time and it could be eliminated if the hot air mass flow rate is greater than 1.92 kg/hr per kg of silica gel.

maximizing Land Use Efficiency by Intercropping Cowpea with Some maize Cultivars under Different maize Planting Geometries

Adjustment of planting geometry along with suitable maize cultivar can be a viable tool for maximizing land usage and net return. A two-year study was carried out at Serw Agricultural Experiments and Research Station, A.R.C., Domiate governorate, Egypt, during 2015 and 2016 seasons to evaluate intercropping cowpea with suitable maize cultivar and its planting geometry for maximizing land usage and net return. The treatments were the combinations between three maize cultivars (SC 30K08, TWC 310 and TWC 352) and three maize plant distributions (one plant/hill distanced at 25, 50 and 75 cm between hills, respectively). Ridge width with maize plant distribution formed maize planting geometry (25 cm × 140 cm, 50 cm × 140 cm and 75 cm × 140 cm). These treatments were compared in a split plot distribution in randomized complete block design with three replications. maize cultivar SC 30K08 had the highest grain yield and its attributes compared with the other cultivars in both seasons. Also, maize planting geometry 25 cm × 140 cm resulted in the highest grain yield and its attributes compared with the other planting geometries in both seasons. Ear length, ear weight, 100-grain weight and grain yield/fad were affected significantly by maize cultivars × maize planting geometry. Intercropping cowpea with maize cultivar TWC 352 had the highest seed yield and its attributes compared with those intercropped with the other cultivars in both seasons. Also, maize planting geometry 75 cm × 140 cm resulted in the highest seed yield and its attributes through growing two cowpea rows between maize hills compared with the other maize planting geometries in both seasons. Number of pods/plant and seed yield/fad were affected significantly by maize cultivars × maize planting geometry. Genial tubercles: morphological study of the controversial anatomical landmark using cone beam computed tomography

BACKGROUND Identification of the morphology of the genial tubercles (GTs) is valuable for different dental applications. The morphological pattern of the GTs is still controversial, and therefore, the study of its morphology using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) plays a valuable role in resolving the controversy. AIm To assess the morphological pattern, dimensions and position of the GTs using CBCT among a selected Saudi population. mETHODS CBCT records of 155 Saudi subjects (49 female and 106 male) were used to assess the pattern and size of the GTs and to determine the distance from the apices of the lower central incisors to the superior border of the incisors (I-SGT) and the distance from the inferior border of the GTs to the menton (IGT-m). RESULTS The results of this study showed that the most common morphological pattern was of two superior GTs and a rough impression below them (36.8%), followed by two superior GTs and a median ridge representing fused inferior GTs below them (22.6%) and a single median eminence or projection (20%). The classically described pattern, of two superior and two inferior GTs placed one above the other, was found in only 14.2% of cases, while 6.4% of the studied cases had no GTs. The mean width and height were 6.23 ± 1.93 mm and 6.67 ± 3.04 mm, respectively, while the mean I-SGT and IGT-m measurements were 8.26 ± 2.7 mm and 8.13 ± 3.07 mm, respectively. CONCLUSION The GTs are a controversial anatomical landmark with wide variation in their morphological pattern. The most common pattern among the studied Saudi sample was of two superior GTs and a rough impression below them, and there were no significant differences between males and females.

Particle Size Distribution and Hydraulic Conductivity in Coastal Non-Agricultural Land in Gaza Coastal Plain

Background: Particle size distribution and hydraulic conductivity of coastal no-agricultural lands are not available. This study characterized the particle size distribution and hydraulic conductivity on coastal non-agricultural land along the coastal plain of Gaza. materials and methods: Six soil profiles were digged along the coastal plain in Gaza Strip and soil samples were collected from 0 - 150 cm depth. Four soil plots around each site were used to determine the hydraulic conductivity using Infiltrometer method. Four particle size groups were identified, group 1 (630 nm), group 2 (200 nm), group 3 (63 nm) and group 4 (20 nm). Results: Dominancy of particle size group 2 was noticed in all sites followed by group 3. Groups 1 and 4 were less dominant in all sites. Hydraulic conductivity ranged from lower value 0.27 in the control soil plot in Khan Younis (site 1) to the highest value 1.76 m/s in disturbed soil plot in Shakhejjlen (site 3) with regression coefficient (R2) range of 0.9725 - 0.997 indicating strong positive association. Conclusion: It can be concluded that the coastal non-agricultural land is sandy with various hydraulic conductivity values due to different particle size distribution. These data are useful to the scientific community around the world and will be helpful to speculate potential risk factors to life of ecosystem.

Urinary Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) as a Novel marker for Early Prediction of Esophageal Varices in Patients with Chronic Liver Disease

Background/Aims: Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) has a crucial role in portal hypertension and collateral vessels formation. This study aims to assess urinary VEGF in cirrhotic patients as a predictor of presence of esophageal varices, and variceal bleeding. Settings and Design: 42 cirrhotic patients were randomly selected and classified into 2 groups according to the presence of variceal bleeding. methods and material: Urinary VEGF was measured and corrected against urinary creatinine. Platelet count, liver functions, abdominal ultrasonography and upper endoscopy were done. Statistical Analysis Used: Comparison was done by mann Whitney and Kruskal Wallis tests. Correlation was done using Spearman rank correlation. multivariable logistic regression was done to identify predictors of variceal bleeding and presence of large varices. Receiver operator characteristic curve (ROC) analysis was used to determine the optimum cut off value of predictors. Results and Conclusions: Urinary VEGF was lower in cirrhotic patients with esophageal varices than those without. Low VEGF, low platelet count and splenomegaly were found to be independent predictors of both the presence of large esophageal varices, and variceal bleeding. Cut-off values for platelet count ≤ 166.3 × 103/μL, and corrected VEGF ≤ 59.12 pg/mg were predictive of large esophageal varices with 93.1%, 86.2% sensitivity and 74.5%, 58.2% specificity respectively. While variceal bleeding could be predicted at a platelet count ≤ 153 × 103/μL, and corrected VEGF ≤ 45.08 pg/mg with 90.9%, 81.8% sensitivity and 72.6%, 59.7% specificity respectively. The study concludes that urinary VEGF can be used as an alternative to upper endoscopic screening.

The study was sought to enhance the synthesis of thermal stableβ-cyclodextrin glycosyltransferase(β-CGTase)using potato wastewater as a low-cost medium and assess the degree to which it is efficient for industrial production ofβ-cyclodextrin(β-CD)from raw potato *** bacteria producingβ-CGTase was isolated from Saudi Arabia and the promising strain was identified as Bacillus licheniformis using phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA ***-encapsulated cultures exhibited twice-fold ofβ-CGTase production more than free *** electron microscopy(SEm)of polymeric capsules indicated the potential for a longer shelf-life,which promotes the restoration of activity in bacterial cells across semi-continuous fermentation ofβ-CGTase production for 252 *** optimal conditions forβ-CGTase synthesis using potato wastewater medium were at 36 h,pH of 8.0,and 50°C with 0.4%potato starch and 0.6%yeast extract as carbon and nitrogen sources,*** purified enzyme showed a specific activity of 63.90 U/mg with a molecular weight of∼84.6 kDa as determined by SDS-PAGE *** high enzyme activity was observed up to 60°C,and complete stability was achieved at 75°*** levels of activity and stability were shown at pH 8.0,and the pH range from 7.0–10.0,*** enzyme has an appreciable affinity for raw potato starch with a Km of 5.7×10−6 m and a Vmax of 87.71μmoL/mL/min.β-CD production was effective against 25 U/g of raw potato *** outcomes demonstrated its feasibility to develop a fermentation process by integrating the cost-effective production ofβ-CGTase having distinctive properties forβ-CD production with ecofriendly utilization of potato wastewater.
