Modelling the combined effect of surface roughness and topography on bacterial attachment

Bacterial attachment is a complex process affected by flow conditions,imparted stresses,and the surface properties and structure of both the supporting material and the *** on the initial attachment of cells of the bacterium Streptococcus gordonii(***),an important early coloniser of dental plaque,to samples of stainless steel(SS)have been reported in this *** primary aim motivating this study was to establish what affect,if any,the surface roughness and topology of samples of SS would have on the initial attachment of cells of the bacterium *** material and bacterium were chosen by virtue of their relevance to dental implants and dental implant *** to bacterial attachment,surfaces become conditioned by the interfacing environment(salivary pellicle from the oral cavity for instance).For this reason,cell attachment to samples of SS pre-coated with saliva was also *** implementing the Extended Derjaguin Landau Verwey and Overbeek(XDLVO)theory coupled with convection-diffusion-reaction equations and the surface roughness information,a computational model was developed to help better understand the physics of cell *** roughness was modelled by reconstructing the surface topography using statistical parameters derived from atomic force microscopy(AFM)*** this computational model,the effects of roughness and surface patterns on bacterial attachment were examined quantitatively in both static and flowing fluid *** results have shown that rougher surfaces(within the sub-microscale)generally increase bacterial attachment in static fluid conditions which quantitatively agrees with experimental *** flow conditions,computational fluid dynamics(CFD)simulations predicted reduced convection-diffusion inside the channel which would act to decrease bacterial *** combined with surface roughness effects,the computational model also predicted that the surface top

This paper presents a radio optical network simulation tool(RONST)for modeling optical-wireless *** a typical optical and electrical chain environment,performance should be optimized concurrently before system *** a result,simulating such systems turns out to be a multidisciplinary *** governing equations are incompatible with co-simulation in the traditional environments of existing software(SW)*** ultra-wideband(UWB)technology is an ideal candidate for providing high-speed short-range access for wireless *** limited wireless reach of this technology is a significant limitation.A feasible solution to the problem of extending UWB signals is to transmit these signals to endusers via optical *** concept implies the need for the establishment of a dependable environment for studying such ***,the essential novelty of the proposed SW is that it provides designers,engineers,and researchers with a dependable simulation framework that can accurately and efficiently predict and/or optimize the behavior of such systems in a single optical-electronic simulation ***,it is supported by a strong mathematical foundation with integrated algorithms to achieve broad flexibility and low computational *** validate the proposed tool,RONST was deployed on an ultra-wideband over fiber(UWBoF)*** bit error rate(BER)has been calculated over a UWBoF system,and there is good agreement between the experimental and simulated results.

New approaches for diagnosis of dry eye disease

We reviewed the literature for different diagnostic approaches for dry eye disease(DED) including the most recent advances, contradictions and promising diagnostic tools and technique. We performed a broad literature search for articles discussing different methods for diagnosis of DED including assessment of tear osmolarity, tear film stability, ocular biomarkers and others. Articles indexed in PubMed and google scholar were included. With the growing cosmetic industry, environmental pollution, and booming of digital screens, DED is becoming more prevalent. Its multifactorial etiology renders the diagnosis challenging and invites the emergence of new diagnostic tools and tests. Diagnostic tools can be classified, based on the parameter they measure, into tear film osmolarity, functional visual acuity, tear volume, tear turnover, tear film stability, tear film composition, ocular biomarkers and others. Although numerous methods exist, the most accurate diagnosis can be reached through combining the results of more than one test. Many reported tests have shown potential as diagnostic/screening tools, however, require more research to prove their diagnostic power, alone or in combination. Future research should focus on identifying and measuring parameters that are the most specific to DED diagnosis.

Synthetically engineered microbes reveal interesting principles of cooperation

Cooperation is ubiquitous in biological sys- tems. However, if natural selection favors traits that confer an advantage to one individual over another, then helping others would be paradoxical. Nevertheless, cooperation persists and is critical in maintaining homeostasis in systems ranging from populations of bacteria to groupings of mammals. Developing an understanding of the dynamics and mechanisms by which cooperation operates is critical in understanding ecological and evolutionary relationships. Over the past decade, synthetic biology has emerged as a powerful tool to study social dynamics. By engineering rationally controlled and modulatable beha- vior into microbes, we have increased our overall under- standing of how cooperation enhances, or conversely constrains, populations. Furthermore, it has increased our understanding of how cooperation is maintained within populations, which may provide a useful framework to influence populations by altering cooperation. As many bacterial pathogens require cooperation to infect the host and survive, the principles developed using synthetic biology offer promise of developing novel tools and strategies to treat infections, which may reduce the use of antimicrobial agents. Overall, the use of engineered cooperative microbes has allowed the field to verify existing, and develop novel, theories that may govern cooperative behaviors at all levels of biology.

Layered Birnessite Cathode with a Displacement/Intercalation Mechanism for High-Performance Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries

Mn-based rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries(ZIBs)are highly promising because of their high operating voltages,attractive energy densities,and ***,the electrochemical performances of Mn-based cathodes usually suffer from their serious structure transformation upon charge/discharge ***,we report a layered sodium-ion/crystal water co-intercalated Birnessite cathode with the formula of Na0.55Mn2O4·0.57H2O(NMOH)for high-performance aqueous ZIBs.A displacement/intercalation electrochemical mechanism was confirmed in the Mn-based cathode for the first ***+and crystal water enlarge the interlayer distance to enhance the insertion of Zn^2+,and some sodium ions are replaced with Zn^2+ in the first cycle to further stabilize the layered structure for subsequent reversible Zn^2+/H^+ insertion/extraction,resulting in exceptional specific capacities and satisfactory structural ***,a pseudo-capacitance derived from the surface-adsorbed Na^+ also contributes to the electrochemical *** NMOH cathode not only delivers high reversible capacities of 389.8 and 87.1 mA h g^−1 at current densities of 200 and 1500 mA g^−1,respectively,but also maintains a good long-cycling performance of 201.6 mA h g^−1 at a high current density of 500 mA g^−1 after 400 cycles,which makes the NMOH cathode competitive for practical applications.

Liposome co-encapsulation of anti-cancer agents for pharmacological optimization of nanomedicine-based combination chemotherapy

Aim:Co-encapsulation of anti-cancer agents in pegylated liposomes may provide an effective tool to maximize efficacy of combined drug therapy by taking advantage of the long circulation time,passive targeting,and reduced toxicity of liposome ***:We have developed several liposome formulations of co-encapsulated drugs using various permutations of three active agents:doxorubicin(Dox),mitomycin-C lipidic prodrug(MLP),and alendronate(Ald).Dox and MLP are available in single drug liposomal formulations:pegylated liposomal Dox(PLD,Doxil®),clinically approved,and pegylated liposomal MLP(PL-MLP,Promitil®),in phase 1-2 clinical *** have previously shown that co-encapsulation of Dox and Ald in pegylated liposomes(PLAD)results in a formulation with valuable immuno-pharmacologic properties and superior antitumor properties over PLD in immunocompetent animal *** on the PLAD and PL-MLP platforms,we developed a new pegylated liposomal formulation of co-entrapped Dox and MLP(PLAD-MLP),with the former localized in the liposome water phase via remote loading with an ammonium alendronate and the latter passively loaded into the liposome lipid *** alternative formulation of co-entrapped MLP and Dox in which ammonium Ald was replaced with ammonium sulfate(PLD-MLP)was also tested for comparative ***: PLAD-MLP displays high loading efficiency of Dox and MLP nearing 100%, and a mean vesicle diameter of 110 nm. Cryo-transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) of PLAD-MLP reveals round vesicles with an intra-vesicle Dox-alendronate precipitate. PLAD-MLP was tested in an in vitro MLP activation assay with the reducing agent dithiothreitol and found to be significantly less susceptible to thiolytic activation than PL-MLP. Alongside thiolytic activation of MLP, a significant fraction of encapsulated Dox was released from liposomes.
