IL28B polymorphism and cytomegalovirus predict response to treatment in Egyptian HCV type 4 patients

AIM:To test whether the status of positive cytomegalovirus(CMV) DNA detection adds to the predictive value of IL28B and to further categorize C/T allele ***:This study included 166 chronic hepatitis C(CHC) patients who received combined interferon and ribavirin therapy for 48 wk,84 spontaneous hepatitis C virus(HCV) resolvers who were positive for IgG anti-HCV antibody and negative for HCV RNA,and 100 healthy subjects who were negative for both HCV antibodies and RNA as *** DNA from peripheral blood was used for IL28B rs.12979860 single nucleotide polymorphism(SNP) and CMV DNA detection.A 139 bp fragment containing IL28B SNP was amplified in all subjects by polymerase chain reaction using a specifically designed *** the IL28B rs.12979860 SNP was detected by restriction fragment length polymorphism(RFLP) *** presence of CMV DNA was tested by amplification of the gB1 gene using nested polymerase chain *** role of CMV and IL28B rs.12979860 SNP genotypes in determining the response rate to combined interferon therapy and clinical status of patients were statistically ***:Current data showed that 67% of patients carrying the IL28B 12979860 C/C allele had a sustained viral response(SVR) while the genotypes C/T and TT were associated with lower SVR rates,50% and 48%,*** rates for the C/C allele were lower than other HCV genotypes and/or other *** CC was associated with the response to interferon(P = 0.025).Genotype C/C was reduced from 48% in controls to 14% in CHC patients suggesting its protective role against progression to *** majority of spontaneously cleared subjects(86%) were C/C,confirming its protective *** C/T allele was present in 71% of CHC patients compared with 38% of controls,so the use of IL28B SNP genotyping only in these patients may be of little value as a predictor of *** reactivation occurred in 40% of CHC ***-infection with

Physico-Chemical Properties of Compost Based Waste-Recycling of Grape Fruit as Nursery Growing Medium

The present study reports the physico-chemical properties of four compost based squeezed grape fruit wastes (SGFW) consisting of 60% SGFW + 40% chicken manure (including sawdust) (CMS) (v/v), 80% SGFW + 20% bean hay (BH) (v/v), 80% SGFW + 20% chicken manure (including wheat hay) (CMH) (v/v) and 100% SGFW. Results showed that 100% SGFW compost had a suitable pH and EC with 7.82 and 1.68 dSm-1, respectively. Also, 80% SGFW + 20% BH compost was very rich in organic matter similar to coco peat, but 80%SGFW + 20% CMH compost had the lowest C/N ratio (5.2). The N, P and K concentrations in SGFW composts were higher than the coco peat or vermiculite. The soluble cations (Ca2+, Mg2+, K+) and anions (CO23, HCO-3 ) in 60% SGFW+ 40% CMS compost were the highest among substrates. The concentrations of trace elements and heavy metals in SGFW composts were far lower than the range of phytotoxicity. On the other hand, total phenols in SGFW composts were higher than coco peat.

Structure and Properties of Sn-9Zn Lead-Free Solder Alloy with Heat Treatment

The Sn-9Zn lead-free solder alloy was prepared by conventional casting technique then cold-rolled into long sheets of 1 mm thickness and 3 mm width. It was annealed at 80, 120 and 160°C for 60 min to investigate the effect of isochronal heat treatment on structure and mechanical properties of the cold rolled Sn-9Zn alloy. The results showed that, the crystallite size and lattice strain have opposite behavior with increasing annealing temperature due to recovery and recrystalization processes associated with the heat treatment process. Vickers micro-hardness number increases continuously from 155 to 180 MPa with increasing annealing temperature. Ultimate tensile strength (UTS) was also calculated. It was found that, it is equal to 61.4 MPa for the non annealed sample and slightly decreases to 60.5 and 58.2 MPa for samples annealed at 80 and 120°C, respectively. While, increases to 65.4 MPa for the sample annealed at 160°C. Also, ductility increases with increasing annealing temperature in opposite manor with the UTS. The new method for Micro-creep behavior as well as the creep rate calculated by this method has been characterized at room temperature.

Shielding Properties of Lead Zinc Borate Glasses

In the present work, ZnO·PbO·B2O3 glasses are prepared to be used as g-ray shielding materials. The attenuation properties of these glasses with different concentrations of PbO (20% - 70%) have been investigated at photon energies 662, 1173, 1332 and 2614 keV. The optical absorption spectra of some glass samples have been measured from 200 to 1100 nm before and after g-ray irradiation. The analyses of these spectra have been interpreted and discussed.

A Prospective Study of the Effect of Different Palliative Radiotherapy Fractionation Schedules on Tumor Response and Toxicity in Advanced Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) Patients

Background: The optimal dose of palliative radiotherapy (RT) in symptomatic advanced lung cancer is unclear. Patients and methods: Patients with advanced NSCLC who were indicated for thoracic palliative RT with age up to 65 y and Performance Status (PS) 0 - 2 and no significant cardiac or lung co-morbidities were randomized into two fractionation arms: arm A: 30 Gy/10 over 2 weeks and arm B: 27 Gy/6 over 3 weeks (2 fractions per week) using 2 anterior posterior (AP-PA) fields in both arms. Primary end points were symptomatic and radiological tumor response, respiratory functions assessment. Secondary end point was toxicity. Results: From December 2014 to October 2015, 40 patients were randomized, 20 patients in each arm. There was statistically insignificant higher symptomatic improvement in arm B. Four weeks after treatment, 12 out of 40 patients (30%), 6 patients in each arm, had radiological Partial Response (PR) of the primary thoracic lesion without significant difference between the two arms. There was a tendency for improvement in the post treatment mean Forced Vital Capacity (FVC) and Forced Expiratory Volume in one second (FEV1) in each arm without statistical significance. There were no reported skin reactions or esophagitis in both arms up to 4 weeks after treatment. eleven out of the 40 patients (27.5%), 6 in arm B and 5 in arm A, had radiological signs of radiation pneumonitis without significant difference between both arms. Conclusion: The two RT fractionation schedules showed equal efficacy in terms of symptoms relief, radiological response of the primary thoracic tumor, respiratory functions and toxicity. Thus the 27 Gy/6 fractionation arm appears preferable compared to 30 Gy/10 arm to minimize the patients’ visits and load on the machines.

Non-Linear Analysis of Vibrations of Non-Linear System Subjected to Multi-Excitation Forces via a Non-Linear Absorber

The dynamic response of mechanical and civil structures subjected to high-amplitude vibration is often dangerous and undesirable. Sometimes controlled vibration is desirable as in the machinery used in the formation of rigid hard material as Ceramics and diamond. This process is done via the passive control methods. The main purpose of this paper is to how reduction of vibration of nonlinear system subjected to multi-excitation forces via a nonlinear absorber. The nonlinear differential equations describing the model, which describe ultrasonic cutting machine are solved by using perturbation method. The effects of different parameter on the response of the system are studied. The stability of the numerical solution is investigated by using frequency response equations and phase-plane method. The simulation results are achieved using Matlab and Maple programs. A comparison is made with the available published work.

Analysis and Design of UHF Bow-Tie RFID Tag Antenna Input Impedance

In this paper two proposed methods of input impedance calculation for Bow-Tie antenna are introduced. The proposed methods show input impedance calculation with high accuracy. Also, design curves for input impedance values were developed depending on the geometry of antenna. The proposed design curves are used to design a Bow-Tie type RFID tag antenna. The input impedance of the tag antenna is calculated using proposed methods and compared with that obtained using CST studio suite 2014 and IE3D Zeland version 12.0 software packages. The results are investigated and discussed. The tag antenna is fabricated, measured and the obtained input impedance is compared with the simulation and the proposed methods. Good agreement among measured input impedance and that simulated by CST, IE3D or proposed methods is obtained.

Postoperative Mechanical Axis Alignment and Components Position after Conventional and Patient-Specific Total Knee Arthroplasty

Introduction: Accurate postoperative alignment and implant positioning are determinant factors for successful total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Patient-specific template (PST) is a technique that uses computer technology for the planning, deigning and production of cutting guides. This study aims to compare PST to conventional technique in terms of mechanical axis alignment and component positioning. Patients and method: 109 TKA were performed for 78 patients in 2 groups. Group A included 69 conventional TKA in 55 patients and Group B included 40 patient-specific TKA in 23 patient. Postoperative long-film X-rays were done for all patients to observe the mechanical axis, anatomical axis, lateral distal femoral mechanical angle and medial proximal tibial angle. Results: No statistically significant difference was found between the two groups regarding alignment or component positioning. Conclusion: Both techniques have shown similar results in restoring the mechanical axis and alignment after TKA. However, PST had the advantages of reduced blood loss and shorter operative time.

Influence of Paint on Steel Corrosion for Marine Applications

The majority of naval ships are constructed of mild steel. Corrosion is a major concern in a maritime environment. This particular type of material degradation has recently received more attention by the marine industry. The present work aims to investigate the effect of recent coatings used in marine ship surfaces for preventing corrosion. Experiments were performed according to standard tests to evaluate and measure the coating adhesion to steel and to measure the corrosion wear rate if any for three types of coatings. An accelerated corrosion test was conducted to duplicate in the laboratory the field corrosion performance of a product. The results indicate that all tested types of paint have resulted in a reduction in the corrosion rate compared with the uncoated steel. A minimum corrosion rate of 0.8 mm/year for the coat “Hempadur 52,140” was obtained compared to 2.1 mm/year for the uncoated steel. A microscopic examination of the corroded steel surfaces was conducted which prevailed pitting behavior with different degree. The minimum corroded surface exhibited few pitting attack in comparison to other specimens. Although the pitting attack of the surface layer (paint), one can drive a conclusion that sample surface without coating is aggressively attacked by pits.
