AIM:To compare the prognostic ability of inflammation scores for patients with hepatitis B virus(HBV)-related hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)undergoing transarterial chemoembolization(TACE).METHODS:Data of 224 consecutive patients who underwent TACE for unresectable HBV-related HCC from September 2009 to November 2011 were retrieved from a prospective *** association of inflammation scores with clinicopathologic variables and overall survival(OS)were analyzed,and receiver operating characteristic curves were generated,and the area under the curve(AUC)was calculated to evaluate the discriminatory ability of each inflammation score and staging system,including tumor-node-metastasis,Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer,and Cancer of the Liver Italian Program(CLIP)***:The median follow-up period was 390 d,the one-,two-,and three-year OS were 38.4%,18.3%,and 11.1%,respectively,and the median OS was *** Glasgow Prognostic Score(GPS),modifed GPS,neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio,and Prognostic Index were associated with *** GPS consistently had a higher AUC value at 6 mo(0.702),12 mo(0.676),and24 mo(0.687)in comparison with other inflammation *** consistently had a higher AUC value at6 mo(0.656),12 mo(0.711),and 24 mo(0.721)in comparison with tumor-node-metastasis and Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer staging *** analysis revealed that alanine aminotransferase,GPS,and CLIP were independent prognostic factors for *** combination of GPS and CLIP(AUC=0.777)was superior to CLIP or GPS alone in prognostic ability for ***:The prognostic ability of GPS is superior to other inflammation scores for HCC patients undergoing *** GPS and CLIP improved the prognostic power for OS.

A new type of photographic spectral sensitizer containing silicon-carbon double. bond is reported. The application tests show that the dye has excellent sensitivity in silver iodobromide emulsion and that the sensitivity maximum (S-max) of emulsion sensitized by the dye gives a hypsochromic shift about 70nm as compared with the absorption maximum (lambda (max)) of the dye in methanol. This phenomenon differs entirely from typical photographic spectral sensitizing dye.

Background: Laparoscopic hepatectomy for hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) located in segment Ⅵ, Ⅶ, or Ⅷ of the liver is usually difficult because of poor operative exposure, due to the unique anatomical structure. In this study, we evaluated the practice of laparoscopic hepatectomy with the left jackknife position for patients with HCC located in segment Ⅵ, Ⅶ, or Ⅷ.Methods: A total of 10 patients were enrolled to undergo laparoscopic hepatectomy with the left jackknife *** located in segment Ⅵ, Ⅶ, or Ⅷ were assessed by preoperative dynamic computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging. Operation time, intraoperative blood loss, postoperative fasting time, postoperative drainage time, major postoperative complications, and duration of postoperative hospital stay were ***: All surgeries were successfully completed. Introduction:Most hepatocellular carcinomas(HCC) develop in a background of underlying liver disease including chronic hepatitis ***,the effect of antiviral therapy on the long-term outcome of patients with hepatitis B virus(HBV)-related HCC treated with chemoembolization is *** study aimed to evaluate the survival benefits of anti-HBV therapy after chemoembolization for patients with HBV-related ***:A total of 224 HCC patients who successfully underwent chemoembolization were identified,and their survival and other relevant clinical data were ***-Meier and Cox regression analyses were performed to validate possible effects of antiviral treatment on overall survival(OS).Results:The median survival time(MST) was 15.9(95%confidence interval[CI],9.5-27.7) months in the antiviral group and 9.6(95%CI,7.8-13.7) months in the non-antiviral group(log-rank test,P = 0.044).Cox multivariate analysis revealed that antiviral treatment was a prognostic factor for OS(P = 0.008).Additionally,a further analysis was based on the stratification of the TNM tumor *** the subgroup of early stages,MST was significantly longer in the antiviral-treatment group than in the non-antiviral group(61.8 months[95%CI,34.8 months to beyond the follow-up period]versus 26.2[95%CI,14.5-37.7]months,P= 0.012).Multivariate analysis identified antiviral treatment as a prognostic factor for OS in the early-stage subgroup(P = 0.006).However,in the subgroup of advanced stages,MST of the antiviral-treated group was comparable to that of the non-antiviral group(8.4[95%CI,5.2-13.5]months versus 7.4[95%CI,5.9-9.3]months,P = 0.219).Multivariate analysis did not indicate that antiviral treatment was a significant prognostic factor in this ***:Antiviral treatment is associated with prolonged OS time after chemoembolization for HCC,especially in patients with early-stage tumors.

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA), one of the most advanced loco-regional ablative therapeutic methods, is widely utilized in the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Because of its minimal invasiveness and high efficacy, RFA has been regarded as a curative therapy as alternative to surgical resection and liver transplantation. It brings new hope and a new treatment pattern for small HCC. In this article, we summarize the important role of RFA in the treatment of small HCC according to our clinical experience over six years. The prognosis of small HCC after RFA is comparable to that of surgical resection but with higher safety, less complications, wider applicability, and good long-term survival. RFA will play a more and more important role in the clinical treatment of small HCC.
