Psychological Experience of Mothers of Children with Sickle Cell Disease Followed at the Pediatric Department of Bouaké University Teaching Hospital

Introduction: Sickle cell disease has physical and emotional repercussions on the child and his family. The aim of this study was to describe the psychosocial experiences of mothers of children with sickle cell disease in order to improve the overall care of the child. Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study carried out in the pediatrics department of Bouaké University Teaching Hospital from June to September 2023. It focused on mothers of major sickle-cell-affected children followed up in the pediatrics department of the Bouaké University Teaching Hospital. The variables studied were sociodemographic, psychological, social and economic. Results: Of the 40 mothers surveyed, 15% were not in school and 32.5% were unemployed. For them, sickle cell disease was of natural (genetic) origin in 90% and supernatural in 10%. They stated that the child had an average age of 36 months (extremes 7 and 108 months) when the disease was discovered. And 52% of them were satisfied with the way the disease was clearly and completely announced. Following the announcement, the questioned mothers said they had felt shock (35%), sadness (31.7%), guilt (23.3%) and discouragement (10%). Anxiety and depression were experienced by 77.5% and 22.5% respectively. In 60% of cases, they stated that the disease was incurable, and the outcome was fatal in 2.5% of cases. The child’s illness was a source of problems in the home in 25% of cases, represented by arguments in 92% and divorce in 8%. In 97.5% of cases, the mother told her family and friends about the child’s illness. In 90% of cases, the mother and child benefited from psychological support from family and friends. Conclusion: Sickle cell disease is a serious illness with a psychological and social impact on mothers. We recommend psychological support for mothers from the moment of diagnosis and throughout follow-up.

Brain Stroke as a Post-Operative Lethal Complication of a Bilateral Chronic Subdural Hematoma: A Case Report

Chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) is a common neurosurgical condition that is frequently encountered in neurosurgery practice. Its etiologies are dominated by traumatic head injury, and clinical presentations are various. The prognosis is generally good, but complications can be seen. Some of these complications can lead to the death of the patient. We report the rare case of a 70-year-old man admitted to the emergency room for the management of bilateral CSDH revealed by severe headache, vomiting, and loss of consciousness. He underwent a successful evacuation of both hematomas but had a stroke in both posterior cerebral artery territories, which was lethal 72 hours after surgery. We present and try to find an explanation for this exceptional post-operative complication of CSDH.

Deriving Temporal and Vertical Distributions of Methane in Xianghe Using Ground-based Fourier Transform Infrared and Gas-analyzer Measurements

Methane(CH4)is one of the most important greenhouse gases in the atmosphere,making it worthwhile to study its temporal and vertical distributions in source areas,e.g.,North *** this purpose,a ground-based high-resolution Fourier transform infrared spectrometer(FTIR),the Bruker IFS 125 HR,along with an in-situ instrument,the Picarro G2301,were deployed in Xianghe County(39.8°N,117.0°E),Hebei Province,*** have been recorded since *** the FTIR measurements,we used two observation modes to retrieve the mole fraction of CH4:the Total Carbon Column Observing Network(TCCON)method(retrieval algorithm:GGG2014),and the Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change(NDACC)method(retrieval algorithm:SFIT4).Combining FTIR with in-situ measurements,we found the temporal and vertical distributions of atmospheric CH4 within three vertical layers(near the ground,in the troposphere,and in the stratosphere),and throughout the whole *** the diurnal variation of CH4 near the ground,the concentration at night was higher than during the *** the seasonal variation,CH4 was low in spring and high in summer,for all three vertical *** addition,there was a peak of CH4 in winter near the ground,both in the troposphere and the whole *** found that variation of CH4 in the tropospheric column was close to that of the in-situ measurements near the ***,the variations of CH4 in the stratospheric column could be influenced by vertical motions,since it was higher in summer and lower in winter.

Identifying timing and risk factors for early recurrence of resectable rectal cancer: A single center retrospective study

Translated Illustration and the Indigenization of christianity in Late Qing Chinese christian Novels

＂Intersemiotic translation＂ is categorized by Roman Jakobson as one of three types of translation. Translation of illustrations in the late Qing novels, either directly from verbal signs or visual signs, can also be regarded as a typical kind of ＂intersemiotic translation.＂ The present article studies illustrations in Chinese christian literature in the late Qing period, especially those in the Chinese translations of John Bunyan＇s works, The Pilgrim＇s Progress and The Holy War. Questions to ponder are how inter-semiotic translation occurs between these illustrations--in either transferring or transplanting the meanings from one sign system to another--and how it establishes its legitimacy through religious negotiation, ideological conflict, and cultural integration. The illustrations in the Chinese translation versions of The Pilgrim ＂s Progress manifest the translators＇ and illustrators＇ manipulation of repertoires of Chinese religious signs, thereby indigenizing a foreign religion. These illustrations, nevertheless, are not only associated with christianity, but also with the long-lasting visual signs of Chinese culture. Hence these translated illustrations could be considered as a type of ＂Translated christianity.＂

The Power of Persuasion in Propaganda： The Taiping Three Characters Classic

Taiping leaders were adept at using material from traditional Chinese sources and Western Protestant writings. The Taiping Three Character Classic, or Sanzijing （SZJ） exemplifies the Taipings＇ skillful adaptation of a pre-existing popular text in order to propagate its religious doctrine and political ideology. The traditional SZJfeatured an appealing style and imparted Neo-Confucian values to readers. The style of traditional SZJ contained a unique pattern that was kept in latter adaptations, while the text＇s content was modified to suit new realities. The Taiping SZJfollowed the structure of the traditional SZJ, but it provided its own historical ideas and utopian visions, which differed from christian Millennialism. The Taiping utopian vision was not about the future, but about a return to the period of the ＂the three dynasties＂ in Chinese history, an approach also used by Confucian intellectuals. The persuasive power in Taiping propaganda text lies in Taiping＇s exploitation of Chinese and Western resources, especially in utilizing existing concepts, popular texts and cultural patterns.

Case Report:Breast metastasis from small cell lung carcinoma

Breast metastases from extramammary neoplasms are very rare. We presented a 66 year-old female with metastasis of small cell lung carcinoma to the breast. She presented with consolidation over the left upper lobe of her lung undetermined after endobronchial or video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) biopsy,and this was treated effectively after antibiotic therapy at initial stage. The left breast lumps were noted 4 months later,and she underwent a modified radical mastectomy under the im-pression of primary breast carcinoma. However,the subsequent chest imaging revealed re-growing mass over the left mediastinum and hilum,and cells with the same morphological and staining features were found from specimens of transbronchial brushing and biopsy. An accurate diagnosis to distinguish a primary breast carcinoma from metastatic one is very important because the therapeutic planning and the outcome between them are different.
