Role of depressive symptoms in cardiometabolic diseases and subsequent transitions to all-cause mortality:an application of multistate models in a prospective cohort study

Background and purpose The role of depression in the development and outcome of cardiometabolic diseases remains to be clarified.We aimed to examine the extent to which depressive symptoms affect the transitions from healthy to diabetes,stroke,heart disease and subsequent all-cause mortality in a middle-aged and elderly European population.Methods A total of 78212 individuals aged≥50 years from the Survey of Health Ageing and Retirement in Europe were included.Participants with any baseline cardiometabolic diseases including diabetes,stroke and heart disease were excluded.Depressive symptoms were measured by the Euro-Depression scale at baseline.Participants were followed up to determine the occurrence of cardiometabolic diseases and all-cause mortality.We used multistate models to estimate the transition-specific HRs and 95%CIs after adjustment of confounders.Results During 500711 person-years of follow-up,4742 participants developed diabetes,2173 had stroke,5487 developed heart disease and 7182 died.Depressive symptoms were significantly associated with transitions from healthy to diabetes(HR:1.12,95%CI:1.05 to 1.20),stroke(HR:1.31,95%CI:1.18 to 1.44),heart disease(HR:1.26,95%CI:1.18 to 1.34)and all-cause mortality(HR:1.41,95%CI:1.34 to 1.49).After cardiometabolic diseases,depressive symptoms were associated with the increased risk of all-cause mortality in patients with diabetes(HR:1.54,95%CI:1.25 to 1.89),patients who had stroke(HR:1.29,95%CI:1.03 to 1.61)and patients with heart disease(HR:1.21,95%CI:1.02 to 1.44).Conclusions Depressive symptoms increase the risk of diabetes,stroke and heart disease,and affect the risk of mortality after the onset of these cardiometabolic conditions.Screening and treatment of depressive symptoms may have profound implications for the prevention and prognosis of cardiometabolic diseases.

Dynamic traveling time forecasting based on spatial-temporal graph convolutional networks

1 Introduction Traveling time forecasting,the core component in GPS navigation systems and taxi-hailing apps,has attracted widespread attention.Existing research mostly focuses on independent points like traffic flow prediction[1,2]or route planning[3,4],which ignore globality and lack satisfactory dynamic progress to adopt sophisticated traffic conditions.To facilitate this line of research,we propose a novel Dynamic Traveling Time forecasting framework based on the Spatial and Temporal Graph convolution(DTT-STG)integrated with map-matching,road speed forecasting,and route planning with full consideration of the dynamic spatial and temporal dependency.DTT-STG designs an angle-based map-matching algorithm to describe the direction of vehicles and explores a self-adaptive adjacency matrix combined with diffusion convolution and attention mechanisms to capture the dynamically changing spatial-temporal dependencies.Afterward,the progressive method is exploited to calculate the traveling time and plan the shortest route dynamically in continuously changing traffic states.

Within the hazard and disaster risk research field, explicitly treating carbon emissions as a hazard remains rather nascent. Applying hazard and disaster risk research perspectives to seek new insights on integrated mitigation and adaptation approaches and policy measures is equally elusive. Since China’s pledge to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, the ‘‘dual carbon” goals of carbon emission peaking and neutrality have stimulated nationwide attention, research, and policies and action plans.How to ensure that the transition pathways are on track and well-contextualized is one of the crucial challenges for policymakers and practitioners. This article examines the‘‘risks” of missing the carbon neutrality goal at a regional scale in China, denoted as Carbon Emission Risk(CER).Carbon emissions(CE) as hazard, combined with the human socioeconomic system as exposure and human living environment, constitute the regional carbon emission environmental risk system. The ‘‘risks” of missing(or achieving) the carbon neutrality target for any region at any time, the article argues, is essentially determined by the ratio of CE to carbon absorption(CA, for uptake and removal). These variables are modified by a broadly defined ‘‘vulnerability coefficient”(Cv) that embodies both the potential for changes(decreasing CE and increasing CA), and the uncertainties of measuring CE and CA. Thus,the ratio of CE to CA is a measure of reality at any moment of time, whereas Cv indicates the overall propensity or capacity for moving the CE/CA ratio towards 1, that is,realizing carbon neutrality. Based on our calculation, CER at the provincial level in eastern China is higher than in western China. The article also calls for strengthening CER research and summarizes key measures for carbon emission risk governance.

A facile ionic liquid approach to prepare cellulose fiber with good mechanical properties directly from corn stalks

It is very difficult to directly spin the lignocellulose without pretreatment.Ionic liquids(ILs)are promising solvent to dissolve lignocellulose to prepare cellulose fiber.However,the degree of cellulose polymerization(DP)is reduced when lignocellulose is dissolved in ILs,and the lignin removal rate is low.The elongation at break and tensile strength of the fibers obtained by spinning the lignocellulose dissolved in ILs are poor.In this paper,preparing cellulose fiber directly from lignocellulose based on dissolving corn stalk via[C4mim]Cl-L-arginine binary system is achieved.It shows that the removal rate of lignin can reach 92.35%and the purity of cellulose can reach 85.32%after corn stalk was dissolved at 150℃C for 11.5 h when the mass fraction of arginine is 2.5%.The elongation at break of fiber reached 10.12%and the tensile strength reached 420 MPa.It is mainly due to the fact that L-arginine not only inhibits the degradation of cellulose but also promotes the delignination.Without any pulping or pretreatment,preparing cellulose fibers via direct dissolution and extrusion may provide a simple and effective way to prepare many novel cellulose materials.

Factors contributing to the oxygen concentration over the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and its contribution rate calculation

A decline in atmospheric oxygen concentration is projected in the 21st century given the background of global warming.The Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau is located at a high altitude,and thus,it faces a hypoxia challenge;however,knowledge of the factors contributing to its atmospheric oxygen concentration is still lacking.Here,we conducted joint observations of ecosystem oxygen production and carbon sinks and near-surface atmospheric oxygen concentrations on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and meteorological elements at Beijing Fangshan Station.Using seasonal differences and statistical methods,we calculated the relative contribution rates of vegetation to changes in atmospheric oxygen concentration.Our results indicate that solar radiation,atmospheric humidity,and ecosystem oxygen consumption and production have a significant impact on the atmospheric oxygen concentration,and the impact shows temporal and spatial differences.Vegetation significantly impacts the oxygen concentration,with a contribution rate of 16.7%–24.5%,which is underestimated in existing research.Our findings provide important insights into the factors that influence atmospheric oxygen concentration and highlight the contribution of vegetation.To better understand the oxygen dynamics of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau,we recommend further field observations of soil respiration and vegetation photosynthesis to clarify the contributions of carbon storage,carbon sinks and other factors to the near-surface atmospheric oxygen concentration.

The Naxi of Northwest Yunnan,China use medicinal plants to treat skin conditions related to traditional lifestyles in extreme environments.However,modernization endangers both the medicinal plants used to treat skin conditions and traditional knowledge.Therefore,investigation and documentation of the medicinal plants used and associated traditional knowledge is necessary.In this study,we conducted an ethnobotanical survey in 12 Naxi communities in Northwest Yunnan.For this purpose,we used semistructured surveys to interview 840 informants from Naxi communities.We used informant consensus factor and use frequency as quantitative indices to evaluate the importance of medicinal plant species.A total of 161 medicinal plant species belonging to 69 families were documented.The highest informant consensus factor(ICF)values were recorded for skin nourishing(ICF?0.849),frostbite and chapped skin(ICF?0.833).These skin treatments are highly related to the environment and lifestyle of Naxi communities.The main active compounds of plants used to treat skin conditions in Naxi communities are known to have skin-treating properties.This study reveals that the skin conditions treated by the Naxi are associated with traditional medicine culture and social economic development.In addition,this study uses ethnobotanical indices to explain how skin condition treatments are linked to the natural environment of Naxi communities.

Explosion limits estimation and process optimization of direct propylene epoxidation with H2 and O2

Direct propylene epoxidation with H2 and O2,an attractive process to produce propylene oxide(PO),has a potential explosion danger due to the coexistence of flammable gases(i.e.,C3 H6 and H2)and oxidizer(i.e.,O2).The unknown explosion limits of the multi-component feed gas mixture make it difficult to optimize the reaction process under safe operation conditions.In this work,a distribution method is proposed and verified to be effective by comparing estimated and experimental explosion limits of more than 200 kinds of flammable gas mixture.Then,it is employed to estimate the explosion limits of the feed gas mixture,some results of which are also validated by the classic Le Chatelier’s Rule and flammable resistance method.Based on the estimated explosion limits,process optimization is carried out using commercially high and inherently safe reactant concentrations to enhance reaction performance.The promising results are directly obtained through the interface called gOPT in gPROMS only by using a simple,easy-constructed and mature packed-bed reactor,such as the PO yield of 13.3%,PO selectivity of 85.1%and outlet PO fraction of 1.8%.These results can be rationalized by indepth analyses and discussion about the effects of the decision variables on the operation safety and reaction performance.The insights revealed here could shed new light on the process development of the PO production based on the estimation of the explosion limits of the multi-component feed gas mixture containing flammable gase s,inert gas and O2,followed by process optimization.

为明晰草地资源生态补偿领域的研究脉络与热点动态,本文基于WOS(Web of Science,科学网)和CNKI(中国知网)数据,使用CiteSpace文献计量软件,分析国内外草地生态补偿研究的国家分布、国际热点及国内核心作者分布、机构分布、热点变化。结果表明:1)美国是该领域发文量第一的国家,中国次之,两国国际合作影响力较高;2)国际研究主要涵盖补偿政策设计、受偿意愿影响因素、补偿标准估算、政策成效等方面;3)国内研究重点突出,未形成稳固的核心作者网络;4)国内研究先后经历理论探索、政策实践和政策完善等阶段;5)除国际普遍关注的热点外,国内还结合我国牧区的具体情况进行研究。本文成果有助于全面了解我国牧区草地资源生态补偿领域的发展特征、学科前沿,并为未来该领域的深入研究提供参考。

Morphological and phylogenetical analysis reveals that a new tapeworm species (Cestoda: Hymenolepididae) from whooper swan belongs to Cloacotaenia not Hymenolepis

During a helminthological study of waterfowl in China,a new species(Cloacotaenia cygnimorbus sp.nov.)of hymenolepidid cestodes(tapeworm)was found in the small intestine of whooper swan(Cygnus cygnus,Linnaeus,1758).The rudimentary rostellum and four unarmed muscular suckers,proglottids with distinct craspedote and three spherical testes were coincident with the characters of Cloacotaenia or Hymenolepis,but phylogenetic analysis of 28S rRNA and cox1 gene revealed that the new species is Cloacotaenia rather than Hymenolepis.Its morphology was also clearly diff erentiated from C.megalops in the arrangement of its testes in a triangle instead of in line and the cirrus unarmed rather than spined.Compared with C.megalops,the new species has more elongated neck,much larger mature proglottids and much smaller testes,cirrus sac,ovary,vitellarium and uterine proglottid.In addition,it infected the host intestine not the cloacae.Phylogenetic analysis of cox1 gene of the new species shows that it had a level of sequence variation(10.52–23.06%)with the sequences of C.megalops.The considerable morphological and molecular diff erences between those two parasites support C.cygnimorbus sp.***.as a new species.
