Background Individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM)are more vulnerable to social disconnection compared with the general population;however,there are few relevant studies investigating this *** To investigate whether social isolation or loneliness may be associated with subsequent risk of developing major adverse cardiovascular events,whether these associations vary according to fatal and non-fatal outcomes and how behavioural,psychological and physiological factors mediate these *** This longitudinal analysis included data from 19360 individuals with T2DM at baseline(2006-2010)from the UK *** isolation and loneliness were measured using self-report *** study outcomes included the first events of myocardial infarction(MI)or stroke(n=2273)and all-cause(n=2820)or cardiovascular disease-related mortality through linked hospital data ordeath *** Over a median follow-up of 12.4 years(interquartile range(IQR):11.6-13.3 years),participants who were more socially isolated(most social isolation vs least social isolation)experienced increased risks for all-cause(hazard ratio(HR):1.33,95%confidence interval(Cl):1.19 to 1.47)and cardiovascular disease(HR:1.36,95%Cl:1.17 to 1.59)mortality but not first Ml or ***(yes vs no)was associated with a greater risk for a composite of incident MI or stroke(HR:1.37,95%Cl:1.19 to 1.57)but not *** isolation was associated with fatal Ml and stroke,whereas loneliness was associated with non-fatal Ml and *** significant associations of social isolation and loneliness with outcomes were mainly mediated by behavioural factors(mediating proportion:17.8%-28.2%and 17.6%-17.8%,respectively).Conclusions Among individuals with T2DM,social isolation and loneliness are associated with a greater risk of developing major adverse cardiovascular events,with differences in both risks stratified according to fatal and non-fatal events and underlying mediat

Planning a Sustainable New City

Pakistan, the sixth most populous country with 185 million people, grows in the last years at approximately 3.2 million people per year, generating a strong demand for new urban areas [1]. The Defense Housing Authority (DHA), among Pakistan’s most reputable land developers, has been instrumental in providing land for both residential and commercial use in several metropolitan areas. In Karachi, DHA has provided urban land in phases, with such land being most desirable to live and work, significantly improving the existing stock and allowing the growth of competitive economic activities. When DHA started Phase 10, at a distance of 55 km from the center of Karachi, the objective became to develop a self-sustained new city, although it should function as a satellite to the main metropolitan area. Pakistan has had a best experience from the planning of Islamabad by the legendary planner Constantinos Doxiadis, based on the Ekistics concept. So, the planners for the new city, called DHA City Karachi (DCK), also followed the Ekistics concept, enhanced to address the sustainability requirements of DHA. The resulting highly complex planning process, resulting from an uneven terrain and an irregular boundary, was possible to be carried out by employing advanced computer algorithms in the form of parametric design and GIS, tools that were unavailable to Doxiadis in the 60 s but fascinated him at the end of his professional life. This paper presents the sustainable planning approach for the new city of 600,000 people, handling physical constrains and site issues whilst ensuring adaptation to context. Then, the paper introduces how computing was employed towards applying Ekistics.

Phase-shifting digital holography in image reconstruction

A phase-shifting digital holography scheme developed to investigate internal defects in artworks is described. Phase-shifting is utilized to obtain a clear reconstructed object wave from a rough surface texture. A reverse-transform algorithm is employed to reconstruct the object wave on its original position of unknown distance or the imaging position from the object wave information on the holographic plane. To get the clearest reconstruction the exact registration of the unknown distance is determined by applying the intensity sum as the auto-focusing function, The spatial resolution of the reconstruction image is also investigated for a variety of affecting factors. Laboratory results of reconstruction images under deformation are presented.

Cardiometabolic risk through an integrative classification combining physical activity and sedentary behavior in European adolescents:HELENA study

Purpose: This study aims to compare adolescents' cardiometabolic risk score through an integrative classification of physical activity(PA),which involves the combination of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity(MVPA) and sedentary behavior(SB).Methods: A cross-sectional study derived from the Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescence Cross-Sectional Study database(2006-2008) was conducted in adolescents(n = 548; boys, 47.3%; 14.7 ± 1.2 years) from 10 European cities. MVPA and SB were objectively measured using accelerometry. Adolescents were divided into 4 categories according to MVPA(meeting or not meeting the international recommendations) and the median of SB time(above or below sex-and age-specific median) as follows: High-SB & Inactive, Low-SB & Inactive,High-SB & Active, and Low-SB & Active. A clustered cardiometabolic risk score was computed using the homeostatic model assessment, systolic blood pressure, triglycerides, total cholesterol/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, sum 4 skinfolds, and cardiorespiratory fitness(CRF).Analyses of covariance were performed to discern differences on cardiometabolic risk scores among PA categories and each health ***: The cardiometabolic risk score was lower in adolescents meeting the MVPA recommendation and with less time spent in SB in comparison to the high-SB & Inactive group(p < 0.05). However, no difference in cardiometabolic risk score was established between High-SB or Low-SB groups in inactive adolescents. It is important to note that CRF was the only variable that showed a significant modification(higher)when children were compared from the category of physically inactive with "active" but not from high-to ***: Being physically active is the most significant and protective outcome in adolescents to reduce cardiometabolic risk. Lower SB does not exhibit a significant and extra beneficial difference.

Effects of the Neurodevelopmental Treatment (NDT) on the Mobility of Children with Cerebral Palsy

The purpose of the present study was to examine the effectiveness of the NDT method (Bobath) in children with CP. Twenty children with cerebral palsy (7 with quadriplegia, 6 with diplegia and 7 with right hemiplegia), with mean age of 4. 85 ± 2. 49 years, took part in the study. Materials-Method: The children participated in an intervention that consisted of an 8-week Bobath program. GMFM-88, PEDI and TUG scores were measured across three time points during the intervention (a baseline measurement, a second at the end of the intervention and a post-intervention measurement one month after the end of the intervention). Results: The results of the NDT intervention showed that the participant children significantly improved their GMFM-88 and TUG scores between initial and final measurement and maintained this one month later (F2,36 = 69,778, p 0.001), while in PEDI the intervention program had no statistically significant effect (F2,36 = 0.844, p = 0.438). In conclusion, there is strong evidence of the effectiveness of the NDT (Bobath) method in improving the mobility of children regardless of the frequency of its application.

Photoacoustic microscopy(PAM)is an emerging imaging technology that can non-invasively visualize ocular structures in animal *** report describes an integrated multimodality imaging system that combines PAM,optical coherence tomography(OCT),and fluorescence microscopy(FM)to evaluate angiogenesis in larger animal ***-resolution in vivo imaging was performed in live rabbit eyes with vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)-induced retinal neovascularization(RNV).The results demonstrate that our multimodality imaging system can noninvasively visualize RNV in both albino and pigmented rabbits to determine retinal pathology using PAM and OCT and verify the leakage of neovascularization using FM and fluorescein *** work presents high-resolution visualization of angiogenesis in rabbits using a multimodality PAM,OCT,and FM system and may represent a major step toward the clinical translation of the technology.

The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) is a brief screening measure of emotional and behavioural difficulties in children and adolescents. The aim of this study was to assess reliability and validity of the Greek version of the SDQ. A representative Greek sample of 1194 adolescents (aged 11 to 17 years) and their parents completed the SDQ along with other measures. Internal consistency reliability was determined by calculation of the Cronbach α coefficient. Varimax Orthogonal Transformation was conducted to test the factor structure of the questionnaire. Validity was further examined by investigating the correlation of the SDQ with the KIDSCREEN questionnaire and its association with demographic factors. The inter-rater agreement between parent and self-reports was analyzed with Pearson’s correlation coefficient. Intra-class correlation coefficients (ICCs) were computed to determine test-retest stability. For both parent and the self-report SDQ versions, most items loaded onto their predicted factors in consistency with the originally proposed five-factor structure. Internal consistency reliability was acceptable with a Cronbach α above 0.70 for all SDQ scales except for conduct and peer problems. Inter-rater correlations ranged from 0.33 to 0.45. Test-retest stability was good (ICCs > 0.60). Correlation coefficients between the SDQ and KIDSCREEN questionnaire were significant. Small effect sizes (d > 0.5) of the socioeconomic status were found for all of the SDQ scale mean scores. In conclusion, the SDQ was found to have satisfying psychometric properties and could be suitable for assessing emotional and behavioural problems in Greek adolescents.

Comparative Reliability of the Infant Motor Profile (IMP) in the Greek Language for Infants 3 to 18 Months

In recent years, many tests have been developed to evaluate the mobility and functional capacity of children with Cerebral Palsy (CP). The Infant Motor Profile (IMP) is a recent qualitative infant kinetic behavior assessment for ages 3 to 18 months. Thus, the purpose of the present study is to determine the reliability of the IMP translated for the first time for Greek population, for infants aged 3 to 18 months in order to provide a reliable tool in the hands of experts. Twenty infants (11 girls and 9 boys) with average age ±12.75 months participated in the study. The Greek version of the IMP and a Nikon 5300 digital camera for video recording were used for data collection. The results showed that there were no statistically significant differences between the two independent evaluators and that the Greek IMP had strong reliability. Overall, the results of the present investigation provided considerable evidence suggesting that the Greek version of the IMP test is reliable and can be used to detect kinetic disorders in infants aged 3 to 18 months for the Greek population.

Simplified Coarse-Grained Dynamic Model for Real Gases

A simplified model is proposed for an easy understanding of the coarse-grained technique and for achieving a first approximation to the behavior of gases. A mole of a gas substance, within a cubic container, is represented by six particles symmetrically moving. The impacts of particles on container walls, the inter-particle collisions, as well as the volume of particles and the inter-particle attractive forces, obeying a Lennard-Jones curve, are taken into account. Thanks to the symmetry, the problem is reduced to the nonlinear dynamic analysis of a SDOF oscillator, which is numerically solved by a step-by-step time integration algorithm. Five applications of proposed model, on Carbon Dioxide, are presented: 1) Ideal gas in STP conditions. 2) Real gas in STP conditions. 3) Condensation for small molar volume. 4) Critical point. 5) Iso-kinetic energy curves and iso-therms in the critical point region. Results of the proposed model are compared with test data and results of the Van der Waals model for real gases.
