Sustainable development problems and countermeasures:A case study of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau(QTP)is a region with unique and distinctive natural landscapes and cultural charac-teristics and presents a useful case to improve understanding of sustainable development for regions with extreme environments and unique social backgrounds.Research has been conducted for small-scale regions,however there has been insufficient exploration of the problems and countermeasures for sustainable development in Tibet.This study analyzes different functional zones(urbanized zones,agricultural zones,pastoral zones and ecological se-curity zones)of the QTP.Then it develops a sustainable livelihood index(SLI)based on the sustainable livelihood analysis framework resulting in three main findings.First,sustainable livelihoods vary greatly across functional zones.The SLI for farmers and herdsmen in the urbanized zones is the highest,with a value of 3.57,followed by the agricultural zones of 3.07.In comparison,the SLI values in the ecological security zones and pastoral zones are 2.92 and 2.85,respectively,indicating that the two zones present challenges for sustainable develop-ment in the QTP.Second,all counties had few natural,social or physical assets,indicating the need to expand assets to achieve sustainable livelihoods.Finally,urbanized and agricultural counties had more robust livelihood strategies than ecological and pastoral counties.In light of these results,strategic options have been formulated to promote sustainable development.These options include:accelerating construction of the third pole national park group;establishing a pattern of green mining;promoting the biological resources industry;and initiating a carbon trading market in the QTP.

The Development of Khorgas Port in Xinjiang, China and Its Effect on Surrounding Towns

The sustainable development of border port-cities is of considerable significance to the stabilization and consolidation of border areas,unlike coastal-ports cities that consist of coastal ports and cities.Border ports should continue to drive the development of their surrounding towns to provide high-quality living conditions,employment,and housing for inhabitants of such towns and enhance the population agglomeration capacity of border areas.This study aimed to analyze the structure of employment and settlement in the cities surrounding the Khorgas Port at the different stages of its development—employing semi-structured interviews with individuals to analyze the spatial orientation characteristics of the daily needs of different groups of people and reveal the ways in which border ports drive the development of their surrounding towns—and recommend ways in which this can be improved.This study finds that as the Khorgas Port’s mutual trade market,industrial base,comprehensive management,and other functions continue to grow,the port is becoming increasingly important.As more people work and settl in the surrounding towns,their living needs also increase.However,a considerable number of employed people do not live nearby,and many living needs are not being addressed in the towns surrounding the port.The study also reveals the living services demands of government management personnel who work at the port on weekdays and return to Yining City on weekends,employees of industrial enterprises who work at the port and return home for the New Year’s celebration,and government management personnel and individual business personnel who work at the port and live nearby.In the future,the focus should be on improving the living conditions of the inhabitants of the towns surrounding Khorgas Port,including public services and the settlement ability of employees of industrial enterprises to better realize the radiation drive of the port on the surrounding towns.

Groundwater level prediction of landslide based on classification and regression tree

According to groundwater level monitoring data of Shuping landslide in the Three Gorges Reservoir area, based on the response relationship between influential factors such as rainfall and reservoir level and the change of groundwater level, the influential factors of groundwater level were selected. Then the classification and regression tree（CART） model was constructed by the subset and used to predict the groundwater level. Through the verification, the predictive results of the test sample were consistent with the actually measured values, and the mean absolute error and relative error is 0.28 m and 1.15%respectively. To compare the support vector machine（SVM） model constructed using the same set of factors, the mean absolute error and relative error of predicted results is 1.53 m and 6.11% respectively. It is indicated that CART model has not only better fitting and generalization ability, but also strong advantages in the analysis of landslide groundwater dynamic characteristics and the screening of important variables. It is an effective method for prediction of ground water level in landslides.

Layered Mg-Al spinel supported Ce-Fe-Zr-O oxygen carriers for chemical looping reforming

A series of layered Mg-Al spinel supported Ce-Fe-Zr-O oxygen carriers were prepared for co-production of syngas and pure hydrogen via chemical looping steam reforming(CLSR).The presence of magnesium-aluminum layered double oxides(Mg Al-LDO)significantly increases the specific surface area of the mixed oxides,reduces the particle size of CeO2-based solid solution and promotes the dispersion of free Fe2O3.When reacting with methane,Mg Al-LDO supported oxygen carrier shows much lower temperature for methane oxidation than the pure CeFe-Zr-O sample,indicating enhanced low-temperature reactivity.Among different Ce-Fe-Zr-O(x)/Mg Al-LDO samples,the Ce-Fe-Zr-O(40 wt%)/Mg Al-LDO sample shows the best performance for the selective oxidation of methane to syngas and the H2 production by water splitting.After a long period of high temperature redox experiment,the Ce-Fe-Zr-O(40 wt%)/Mg Al-LDO oxygen carrier still shows high activity for syngas generation.The comparison on the morphology of the fresh and cycled oxygen carriers indicates that the Mg-Al spinel support still forms a stable skeleton structure with high dispersion of active components on the surface after the long-term cycling,which contributes to excellent redox stability of the Ce-Fe-Zr-O(40 wt%)/Mg Al-LDO oxygen carrier.

Tectonic characteristics and structural styles of a continental rifted basin:Revelation from deep seismic reflection profiles

The Fushan Depression is a half-graben rifted sub-basin located in the southeast of the Beibuwan Basin, South China Sea. The Paleogene Liushagang sequence is the main hydrocarbon-bearing stratigraphic unit in the sub-basin. Using three-dimensional（3-D）seismic data and logging data over the sub-basin, we analyzed structural styles and sedimentary characteristics of the Liushagang sequence. Five types of structural styles were defined： ancient horst, traditional slope, flexure slope-break, faulted slope-break and multiple-stage faults slope, and interpretations for positions, background and development formations of each structural style were discussed. Structural framework across the sub-basin reveals that the most remarkable tectonic setting is represented by the central transfer zone（CTZ） which divides the sub-basin into two independent depressions, and two kinds of sequence architectures are summarized：（i） the western multi-stage faults slope;（ii） the eastern flexure slope break belt. Combined with regional stress field of the Fushan Depression, we got plane combinations of the faults, and finally built up plan distribution maps of structural system for main sequence. Also, we discussed the controlling factors mainly focused on subsidence history and background tectonic activities such as volcanic activity and earthquakes. The analysis of structural styles and tectonic evolution provides strong theoretical support for future prospecting in the Fushan subbasin and other similar rifted basins of the Beibuwan Basin in South China Sea.

Recent advances in systemic and local delivery of ginsenosides using nanoparticles and nanofibers

Ginsenosides are the main pharmacologically active constituents of ginseng which have been used in East Asian countries for centuries to modulate blood pressure,metabolism and immune function.Following the technological advances in isolation,purification and mass production,their mechanisms of action are gradually elucidated,providing solid basis for clinical applications.Ginseng extracts(total ginsenosides)and ginsenoside Rg3,CK,Rd have been marketed or entered clinical trials as drugs or dietary supplements.Despite the proven safety and efficacy of some ginsenosides,their applications are hindered by inferior pharmacokinetics such as low solubility,poor membrane permeability and metabolic instability.Nanoparticle formulation of drugs and implantable drug depots are effective strategies to improve the pharmacokinetics of therapeutic agents by enhancing solubility,providing protection,facilitating intracellular transport,and enabling sustained and controlled release.This mini-review summarizes the recent advances in systemic delivery of ginsenosides using liposomes,micelles,albumin-based nanoparticles,and inorganic nanoparticles,as well as local delivery of ginsenosides by electronspun fibrous membranes and hydrogels.

In an era marked by increased longevity,a deeper understanding of the older population is vital. By introducing an overlooked evolutionary perspective on aging, this article challenges traditional biogerontology, which primarily focuses on biological and clinical aspects. It articulately differentiates between chronological and physiological aging, suggesting that aging is an evolutionary byproduct rather than a direct evolutionary event.

Effects of Maillard reaction and its product AGEs on aging and age-related diseases

Maillard reaction(MR)is a non-enzymatic browning reaction commonly seen in food processing,which occurs between reducing sugars and compounds with amino groups.Despite certain advantages based on Maillard reaction products(MRPs)found in some food for health and storage application have appeared,however,the MR occurring in human physiological environment can produce advanced glycation end products(AGEs)by non-enzymatic modification of macromolecules such as proteins,lipids and nucleic acid,which could change the structure and functional activity of the molecules themselves.In this review,we take AGEs as our main object,on the one hand,discuss physiologic aging,that is,age-dependent covalent cross-linking and modification of proteins such as collagen that occur in eyes and skin containing connective tissue.On the other hand,pathological aging associated with autoimmune and inflammatory diseases,neurodegenerative diseases,diabetes and diabetic nephropathy,cardiovascular diseases and bone degenerative diseases have been mainly proposed.Based on the series of adverse effects of accelerated aging and disease pathologies caused by MRPs,the possible harm caused by some MR can be slowed down or inhibited by artificial drug intervention,dietary pattern and lifestyle control.It also stimulates people's curiosity to continue to explore the potential link between the MR and human aging and health,which should be paid more attention to for the development of life sciences.
