Objective To determine whether sulforaphane （SFN） protects neurons against injury caused by oxygen-glucose deprivation/reoxygenation （OGD/R） and, if so, to investigate the possible mechanisms. Methods Primary cultures of neurons were prepared from the cerebral cortex of 1-day-old Sprague-Dawley rats. On days 5-6 in vitro, the neurons were exposed to OGD for 1 h, followed by reoxygenation for 24 h. Cells were treated with 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1, 2.5, or 5 μmol/L SFN, with or without 10 μmol/L LY294002, a PI3K-specific inhibitor, during OGD/R （a total of 25 h）. After 24-h reoxygenation, MTT was used to assess viability and injury was assessed by Hoechst 33258/propidium iodide （PI） staining; immunofluorescence staining and Western blot were performed to detect molecular events associated with apoptosis. Results The MTT assay showed that 1 μmol/L SFN significantly increased viability, and Hoechst 33258/PI staining showed that the numbers of injured neurons were reduced significantly in the SFN group. Furthermore, immunofluorescence staining and Western blot showed that SFN increased Bcl-2 and decreased cleaved caspase-3 levels. Moreover, LY294002 inhibited the phosphorylated-Akt expression evoked by SFN, decreased Bcl-2 expression and increased cleaved caspase-3 expression. Conclusion SFN protects neurons against injury from OGD/R and this effect may be partly associated with an anti-apoptosis pathway.

This paper establishes an irreversible DualMiller cycle (DMC) model with the heat transfer (HT) loss, friction loss (FL) and other internal irreversible losses. To analyze the effects of the cut-off ratio (ρ) and Miller cycle ratio (rM) on the power output (P), thermal efficiency (η) and ecological function (E), obtain the optimal popt and optimal rMopt, and compare the performance characteristics of DMC with its simplified cycles and with different optimization objective functions, the P,η and E of irreversible DMC are analyzed and optimized by applying the finite time thermodynamic (FTT) theory. Expressions of P,η and E are derived. The relationships among P,η, E and compression ratio (ε) are obtained by numerical examples. The effects of ρ and rM on P,η, E, maximum power output (MP), maximum efficiency (MEF) and maximum ecological function (ME) are analyzed. Performance differences among the DMC, the Otto cycle (OC), the Dual cycle (DDC), and the Otto-Miller cycle (OMC) are compared for fixed design parameters. Performance characteristics of irreversible DMC with the choice of P,η and E as optimization objective functions are analyzed and compared. The results show that the irreversible DMC engine can reach a twice-maximum power, a twicemaximum efficiency, and a twice-maximum ecological fiinction, respectively. Moreover, when choosing E as the optimization objective, there is a 5.2% of improvement in η while there is a drop of only 2.7% in P compared to choosing P as the optimization objective. However, there is a 5.6% of improvement in P while there is a drop of only 1.3% in rj compared to choosing as the optimization objective.

In order to investigate the anti-leaching capability of pyrochlore Gd2Zr2O7 immobilized An3＋, trivalent neodymium was used as the simulacrums for radioactive wastes with trivalence, Gd2-xNdxZr2O7（0.0 ≤ x≤2.0） series samples were successfully synthesized by high temperature solid reaction and using Gd2O3, ZrO2 powders as starting materials. The experiments of long-term chemical stability were conducted in synthetic seawater at 40 and 70 ℃. The XRD diffractive data and extraction ratio of as-received samples were collected with the help of X-ray diffraction （XRD） instrument and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry （ICP- Mass）. The results indicate that the phases of as-received compounds keep the single phase of pyrochlore. The extraction ratio of Gd3＋, Zr4＋ and Nd3＋ in waste forms is increasing with the increase of immersion time in synthetic seawater. The extraction ratio of waste forms at 70 ℃ is higher than at 40 ℃. The highest extraction ratio of Gd3＋, Zr4＋ and Nd3＋ after 42 days is near 0.025 8, 0.003 8 and 0.045 2 μ***-1, respectively.

Electrical, Thermal, and Mechanical Properties of Cu/Ti3AlC2 Functional Gradient Materials Prepared by Low-temperature Spark Plasma Sintering

Cu/Ti3AlC2 composite and functional-gradient materials with excellent electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity as well as good flexural properties were prepared by low-temperature spark plasma sintering of Cu and Ti3AlC2 powder mixtures. The phase compositions of the materials were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, and their microstructure was characterized by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Further, the electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, and flexural properties of the materials were tested. Results show that, for the composite materials, the resistivity rises from 0.75 × 10^-7 Ω·m only to 1.32 × 10^-7 Ω·m and the thermal diffusivity reduces from 82.5 mm^2/s simply to 39.8 mm^2/s, while the flexural strength improves from 412.9 MPa to 471.3 MPa, as the content of Ti3AlC2 is increased from 5 wt%to 25 wt%. Additionally, the functional-gradient materials sintered without interface between the layers exhibit good designability, and their overall electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, and flexural strength are all higher than those of the corresponding uniform composite material.

Robust minimum class variance twin support vector machine(RMCV-TWSVM) presented previously gets better classification performance than the classical TWSVM. The RMCV-TWSVM introduces the class variance matrix of positive and negative samples into the construction of two hyperplanes. However, it does not consider the total structure information of all the samples, which can substantially reduce its classification accuracy. In this paper, a new algorithm named structural regularized TWSVM based on within-class scatter and between-class scatter(WSBS-STWSVM) is put forward. The WSBS-STWSVM can make full use of the total within-class distribution information and between-class structure information of all the samples. The experimental results illustrate high classification accuracy and strong generalization ability of the proposed algorithm.

Environmental load is the primary factor in the design of offshore engineering structures and ocean current is the principal environmental load that causes underwater structural failure. In computational analysis, the calculation of current load is mainly based on the current profile. The current profile model, which is based on a structural failure criterion, is conducive to decreasing the uncertainty of the current load. In this study, we used prototype monitoring data and the empirical orthogonal function(EOF) method to investigate the current profile in the South China Sea and its correlation with the design of underwater structural strength and the dynamic design of fatigue. The underwater structural strength design takes into account the size of the structure and the service water depth. We propose profiles for the overall and local designs using the inverse first-order reliability method(IFORM). We extracted the characteristic profile current(CPC) of the monitored sea area to solve dynamic design problems such as vortex-induced vibration(VIV). We used random sampling to verify the feasibility of using the EOF method to calculate the CPC from the current data and identified the main problems associated with using the CPC, which deserve close attention in VIV design. Our research conclusions provide direct references for determining current load in this sea area. This analysis method can also be used in the analysis of other sea areas or field variables.

Photocatalytic degradation of 4-tert-octylphenol in a spiral photoreactor system

A spiral photoreactor system （SPS） was developed for the degradation of 4-tert-octylphenol （4-t-OP） in aqueous phase. 4-t-OP was previously considered as a endocrine disrupting compound frequently present in water. The direct photodegradation reaction caused by the SPS was found to accord with the characteristic of apparent first-order reaction with reaction rate constant k = 4.8 x 10-2 min-1. However, the direct photodegradation reaction could not make the 4-t-OP mineralized. The photodegradation efficiency increased from 88% to 91.2% in 45 min irradiation period after the internal surface of SPS was sintered with TiO2 thin film as catalyst. Catalyst concentration, number of catalyst coating layers and initial concentration of 4-t-OP were proven to be the factors affecting the photocatalytic degradation performance of the SPS on aqueous 4-t-OP. The degradation mechanism was investigated and the byproducts were analyzed using total organic carbon analyzer （TOC） and LC-MS. The possible chemical structures of the products were suggested. SPS with single layer of TiO2 prepared by sintering 13.6% of TiO2 precursor was proven to be more efficient than most of previous systems for removal of 4-t-OP from aqueous phase. 28.3% of the 4-t-OP was mineralized in 45 min according to the decreased amount of TOC value.

Iron and oxalic acids are widely distributed in the atmosphere and easily form ferric oxalate complex(Fe(III)-Ox).The tropospheric aqueous-phase could provide a medium to enable the photo-Fenton reaction with Fe(III)-Ox under solar *** the photolysis mechanisms of Fe(III)-Ox have been investigated extensively,information about the oxidation of volatile organic compounds(VOC),specifically the potential for Secondary Organic Aerosol(SOA)formation in the Fe(III)-Ox system,is *** this study,a ubiquitous VOC methacrolein(MACR)is chosen as a model VOC,and the oxidation of MACR with Fe(III)-Ox is investigated under typical atmospheric water *** effects of oxalate concentration,Fe(III)concentration,MACR concentration,and pH on the oxidation of MACR are studied in *** show that the oxidation rate of MACR greatly accelerates in the presence of oxalate when compared with only Fe(III).The oxidation rate of MACR also accelerates with increasing concentration of *** effect of Fe(III)is found to be more *** oxidation rate of MACR first increases and then decreases with increasing Fe(III)*** oxidation rate of MACR increases monotonically with decreasing pH in the common atmospheric water pH range or with decreasing MACR *** production of ferrous and hydrogen peroxide,pH,and aqueous absorbance are monitored throughout the reaction *** quenching experiments verify that·OH and O_(2)^(+)are both responsible for the oxidation of *** is found to rapidly oxidize into small organic acids with higher boiling points and oligomers with higher molecular weight,which contributes to the yield of *** results suggest that Fe(III)-Ox plays an important role in atmospheric oxidation.
