Empirically standardised peak luminosity of Type Ia supernovae(SNe Ia)as a standard candle has become one of the most powerful probes of the expansion history of the late universe.Although the existence of such a consistent peak luminosity could be interpreted as a consequence of the fixed critical Chandrasekhar mass at which a carbon-oxygen white dwarf explodes,there is growing evidence for a more complex environmental dependence to the SN Ia luminosity beyond the current understanding of the SN Ia physics.

Great attention has been given to high-performance and inexpensive lithiumion batteries(LIBs)in response to the ever-increasing demand for the explosive growth of electric vehicles(EVs).High-performance and low-cost Co-freeNi-rich layered cathodes are considered one of the most favorable candidates for nextgeneration LIBs because the current supply chain of EVs relies heavily on scarce and expensive Co.Herein,we review the recent research progress on Co-free Nirich layered cathodes,emphasizing on analyzing the necessity of replacing Co and the popular improvment methods.The current advancements in the design strategies of Co-free Ni-rich layered cathodes are summarized in detail.Despite considerable improvements achieved so far,the main technical challenges contributing to the deterioration of Co-free Ni-rich cathodes such as detrimental phase transitions,crack formation,and severe interfacial side reactions,are difficult to resolve by a single technique.The cooperation of multiple modification strategies is expected to accelerate the industrialization of Co-free Ni-rich layered cathodes,and the corresponding synergistic mechanisms urgently need to be studied.More effects will be aroused to explore high-performance Co-free Ni-rich layered cathodes to promote the sustainable development of LIBs.

This cohort study was performed to explore the influence of intensive care unit(ICU)quality on in-hospital mortality of veno-venous(V-V)extracorporeal membrane oxygenation(ECMO)-supported patients in China.The study involved all V-V ECMO-supported patients in 318 of 1700 tertiary hospitals from 2017 to 2019,using data from the National Clinical Improvement System and China National Critical Care Quality Control Center.ICU quality was assessed by quality control indicators and capacity parameters.Among the 2563 V-V ECMO-supported patients in 318 hospitals,a significant correlation was found between ECMO-related complications and prognosis.The reintubation rate within 48 hours after extubation and the total ICU mortality rate were independent risk factors for higher in-hospital mortality of V-V ECMO-supported patients(cutoff:1.5%and 7.0%;95%confidence interval:1.05–1.48 and 1.04–1.45;odds ratios:1.25 and 1.23;P=0.012 and P=0.015,respectively).Meanwhile,the V-V ECMO center volume was a protective factor(cutoff of≥50 cases within the 3-year study period;95%confidence interval:0.57–0.83,odds ratio:0.69,P=0.0001).The subgroup analysis of 864 patients in 11 high-volume centers further strengthened these findings.Thus,ICU quality may play an important role in improving the prognosis of V-V ECMO-supported patients.

The Omicron variants spread rapidly worldwide after being initially detected in South Africa in November 2021.It showed increased transmissibility and immune evasion with far more amino acid mutations in the spike(S)protein than the previously circulating variants of concern(VOCs).Notably,on 15 July 2022,we monitored the first VOC/Omicron subvariant BA.2.75 in China from an imported case.Moreover,nowadays,this subvariant still is predominant in India.It has nine additional mutations in the S protein compared to BA.2,three of which(W152R,G446S,and R493Q reversion)might contribute to higher transmissibility and immune escape.This subvariant could cause wider spread and pose a threat to the global situation.Our timely reporting and continuous genomic analysis are essential to fully elucidate the characteristics of the subvariant BA.2.75 in the future.

欧盟于2023年6月发布了首份经济安全战略,引发国际社会广泛关注。本文较为全面系统地梳理与剖析了该战略,包括其出台背景、政策架构、与之相关的欧盟经济政策理念转变、其落实前景及影响等。总体而言,在新冠疫情、乌克兰危机全面升级、新产业革命兴起、美国对华战略竞争等因素的叠加影响下,当前欧盟深陷风险与竞争力焦虑之中。经济安全战略的出台标志着欧盟内外经济政策的底层逻辑正在由“效率至上”转为“效率与安全并重”,在某些领域甚至是“安全至上”。该战略遵循“识别风险—去风险”的思路设计了一套政策架构,体现了欧盟由提出“开放性战略自主”到提出全面“去风险”的过程中其内部主流经济政策理念的变化。当前欧盟正加快推进经济安全战略,但从多方面看,其落实前景及效果存在较大不确定性,甚至会因“去风险”而引发“新风险”。虽然该战略带有明显的针对中国的意味,但是加强对话与合作仍为中欧双方共识,而且具有重要的全球意义。

OBJECTIVE:To investigate the effectiveness and safety of Jiawei Xiaoyao pill(加味逍遥丸,JXP)in the treatment of symptoms associated with premenstrual syndrome(PMS).METHODS:A total of 144 regularly menstruating women with PMS were recruited at 8 sites in China from August 2017 to December 2018,and randomized to receive either a JXP or a matching placebo(12 g/d,6 g twice a day)for 3 menstrual cycles.The primary indicator was the reduced Daily Record of Severity of Problems(DRSP)scores in the luteal phase after 3 months of treatment.The safety outcomes included clinical adverse events(AEs),adverse reactions(ARs),changes in vital signs,and laboratory tests.RESULTS:JXP surpassed the placebo in reducing DRSP scores(psychological/somatic dysfunction)in the luteal phase over 3 menstrual cycles of treatment(PFAS=0.002,PPPS=0.001).Additionally,there were no significant differences in the incidence of AEs,severe AEs,withdrawal due to AEs and ARs between the two groups(all P>0.05),and no clinically significant adverse medical events related to the test drug observed.CONCLUSIONS:JXP was superior to the placebo in relieving the symptoms associated with PMS,which signified that JXP may be effective,safe,and welltolerated as an alternative therapy.

ADVANCE SELLING IN THE PRESENCE OF PRODUCT DIFFUSION EFFECT

Product diffusion refers to the phenomenon that the later demand is dependent on the early sales. To investigate how a firm＇s advance selling strategy is affected by the effect of product diffusion, we consider a monopolist seller who sells a fashionable product in a market that comprises of myopic and strategic consumers over two periods （i.e., the advance selling season and the regular selling season）. For a linear product diffusion effect we fred that, when the effect of product diffusion is positive, the seller may set an extremely high advance selling price to induce the strategic consumers to purchase in the regular selling season, which is counter-intuitive. Moreover, the optimal procurement quantity for the seller may increase in the negative effect of product diffusion and decrease in the amount of strategic consumers. When we extend our model to consider a concave quadratic product diffusion effect, however, the optimal procurement quantity is concave in the amount of strategic consumers. Numerical studies are further presented to discuss the managerial insights.

The oxidative pentose phosphate(OPP) pathway provides metabolic intermediates for the shikimate pathway and directs carbon flow to the biosynthesis of aromatic amino acids(AAAs), which serve as basic protein building blocks and precursors of numerous metabolites essential for plant growth. However, genetic evidence linking the two pathways is largely unclear. In this study, we identified 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase 2(PGD2), the rate-limiting enzyme of the cytosolic OPP pathway, through suppressor screening of arogenate dehydrogenase 2(adh2) in Arabidopsis. Our data indicated that a single amino acid substitution at position 63(glutamic acid to lysine) of PGD2 enhanced its enzyme activity by facilitating the dissociation of products from the active site of PGD2, thus increasing the accumulation of AAAs and partially restoring the defective phenotype of adh2. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the point mutation occurred in a well-conserved amino acid residue. Plants with different amino acids at this conserved site of PGDs confer diverse catalytic activities, thus exhibiting distinct AAAs producing capability. These findings uncover the genetic link between the OPP pathway and AAAs biosynthesis through PGD2. The gain-of-function point mutation of PGD2 identified here could be considered as a potential engineering target to alter the metabolic flux for the production of AAAs and downstream compounds.

Background:Microfluidic systems have advantages such as a high throughput,small reaction volume,and precise control of the cellular position and environment.These advantages have allowed microfluidics to be widely used in several fields of synthetic biology in recent years.Results'.In this article,we reviewed the microfluidic-based methods for synthetic biology from two aspects:the construction of synthetic gene circuits and the analysis of synthetic gene systems.We used some examples to illuminate the progresses and challenges in the steps of synthetic gene circuits construction and approaches of gene expression analysis with microfluidic systems.Conclusion:Comparing to traditional methods,microfluidic tools promise great advantages in the synthetic genetic circuit building and analysis process.Moreover,new microfluidic systems together with the mathematical modeling of synthetic circuits or consortiums are desirable to perform complex genetic circuit construction and understand the natural gene regulation in cells and population interactions better.
