Brightening heavily doped upconversion nanoparticles by tuning characteristics of core-shell structures

Heavily doped upconversion nanoparticles(UCNPs)potentially have exceptional photon upconversion abilities that are promising for diverse applications,such as lasing and super-resolution ***,heavily doped UCNPs typically can only offer mediocre upconversion luminescence intensity,and there still lacks general guidelines for the design and synthesis of heavily doped ***,in order to boost the upconversion luminescence of heavily doped UCNPs,we studied the influence of characteristics of the core-shell structure on heavily doped UCNPs'upconversion *** find that some empirical guidelines derived from conventional UCNPs are not suitable for heavily doped *** NaYbF_(4):Tm@NaYF_(4) core-shell UCNPs with a high concentration of Yb_(3+)as a representative,our studies reveal that a rather thick inert NaYF4 shell is needed to protect the UCNPs from surface quenching,and the upconversion luminescence may undergo the cooperative sensitization process,which should be due to the highly concentrated Yb~(3+)*** addition,the upconversion luminescence of heavily doped NaYbF4:Tm UCNPs exhibits no obvious dependence on the type of inert ***,our results show that confining both Yb~(3+)and Tm~(3+)dopants in a thin layer(known as theδ-doping strategy)does not work well in the heavily doped ***,we propose a NaYbF_(4):Tm@NaYbF_(4)@NaYF_(4) core-shell-shell structure to enhance the luminescence of heavily doped UCNPs,by weakening the dissipation of excitation energy and strengthening the *** findings should be helpful to establish general design principles for developing the brightest possible UCNPs that can meet the requirements of various applications.

Digital monitoring of rotary-percussive drilling with down-the-hole hammer for profiling weathered granitic ground

Rock and geotechnical engineering investigations involve drilling holes in ground with or without retrieving soil and rock samples to construct the subsurface ground *** the basis of an actual soil nailing drilling for a slope stability project in Hong Kong,this paper further develops the drilling process monitoring(DPM)method for digitally profiling the subsurface geomaterials of weathered granitic rocks using a compressed airflow driven percussive-rotary drilling machine with down-the-hole(DTH)*** transducers are installed on the drilling machine and record the chuck displacement,DTH rotational speed,and five pressures from five compressed airflows in real-time *** mechanism and operations of the drilling machine are elaborated in detail,which is essential for understanding and evaluating the drilling data.A MATLAB program is developed to automatically filter the recorded drilling data in time series and classify them into different drilling processes in sub-time *** processes include penetration,push-in with or without rod,pull-back with or without rod,rod-tightening and *** drilling data are further reconstructed to plot the curve of drill-bit depth versus the net drilling time along each of the six *** curve is found to contain multiple linear segments with a constant penetration rate,which implies a zone of homogenous geomaterial with different weathering *** effect from fluctuation of the applied pressures is evaluated *** analyses are presented for accurately assess and verify the underground profiling and strength in weathered granitic rock,which provided the basis of using DPM method to confidently assess drilling measurements to interpret the subsurface profile in real time.

Viability of all-solid-state lithium metal battery coupled with oxide solid-state electrolyte and high-capacity cathode

Owing to the utilization of lithium metal as anode with the ultrahigh theoretical capacity density of 3860 mA h g^(-1)and oxide-based ceramic solid-state electrolytes(SE),e.g.,garnet-type Li7La_(3)Zr_(2)O_(12)(LLZO),all-state-state lithium metal batteries(ASLMBs)have been widely accepted as the promising alternatives for providing the satisfactory energy density and ***,its applications are still challenged by plenty of technical and scientific *** this contribution,the co-sintering temperature at 500℃is proved as a compromise method to fabricate the composite cathode with structural integrity and declined capacity fading of LiNi_(0.5)Co_(0.2)Mn_(0.3)O_(2)(NCM).On the other hand,it tends to form weaker grain boundary(GB)inside polycrystalline LLZO at inadequate sintering temperature for LLZO,which can induce the intergranular failure of SE during the growth of Li filament inside the unavoidable defect on the interface of ***,increasing the strength of GB,refining the grain to 0.4μm,and precluding the interfacial defect are suggested to postpone the electro-chemo-mechanical failure of SE with weak ***,the advanced sintering techniques to lower the co-sintering temperature for both NCM-LLZO composite cathode and LLZO SE can be posted out to realize the viability of state-of-the-art ASLMBs with higher energy density as well as the guaranteed safety.

Heterogeneous advanced oxidation processes(AOPs)based on non-radical reactive species are considered as a powerful technology for wastewater purification due to their long half-lives and high adaptation in a wide pH ***,we fabricate surface Co defect-rich spinel ZnCo_(2)O_(4)porous nanosheets,which can generate≡CoIV=O and ^(1)O_(2) over a wide pH range of 3.81-10.96 by the formation of amphoteric≡Zn(OH)2 in peroxymonosulfate(PMS)activation *** functional theory(DFT)calculations show Co defect-rich ZnCo_(2)O_(4)possesses much stronger adsorption ability and more electron transfer to ***,the adsorption mode changes from terminal oxygen Co-O-Co to Co-O,accelerating the polarization of adjacent oxygen,which is beneficial to the generation of≡CoIV=O and Generating ^(1)O_(2) .Co defect-rich ZnCo_(2)O_(4)porous nanosheets exhibit highly active PMS activation activity and stability in p-nitrophenol(PNP)degradation,whose toxicity of degradation intermediates is significant *** Co defect-rich ZnCo_(2)O_(4)nanosheet catalyst sponge/PMS system achieved stable and efficient removal of PNP with a removal efficiency higher than 93%over 10 *** work highlights the development of functional catalyst and provides an atomic-level understanding into non-radical PMS activation process in wastewater treatment.

Arginine promotes seed energy metabolism,increasing wheat seed germination at low temperature

Low temperatures during germination inhibit seed growth,lead to small and weak seedlings,and significantly reduce the wheat *** the adverse effects of low temperature on wheat seed germination is highly important for achieving high and stable wheat *** this study,Tongmai 6(insensitive)and Zhengmai 113(sensitive),which have different low-temperature sensitivities during germination were treated with low temperature during *** transcriptome,metabolome and physiological data revealed that low temperature decreased the germination rate,downregulated the expression of a large number of genes involved in regulating glycometabolism,and inhibited carbon,nitrogen(especially amino acids)and energy metabolism in the *** content increased at low temperature,and its increase in the low-temperature-tolerant variety was significantly greater than that in the sensitive *** priming experiment showed that treatment with an appropriate concentration of arginine improved the seed germination *** conversion of starch to soluble sugar significantly increased under exogenous arginine conditions,the content of key metabolites in energy metabolism increased,and the utilization of ATP in the seeds *** together,arginine priming increased seed germination at low temperature by relieving inhibition of seed carbon and nitrogen metabolism and improving seed energy metabolism.

Mycorrhizal fungi mitigate nitrogen losses of an experimental grassland by facilitating plant uptake and soil microbial immobilization

Nitrogen(N)is one of the most limited nutrients of terrestrial ecosystems,whose losses are prevented in tightly coupled cycles in finely tuned *** change-induced N enrichment through atmospheric deposition and application of vast amounts of fertilizer are now challenging the terrestrial N *** mycorrhizal fungi(AMF)are known drivers of plant-soil nutrient fluxes,but a comprehensive assessment of AMF involvement in N cycling under global change is still ***,we simulated N enrichment by fertilization(low/high)in experimental grassland microcosms under greenhouse conditions in the presence or absence of AMF and continuously monitored different N pathways over nine *** found that high N enrichment by fertilization decreased the relative abundance of legumes and the plant species dominating the plant community changed from grasses to forbs in the presence of AMF,based on aboveground *** presence of AMF always maintained plant N:phosphorus(P)ratios between 14 and 16,no matter how the soil N availability *** in plant N:P ratios due to the increased plant N and P uptake might thus be a primary pathway of AMF altering plant community ***,we constructed a comprehensive picture of AMF’s role in N cycling,highlighting that AMF reduced N losses primarily by mitigating N leaching,while N_(2)O emissions played a marginal *** mycorrhizal fungi reduced N_(2)O emissions directly through the promotion of N_(2)O-consuming *** underlying mechanism for reducing N leaching is mainly the AMF-mediated improved nutrient uptake and AMF-associated microbial *** results indicate that synergies between AMF and other soil microorganisms cannot be ignored in N cycling and that the integral role of AMF in N cycling terrestrial ecosystems can buffer the upcoming global changes.

Zinc-ion batteries are promising for large-scale electrochemical energy storage systems,which still suffer from interfacial issues,e.g.,hydrogen evolution side reaction(HER),self-corrosion,and uncontrollable dendritic Zn *** the regulation of electric double layer(EDL)has been verified for interfacial issues,the principle to select the additive as the regulator is still ***,several typical amino acids with different characteristics were examined to reveal the interfacial behaviors in regulated EDL on the Zn *** charged acidic polarity(NCAP)has been unveiled as the guideline for selecting additive to reconstruct EDL with an inner zincophilic H_(2)O-poor layer and to replace H_(2)O molecules of hydrated Zn^(2+)with NCAP *** the synergistic effects of EDL regulation,the uncontrollable interface is significantly stabilized from the suppressed HER and anti-self-corrosion with uniform ***,by adding NCAP glutamate,a high average Coulombic efficiency of 99.83%of Zn metal is achieved in Zn|Cu asymmetrical cell for over 2000 cycles,and NH4V4O10|Zn full cell exhibits a high-capacity retention of 82.1%after 3000 cycles at 2 A g^(-1).Recapitulating,the NCAP principle posted here can quicken the design of trailblazing electrolyte additives for aqueous Zn-based electrochemical energy storage systems.

PVDF-assisted pyrolysis strategy for corrugated plate oxygen electrocatalysis nanoreactor:Simultaneously realizing efficient active sites and rapid mass transfer

Though Zn-air batteries(ZABs) are one of the most promising system for energy storage and conversion,challenge still persists in its commercial application due to the sluggish kinetics of oxygen reduction/evolution reaction(ORR/OER).Hereby,a polyvinylidene fluoride(PVDF)-assisted pyrolysis strategy is proposed to develop a novel corrugated plate-like bifunctional electrocatalyst using two-dimensional zeolitic imidazolate frameworks(2D ZIF-67) as the *** employed PVDF plays an important role in inheriting the original 2D structure of ZIF-67 and modulating the composition of the final *** a result,a corrugated plate-like electrocatalyst,high-density Co nanoparticles decorated 2D Co,N,and F tri-doped carbon nanosheets,can be *** acquired electrocatalyst enables efficient active sites and rapid mass transfer simultaneously,thus showing appreciable electrocatalytic performance for rechargeable Zn-air ***,our proposed strategy offers a new perspective to the design of advanced oxygen electrocatalysts.

Variational Learned Talking-Head Semantic Coded Transmission System

Video transmission requires considerable bandwidth,and current widely employed schemes prove inadequate when confronted with scenes featuring *** by the strides in talkinghead generative technology,the paper introduces a semantic transmission system tailored for talking-head *** system captures semantic information from talking-head video and faithfully reconstructs source video at the receiver,only one-shot reference frame and compact semantic features are required for the entire ***,we analyze video semantics in the pixel domain frame-by-frame and jointly process multi-frame semantic information to seamlessly incorporate spatial and temporal *** modeling is utilized to evaluate the diversity of importance among group semantics,thereby guiding bandwidth resource allocation for semantics to enhance system *** whole endto-end system is modeled as an optimization problem and equivalent to acquiring optimal rate-distortion *** evaluate our system on both reference frame and video transmission,experimental results demonstrate that our system can improve the efficiency and robustness of *** to the classical approaches,our system can save over 90%of bandwidth when user perception is close.

Dear Editor,Light fields give relatively complete description of scenes from perspective of angles and positions of rays. At present time, most of the computer vision algorithms take 2D images as input which are simplified expression of light fields with depth information discarded. In theory, computer vision tasks may achieve better performance as long as complete light fields are acquired.
