A nomogram for predicting acute respiratory distress syndrome in COVID-19 patients

Objective: To predict the in-hospital incidence of acute respiratory distress syndrome(ARDS) in COVID-19 patients by developing a predictive nomogram.Methods: Patients with COVID-19 admitted to Changsha Public Health Centre between 30 January 2020, and 22 February 2020 were enrolled in this study. Clinical characteristics and laboratory variables were analyzed and compared between patients with or without ARDS. Clinical characteristics and laboratory variables that were risk factors of ARDS were screened by the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator binary logistic regression. Based on risk factors, a prediction model was established by logistic regression and the final nomogram prognostic model was performed. The calibration curve was applied to evaluate the consistency between the nomogram and the ideal observation.Results: A total of 113 patients, including 99 non-ARDS patients and 14 ARDS patients were included in this study. Eight variables including hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cough, lactate dehydrogenase, creatine kinase, white blood count, body temperature, and heart rate were included in the model. The area under receiver operating characteristic curve, specificity, sensitivity, and accuracy of the full model were 0.969, 1.000, 0.857, and 0.875, respectively. The calibration curve also showed good agreement between the predicted and observed values in the model.Conclusions: The nomogram can be used to predict the in-hospital incidence of ARDS in COVID-19 patients.

As socioeconomic development is closely associated with changes in various risk factors for cancer,a timely and worldwide depiction of temporal and geographic cancer burden can provide insights on the effective prevention and treatment of this disease.Recently,the International Agency for Research on Cancer issued an update regarding the status of the global cancer burden for 36 forms of cancer in 185 countries(Sung et al.,2021).The report revealed that the worldwide cancer burden had increased rapidly between 2018 and 2020.Notably,female-specific breast cancer has replaced lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed form,and its incidence rate is increasing rapidly,especially in Asia.Against this background,the study will review and compare global cancer statistics between 2018 and 2020(Sung et al.,2021;Bray et al.,2018),Cancer Country Profiles China 2020(World Health Organization(WHO),2020)。

Generating universal chimeric antigen receptor expressing cell products from induced pluripotent stem cells:beyond the autologous CAR-T cells

Adoptive therapeutic immune cells, such as chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T cells and natural killer cells, have established a new generation of precision medicine based on which dramatic breakthroughs have been achieved in intractable lymphoma treatments. Currently, well-explored approaches focus on autologous cells due to their low immunogenicity, but they are highly restricted by the high costs, time consumption of processing, and the insufficiency of primary cells in some patients. Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) are cell sources that can theoretically produce indefinite well-differentiated immune cells. Based on the above facts, it may be reasonable to combine the iPSC technology and the CAR design to produce a series of highly controllable and economical "live" drugs. Manufacturing hypoimmunogenic iPSCs by inactivation or over-expression at the genetic level and then arming the derived cells with CAR have emerged as a form of "off-the-shelf" strategy to eliminate tumor cells efficiently and safely in a broader range of patients. This review describes the reasonability, feasibility, superiority, and drawbacks of such approaches, summarizes the current practices and relevant research progress, and provides insights into the possible new paths for personalized cell-based therapies.

Testing for Error Correlation in Semi-Functional Linear Models

Existing methods for analyzing semi-functional linear models usually assumed that random errors are not serially correlated or serially correlated with the known order.However,in some applications,these assumptions on random errors may be unreasonable or questionable.To this end,this paper aims at testing error correlation in a semi-functional linear model(SFLM).Based on the empirical likelihood approach,the authors construct an empirical likelihood ratio statistic to test the serial correlation of random errors and identify the order of autocorrelation if the serial correlation holds.The proposed test statistic does not need to estimate the variance as it is data adaptive and possesses the nonparametric version of Wilks'theorem.Simulation studies are conducted to investigate the performance of the proposed test procedure.Two real examples are illustrated by the proposed test method.

Architecture modification and In^(3+)-doping of WO_(3) photoanodes to boost the photoelectrochemical water oxidation performance

WO_(3) photoanodes have been widely utilized for the oxygen evolution reaction(OER)in the photoelectrochemical water splitting system.Herein,the effects of hydrazine hydrate modification and In^(3+)-doping on the physicochemical properties and photocurrent density of the WO_(3) photoanode prepared by hydrothermally treating at 160℃followed by calcining at 500℃are investigated.Among them,the hydrazine hydrate in the hydrothermal solution can serve as a texture regulator,resulting in the formation of WO_(3) films with the layered architecture stacked by nanosheets dominantly exposed(020)facets,which allows the WO_(3) films to have faster charge separation and larger specific surface area for OER according to the characterization results of microstructures and photoelectrochemcial behaviors;while the In^(3+)-doping can optimize the energy band structure of WO_(3) and adjust the work function to increase the driving force of OER based on the ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy,Mott–Schottky and open-circuit photovoltage plots.Under the simulated sunlight(AM1.5G)illumination,the designed In^(3+)–WO_(3)(N_2H_4)photoanode in Na_2SO_4 solution delivers amaximum incident photon-to-current efficiency of 38.6%at 410 nm and a photocurrent density of 1.93 mA cm^(-2)at 1.23 V vs.RHE,which is 2.8 and 3.0 times higher than the pristine WO_(3) photoanode,respectively.This study provides a promising strategy to improve the water splitting performance of nanostructured WO_(3) photoanodes by altering the architecture and introducing heteroatoms.

Phase equilibria in Ti-rich portion and thermodynamic re-optimization of Co-Ti system

The experimental and thermodynamic studies of the Co-Ti system are an important part of the project to build a thermodynamic database for multicomponent Co-Ti-based alloys.Several key alloys were prepared and then examined for microstructural,compositional and thermal analyses to determine the Ti-rich phase equilibria.According to the available experimental information,the Co-Ti system was thermodynamically re-optimized on the basis of CALPHAD method.Four disordered solutions,liquid,fcc-A1(α-Co),bcc-A2(β-Ti)and hcp-A3(ε-Co andα-Ti)were modeled as substitutional ones.CoTi_(2)with limited solubility was treated as a stoichiometric compound,whileγ-Co_(2)Ti andβ-Co_(2)Ti with certain solubility were described in the form of(Co,Ti)2(Co,Ti)1 using a two-sublattice model.A single Gibbs energy function was employed to model two order–disorder transformations from fcc-A1 to fcc-L12(Co3Ti)and from bcc-A2 to bcc-B2(CoTi).A group of self-consistent thermodynamic parameters of the Co-Ti system were obtained.With these thermodynamic parameters,the experimental data can be described more reasonably and satisfactorily.

Energy storage properties of PVDF terpolymer/PMMA blends

Dielectrics can be used to store electric energy in capacitors and high-energy density of the materials is desirable to reduce the size or weight of capacitors.To improve the energy storage properties of poly(vinylidene fluoride–trifluoroethylene–chlorofluoroethylene)[P(VDF–TrFE–CFE)]terpolymer,P(VDF–TrFE–CFE)/poly(methyl methacrylate)(PMMA)blends were investigated in this study.By adding a small amount of PMMA into PVDF terpolymer(<5 wt%),the dielectric breakdown field of the blends can be improved as a result of the enhancement of elastic modulus of the blends.For the blends with<2.5 wt%PMMA,though their dielectric properties are reduced,under the same electric field,the energy density of the blends is almost the same as that of PVDF terpolymer.Consequently,the energy storage performance of the terpolymer can be improved by blending with a small amount of PMMA.

Unrecognized role of humic acid as a reductant in accelerating fluoroquinolones oxidation by aqueous permanganate

A great concern has been raised regarding the issue of fluoroquinolones(FQs)in the environment.In this work,the transformation of FQs by commonly used oxidant permanganate(Mn(VII))in the absence and presence of humic acid(HA),ubiquitously existing in aquatic environments,was systematically investigated.Here,the catalytic role of in-situ formed MnO;on Mn(VII)oxidation of FQs depending on solution pH and co-existing substrates was firstly reported.It was interestingly found that HA could appreciably accelerate FQs degradation by Mn(VII)at environmentally relevant pH.HA as a reductant in accelerating FQs by Mn(VII)oxidation was distinctly elucidated for the first time,where MnO;in situ formed from the reduction of Mn(VII)by HA served as a catalyst.Similar products were observed in the presence versus absence of HA.Considering that the accelerating role of HA was related to its reducing ability,an activation method based on Mn(VII)and reductant(i.e.,Fe(II),Mn(II)and(bi)sulfite)was proposed,which exhibited considerable potential for application in the treatment of FQs contaminated water.

Effect of inlet rotating swirl on endwall film cooling for two representative hole arrangements

The swirl generator is widely used in lean-burn combustor to guarantee flame stability and reduce NOxemissions. Thus, the non-uniformities induced by the swirler would affect and damage film-cooling effectiveness on the turbine components, even blow-off coolant coverage, to some certain extent. The arrangement of film-cooling holes was normally designed to be perpendicular to the axial direction and in standard straight row. In this work we experimentally studied the effects of inlet swirl and mass flow ratio on traditional film cooling holes arrangement and a new arrangement pattern whose holes are located along the isobars. Results indicated that the swirl perturbation would damage film coverage. The film-cooling effect of endwall on which the holes are along the isobars, is invariably more promising than that of endwall on which hole arrangement is perpendicular to axial with the same mass flow of coolant, whether the inlet conditions is uniform or not.

Stabilization/solidification mechanisms of tin tailings and fuming slag-based geopolymers for different heavy metals

Tin mine tailings (TMT) and fuming slag (FS) contain many heavy metals (As, Cr, Cu, Zn and Mn) that cause severe pollution to the environment. Herein, geopolymers were prepared using TMT, FS and flue gas desulfurization gypsum (FGDG) to immobilize heavy metals, and their compressive strength and heavy metal leaching toxicity were investigated. It was first determined that T4F5 (TMT:FS = 4:5) sample exhibited the highest compressive strength (7.83 MPa). T4F5 achieved 95% immobilization efficiency for As and Cr, and nearly 100% for Cu, Zn and Mn, showing good immobilization performance. A series of characterization analyses showed that heavy metal cations can balance the charge in the geopolymer and replace Al in the geopolymer structure to form covalent bonds. In addition, about 2%-20% of heavy metal Fe was immobilized in hydration products, heavy metal hydroxides and non-bridging Si-O and Al-O coordination with silica-aluminate matrices. AsO33- was oxidized into AsO43-, which may form Ca-As or Fe-As precipitates. Cr2O72- was converted to CrO42- under alkaline environment and then combined with OH- to form Cr(OH)3 precipitates. Mn2+ may react directly with dissolved silicate to form Mn2SiO4 and also form Mn(OH)2 precipitates. The unstable Mn(OH)2 can be further oxidized to MnO2. The heavy metal cations were immobilized in the silicoaluminate lattice, while the anions tended to form insoluble precipitates. These results may benefit the industry and government for better handling of TMT, FS and solid wastes containing the abovementioned five heavy metals.
