Cell-based technologies are used as a therapeutic strategy in spinal cord injury(SCI). mesenchymal stem cells(mSCs), which secrete various neurotrophic factors and cytokines, have immunomodulatory, anti-apoptotic and anti-inflammatory effects, modulate reactivity/phenotype of astrocytes and the microglia, thereby promoting neuroregeneration seem to be the most promising. The therapeutic effect of mSCs is due to a paracrine mechanism of their action, therefore the survival of mSCs and their secretory phenotype is of particular importance. Nevertheless, these data are not always reported in efficacy studies of mSC therapy in SCI. Here, we provide a review with summaries of preclinical trials data evaluating the efficacy of mSCs in animal models of SCI. Based on the data collected, we have tried(1) to establish the behavior of mSCs after transplantation in SCI with an evaluation of cell survival, migration potential, distribution in the area of injured and intact tissue and possible differentiation;(2) to determine the effects mSCs on neuronal microenvironment and correlate them with the efficacy of functional recovery in SCI;(3) to ascertain the conditions under which mSCs demonstrate their best survival and greatest efficacy.

AN ADAPTIVE FAST INTERFACE TRACKING mETHoD

An adaptive numerical scheme is developed for the propagation of an interface in a velocity field based on the fast interface tracking method proposed in [2]. A multiresolution stategy to represent the interface instead of point values, allows local grid refinement while controlling the approximation error on the interface. For time integration, we use an explicit Runge-Kutta scheme of second-order with a multiseale time step, which takes longer time steps for finer spatial scales. The implementation of the algorithm uses a dynamic tree data structure to represent data in the computer memory. We briefly review first the main algorithm, describe the essential data structures, highlight the adaptive scheme, and illustrate the computational efficiency by some numerical examples.

Temperature regime of mountain permafrost in the Russian Altai mountains

This study presents the long-term temperature monitoring in the Russian Altai mountains. In contrast to the mongolian and Chinese parts, the modern temperature regime of the Russian Altai remains unclear. The complexity of a comprehensive understanding of permafrost conditions in the Russian Altai is related to the high dissection of the terrain, the paucity of the latest observational data, and the sparse population of permafrost areas. The general objective of this study is to determine the temperature regime on the surface,in the active layer, and in the zero annual amplitude(ZAA) layer, based on the known patterns of permafrost distribution in the region. Using automatic measuring equipment(loggers), we obtained information on the temperature of frozen and thawed ground within the altitudes from 1484 to 2879 m a. s. l. during the period from 2014 to *** array of 15 loggers determined the temperature regime of bare and vegetated areas within watersheds,slopes, and valleys. N-factor parameters and surface temperature are similar to those in the mongolian Altai, but the mean annual ground temperature at the depth of 1 m has a wide range of fluctuations(more than 32℃) based on research results, and we allocated it into three groups based on altitudinal zonality. Snow cover has a strong influence on the temperature regime, but the determination of the fine-scale variability requires additional *** temperature regime during the observation period remained stable, but continued monitoring allows a more detailed assessment of the response to climatic changes.

Previous study has shown that during zygomorphic development in garden pea （Pisum sativum L.）, the organ internal （IN） asymmetry of lateral and ventral petals was regulated by a genetic locus, SYmmETRIC PETAL 1 （SYP1）, while the dorsoventral （DV） asymmetry was determined by two CYC-like TCP genes or the PsCYC genes, KEELED WINGS （K） and LoBED STANDARD 1 （LST1）. In this study, two novel loci, ELEPHANT EAR-LIKE LEAF 1 （ELE1） and ELE2 were characterized. These mutants exhibit a similar defect of IN asymmetry as syp1 in lateral and ventral petals, but also display pleiotropic effects of enlarged organ size. Genetic analysis showed that ELE1 and ELE2 were involved in same genetic pathway and the enlarged size of petals but not compound leaves in e/e2 was suppressed by introducing k and Ist1, indicating that the enlargement of dorsal petal in e/e2 requires the activities of K and LST1. An experimental framework of comparative genomic mapping approach was set up to map and clone LjELE1 locus in Lotus japonicus. Cloning the ELE1 gene will shed light on the underlying molecular mechanism during zygomorphic development and further provide the molecular basis for genetic improvement on legume crops.

The liver is a unique parenchymal organ with a regenerative capacity allowing it to restore up to 70%of its *** knowledge of this phenomenon dates back to Greek mythology(the story of Prometheus),many aspects of liver regeneration are still not understood.A variety of different factors,including inflammatory cytokines,growth factors,and bile acids,promote liver regeneration and control the final size of the organ during typical regeneration,which is performed by mature hepatocytes,and during alternative regeneration,which is performed by recently identified resident stem cells called“hepatic progenitor cells”.Hepatic progenitor cells drive liver regeneration when hepatocytes are unable to restore the liver mass,such as in cases of chronic injury or excessive acute *** liver maintenance,the body mass ratio is essential for homeostasis because the liver has numerous functions;therefore,a greater understanding of this process will lead to better control of liver injuries,improved transplantation of small grafts and the discovery of new methods for the treatment of liver *** current review sheds light on the key molecular pathways and cells involved in typical and progenitor-dependent liver mass regeneration after various acute or chronic *** studies and a better understanding of liver regeneration will lead to the development of new therapeutic methods for liver diseases.

Is there a role for resection of oligometastatic disease in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma?

The development of high-performance non-precious metal-based robust bifunctional electrocatalyst for both hydrogen evolution reaction(HER) and oxygen evolution reactions(oER) in alkaline media is essential for the electrochemical overall water splitting technologies. Herein, we demonstrate that the HER/oER performance of Co Se_(2)can be significantly enhanced by tuning the 3d-orbital electron filling degree through mo doping. Both density functional theory(DFT) calculations and experimental results imply that the doping of mo with higher proportion of the unoccupied d-orbital(P_(un)) could not only serve as the active center for water adsorption to enhance the water molecule activation, but also modulate the electronic structures of Co metal center leading to the optimized adsorption strength of*H. As expected, the obtained mo-Co Se_(2)exhibits a remarkable bifunctional performance with overpotential of only 85 m V for HER and 245 m V for oER to achieve the current density of 10 m A/cm^(2)in alkaline *** work will provide a valuable insight to design highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst towards HER and oER.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)is the most common chronic liver disease,leading to fibrosis,cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma and also associated with increased cardiovascular disease *** pathogenesis of NAFLD is not fully understood,although NAFLD is thought to be a hepatic form of metabolic *** is an increasing understanding of the role of microbiota disturbances in NAFLD pathogenesis,and as with many other conditions affecting the microbiota,NAFLD may be a novel risk factor for Clostridioides difficile(***)colonization(CDC)and *** infection(CDI).CDI is an emerging nosocomial disease,and community-acquired cases of infection are growing,probably due to an increase in CDC *** association of NAFLD with CDI has been shown in only 4 studies to date,three of which included less than 1000 patients,although the frequency of NAFLD in these studies was observed in almost 20%of the total patient *** data revealed that NAFLD is a risk factor for CDI development and,moreover,is a risk factor for intestinal complications of *** studies are needed to investigate this association and move forward CDC and CDI screening efforts for this group of patients.

Crystal structure prediction at finite temperatures

Crystal structure prediction is a central problem of crystallography and materials science, which until mid-2000s was consideredintractable. Several methods, based on either energy landscape exploration or, more commonly, global optimization, largely solvedthis problem and enabled fully non-empirical computational materials discovery. A major shortcoming is that, to avoid expensivecalculations of the entropy, crystal structure prediction was done at zero Kelvin, reducing to the search for the global minimum ofthe enthalpy rather than the free energy. As a consequence, high-temperature phases (especially those which are not quenchableto zero temperature) could be missed. Here we develop an accurate and affordable solution, enabling crystal structure prediction atfinite temperatures. Structure relaxation and fully anharmonic free energy calculations are done by molecular dynamics with aforcefield (which can be anything from a parametric forcefield for simpler cases to a trained on-the-fly machine learning interatomicpotential), the errors of which are corrected using thermodynamic perturbation theory to yield accurate results with full ab initioaccuracy. We illustrate this method by applications to metals (probing the P–T phase diagram of Al and Fe), a refractory covalentsolid (WB), an Earth-forming silicate mgSio_(3) (at pressures and temperatures of the Earth’s lower mantle), and ceramic oxide Hfo_(2).
