Danhong Huayu Koufuye combined with metformin attenuated diabetic retinopathy in Zucker diabetic fatty rats

AIM: To evaluate effects of Danhong Huayu Koufuye (DHK, a Chinese medicinal formulae) alone or combined with metformin on diabetic retinopathy (DR) in Zucker diabetic fatty (ZDF) rats, an animal model of obese type -2 diabetes, and then to investigate the mechanisms. METHODS: ZDF (fa/fa) rats were administered with vehicle (distilled water), metformin, DHK, and DHK plus metformin. Electrophysiological and histological analysis were applied to evaluated effects of DHK alone or combined with metformin on DR. The levels of fasting blood glucose (FBG) and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in blood were measured to evaluate the antihyperglycemic activity of DHK. Furthermore, levels of nitric oxide (NO), malondialdehyde (MDA) and activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) in serum were measured to study effects of DHK on oxidative stress in ZDF rats. In addition, body weight, lipidic indexes and insulin level were also assessed. RESULTS: DHK combined with metformin significantly reversed the prolongation of latency times of flash electroretinogram (FERG) and oscillatory potentials (OPs) in diabetic rats. Furthermore, DHK alone or combined with metformin showed a remarkable suppression of retinal neovascularization and amelioration of retinal internal limiting membrane morphology. Moreover, DHK alone or plus metformin reduced FBG (P<0.05), HbA1c 1094 (P<0.01) and MDA (P<0.01) levels in diabetic rats. In addition, reductions in levels of triglycerides (TG) (P<0.01) and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) (P<0.01 and P<0.05, respectively) were also observed in diabetic rats treated with DHK alone or plus metformin. CONCLUSION: DHK in combination with metformin had a preventive and therapeutic effect on DR in type-2 diabetic rats, and the possible mechanisms may be alleviating hyperglycemia, reducing oxidative stress and improving lipid metabolism.

AIM:To investigate the effects of naringenin eye drops on N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU)-induced photoreceptor cell death in ***:Photoreceptor cell death was induced by single intraperitoneal injection of MNU(60 mg/kg)in *** eyes of all animals were instilled with one drop of vehicle,0.5% or 1.0% naringenin eye drops three times per day from 7d before to 17d after MNU *** of naringenin on MNU-induced photoreceptor cell death were evaluated by electrophysiological and histological ***:Flash electroretinography (FERG)and oscillatory potentials (OPs) recordings showed that the vehicle control group had remarkable reduction of amplitudes and prolongation of latency *** and OPs responses were significantly reversed in MNUinduced rats treated with 0.5%or 1.0% naringenin eye drops compared with the vehicle *** retinal morphological results showed that naringenin dosedependently preserved the outer nuclear layer,outer retina and total ***:These results indicate that topical treatment with naringenin eye drops prevented retinal neurons from MNU-induced structural and functional damages.

Shear bands in metallic materials have been reported to be catastrophic because they normally lead to non-uniform plastic deformation. Ductility of laminated metallic composites deteriorates with increasing processing strain, particularly for those having hexagonal-close-packed(hcp) constituents due to inadequate slip systems and consequently prominent shear banding. Here, we propose a design strategy that counterintuitively tolerates the bands with localized strains, i.e. the shear banded laminar(SBL) structure, which promotes dislocation activation in hcp metals and renders unprecedented strengthductility combination in hcp-metal-based composites fabricated by accumulative roll bonding(ARB). The SBL structure is characterized with one soft hcp metal constrained by adjacent hard metal in which dislocations have been accumulated near the bimetal interfaces. High-energy X-ray diffraction astonishingly reveals that more than 90% of dislocations are non-basal in Ti layers of the SBL Ti/Nb composite processed by eight ARB cycles. Moreover, dislocations occupy a high fraction of ~30%, promoting further cross slip. The unique stress field tailored by both shear banding and heterophase interface-mediated deformation accommodation triggers important slip. This SBL design is of significance for developing hcp-based laminates and other heterostructured materials with high performances.

Pedunculated hepatocellular carcinoma and splenic metastasis

Only a few cases of pedunculated hepatocellular carcinoma (P-HCC) have been reported in the literature. The common sites of extrahepatic metastases in patients with HCC are the lungs, regional lymph nodes, kidney, bone marrow and adrenals. Metastasis to spleen is mostly via hematogenous metastasis, direct metastasis to spleen was very rare. We report a case of P-HCC presenting as a left upper abdominal lesions which involved the spleen that was actually a P-HCC with splenic metastasis. This case is unique as P-HCC directly involved the spleen which is not via hematogenous metastasis.

Objective:To observe the clinical efficacy of acupuncture for Meige’s syndrome Ⅱ.Methods:Fourteen patients of Meige’s syndrome Ⅱ were treated with *** acupoints included bilateral Tāichōng(太冲LR3),Sānyīnjiāo(三阴交SP6),Tāixī(太溪KI3),dance tremor control area of scalp acupuncture(舞蹈震颤控制区),Yángbái(阳白GB14),Sīzhúkōng(丝竹空TE23),Yíngxiāng(迎香LI20),Dìcāng(地仓ST4),Jiāchē(颊车ST6) and Xiàguān(下关ST7),and the needle retention continued for 40 *** treatment was applied once a day,and there was a 5-day treatment and a 2-day rest every *** course of treatment included a week,and there were 4 courses of treatment in *** treatment,the clinical efficacy of the patients was ***:4 cases were cured,9 cases were effective,1 case was ineffective,and the effective rate was 92.9%.Conclusions:Acupuncture had a satisfactory clinical therapeutic effect on patients of Meige’s syndrome Ⅱ.

BACKGROUND Millions of people have died of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)due to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-Co V-2)infection,and retrospective studies of the disease in local regions are *** To characterize the epidemiological features and dynamic changes in blood biochemical indices for SARS-Co V-2-infected patients in Hebi,a representative city with a large floating population in North *** From January 25 to February 10,2020,the clinical data of patients who tested positive for SARS-Co V-2 by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction in Hebi city(China)were evaluated at admission,and laboratory data for hematologic parameters,inflammatory indices,coagulation function indices,liver function indices,blood lipid indices,renal function indices,myocardial enzyme activities and five blood biochemical markers of immunity were evaluated at admission,upon hospitalization and before *** Sixteen confirmed COVID-19 patients developed pneumonia but were cured after adequate *** and fatigue were the common *** most common laboratory abnormalities of patients at admission were leukopenia,eosinopenia,decreased percentage of eosinophils,elevated high sensitivity C-reactive protein and fibrinogen levels,hypoalbuminemia,mildly increased aspartate transferase activity and levels of bilirubin,and increased levels ofβ***,aggravated liver dysfunction was detected in most patients,which may be partially attributed to virus infection as well as medicinal *** This study provides several potential diagnostic markers and dynamic biochemical indices of disease progression to better prevent,diagnose and treat COVID-19 infection.

Dear Editor, Benign prostatic hyperplasia （BPH） is the most common genitourinary tract disease in elderly *** two-micron laser combines the advantages of efficient resection and rapid vaporization, resulting in high-performance resection and excellent hemostasis in resection of the prostate adenoma, which makes it an effective and promising modality in BPH treatment. However, severe edema and necrosis of the remaining prostatic tissue after vaporesection of the prostatic adenoma may cause severe irritative and/or obstructive symptoms and may even result in the need for a second operation. Rapid wound re-epithelialization in the prostatic urethra can, however, reduce the incidence of postoperative complications after transurethral resection of the prostate （TURP）.

Hyperbranched aromatic polymers were prepared by Friedel-Crafts reaction with Lewis acid, AlCl3 and ZnCl2, as the catalysts. In this work, hyperbranched polybenzyl (PB) and poly(methylene)naphthalene (PN) were synthesized and characterized by H-1-NMR and GPC. In addition, their florescence properties were measured with steady-state florescence spectra in THF and ethylene dichloride. The quantum yields of polybenzyl and poly(methylene)naphthalene in ethylene dichloride are much larger than those in THE.

The role of 5-HT_7 Receptor in the pathogenesis of IBS

Objective：To investigate the role of 5-HT7 receptor in the pathogenesis of irritable bowel syndrome（IBS）. Methods：Rat model of D-IBS was established by intracolonic instillation of acetic acid and restraint stress; Rat model of C-IBS was established by stomach irrigated with 0-4℃ cool water daily for 14 d. The content and distribution of 5-HT7 receptor at the brain and bowel was examined by immunohistochemistry and the expression of 5-HT7 receptor mRNA was detected by fluorescence quantitative RT-PCR（Real-time PCR）. Results：Immunocytochemistry result showed the 5-HT7 rceptor positive staining at hippocampus and hypothalamus of both C-IBS and D-IBS group was stronger than that of control group（P 〈 0.01）. The 5-HT7R expression at ileum, proximate colon, distal colon of C-IBS group was significantly stronger than that of control group（P 〈 0.05）. Realtime-PCR analysis results showed the expression level of 5-HT7 receptor at hippocampus and hypothalamus of both C-IBS and D-IBS group was increased than that of control group（P〈 0.05）. At proximal and distal colon of C-IBS group, the 5-HT7 receptor mRNA expression was increased compared with control group（P〈 0.05）. Conclusion：The up-regulated expression of 5-HT7 receptor at brain and colon may play an important role in the pathogenesis of C-IBS.

Impact of the interval after endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy on the outcomes of intraocular surgery: a 4-year retrospective study

Background:Patients with dacryocystitis should be treated for their infection by endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy(EN-DCR)before any intraocular ***,there is no unified standard for the specific time interval between the two *** study aimed to determine the appropriate interval for intraocular surgery in patients with previous EN-DCR for chronic ***:The medical files of all patients who underwent intraocular surgery after EN-DCR surgery in our hospital from 2016 to 2019 were *** EN-DCR data of patients undergoing intraocular surgery at different time intervals and the incidence of endophthalmitis after intraocular surgery were ***:A total of 116 patients(92 females and 24 males,mean age 64.06±7.78 years)underwent EN-DCR and intraocular surgery met the inclusion *** interval between EN-DCR and intraocular surgery varied from 5-475 *** number of patients undergoing cataract surgery after EN-DCR is the largest(75,64.7%).All patients(100%)who had previously undergone EN-DCR did not develop endophthalmitis infection after intraocular surgery at a follow-up of 12 ***:For patients with dacryocystitis who have undergone EN-DCR surgery,there is no time limit when choosing the timing of intraocular *** patients requiring intraocular surgery,operation can be arranged as soon as possible to solve their problems as long as the patients had patency on lacrimal passage irrigation and no secretions.
