Advanced materials with superior comprehensive mechanical properties are strongly desired,but it has long been a challenge to achieve high ductility in high-strength ***,we proposed a new V 0.5 Cr 0.5 CoNi medium-entropy alloy(MEA)with a face-centered cubic/hexagonal close-packed(FCC/HCP)dual-phase ultrafine-grained(UFG)architecture containing stacking faults(SFs)and local chemical order(LCO)in HCP solid solution,to obtain an ultrahigh yield strength of 1476 MPa and uniform elongation of 13.2%at ambient *** ultrahigh yield strength originates mainly from fine grain strength-ening of the UFG FCC matrix and HCP second-phase strengthening assisted by the SFs and LCO inside,whereas the large ductility correlates to the superior ability of the UFG FCC matrix to storage disloca-tions and the function of deformation-induced SFs in the vicinity of the FCC/HCP boundary to eliminate the stress *** work provides new guidance by engineering novel composition and stable UFG structure for upgrading the mechanical properties of metallic materials.

Exploring the effects of sowing date and ecological points on the yield of semi-winter wheat is of great *** study aims to reveal the effects of sowing date and ecological points on the climate resources associated with wheat yield in the Rice–Wheat Rotation *** six sowing dates,the experiments were carried out in Donghai and Jianhu counties,Jiangsu Province,China using two semi-winter wheat varieties as the objects of this *** basic seedlings of the first sowing date (S1) were planted at 300×10^(4)plants ha^(-1),which was increased by 10%for each of the delayed sowing dates (S2–S6).The results showed that the delay of sowing date decreased the number of days,the effective accumulated temperature and the cumulative solar radiation in the whole growth *** yields of S1 were higher than those of S2 to S6 by 0.22–0.31,0.5–0.78,0.86–0.98,1.14–1.38,and 1.36–1.59 t ha^(–1),*** a given sowing date,the growth days increased as the ecological point was moved north,while both mean daily temperature and effective accumulative temperature decreased,but the cumulative radiation *** a result,the yields at Donghai County were 0.01–0.39 t ha–1lower than those of Jianhu County for the six sowing *** effective accumulative temperature and cumulative radiation both had significant positive correlations with *** average temperature was significantly negatively correlated with the *** decrease in grain yield was mainly due to the declines in grains per spike and 1 000-grain weight caused by the increase in the daily temperature and the decrease in the effective accumulative temperature.

Optimizing the application of a novel harvest aid to improve the quality of mechanically harvested cotton in the North China Plain

Defoliation is an indispensable step in cotton production with mechanical harvesting,especially in the North China Plain(NCP)where mechanical harvesting is limited by a large proportion of green leaves and unopened bolls at harvest time due to insufficient thermal *** is essential to quantify the optimal use of defoliation products while minimizing yield and quality loss in *** objective of this study was to test the effect of a new defoliant Xinsaili(XSL,a compound of 10% thidiazuron and 40% ethephon)on the spatial distribution of cotton leaves and bolls,yield and quality in the *** were four treatments:XSL 1800 m L ha^(-1),XSL 2700 m L ha^(-1),XSL splitted into two equal applications(1350 m L ha^(-1) for each),and XSL-free(water)*** experiments were conducted in Hebei,China in *** the defoliant treatments did not significantly affect cotton yield and fiber quality compared with the water *** harvest time,the rate of open bolls under XSL 2700 m L ha^(-1) was 13.5% higher than that under XSL-free control,while the other two treatments showed no significant difference,across the two *** percentage of the three XSL treatments showed no difference,but they were on average 42.2% higher than that of XSL-free *** year-round effect of the defoliant XSL was significant,indicating that climate factors would affect its *** was concluded that the optimal dose of XSL in the NCP was 2700 m L ha^(-1),and it was unnecessary to split it into two *** results would promote cotton mechanical harvesting and reduce the labor cost of cotton production in China.

Micropollutant removal and disinfection byproduct control by sequential peroxymonosulfate-UV treatment in water: A case study with sulfamethoxazole

UV/peroxymonosulfate(UV/PMS) advanced oxidation process has attracted significant attention for removal of micropollutants in water. However, during practical water treatment applications, the PMS treatment must be performed before the UV treatment to achieve full contact. In this study, sulfamethoxazole(SMX) was selected as the target micropollutant. Four different operational approaches, including UV alone, PMS alone, simultaneous UV/PMS and sequential PMS-UV, were compared for their differences in SMX removal and disinfection by-product(DBP) formation potentials during chlorine-driven disinfection. Among the four approaches, UV/PMS and PMS-UV achieved over 90% removal efficiencies for SMX without substantial differences. For raw water, the trichloronitromethane(TCNM) formation potential after treatment with PMS-UV was lower than that after UV/PMS treatment. The time interval over which the PMS-UV process was conducted had little effect on the final removal efficiency for SMX. However, a brief(5 min) pre-PMS treatment significantly reduced the TCNM formation potential and the genotoxicity from DBPs. The formation risk for TCNM during chlorination increased markedly with increasing PMS dosages, and the appropriate dosage under these experimental conditions was suggested to be 0.5–1.0 mmol/L. Under alkaline conditions, PMS-UV treatment can enhance SMX degradation as well as dramatically reduced the formation potentials for haloketones, haloacetonitriles and halonitromethanes. This study suggests that proper optimization of UV/PMS processes can remove SMX and reduce its DBP formation.

Paired associative stimulation improves synaptic plasticity and functional outcomes after cerebral ischemia

Paired associative stimulation is a relatively new non-invasive brain stimulation technique that combines transcranial magnetic stimulation and peripheral nerve stimulation. The effects of paired associative stimulation on the excitability of the cerebral cortex can vary according to the time interval between the transcranial magnetic stimulation and peripheral nerve stimulation. We established a model of cerebral ischemia in rats via transient middle cerebral artery occlusion. We administered paired associative stimulation with a frequency of 0.05 Hz 90 times over 4 weeks. We then evaluated spatial learning and memory using the Morris water maze. Changes in the cerebral ultra-structure and synaptic plasticity were assessed via transmission electron microscopy and a 64-channel multi-electrode array. We measured mRNA and protein expression levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor and N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor 1 in the hippocampus using a real-time polymerase chain reaction and western blot assay. Paired associative stimulation treatment significantly improved learning and memory in rats subjected to cerebral ischemia. The ultra-structures of synapses in the CA1 area of the hippocampus in rats subjected to cerebral ischemia were restored by paired associative stimulation. Long-term potentiation at synapses in the CA3 and CA1 regions of the hippocampus was enhanced as well. The protein and mRNA expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor and N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor 1 increased after paired associative stimulation treatment. These data indicate that paired associative stimulation can protect cog-nition after cerebral ischemia. The observed effect may be mediated by increases in the mRNA and protein expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor and N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor 1, and by enhanced synaptic plasticity in the CA1 area of the hippocampus.
