What leads to variations in the results of life-cycle energy assessment?An evidence-based framework for residential buildings

Residential buildings are one of the major contributors to climate change due to their significant impacts on global energy ***,most countries have introduced regulations to minimize energy use in residential *** date,the focus of these regulations has mainly been on operational energy while excluding embodied *** recent years,extensive studies have highlighted the necessity of minimizing both embodied energy and operational energy by applying the life-cycle energy assessment(LCEA)***,the absence of a standardized framework and calculation methodology for the analysis of embodied energy has reportedly led to variations in the LCEA *** research endeavoured to explore the causes of variations,with a limited focus on calculating embodied *** the undertaken attempts,there is still a need to investigate the key parameters causing variations in LCEA results by examining methodological approaches of the current studies toward quantifications of embodied and operational *** paper aims to address three primary questions:‘what is the current trend of methodological approach for applying LCEA in residential buildings?’;‘what are the key parameters causing variations in LCEA results?’;and‘how can the continued variations in the application of LCEA in residential buildings be overcome?’.To this end,40 LCEA studies representing 157 cases of residential buildings across 16 countries have been critically *** findings reveal four principal categories of parameters that potentially contribute to the varying results of LCEAs:system boundary definition,calculation methods,geographical context,and interpretation of *** paper also proposes a conceptual framework to minimize variations in LCEA studies by standardizing the process of conducting LCEAs.

Fast and accurate surface normal integration on non-rectangular domains

The integration of surface normals for the purpose of computing the shape of a surface in 3D space is a classic problem in computer vision. However,even nowadays it is still a challenging task to devise a method that is flexible enough to work on non-trivial computational domains with high accuracy, robustness,and computational efficiency. By uniting a classic approach for surface normal integration with modern computational techniques, we construct a solver that fulfils these requirements. Building upon the Poisson integration model, we use an iterative Krylov subspace solver as a core step in tackling the task. While such a method can be very efficient, it may only show its full potential when combined with suitable numerical preconditioning and problem-specific initialisation. We perform a thorough numerical study in order to identify an appropriate preconditioner for this *** provide suitable initialisation, we compute this initial state using a recently developed fast marching integrator. Detailed numerical experiments illustrate the benefits of this novel combination. In addition, we show on real-world photometric stereo datasets that the developed numerical framework is flexible enough to tackle modern computer vision applications.

Effect of water salinity on oil/brine interfacial behaviour during low salinity waterflooding: A mechanistic study

In recent years,controlling the salinity and composition of the injected water has become an emerging enhanced oil recovery(EOR)technique,often described as low salinity(LS)*** work is done with the intention to contribute to the ongoing discussions about LS waterflooding mechanism(s).For this purpose,a series of different experiments were *** first,the effect of salinity on the interfacial tension(IFT)and the contact angle was evaluated with a crude oil *** to achieve more accurate results in observing oil/water interface,similar IFT experiments were also carried out on a synthetic oil containing ***,microscopic visualization using glass micromodel was performed on the interface of the synthetic oil sample and *** brine solutions including Sea Water(SW),it's dilutions and formation water(FW)were used for various ***,to investigate the presented mechanism by other authors,a series of Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy(ESEM)analysis on the synthetic oil was carried out to understand better the phase behaviour after contacting both synthetic oil and water phases from the micromodel *** on the existing mechanism,there exists an optimal concentration beyond which dilution is no longer an effective process.

A review on the best practices in concrete pavement design and materials in wet-freeze climates similar to Michigan

The research presented in this paper aims to identify best practices of design and materials for concrete pavements in wet-freeze climates similar to the Michigan State. For the purposes of this paper, a best practice is a procedure that has been shown by field-validated research or experience to produce improved results and that is established or proposed as a standard suitable for widespread implementation. The local wet-freeze climate makes the requirements for Michigan's pavement system different from many other regions. Wetfreeze climates can result in various concrete pavement distress mechanisms such as thermally-induced cracking, freeze-thaw deterioration, accelerated cracking due to loss of support, frost heave, and material degradation. Therefore, appropriate procedures for design and material selection need to be selected to withstand high precipitation and freezing winter temperatures. Failure to take into account the climatic conditions may lead to inadequate or reduced pavement performance. However, utilizing appropriate techniques and materials could potentially improve the quality and increase the service life of the concrete pavement. Three design methods and five materials have been identified, and examples of their successful performance in wet-freeze climates are provided. In addition, the reasons that give them the superior performance in wet-freeze climates are discussed in detail.

Tioxolone niosomes exert antileishmanial effects on Leishmania tropica by promoting promastigote apoptosis and immunomodulation

Objective: To explore the antileishmanial effect of tioxolone and its niosomal form against Leishmania tropica. Methods: Tioxolone niosomes were prepared by the hydration method and were evaluated for morphology, size, release study, and encapsulation efficiency. The cytotoxicity of tioxolone and its niosomal form was measured by MTT assay, leishmanicidal activity against promastigote and amastigote by MTT assay, apoptosis by flow cytometry, IL-12, IL-10 and metacaspase gene expression levels by q-PCR. Results: Span/Tween 40 and Span/Tween 60 niosomes had good physical stability as depicted in their size distribution curves and high encapsulation efficiency(>99%). The release profile of the entrapped compounds showed Fickian’s model of tioxolone delivery based on diffusion through lipid bilayers. With the IC50 value for amastigote as(24.5±2.1) μg/mL and selectivity index as 10.5, the Span/Tween 60 niosome(NT2) had a superior effect to other drugs. The CC50 value and IC50 of promastigote value for NT2 were(257.5±24.5) μg/mL and(164.8±20.6) μg/mL, respectively. The flow cytometric analysis showed that tioxolone and niosomal forms induced apoptosis of Leishmania tropica promastigotes in a dose-dependent manner. NT2 increased the expression level of IL-12 and metacaspase genes and decreased the expression level of the IL-10 ***: Niosomes of tioxolone play an immunomodulatory role in increasing Th1 cytokine profile and inhibiting the Th2 cytokine profile. It could be used for treatment of anthroponotic cutaneous leishmaniasis.

Microbiological and Histological Examinations of Endangered Neurergus kaiseri Tissues Displaying Red-leg Syndrome

Presence of the red leg syndrome （RLS） was documented through bacterial and histological examinations in the endangered Kaiser＇s mountain newt Neurergus kaiseri obtained from a pet shop. The individuals which were severely infected showed lethargy, appetite loss, weight loss, abdominal skin redness and skin ulcers on hind legs. This study reveals the presence of two bacteria causing RLS on the skin of captive AT. kaiseri including Proteus vulgaris and Bacillus cereus. Sections of skin in affected areas and internal organs were examined through standard histological procedures. Histologically, epidermal necrosis and ulcers, epidermal gland depletion, myositis and subcutaneous edema, gastric submucosal edema and hepatomegaly were seen. There were also correlations between the microbial infection and structural changes in tissues of Kaiser＇s mountain newt. The severity of the structural changes are related to the level of microbial infection in the target organs and could be sustained by the isolation of P. vulgaris and other pathogens. The presence of the infective bacterial population and their interaction on the skin of the newt may have changed the normal skin flora and facilitate the prevalence of other disease.

The Effects of Thermal Radiation and Viscous Dissipation on the Stagnation Point Flow of a Micropolar Fluid over a Permeable Stretching Sheet in the Presence of Porous Dissipation

In this paper,the effects of thermal radiation and viscous dissipation on the stagnation–point flow of a micropolar fluid over a permeable stretching sheet with suction and injection are analyzed and discussed.A suitable similarity transformation is used to convert the governing nonlinear partial differential equations into a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations,which are then solved numerically by a fourth–order Runge–Kutta *** is found that the linear fluid velocity decreases with the enhancement of the porosity,boundary,and suction ***,it increases with the micropolar and injection *** angular velocity grows with the boundary,porosity,and suction parameters,whereas it is reduced if the micropolar and injection parameters become *** is concluded that the thermal boundary layer extension increases with the injection parameter and decreases with the suction parameter.

The lower Cretaceous rock units of the Koppeh-Dagh Basin of northeastern Iran were investigated here in terms of biostratigraphy,depositional setting and geochemical analyses to find out if they,alike other parts of the world,are rich in *** this purpose,a stratigraphic framework is established using calcareous nannofossil and palynological elements.A nannoplankton zonation based on which subzones of the zones CC7–CC8 of Sissingh(1977)and their equivalent NC6–NC8 of Roth(1978)was established indicating a Late Barremian–Albian *** assemblages led us to establish the local palynozone of Odontochitina operculata.A dominantly marginal basin to a transitional zone between shelf and basin under a dysoxic–anoxic condition with low to moderate sedimentation rates coincided with a gradual sea level rise was introduced as the environment of deposition for the strata via interpretation of the palynological parameters and quantitative *** obtained data from Rock-Eval pyrolysis in compilation with palynofacies analysis reveals that the studied succession contains mainly gas-prone type III *** Spore Coloration Index(SCI)alongside with the Rock-Eval pyrolysis results(low values of HI and TOC)proves that these rock units locally produced natural gas during the time under consideration.

Simulation and experimental study of dynamic recrystallization process during friction stir vibration welding of magnesium alloys

A two-dimensional cellular automaton(CA)model was utilized to analyze the effect of mechanical vibration on microstructure evolution of AZ91 alloy during friction stir welding(FSW).The simulated results,namely grain topology,grain size distribution,average grain size,and also the dynamic recrystallization(DRX)fraction were compared with measured *** adequate comparability between FEM and experimental data shows that the CA method can be applied to the analysis of the microstructure progression during the friction stir welding of AZ91 *** is concluded that the dislocation density during the friction stir vibration welding(FSVW)is higher than that in the FSW process and the process of nucleation and grain growth is faster for samples during FSVW compared to *** grain size modification and DRX phenomenon with various vibration frequencies were also simulated in detail during *** is found that vibration makes nucleation start earlier and decreases the proportion of the incubation period and the percentage of recrystallization as vibration frequency improves.

Superelastic behavior of nanostructured Ti_(50)Ni_(48)Co_2 shape memory alloy with cold rolling processing

Effects of cold rolling followed by annealing on microstructural evolution and superelastic properties of the Ti50Ni48Co2 shape memory alloy were investigated. Results showed that during cold rolling, the alloy microstructure evolved through six basic stages including stress-induced martensite transformation and plastic deformation of martensite, deformation twinning, accumulation of dislocations along twin and variant boundaries in martensite, nanocrystallization, amorphization and reverse transformation of martensite to austenite. After annealing at 400 ℃ for 1 h, the amorphous phase formed in the cold-rolled specimens was completely crystallized and an entirely nanocrystalline structure was achieved. The value of stress level of the upper plateau in this nanocrystalline alloy was measured as high as 730 MPa which was significantly higher than that of the coarse-grained Ni50Ti50 and Ti50Ni48Co2 alloys. Moreover, the nanocrystalline Ti50Ni48Co2 alloy had a high damping capacity and considerable efficiency for energy storage.
