High-Throughput Screening of Nanoparticle-Stabilizing Ligands:Application to Preparing Antimicrobial Curcumin Nanoparticles by Antisolvent Precipitation

Water-dispersible curcumin nanoparticles were prepared by bottom-up antisolvent precipitation approach. A new high-throughput screening technique was developed for selecting appropriate ligands stabilizing the nanoparticles in aqueous medium and improving their performance. The initial set of twenty-eight potential stabilizing ligands was evaluated based on their capacity to improve curcumin dispersibility in aqueous medium. The performance of four promising ligands(amino acid proline, polyphenol tannic acid, polycation Polyquaternium 10, and neutral polymer polyvinylpyrrolidone) was tested in ultrasound-aided antisolvent precipitation trials. Using the selected stabilizing ligands diminished the average particle size from ca. 1,200 to 170–230 nm, reduced their dispersity, improved stability, and allowed reaching curcumin concentration of up to 1.4 m M in aqueous medium. Storage stability of the aqueous nanodispersions varied from 2 days to 2 weeks, depending on stabilizing ligand. Studying the effects of ionic strength and pH on size and f-potential of the particles suggested that electrostatic forces and hydrophobic interactions could be the major factors affecting their stability. The ligand-protected nanoparticles showed minimal inhibitory concentration of 400 or500 μM toward Escherichia coli. We suggest that the presented screening approach may be useful for preparing nanoparticles of various poorly water-soluble bioactive materials.

网室栽培的无花果由于光照不足所产生的着色问题可导致其商品性和营养品质的下降。本文通过高能氙灯发出的脉冲光（PL）处理无花果果实，研究其对于采后无花果“Brown Turkey”果实着色的促进作用。研究结果表明，对着色较差的无花果果实采用PL处理10～90S后，果实红色度增加，且存在剂量效应；但当处理超过300S时,促进作用不再增加。将果实避光贮藏在20℃条件下5d发现，经PL处理90～300S的果实果皮中的花青素含量比对照高20倍,且接近该品种的标准水平。各PL平行处理均可增加无花果果皮中的总酚含量，但这些酚类并非全部与花青素的合成有关，PL处理很可能也促进了一些其他功能的酚类化合物含量的积累。与PL处理相比,日光灯光照处理对于无花果果实着色的促进作用要小得多，经5h的日光灯光照处理所产生的增色作用与PL处理10～30S接近。综上所述，采后PL处理可作为补偿无花果果实由于光照不足所产生的着色问题的有效手段，在其他水果上可能也具有类似的作用效果。

Fold completeness of a system of root vectors of a system of unbounded polynomial operator pencils in Banach spaces.Ⅱ.Application

This paper is a continuation of the author＇s paper in 2009, where the abstract theory of fold com- pleteness in Banach spaces has been presented. Using obtained there abstract results, we consider now very general boundary value problems for ODEs and PDEs which poIynomially depend on the spectral parameter in both the equation and the boundary conditions. Moreover, equations and boundary conditions may con- rain abstract operators as well. So, we deal, generally, with integro-differential equations, functional-differential equations, nonlocal boundary conditions, multipoint boundary conditions, integro-differential boundary condi- tions. We prove n-fold completeness of a system of root functions of considered problems in the corresponding direct sum of Sobolev spaces in the Banach Lq-framework, in contrast to previously known results in the Hilbert L2-framework. Some concrete mechanical problems are also presented.

In this paper we study the connection between the metric projection operator PK ： B →K, where B is a reflexive Banach space with dual space B^＊ and K is a non-empty closed convex subset of B, and the generalized projection operators ∏K ： B → K and πK ： B^＊ → K. Among other features, our results essentially generalize existing results on strong convergence for T nonexpansive and asymptotically nonexpansive. The convergence and stability analysis is given for both self- and nonself-mappings.

Catheters coated with Zn-doped CuO nanoparticles delay the onset of catheter-associated urinary tract infections

Catheter-associated urinary tract infections （CAUTIs） are among the most common bacterial infections associated with medical devices. In the current study, the synthesis, coating, antibiofilm properties, and biocompatibility of urinary catheters coated with Zn-doped CuO （Zn0.12Cu0.880） nanoparticles （NPs） were examined. The doped NPs were synthesized and subsequently deposited on the catheter by the sonochemical method. The coated catheters displayed high antibiofilm activity and promising biocompatibility, as indicated by low in vitro cytotoxicity, negligible associated cytokine secretion, and absence of detectable irritation. The biocompatibility and ability of the Zn-doped CuO coating to inhibit biofilm formation were also evaluated in vivo using a rabbit model. Rabbits catheterized with uncoated catheters scored positive for CAUTI by day 4 of the experiment. In contrast, rabbits catheterized with Zn-doped CuO-coated catheters did not exhibit CAUTI until day 7 or remained completely uninfected for the whole duration of the 7-day experiment. Furthermore, the in vivo biocompatibility assays and examinations supported the biosafety of Zn-doped CuO-coated catheters. Taken together, these data highlight the potential of Zn-doped CuO nanocomposite as effective antibiofilm compound.

Soil-plant co-stimulation during forest vegetation restoration in a subtropical area of southern China

Background: Soil and vegetation have a direct impact on the process and direction of plant community succession, and determine the structure, function, and productivity of ecosystems. However, little is known about the synergistic influence of soil physicochemical properties and vegetation features on vegetation restoration. The aim of this study was to investigate the co-evolution of soil physicochemical properties and vegetation features in the process of vegetation restoration, and to distinguish the primary and secondary relationships between soil and vegetation in their collaborative effects on promoting vegetation restoration in a subtropical area of ***: Soil samples were collected to 40 cm in four distinct plant communities along a restoration gradient from herb(4–5 years), to shrub(11–12 years), to Pinus massoniana coniferous and broadleaved mixed forest(45–46 years), and to evergreen broadleaved forest(old growth forest). Measurements were taken of the soil physicochemical properties and Shannon–Wiener index(SD), diameter at breast height(DBH), height(H), and biomass. Principal component analysis, linear function analysis, and variation partitioning analysis were then performed to prioritize the relative importance of the leading factors affecting vegetation ***: Soil physicochemical properties and vegetation features showed a significant trend of improvement across the vegetation restoration gradient, reflected mainly in the high response rates of soil organic carbon(SOC)(140.76%), total nitrogen(TN)(222.48%), total phosphorus(TP)(59.54%), alkaline hydrolysis nitrogen(AN)(544.65%),available phosphorus(AP)(53.28%), species diversity(86.3%), biomass(2906.52%), DBH(128.11%), and H(596.97%).The soil properties(pH, SOC, TN, AN, and TP) and vegetation features(biomass, DBH, and H) had a clear coevolutionary relationship over the course of restoration. Phenological Stage, Plant Biomass, and Drought Stress Affect Microbial Biomass and Enzyme Activities in the Rhizosphere of Enteropogon macrostachyus

Indigenous grasses have been effectively used to rehabilitate degraded African drylands. Despite their success, studies examining their effects on soil bioindicators such as microbial biomass carbon(C) and enzyme activities are scarce. This study elucidates the effects of drought stress and phenological stages of a typical indigenous African grass, Enteropogon macrostachyus, on microbial biomass and enzyme activities(β-glucosidase, cellobiohydrolase, and chitinase) in the rhizosphere soil. Enteropogon macrostachyus was grown under controlled conditions. Drought stress(partial watering) was simulated during the last 10 d of plant growth, and data were compared with those from optimum moisture conditions. The rhizosphere soil was sampled after 40 d(seedling stage), 70 d(elongation stage), and 80 d(simulated drought stress). A high root:shoot ratio at seedling stage compared with elongation and reproduction stages demonstrated that E. macrostachyus invested more on root biomass in early development, to maximise the uptake of nutrients and water. Microbial biomass and enzyme activities increased with root biomass during plant growth. Ten-day drought at reproduction stage increased the microbial biomass and enzyme activities, accompanying a decrease in binding affinity and catalytic efficiency. In conclusion, drought stress controls soil organic matter decomposition and nutrient mobilization, as well as the competition between plant and microorganisms for nutrient uptake.
