It has been demonstrated that the olfactory bulb(OB)is the sole target for neuroblasts originated from the subventricular zone(SVZ).In order to explore the effects of the OB on the neurogenesis in the SVZ and rostral migratory stream(RMS)in adult mammals,a surgical removal of the OB was performed in the *** Nissl staining and immunobistochemistry for showing glial fibrillary acidic protein(GFAP),bromodeoxyuridine(BrdU),and polysialylated neural cell adhesion molecule(PSA-NCAM)were done in the brain tissue from adult SD rats in different survival times after removal of the OB and in the sham *** sections were observed under light-microscopy,and the Leica DM LA image analysis system Qwin software and SPSS statistic analysis software were used to estimate the cell number and *** addition,the ultrastructurai characteristics of the cells in the SVZ and RMS were observed under *** results showed that the cell number in the RMS increased after OB removal,and this was from an increase of PSA-NCAM- and GFAP-positive cells at a shorter time after the *** the postoperative delay,increased PSA-NCAM-positive cells became the main sources for accumulations of cells in the *** percentage of BrdU-positive cells decreased in the RMS at the longer survival and more apparently in the rostral part of the *** differentiated cells that were like mature neurons appeared in the RMS in the site of bulb *** results in present study suggest that the production and migration of the cells characterized with neuroblasts along the RMS,as well as the differentiation of those cells in the SVZ do not seem to be affected by OB removal,although the cellular proliferation is *** increase of the astrocytes after the surgical removal does not seem to be related with promotion of neurogenesis *** can be concluded that the OB is not apparently essential for neurogenesis in the SVZ.
