Morphometric Study of the Lumbar Spray in the African Black West Subject: Interest in Surgery. About a CT Scans of 170 Cases in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso)

Objective: Our study aimed at analyzing the morphometry of the lumbar spine at the CT scan and to specify its interest in spinal surgery. Methodology: This was a prospective study conducted from May 1, 2011 to July 31, 2011 in Ouagadougou. During this study, 170 patients aged 45.3 ± 12.5 years old with a sex ratio of 1.15 received a CT scan. The symptomatology was dominated by low back pain (60.6%) and lumbar osteoarthritis was the most common etiology (51.8%). The measurements were performed directly on axial and sagittal sections of the lumbar spine with measurement of the vertebral body, and pedicles. Results: The vertebral body increased forward from 24.9 mm in L1 to 26.7 mm in L5 and decreasing backwards from 26.6 mm in L1 to 23.4 mm in L5. The transverse diameter of the vertebral body ranged from 37 mm in L1 to 47.4 mm in L5 and the anteroposterior diameter of 27.6 mm in L1 to 33.5 mm in L5. The lumbar canal had an anteroposterior diameter that ranged from 15.9 mm in L1 to 15.5 mm in L5 and an interpedicular distance increasing from 21.54 mm in L1 to 28.42 mm in L5. The pedicle decreased in length from L1 (9.5 mm) to L5 (6.5 mm) while its width increased from 6.9 mm in L1 to 15.1 mm in L5. Its axis formed, with respect to the sagittal plane, an increasingly obtuse angle varying from 16.3 degrees in L1 to 29.1 degrees in L5 and with respect to the upper plate of the vertebral body, an increasingly acute angle (14, 2 degrees in L1 at 8.8 degrees in L5). Conclusion: The dimensions of the lumbar vertebrae in our series differ from those noted in Western populations in that they have a smaller vertebral body, a shorter, wider pedicle with an angle of inclination of the pedicle compared to the sagittal and horizontal planes more obtuse.

The Pouni area is made up of basalts belonging to the Boromo belt, lamprophyres and granitoids. These geological formations are similar to geological formations of the same type in other regions of the Palaeoproterozoic domain of the Man/Leo shield. This study, which focused on the petrographic and geochemical characteristics of these geological formations, led to the following main conclusions: The lamprophyres are basic plutonic rocks that cut through other geological formations. The basalt belongs to the northern part of the Borormo belt and is thought to be a relic of overthickened oceanic plateaus. There are two groups of granitoid rocks. The granodiorite has a geochemical signature close to that of Archean TTGs and is metaluminous in character. It has a low potassium content. The minor element and rare earth element spectra indicate that it could be derived from partial melting of basic magmatic rocks. Biotite granites are peraluminous and highly potassic. Minor element contents and rare earth spectra indicate that they could be derived from partial melting of felsic materials. Geotectonic diagrams show that the granitoids identified in the Pouni zone were emplaced in an active tectonic context, similar to that of present-day subduction zones.

Objectives: Sickle cell disease (SCD) has a varied clinical and biological expression depending on the hemoglobin phenotype: SSFA2, SFA2, SAFA2 and SC. Considering the antioxidant properties of the different haptoglobin phenotypes (Hp 1-1, Hp 2-1, Hp 2-2), it seemed relevant to know their influence on the morbidity of the different hemoglobin phenotype of SCD. Thus, the objective of this study was to identify associations between haptoglobin phenotype and morbidity of different SCD phenotypes. Methods: In a retrospective cross-sectional descriptive and analytical study, with a cohort of 170 black African carriers of hemoglobin S, in Ivory Coast, West Africa, hemoglobin and haptoglobin phenotypes were determined by electrophoretic methods. Results: The three major phenotypes of haptoglobin polymorphism were found in the SCD cohort: Hp 1-1 (24.1%), Hp 2-1 (56.5%), Hp 2-2 (19.4%). Vaso-occlusions were associated with haptoglobin phenotype Hp 1-1, (OR = 2.03;CI95% = [1.06 - 3.9];p Conclusions: Haptoglobin phenotype was associated to morbidity-adjusted hemoglobin phenotype. The study revealed a greater probability of a worse morbidity when the hemoglobin phenotype is homozygous. Unexpectedly, the worse morbidity is associated to Hp 1-1 haptoglobin phenotype, the most powerful antioxidant within the different haptoglobin phenotypes. Associations found were not systematic and need further studies to enlighten the determinism of SCD morbidity.

Valorization of Agricultural Waste: Theoretical Estimation and Experimental Biomethane Yield from Cashew Nut Hulls

Biomethane potential production from cashew nut hulls, an agricultural waste, was carried out using old and fresh hulls as substrates. Samples were taken from old hulls (around 8 years old) and fresh hulls produced in cashew scale transformation units at Bobo Dioulasso/Burkina Faso. Physicochemical parameters showed that cashew hulls can be a good candidate for anaerobic digestion. But high acidity, total phenols and lignin tenor could be a constraint for anaerobic bacteria. Theoretical biochemical methane potential showed high value of 666.937 CH4 L. (Kg VS)-1 and 526.206 CH4 L. (Kg VS)-1 for crushed fresh and powdered old hulls, respectively. Objective: The objective of our study was to study the surgical activities carried out in the gynecology-obstetrics department of the CHU-YO (Teaching Hospital Yalgado Ouédraogo) from January 1st 2015 to December 31st, 2015. Patients and Methods: This dealt with a cross-cutting descriptive and analytic study with retrospective data collection. Our study has included the female patients who underwent surgery in the operating room and whose medical records were usable. Results: 45% of female patients admitted in the concerned department underwent a surgery. The average age of patients was estimated at 28.02 years ±7 years with extremes of 13 years and 80 years. Obstetrical surgery has involved 89.9% of cases. Female patients have received a loco-regional anesthesia in 92.7% of cases. Emergency surgical operations accounted for 88.8% and caesarean section was the main surgical operation carried out in 87.1% of cases. The mortality rate of the overall surgical operations was 1.04%. Conclusion: A better availability of labile blood products is more likely to reduce the mortality rate of surgical operations under the threshold of 1%.

Application of Machine Learning Methods on Climate Data and Commercial Microwave Link Attenuations for Estimating Meteorological Visibility in Dusty Condition

Accurately measuring meteorological visibility is an important factor in road, sea, rail, and air transportation safety, especially under visibility-reducing weather events. This paper deals with the application of Machine Learning methods to estimate meteorological visibility in dusty conditions, from the power levels of commercial microwave links and weather data including temperature, dew point, wind speed, wind direction, and atmospheric pressure. Three well-known Machine Learning methods are investigated: Decision Trees, Random Forest, and Support Vector Machines. The correlation coefficient and the mean square error, between the visibility distances estimated by Machine Learning methods and those provided by Burkina Faso weather services are computed. Except for the SVM method, all the other methods give a correlation coefficient greater than 0.90. The Random Forest method presents the best result both in terms of correlation coefficient (0.97) and means square error (0.60). For this last method, the best variables that explain the model are selected by evaluating the weight of each variable in the model. The best performance is obtained by considering the attenuation of the microwave signal and the dew point.

This study, carried out in the Léo square degree (west-central Burkina Faso) in the Palaeoproterozoic domain of the Man/Léo ridge, aims to define the shapes and positions of granitic plutons and the organisation of deformation structures using aeromagnetic data. These data have shown that there are small sub-circular granitic bodies to the north of the granitic masses in this region, and a large sub-circular granitic body to the south, around which are other smaller granitic bodies. The lineament map shows that the deformation structures are organised along three main directions and largely form these sub-circular plutonic bodies. We suggest that the granitic plutons are coalescent, pending identification of the internal structures of these granites to further refine the geodynamic model.

Effectiveness of Four Integrated Pest Management Approaches in the Control of Fruit Flies (Diptera: Tephritidae) in Mango Agro-Ecosystems in the South-Sudanian Zone of Burkina Faso

This study evaluated the effectiveness of four Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approaches in the control of Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) [Diptera: Tephritidae] and Ceratitis cosyra (Walker) [Diptera: Tephritidae] during two consecutive mango fruiting seasons (2018 and 2019) in the south-Sudanian zone of Burkina Faso. These approaches, including sanitation + M3 bait station (SM), sanitation + protein GF-120 bait (SG), sanitation + Timaye + M3 bait station (STM) and sanitation + Timaye + GF-120 bait (STG), were implemented in 12 mango orchards in three provinces of the country. In each province, one mango orchard was used as control. Flies per trap per week (FTW) and damage indices were assessed in treated orchards compared to the control orchards. The efficacy rate of each IPM approach in protecting mango against fruit fly attacks was also determined. The STG approach was the most effective in reducing both B. dorsalis and C. cosyra FTW with the best efficacy rate. Further research should emphasize indigenous and affordable attract-and-kill tools for resource poor farmers.

Introduction: In Burkina Faso, screening for hepatitis C virus in blood donations is made using sensitive ELISA (Enzyme Linked Immuno Sorbent Assay) type kits. However, no confirmation of the positive results obtained with these kits is made before their notification to the blood donors due to the high costs of the confirmation kits of immunoblots type. Objective: Evaluate two rapid kits against one immunoblot kit in order to determine the most efficiency which will be proposed as an alternative for the confirmation of ELISA tests in the socio-economic context of Burkina Faso. Material and Methods: The study was carried out using a panel of 72 sera, of which 22 were positive for anti-HCV antibodies and 50 were negative. The sera were tested using the Monolisa® HCV Ag-Ab ULTRA kit and confirmed with the DECISCAN HCV Plus kit. The panel was then tested with the SD BIOLINE HCV kit and the HCV TRI-DOT kit and the results obtained were evaluated against those of the DECISCAN HCV Plus kit used as “gold standard”. Results: Compared to the DECISCAN HCV Plus kit, the HCV TRI-DOT kit exhibited a sensitivity and specificity of 100% and the SD BIOLINE HCV kit a sensitivity of 86.36% and a specificity of 100%. Conclusion: Based on the results recorded by the HCV TRI-DOT kit, it would be best suited to the sero-epidemiological context of blood donors from the National Blood Transfusion Center and could be proposed as an alternative for confirmation of ELISA tests.

Iron toxicity is a major stress to rice caused by a high concentration of reduced iron, in the soil in many lowlands worldwide. To reduce iron toxicity in the West African lowlands, an investigation was performed at the site of the University of Ouagadougou, in pots containing an iron toxic soil from the Kou Valley (West of Burkina Faso). The experiment objective was to study the effect of mineral fertilizer on Iron Reducing Bacteria (IRB) dynamics and activity during rice cultivation, iron accumulation in rice plant and rice biomass yield under iron toxicity conditions. BOUAKE-189 and ROK-5 rice varieties, sensitive and tolerant to iron toxicity, respectively, were used for the experiment. The pots were amended with chemical fertilizers (NPK + Urea and NPK + Urea + Ca + Mg + Zn complex). Control pots without fertilization were prepared similarly. The kinetics of IRB and ferrous iron content in soil near rice roots were monitored throughout the cultural cycle using MPN and colorimetric methods, respectively. The total iron content was evaluated in rice plant using spectrometric method. Data obtained were analyzed in relation to fertilization mode, rice growth stage and rice yield using the student’s t-test and XLSTAT 2014 statistical software. The experiment revealed that NPK + Urea and NPK + Urea + Ca + Mg + Zn fertilization, decreased significantly (p < 0.0001) the number of IRB in the soil for BOUAKE-189 rice varieties. In most pots, highest IRB densities and ferrous iron content in soil were recorded from rice tillering and flowering to maturity stages, indicating that rice plants promoted microbial processes and iron reduction in soil. From the study, the NPK + Urea amendment decreased significantly ferrous iron content (p < 0.0001) in soil near BOUAKE-189 and ROK-5 rice varieties roots relatively to control pots.
