Introduction: Surgery can cause anxiety and worry, such as waking up in pain, being physically harmed or dying. This study aimed to assess the experience of patients undergoing planned gynaecological surgery in the Obstetrics Gynaecology and Reproductive Medicine department of the University Hospital Centre of Bogodogo. Patients and methods: This was a cross-sectional study with prospective data collection during the period from June 1 to August 31, 2018. The study population consisted of patients who received scheduled gynaecological surgery during the period. Results: Seventy-six (76) patients underwent scheduled surgery and 62 were included. During discussion with the gynaecologist, 58 patients (93.55%) were satisfied. When the surgery was announced, 41 patients (66.13%) were anxious. At the consultation with the anaesthetist 59 patients (95.16%) were satisfied with the discussions. Fifty-five patients (88.7%) were anxious on admission to the operating theatre. The quality of care was satisfactory for 61 patients (98.39%) and all patients were satisfied with the care team. Conclusion: Periodic evaluation of patients’ experiences should therefore be incorporated into care evaluation policies in health facilities in order to contribute to continuous improvement in the quality of medical and surgical care.

Introduction: A simulation laboratory has been set up in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Yalgado Ouedraogo Teaching Hospital. The objective of this study was to evaluate the role of the simulation in training of 7th grade students on interval IUD insertion. Material and Method: This was an evaluation study of skills before and after training that included 38 students of 7th grade medicine. Pre-training knowledges and skills were compared to those based on training using the paired Student test with a 5% significance level. Perceptions and suggestions for improvement of training made by students were collected. Results: The sex ratio of the study participants was 1.1. Their average age was 26.8 ± 0.9 years. The training increased the average knowledges score from 48.2% to 93.0% (p < 0.001). The average skills score increased from 34.4% to 92.8% (p th grade medicine students had a good perception of this training. Conclusion: The training of 7th grade medicine students in IUD insertion using simulation had a positive impact on their knowledges and skills and was well appreciated.

Introduction: Antenatal care (ANC) contributes to the reduction of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. The study aimed to investigate the determinants of the low proportion of pregnant women seen for first antenatal care in the first trimester of pregnancy at the urban medical center of Koudougou, Burkina Faso. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional study with data collection from June 08 to August 18, 2021. It involved a sample of 302 participants including 280 pregnant women and 22 maternity providers. Semi-structured individual interviews, non-participant observation, and a literature review were used. Results: Pregnant women age 20 and over, knowledge of the date of their last menstrual period, and knowledge of the antenatal care calendar were associated with coming into contact (1) with Antenatal care in the first trimester of pregnancy. In addition, there was a lack of availability of antenatal care services, inadequate reception of clients, and shortages of health products. Conclusion: There is a need to revisit strategies for communicating with women about ANC, reorganizing ANC services, and improving ANC services.

Situs inversus is an abnormal placement of the thoracic and/or abdominal organs that are inverted right/left from normal. It is a rare congenital malformation often discovered in childhood. In adults, it can lead to misdiagnosis. Clinical case: A 35-year-old female patient, seen in a hepatogastroenterology consultation for acute spontaneous pain in the right hypochondrium. She had no particular clinical history. A diagnosis of hepatopathy was suspected. Abdominal and pelvic CT scans showed the left liver, stomach and spleen in the right hypochondrium, but with the heart in place, suggesting incomplete situs inversus. The evolution in our patient was spontaneously resolved with analgesics and antispasmodics, which leads us to believe that the volvulus was probably partial and without other complications. Conclusion: In developing countries, antenatal diagnosis of situs inversus is rare and is usually made during a pathology that leads the patient to a medical consultation. CT is one of the key paraclinical examinations for its diagnosis as genetic tests are not widely available.

Objective: To describe the epidemiological, clinical and therapeutic aspects of cases of vaginal bleeding in the nonpregnant patient received in emergency at Yalgado OUEDRAOGO University Hospital. Materials and Methods: It was a retrospective and descriptive study that involved the clinical records of 326 patients collected from January 01, 2009 to December 31, 2013. Results: The average age of women was 47 years old with extremes at 12 and 82 years old. Women of childbearing age accounted for 61.6% and postmenopausal women 18.7%. 70.7% of women were pauciparous or nulliparous. Menorrhagia and pelvic pain were the main signs associated. This symptomatology required hospitalization in 85.2% of cases. The main aetiologies were uterine myomas 49.69%, cervical cancer 23% and functional metrorrhagia 11.04%. Progestin was the most used drug in 67.1% of cases. Total abdominal hysterectomy and abdominal myomectomy were the most commonly used surgical methods with 22.3%, 44.4% of cases. Eleven death cases were observed. Conclusion: Gynecological metrorrhagia is more common in women of childbearing age than in menopausal women. The main causes are fibroma, cervical cancer and functional metrorrhagia.

Background: Serious trauma is the main cause of death for people under 40 years old. According to the WHO, in 2002, nearly 1.2 million people died worldwide from road traffic injuries. The vast majority (90%) are from low and middle-income countries. The diagnostic performance, the quality of the treatments offered, and the optimization of trauma care channels, make it possible to improve the management of serious trauma. This is not always the case in our context of a country with limited resources. Objectives: The objective is o describe the epidemiological, diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of premortal death in patients with traumatic injuries. Methods: This was a descriptive study with retrospective collection in the trauma emergency department of Yalgado Ouedraogo Teaching Hospital (Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso). All patients who died on the ward while in the hospital or on arrival were included. Results: 192 deaths were listed. The annual mortality was 1.6%, the sex ratio was 6.1 and the average age was 36 years. Road traffic accidents were the main etiology: 163 deaths (85%). Context: COVID-19 can spread rapidly in haemodialysis centres, leading to fatal outcomes. Implementing physical measures is crucial in limiting the spread of infection. Aims: To assess adherence to physical measures against SARS-Cov2 in haemodialysis patients. Methods and Material: From 13 to 19 July 2021, we administered the questionnaire to haemodialysis patients during or immediately after the dialysis session. The dependent variables were adherence to wearing masks, hand washing outside the dialysis centre, social distancing of at least 1.5 meters, and cough and sneeze hygiene. Statistical Analysis Used: Data were analyzed using Epi info software;descriptive statistics were presented as mean, headcount, and percentage;related factors were determined by multi-logistic regression. The significance level was 5%. The Health Research Ethics Committee approved the research protocol. Results: 142 patients were included (mean age: 42.5 ± 14 years). Wearing masks, hand-washing, social distancing, and coughing and sneezing hygiene were observed by 88%, 75%, 47%, and 60% of patients, respectively. Conclusion: Wearing masks was the most respected physical measure, while social distancing was the least respected.

Assessing the Pathogenic Ability of Six Species of Fusarium Genus on Onion Variety in Burkina Faso

Prema 178 onion variety is widely used in production in Burkina Faso. It is greatly appreciated but susceptible to basal rot. This study aimed to evaluate the pathogenic ability of six strains of Fusarium genus identified in Burkina Faso on onion. Seeds, seedlings and bulbs were used for the test. A conidial suspension of each strain was made in tubes and adjusted to 1 × 106 conidia/ml with distilled water for the different tests. Germination test in the laboratory and greenhouse showed that all treatments with the strains of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cepae, F. solani, F. falciforme, F. acutatum, F. proliferatum and F. sp. induced failure to emerge and showed a significant difference with the control. The different strains also induced stunting rates of coleoptile growth. Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cepae, F. acutatum, F. proliferatum, F. falciforme and F. solani were very aggressive, as they recorded above 50% damping-off rates. The test on the bulbs revealed that the strains were classified into two groups. The first consists of F. oxysporum f. sp. cepae, F. solani, F. falciforme, F. acutatum, which caused rots with respective lengths from 2.06;1.48;1.84;1.46 and 2.12 cm, thus very aggressive according to Ghanbarzadeh scale. The second is formed by F. proliferatum which recorded 0.90 cm of rot length, thus moderately aggressive. It would be appropriate to suggest a sustainable management method for these pathogens in order to improve the yield of onion production.

Tomato is a widely consumed vegetable in Burkina Faso and throughout the world. However, when handled improperly, it can serve as a vector of pathogen transmission to human if ingested raw or through cross-contamination with cooked food. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of Salmonella spp from tomatoes sold in the markets of Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso and characteristics of vending conditions. One hundred and ninety-eight (198) different tomato samples were randomly purchased from one hundred and thirteen (113) different vendors in the markets of Ouagadougou. The samples were examined and classified into three categories according to their texture and the level of deterioration. The prevalence of Salmonella spp identification was determined using standard microbiological methods. A survey was conducted using a questionnaire on transport and vending conditions for tomatoes. In total, Salmonella prevalence was 19.19% in all tomato’s samples analyzed and was 18.18% for intact category, 22.73% in D2 category and 16.67% in category D4. The survey revealed poor transport and sales conditions for the majority of tomato sellers. The present study revealed the presence of Salmonella in tomatoes samples. These results highlight the risk associated with the consumption of tomatoes if hygienic practices are not respected during tomatoes handling and preparation. The results of the study also show the need to wash tomatoes systematically after purchase with a disinfectant, especially tomatoes sold in open markets in developing countries.
