From ancient wisdom to modern science:Gut microbiota sheds light on property theory of traditional Chinese medicine

The property theory of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) has been practiced for thousands of years,playing a pivotal role in the clinical application of TCM. While advancements in energy metabolism,chemical composition analysis, machine learning, ion current modeling, and supercritical fluid technology have provided valuable insight into how aspects of TCM property theory may be measured, these studies only capture specific aspects of TCM property theory in isolation, overlooking the holistic perspective inherent in TCM. To systematically investigate the modern interpretation of the TCM property theory from multidimensional perspectives, we consulted the Chinese Pharmacopoeia(2020 edition) to compile a list of Chinese materia medica(CMM). Then, using the Latin names of each CMM and gut microbiota as keywords, we searched the PubMed database for relevant research on gut microbiota and CMM. The regulatory patterns of different herbs on gut microbiota were then summarized from the perspectives of the four natures, the five flavors and the meridian tropism. In terms of the four natures, we found that warm-natured medicines promoted the colonization of specific beneficial bacteria,while cold-natured medicines boosted populations of some beneficial bacteria while suppressing pathogenic bacteria. Analysis of the five flavors revealed that sweet-flavored and bitter-flavored CMMs positively influenced beneficial bacteria while inhibiting harmful bacteria. CMMs with different meridian tropism exhibited complex modulative patterns on gut microbiota, with Jueyin(Liver) and Taiyin(Lung) meridian CMMs generally exerting a stronger effect. The gut microbiota may be a biological indicator for characterizing the TCM property theory, which not only enhances our understanding of classic TCM theory but also contributes to its scientific advancement and application in healthcare.

Rapid detection of pathogens present on contaminated surfaces is crucial for food safety and public health due to the high morbidity and mortality of bacterial ***,a sensitive and efficient method for on-site identification of foodborne pathogens on anisotropic surfaces was developed by using an in situ instantaneously prepared surface-enhanced Raman scattering(SERS)*** achieve this,molybdenum-doped gallic acid-derived carbon dots(MCDs)are utilized as the reductant for synthesizing Au@MCDs nanohybrids within just 3 s at ambient *** synergistic effect of the electromagnetic enhancement and charge transfer of Au@MCDs enables excellent SERS performance 10 times stronger than bare Au *** bioassay platform requires less than 5 min to complete the quantitative detection of foodborne pathogens on various microbial-contaminated interfaces with a sensitivity of 10 CFU/*** innovative strategy breaks the long-standing limitations of SERS substrates in practical use,such as the time-consuming process,interference of residual surfactants,poor surface stability,and few application scenarios,providing a promising tool for widespread applications in biomedical research and clinical diagnostics.

Highly selective and eco-friendly dihydroisoquinoline synthesis via Cu/Co synergistic catalysis in Cu NPs@MOFs catalyst under mild conditions

3,4-Dihydroisoquinoline(DHIQ)is an important precursor used in the production of drugs for treating cancer,HIV,Alzheimer's disease,*** studies on DHIQ synthesis show low catalytic selectivity due to the susceptible over-oxidation feedstock of1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline(THIQ),which often requires alkali ***,it is desirable yet challenging to explore a highly selective and efficient oxydehydrogenation capacity for DHIQ synthesis under eco-friendly reaction ***,a novel framework 1 was synthesized,exhibiting 1D channels with the size of 4.6 A×9.6 A and high solvent/p H/thermal stability.A stable framework allows it to encapsulate Cu nanoparticles(NPs)to form Cu NPs@1-x(x=1,2,3,and 4)with varying loading amounts of Cu NPs at 2.0 wt%,3.0 wt%,4.0 wt%,and 6.0 wt%,*** NPs@1-3 could selectively catalyze the reaction from THIQ to DHIQ with a high selectivity of 98%and a recorded turnover frequency(TOF)of 22.1 h-1under eco-friendly mild *** corresponding catalytic activity can maintain at least five recyclings and can be further applied to gram-scale ***,the efficient preparation of DHIQ catalyzed by Cu NPs@1-3 could be realized even under air ***,the anticancer molecule precursor synthesis of 6,7-dimethoxy-3,4-dihydroisoquinoline was also selectively catalyzed by Cu NPs@*** investigations revealed that high catalytic performance can be attributed to the stable framework and the synergistic catalytic effect of the loaded Cu NPs and Co metal *** importantly,this work represents the first example of MOF catalysts for selectively thermo-catalytic DHIQ synthesis and demonstrates a simple approach to obtain efficient catalysts for selective oxydehydrogenation in the production of unsaturated compounds.

Distribution and bioavailability of mercury in size-fractioned atmospheric particles around an ultra-low emission power plant in Southwest China

Ultra-low emission(ULE)technology retrofits significantly impact the particulate-bound mercury(Hg)emissions from coal-fired power plants(CFPPs);however,the distribution and bioavailability of Hg in size-fractioned particulate matter(PM)around the ULE-retrofitted CF-PPs are less ***,total Hg and its chemical speciation in TSP(total suspended particles),PM_(10)(aerodynamic particle diameter≤10μm)and PM_(2.5)(aerodynamic particle diameter≤2.5μm)around a ULE-retrofitted CFPP in Guizhou Province were *** PM_(2.5)concentration was higher around this ULE-retrofitted CFPP than that in the intra-regional urban cities,and it had higher mass Hg concentration than other sizefractioned *** Hg concentrations in PM had multifarious sources including CFPP,vehicle exhaust and biomass combustion,while they were significantly higher in autumn and winter than those in other seasons(P40%).Mass concentrations of exchangeable,HCl-soluble,elemental,and residual Hg in PM_(2.5)were higher than those in other size-fractioned PM,and were markedly elevated in autumn and winter(P<0.05).In PM_(2.5),HCl-soluble Hg presented a significantly positive relationship with elemental Hg(P<0.05),while residual Hg showed the significantly positive relationships with HCl-soluble Hg and elemental Hg(P<0.01).Overall,these results suggested that atmospheric PM-bound Hg around the ULE-retrofitted CFPP tends to accumulate in finer PM,and has higher bioavailable fractions,while has potential transformation between chemical speciation.

The interactions between lignin oligomers and solvents determine the behaviors of lignin oligomers self-assembling into uniform lignin nanoparticles(LNPs).Herein,several alcohol solvents,which readily interact with the lignin oligomers,were adopted to study their effects during solvent shifting process for LNPs’*** lignin oligomers with widely distributed molecular weight and abundant guaiacyl units were extracted from wood waste(mainly consists of pine wood),exerting outstanding self-assembly *** and spherical LNPs were generated in H_(2)O-n-propanol cosolvent,whereas irregular LNPs were obtained in H_(2)O-methanol *** unsatisfactory self-assembly performance of the lignin oligomers in H_(2)O-methanol cosolvent could be attributed to two *** one hand,for the initial dissolution state,the distinguishing Hansen solubility parameter and polarity between methanol solvent and lignin oligomers resulted in the poor dispersion of the lignin *** the other hand,strong hydrogen bonds between methanol solvent and lignin oligomers during solvent shifting process,hindered the interactions among the lignin oligomers for self-assembly.

Garnet-type solid-state batteries(SSBs)are considered to be one of the most promising candidates to realize next-generation lithium metal batteries with high energy density and ***,the dendrite-induced short-circuit and the poor interfacial contact impeded the practical ***,interface engineering to achieve low interfacial resistance without high temperature calcination was developed,which Li_(6.4)La_(3)Zr_(1.4)Ta_(0.6)O_(12)(LLZTO)was simply coated with complex hydride(Li_(4)(BH_(4))_(3)I(3L1L))in various mass ratios n(Li_(4)(BH_(4))_(3)I)-(100−n)LLZTO(10≤n≤40).The interfacial conductivity increases by more than three orders of magnitude from 8.29×10^(−6)S·cm^(−1)to 1.10×10^(−2)S·cm^(−1).Symmetric Li cells exhibit a high critical current density(CCD)of 4.0 mA·cm^(−2) and an excellent cycling stability for 200 h at 4.0 mA·cm^(−2).SSBs with polymeric sulfur-polyacrylonitrile(SPAN)cathode achieve a high discharge capacity of 1149 mAh·g^(−1) with a capacity retention of 91%after 100 cycles(0.2 C).This attempt guides a simple yet efficient strategy for obtaining a stable Li/LLZTO interface,which would promote the development of solid-state batteries.

Urban heat stress profoundly affects the health of ***,current research primarily focuses on quantifying the risk of urban heat based on LST,Ta,etc.,overlooking the crucial and intimate influence of continuous intense solar radiation on human thermal comfort and ***,there is a lack of smaller units to support more precise *** study utilized the radiant heat stress intensity(RHSI)metric concentrating on the intensity and duration of thermal radiation,to develop a thermal-radiation induced health risk(TIHR)assessment *** technologies such as the SOLWEIG model,Python,BERT,and GIS enables precise calculations of 12 spatial indices,including RHSI and Weibo *** facilitates a more accurate assessment of health risks at the smallest urban units(blocks)and directly guides *** application of this workflow in the case of Suoyuwan,Dalian,China,confirms its value,as it can be used to determine which blocks should be prioritized for specific aspects of risk prevention and *** results show that some blocks exhibited differences in TIHR even within close proximity,with disaster-causing factors varying according to *** study proposes a novel assessment framework based on the interactive perspective of thermal radiation-human-activity-space.

Water-soluble chitosan promotes remediation of Pb-contaminated soil by Hylotelephium spectabile

Water-soluble chitosan(WSC)has been studied for its ability to mobilize soil Pb and promote the phytoremediation by Hylotelephium spectabile in Pb-contaminated *** aimed to clarify the internal mechanism by which wSC impacts phytoremediation by examining plant growth and Pb accumulation performance of *** as well as the Pb form,functional groups,and mineral phases of Pb-contaminated *** effectively decreased soil pH and activated Pb migration in rhizosphere soils,with a considerable increase in water-soluble and acid-extractable Pb by 29%-102%and 9%-65%,respectively,and a clear decreasing trend in reducible and oxidizable ***-transform infrared spectroscopy revealed a significant increase in amino and hydroxyl groups in the soil generated by *** coordination of Pb with amino and hydroxyl groups may play an important role in the formation of Pb complexes and activation of Pb in *** field trials,the application of WSC significantly increased Pb accumulation in *** by 125.44%,reaching 92 g/hm^(2).Moreover,the organic matter and nitrogen in the soils were increased by WSc,which improved the growth conditions of *** obvious growth inhibition was observed in either the pot or field ***,WSC is a promising chelating agent for mobilizing Pb in ***,WSC can be potentially used to boost ***-mediated phytoremediation of Pb-contaminatedfarmland.

Pulmonary rehabilitation protocols in urgent lung transplantation patients

BACKGROUND:Prolonged invasive respiratory support and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation(ECMO)in patients requiring urgent lung transplantation(ULTx)present signifi cant challenges to clinical practice due to severe underlying diseases and complex *** aim of the study was to report the clinical outcomes of patients who received ULTx and followed the perioperative rehabilitation protocol implemented in a lung transplant ***:A retrospective analysis was conducted in ULTx patients who required preoperative invasive mechanical ventilation(IMV)and ECMO between January 2018 and January *** were retrieved from electronic medical records at our lung transplant ***:Fourteen patients(mean age 57.43±10.97 years;12 males,2 females)underwent ULTx with bridging ECMO and *** mean body mass index was 23.94±3.33 kg/m²,and the mean Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation(APACHE)II score was 21.50±*** Nutritional Risk Screening 2002(NRS 2002)scores were≥*** was performed after an 8.5-day waiting period(interquartile interval[IQR]5.0-26.5 d).Following the surgeries,the average lengths of ECMO and IMV were 1.0(IQR 1.0-2.0)d and 5.0(IQR 3.0-7.3)d,*** total length of hospital stay was 60.1±30.8 d,with an average intensive care unit stay of 38.3±22.9 d and post-operative hospitalization stay of 45.8±26.1 *** patients died within 30 d after ULTx,with a 30-day survival rate of 85.71%.CONCLUSION:Patients receiving ULTx showed an acceptable short-term survival rate,validating the practicality and safety of the treatment protocols implemented in our center.
