Conditioning treatments mitigate the levels of fecal pollution indicators in soil during land-application of sewage sludge

Sewage sludge is a major source of fecal pathogens in the environment, and its application to land can result in a significant release of these pathogens into the soil. While conditioning treatments are crucial for improving the dewatering process of sludge, their impact on the presence and behavior of fecal pathogens in soil remains unclear. This study aims to assess four extraction methods for recovering fecal pollution indicators from soil amended with unconditioned and conditioned sludge. The indicators include Escherichia coli(EC), human-specific HF183 Bacteroides(HF183), human adenovirus(HAdV), human BK polyomavirus(BKPyV), human JC polyomavirus(JCPyV), and cross-assembly phage(crAssphage). This study also examines how soil moisture content affects the decay of these fecal pollution indicators in soil amended with raw sludge and investigates the influence of conditioning treatments with cationic polyacrylamide(PAM), Fenton's reagents, Fe[Ⅲ]/CaO on their persistence in soil. The results indicated that the direct extraction method was the most effective and unbiased for recovering fecal pollution indicators from sludge-amended soil compared with the three elution-concentration methods. All fecal pollution indicators, except HAdV, remained stable under dry soil conditions, while high soil moisture content(48.39%-53.14%) slowed the decay rates of these indicators. During the application of sludge to soil, effective control of fecal pollution indicators was observed, with JCPyVand HAdV becoming undetectable within a short period. The log reduction values of HF183, BKPyV, and crAssphage ranged from 0.1 to 2.8 logs after 30 d of cultivation. The application of conditioned sludge, especially Fenton's reagent-conditioned sludge, resulted in a reduction in human fecal contamination in the receiving soil. Therefore, implementing appropriate conditioning methods, such as using Fenton's reagent, can effectively mitigate the health risks associated with fecal pathogens.

Vortex wave and plane wave,as two most fundamental forms of wave propagation,are widely applied in various research ***,there is currently a lack of basic mechanism to enable arbitrary conversion between *** this paper,we propose a new paradigm of extremely anisotropic acoustic metasurface(AM)to achieve the efficient conversion from 2D vortex waves with arbitrary orbital angular momentum(OAM)to plane *** underlying physics of this conversion process is ensured by the symmetry shift of AM medium parameters and the directional compensation of ***,this novel phenomenon is further verified by analytical calculations,numerical demonstrations,and acoustic experiments,and the deflection angle and direction of the converted plane waves are qualitatively and quantitatively confirmed by a simple *** work provides new possibilities for arbitrary manipulation of acoustic vortex,and holds potential applications in acoustic communication and OAM-based devices.

An isolated symmetrical 2T2R cell enabling high precision and high density for RRAM-based in-memory computing

In-memory computing(IMC), leveraging emerging memories, holds significant promise in overcoming memory limitations and improving energy efficiency. However, the prevailing IMC array structure based on serially connected transistors and memory cells(1T1R/2T2R), along with the signed weight mapping scheme, can lead to asymmetrical weight sensing issues(AWS) due to electrical asymmetry within the1T1R/2T2R structure, particularly in highly scaled cells where the transistor's resistance becomes significant. In this paper, we propose and fabricate an electrically symmetric memory cell based on a physically isolated 2T2R structure for IMC. This design aims to enhance the precision and density of RRAM-based IMC arrays. The 2T2R cells are manufactured using the back-end-of-line(BEOL) process of a commercial40 nm technology platform. The feasibility of this design is verified through measured and simulated results,showcasing its capability to address the issue of AWS. Compared to conventional 2T2R cells, this design achieves a considerably smaller transistor footprint without compromising accuracy, while also improving integration density by 42.2%. These innovative memory cell advancements have the potential to further advance high-energy-efficient IMC technology.

Lift system optimization for hover-capable flapping wing micro air vehicle

A key challenge is using bionic mechanisms to enhance aerodynamic performance of hover-capable flapping wing micro air vehicle(FWMAV).This paper presented a new lift system with high lift and aerodynamic efficiency,which use a hummingbird as a bionic *** new lift system is able to effectively utilize the high lift mechanism of hummingbirds,and this study innovatively utilizes elastic energy storage elements and installs them at the wing root to help improve aerodynamic performance.A flapping angle of 154°is achieved through the optimization of the flapping mechanism *** optimized wing shape and parameters are obtained through experimental studies on the ***,the max net lift generated is 17.6%of the flapping wing vehicle’s ***,energy is stored and released periodically during the flapping cycle,by imitating the musculoskeletal system at the wing roots of hummingbirds,thereby improving the energy utilization rate of the FWMAV and reducing power consumption by 4.5%under the same ***,strength verification and modal analyses are conducted on the flapping mechanism,and the weight of the flapping mechanism is reduced through the analysis and testing of different *** results show that the lift system can generate a stable lift of 31.98 g with a wingspan of 175 mm,while the lift system weighs only 10.5 g,providing aerodynamic conditions suitable for high maneuverability flight of FWMAVs.

3D near-surface P-wave velocity structure imaging with Distributed Acoustic Sensing and electric hammer source

Distributed Acoustic Sensing(DAS) is an emerging technique for ultra-dense seismic observation, which provides a new method for high-resolution sub-surface seismic imaging. Recently a large number of linear DAS arrays have been used for two-dimensional S-wave near-surface imaging in urban areas. In order to explore the feasibility of three-dimensional(3D) structure imaging using a DAS array, we carried out an active source experiment at the Beijing National Earth Observatory. We deployed a 1 km optical cable in a rectangular shape, and the optical cable was recast into 250 sensors with a channel spacing of 4 m. The DAS array clearly recorded the P, S and surface waves generated by a hammer source. The first-arrival P wave travel times were first picked with a ShortTerm Average/Long-Term Average(STA/LTA) method and further manually checked. The P-wave signals recorded by the DAS are consistent with those recorded by the horizontal components of short-period seismometers. At shorter source-receiver distances, the picked P-wave arrivals from the DAS recording are consistent with vertical component recordings of seismometers, but they clearly lag behind the latter at greater *** is likely due to a combination of the signal-to-noise ratio and the polarization of the incoming wave. Then,we used the Tomo DD software to invert the 3D P-wave velocity structure for the uppermost 50 m with a resolution of 10 m. The inverted P-wave velocity structures agree well with the S-wave velocity structure previously obtained through ambient noise tomography. Our study indicates the feasibility of 3D near-surface imaging with the active source and DAS array. However, the inverted absolute velocity values at large depths may be biased due to potential time shifts between the DAS recording and seismometer at large source-receiver distances.

Numerical Simulation on Production Trials by Using Depressurization for Typical Marine Hydrate Reservoirs:Well Type and Formation Dip

Natural gas hydrate has huge reserves and is widely distributed in marine *** commercial development is of great significance for alleviating the contradiction between energy supply and *** an efficient research method,numerical simulation can provide valuable insights for the design and optimization of hydrate ***,most of the current production models simplify the reservoir as a two-dimensional(2D)horizontal layered model,often ignoring the impact of formation dip *** improve the accuracy of production prediction and provide theoretical support for the optimization of production well design,two three-dimensional(3D)geological models with different dip angles based on the geological data from two typical sites are *** vertical well,horizontal well and multilateral wells are deployed in these reservoirs with different permeabilities to perform production trial,and the sensitivity analysis of dip angles is also carried *** short-term production behaviors in high and low permeability reservoirs with different dip angles are *** simulation results show that 1)the gas and water production behaviors for different well types in the two typical reservoirs show obviously different variation laws when the short-term depressurization is conducted in the inclined formation;2)the inclined formation will reduce the gas production and increase the water extraction,and the phenomena becomes pronounced as the dip angle increases,particularly in the low-permeability reservoirs;3)and the impact of formation dip on hydrate recovery does not change significantly with the variation of well type.

Unidirectional propagation of water waves near ancient Luoyang Bridge

Metasurfaces and metagratings offer new platforms for electromagnetic wave control with significant ***,metasurfaces based on abrupt phase change and resonant structures suffer from the drawback of high loss and face challenges when applied in water ***,the application of metasurfaces in water wave control is not ideal due to the limitations associated with high loss and other *** have discovered that non-resonant metagratings exhibit promising effects in water wave *** the similarity between bridges and metagratings,we have successfully developed a water wave metagrating model inspired by the ancient Luoyang Bridge in *** conduct theoretical calculations and simulations on the metagrating and derive the equivalent anisotropic model of the *** model provides evidence that the metagrating has the capability to control water waves and achieve unidirectional surface water *** accuracy of our theory is strongly supported by the clear observation of the unidirectional propagation phenomenon during simulation and experiments conducted using a reduced version of the *** is the first time that the unidirectional propagation of water waves has been seen in water wave metagrating *** all,we realize the water wave metagrating experiment for the first *** combining complex gratings with real bridges,we explore the physics embedded in the ancient building—Luoyang Bridge,which are of great significance for the water wave metagrating design and provide a new method for analyzing the effects of water waves on *** the same time,this discovery also provides a new idea for ocean cargo transportation,ocean garbage cleaning,and the development and protection of ancient bridges.
