Soil water deficit and salt stress are major limiting factors of plant growth and agricultural productivity. The primary root is the first organ to perceive the stress signals for drought and salt stress. In this study, maize plant subjected to drought, salt and combined stresses displayed a significantly reduced primary root length relative to the control plants. GC-MS was used to determine changes in the metabolites of the primary root of maize in response to salt, drought and combined stresses. A total of 86 metabolites were measured, including 29 amino acids and amines, 21 organic acids, four fatty acids, six phosphoric acids, 10 sugars, 10 polyols, and six others. Among these, 53 metabolites with a significant change under different stresses were identified in the primary root, and the content of most metabolites showed down-accumulation. A total of four and 18 metabolites showed significant up-and down-accumulation to all three treatments, respectively. The levels of several compatible solutes, including sugars and polyols, were increased to help maintain the osmotic balance. The levels of metabolites involved in the TCA cycle, including citric acid, ketoglutaric acid, fumaric acid, and malic acid, were reduced in the primary root. The contents of metabolites in the shikimate pathway, such as quinic acid and shikimic acid, were significantly decreased. This study reveals the complex metabolic responses of the primary root to combined drought and salt stresses and extends our understanding of the mechanisms involved in root responses to abiotic tolerance in maize.

Ionic liquids [Bmim]BF4 and [Bpy]BF4 were employed as environmentally benign media in Doebner condensation to synthesize α, β-unsaturated carboxylic acid. The good results showed that [Bmim]BF4 and [Bpy]BF4 were efficient media for Doebner condensation, which could be recycled easily. The highest yields could reach 93% and 90% in [Bmim]BF4 and [Bpy]BF4, respectively.

Improving Performance of Inoculating Alloy Wires by Coating a Boron Nitride Layer

The paper reports the deposition（by magnetron sputtering） and properties of polycrystalline boron nitride （BN） layers on commercial inoculating alloy wires. As is characterized by means of Fourier transform infrared（FTIR） spectroscopy, electron energy dispersive X-ray（EDX） spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy（SEM）, the thin BN layers consist of hexagonal and orthorhombic BN phases and are smooth without cracks. Organism transfer- ring-circles experiments reveal that the adhesion between the BN layer and alloy wire is very good after tens of cycles. It is demonstrated that the BN layers covered wires are biomaterial lubricious and self-cleaning. As a result, BN layer would effectively enhance the function and efficiency of inoculating alloy wires, which could be widely ap- plied to bio-experimentation and biomedicine apparatuses.

A simple technique is reported for fabricating the mesa structure on Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ single crystal. In the patterning process, metal masks are used instead of photolithography and argon ion milling is applied to form the small mesa on the Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ crystal surface. Real four-probe transport measurements are made on the mesa structure and typical c-axis current-voltage (I - V) characteristics of the intrinsic Josephson effect have been observed. The superconducting gap parameter can be extracted from the multi-branch structure in the I - V characteristics. Additionally, from the strong hysteresis in the I - V characteristics, the capacitance CJ of the unit intrinsic Josephson junction has been estimated to be 2.3pF, which is in good agreement with that evaluated from the geometric parameters of the unit junction between the two copper oxide layers.

Quality assessment of crowdsourced test cases

Various software-engineering problems have been solved by crowdsourcing. In many projects,the software outsourcing process is streamlined on cloud-based platforms. Among software engineering tasks,test-case development is particularly suitable for crowdsourcing, because a large number of test cases can be generated at little monetary cost. However, the numerous test cases harvested from crowdsourcing can be high-or low-quality. Owing to the large volume, distinguishing the high-quality tests by traditional techniques is computationally expensive. Therefore, crowdsourced testing would benefit from an efficient mechanism distinguishes the qualities of the test cases. This paper introduces an automated approach —TCQA — to evaluate the quality of test cases based on the onsite coding history. Quality assessment by TCQA proceeds through three steps:(1) modeling the code history as a time series,(2) extracting the multiple relevant features from the time series, and(3) building a model that classifies the test cases based on their qualities. Step(3) is accomplished by feature-based machine-learning techniques. By leveraging the onsite coding history, TCQA can assess the test-case quality without performing expensive source-code analysis or executing the test cases. Using the data of nine test-development tasks involving more than 400 participants, we evaluated TCQA from multiple perspectives. The TCQA approach assessed the quality of the test cases with higher precision, faster speed, and lower overhead than conventional test-case qualityassessment techniques. Moreover, TCQA provided yield real-time insights on test-case quality before the assessment was finished.

Background:The current standard of care for non-bulky diffuse large B-cell lymphoma(DLBCL)patients with an International Prognostic Index(IPI)of 0 is four cycles of rituximab plus cyclophosphamide,doxorubicin,vincristine and prednisone(R-CHOP)but whether the same efficacy can be achieved with reduced chemotherapy regimen of four cycles for non-bulky DLBCL patients with an IPI of 1 remains *** study compared four cycles versus six cycles of chemotherapy in non-bulky low-risk DLBCL patients with negative interim positron emission tomography with computed tomography(PET-CT,Deauville 1-3),irrespective of age and other IPI risk factors(IPI 0-1).Methods:This was an open-label,randomized,phaseⅢ,non-inferiority *** aged 14-75 years with newly diagnosed low-risk DLBCL,according to IPI,achieving PET-CT confirmed complete response(CR)after four cycles of R-CHOPwere randomized(1:1)between four cycles of rituximab(4R-CHOP+4R arm)or two cycles of R-CHOP plus two cycles of rituximab(6R-CHOP+2R arm).The primary endpoint was 2-year progression-free survival(PFS),conducted in the intention-to-treat *** was assessed in patients with at least one cycle of assigned *** non-inferiority margin was-8%.Results:A total of 287 patients were included in the intention-to-treat analysis,the median follow-up was 47.3 months,and the 2-year PFS rate was 95%(95%confidence interval[CI],92%to 99%)and 94%(95%CI,91%to 98%)for the 4R-CHOP+4R and 6R-CHOP+2R *** absolute difference in 2-year PFS between the two arms was 1%(95%CI,-5%to 7%),supporting the non-inferiority of 4R-CHOP+*** 3-4 neutropenia was lower in the last four cycles of rituximab alone in the 4R-CHOP+4R arm(16.7%versus 76.9%),with decreased risk of febrile neutropenia(0.0%versus 8.4%)and infection(2.1%versus 14.0%).Conclusions:For newly diagnosed low-risk DLBCL patients,interim PET-CT after four cycles of R-CHOP was effective in identifying patients with Deauville 1-3 who would have a goo
