Clinicopathologic characteristics of gastric carcinoma in elderly patients: A comparison with young patients

AIM:To examine the clinicopathologic features of elderly patients with gastric carcinoma and to investigate the relationship between prognosis and ***: We reviewed the hospital records of 2 014patients with gastric carcinoma retrospectively to compare the clinicopathologic findings in elderly (age ＞70 years) and young (age ＜36 years) patients during the period from 1986 to 2000 in a tertiary referral center in Gwangju, Korea. Overall survival was the main outcome ***: Of the 2 014 patients, 194 (9.6%) were in the elderly group and 137 (6.8%) were in the young *** elderly and young patients had similar distributions with respect to depth of invasion, nodal involvement, hepatic metastasis, peritoneal dissemination, tumor stage at the initial diagnosis, and type of surgery. Synchronous multiple carcinomas were found in 14/194 (7.2%) of the elderly group and 4/137 (2.9%) of the young group (P＜0.05). Using the Borrmann classification, type Ⅳ was more frequent in the young patients than in the elderly patients (P＜0.05).Significantly more elderly patients had a well or moderately differentiated histology, and more young patients had a poorly differentiated histology and signet ring cell carcinoma (P＜0.001). The 5-year survival rates of elderly and young patients did not differ statistically (52.8% vs 46.5%,P = 0.5290). Multivariate analysis showed that the histologic type, nodal involvement and operative curability were significant prognostic factors, and age itself was not an independent prognostic factor of survival for elderly gastric carcinoma ***: Elderly patients with gastric carcinoma do not have a worse prognosis than young patients. The important prognostic factor is whether the patients undergo a curative resection.

Using new combinatorics of young walls,we give a new construction of the arbitrary level highest weight crystal B(λ)for the quantum affine algebras of types A^((2))_(2n),D^((2))_(n+1),A^((2))_(2n−1),D^((1))_(n),B^((1))_(n) and C^((1))_(n).We show that the crystal consisting of reduced young walls is isomorphic to the crystal B(λ).Moreover,we provide a new realization of the crystal B(∞)in terms of reduced virtual young walls and reduced extended young walls.

TToo tthhee eeddiittoorr::Eating disorder(ED),as defined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders(DSM-5),is a persistent disturbance of eating or eating-related behaviour that results in the altered consumption or absorption of food and that significantly impairs physical health or psychosocial functioning.^(1)The DSM-5 outlines criteria for EDs,including anorexia nervosa,bulimia nervosa,binge-eating disorder,pica,rumination disorder and avoidant/restrictive food intake *** are relatively common in young people,affecting 5.5%-17.9%of young women and 0.6%-2.4%of young men by the time they reach early adulthood.

Comments to young surgeons concerning laparoscopic spleenpreserving D2 lymph node dissection for advanced gastric cancer on the upper body

Qualified radical gastrectomy with lymph node dissection is very important to the prognosis of patients with gastric cancer. Now D2 lymph node dissection is standard procedure for gastric cancer surgery, and spleen hilar lymph node dissection is mandatory for gastric cancer in upper body. Because the anatomy of vessels in this area is very complicated, D2 lymph node dissection is technical challenging not only for open gastrectomy but also for laparoscopic one. Adapting a new technique is important to all surgeons, but we surgeons should always consider a patient＇s safety as the most important factor during surgery and that efforts should be based on scientific rationale with oncologic principles. I hope that the recent report by Huang et al. about laparoscopic spleen preserving hilar lymph node dissection would be helpful to young surgeons who will perform laparoscpic total gastrectomy for gastric cancer.

Objectives:We investigated whether the selective cerebral perfusion(SCP)technique causes differences in changes in cerebral perfusion between both hemispheres in young infants,using cerebral oxygen saturation(ScO2)as an ***,we determined the association between the discrepancy in ScO2 and cerebral perfu-sion pressure during ***:The difference in ScO2 between the left and right cerebral hemispheres(ΔScO2 Rt-Lt)was calculated during clamping of the innominate artery(IA)and during ***:In 25 infants(aged 2 to 78 days),the left and right ScO2 were well maintained(median 63.2%and 60.9%during IA clamping,respectively;64.0%and 65.6%during SCP,respectively).During IA clamping,right and left ScO2 decreased(med-ian-1.4%and-1.0%,respectively).During SCP,rightΔScO2 was higher compared to leftΔScO2(median 1.5%vs.0.6%;pyoung infants;this may depend on the perfusion pressure.

Body weight misperception and psychological distress among young South Korean adults:the role of physical activity

Background:Emerging evidence suggests that body weight misperception may be associated with psychological distress among people in developed *** in physical activity(PA)may negate the association between weight misperception and psychological distress given the well-known benefits of PA on psychological *** study examined the role of PA in associations between body weight misperception and psychological distress among young South Korean ***:Data from individuals aged 20 to 39 years who participated in the Fifth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys 2010-2012(N=6055)was included in the logistic ***:The proportions of the respondents under-and over-perceiving their body weight were 66.9%and 0.8%among men and 16.3%and 15.6%among women respectively.A moderating effect of PA participation was observed on the relationship between body weight over-perception and depressed mood(Odds Ratio[OR]=0.55;95%Confidence Intervals[95%CI]=0.34,0.89).Among individuals who did not meet the recommended vigorous-intensity PA(≥20 min/session and≥3 day/week),body weight over-perception was associated with depressed mood(OR=1.71,95%CI=1.19,2.46)compared to the accurate-perception ***,no association was observed among those who met the recommended vigorous-intensity PA(OR=1.52,95%CI=0.45,5.22).Similar patterns were found among physically active versus inactive individuals(recommended walking not met:OR=2.02,95%CI=1.29,3.15;recommended walking met:OR=1.28,95%CI=0.66,2.49;muscular strengthening exercises for<2 day/week:OR=1.74,95%CI=1.21,2.51;muscular strengthening exercises for≥2 day/week:OR=1.38,95%CI=0.37,5.14).No relationship existed between body weight over-perception and depressed mood after adjusting for ***:Participating in regular PA may buffer a potential negative impact of body weight over-perception on depressive mood.
