Balancing timber production and habitat conservation of Okinawa Rails(Gallirallus okinawae): Application of a harvest scheduling optimization model in subtropical forest in Okinawa, Japan

Finding the right balance between timber production and the management of forest-dependent wildlife species,present a difficult challenge for forest resource managers and policy makers in Okinawa,Japan.A possible explanation of this can be found in the unique nature of the forest management area which is populated with various kinds of rare and endangered *** issue has been brought to light as a result of the nomination of northern Okinawa Island in 2018 as a candidate for World Natural Heritage *** nomination has raised public awareness to the possibility of conflicting management objectives between timber extraction and the conservation of habitat for forest-dependent wildlife *** exclusively for one objective over the other may fail to meet the demand for both forest products and wildlife habitat,ultimately jeopardizing the stability of human and wildlife *** is therefore important to achieve a better balance between the objective of timber production and conservation of wildlife *** the significance of this subject area,current ongoing discussions on how to effectively manage for forest resources,often lack scientific basis to make sound judgement or evaluate tradeoffs between conflicting *** the effect of these forest management activities on wildlife habitat provides useful and important information needed to make forest management and policy *** this study we develop a spatial timber harvest scheduling model that incorporates habitat suitability index(HSI)models for the Okinawa Rail(Gallirallus okinawae),an endangered avian species found on Okinawa,*** illustrate how the proposed coupling model assembles spatial information,which ultimately aids the study of forest management effects on wildlife habitat,we apply these models to a forest area in Okinawa and conduct a simple simulation analysis.

Efficacy of adhesive strapping on umbilical hernia in children:a systematic review and meta-analysis of cohort studies

Background Although adhesive strapping(AS)for pediatric umbilical hernia(UH),which was once obsolete,has been reconsidered as a common practice in Japan,its efficacy is still *** study aimed to evaluate its efficacy by reviewing related *** A comprehensive literature search of PubMed,Cochrane,Google Scholar,and Igaku Chuo Zasshi via Ichushi-Web was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses *** studies reporting on the UH closure rate after AS compared with observation-only management were *** A total of 10 cohort studies were included,and the overall UH closure rate was not statistically significant(p=0.31,risk ratio(RR)=0.76,95%confidence interval(CI)0.45 to 1.28).However,there were significant differences in the UH closure rate at the age of 6 months(p<0.01,RR=0.55,95%CI 0.41 to 0.75)and the efficacy of preventing protruding umbilici with redundant skin(p=0.049,RR=0.16,95%CI 0.03 to 0.99).Conclusions Although the efficacy of AS on UH compared with observation-only management did not differ in terms of the UH closure rate,the application of AS may be effective for faster UH closure and the prevention of protruding ***,due to the high heterogeneity of the study,further large-scale studies,particularly randomized controlled trials,are warranted to reach a conclusion.

A comprehensive overview of recent developments on the mechanisms and pathways of ferroptosis in cancer: the potential implications for therapeutic strategies in ovarian cancer

Cancer cells adapt to environmental changes and alter their metabolic pathways to promote survival and proliferation. Metabolic reprogramming not only allows tumor cells to maintain a reduction-oxidation balance by rewiring resources for survival, but also causes nutrient addiction or metabolic vulnerability. Ferroptosis is a form of regulated cell death characterized by the iron-dependent accumulation of lipid peroxides. Excess iron in ovarian cancer amplifies free oxidative radicals and drives the Fenton reaction, thereby inducing ferroptosis. However, ovarian cancer is characterized by ferroptosis resistance. Therefore, the induction of ferroptosis is an exciting new targeted therapy for ovarian cancer. In this review, potential metabolic pathways targeting ferroptosis were summarized to promote anticancer effects, and current knowledge and future perspectives on ferroptosis for ovarian cancer therapy were discussed. Two therapeutic strategies were highlighted in this review: directly inducing the ferroptosis pathway and targeting metabolic vulnerabilities that affect ferroptosis. The overexpression of SLC7A11, a cystine/glutamate antiporter SLC7A11 (also known as xCT), is involved in the suppression of ferroptosis. xCT inhibition by ferroptosis inducers (e.g., erastin) can promote cell death when carbon as an energy source of glucose, glutamine, or fatty acids is abundant. On the contrary, xCT regulation has been reported to be highly dependent on the metabolic vulnerability. Drugs that target intrinsic metabolic vulnerabilities (e.g., GLUT1 inhibitors, PDK4 inhibitors, or glutaminase inhibitors) predispose cancer cells to death, which is triggered by decreased nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate generation or increased reactive oxygen species accumulation. Therefore, therapeutic approaches that either directly inhibit the xCT pathway or target metabolic vulnerabilities may be effective in overcoming ferroptosis resistance. Nurses’ Perception of Privacy in the NICU and GCU: A Qualitative Descriptive Study

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the perceptions that determine the nursing practices of nurses working in NICU and GCU to protect the privacy of the affected children and their families, and the perceptions that arise in relation to their practices. Further to obtain information on current issues and future suggestions for nursing practice. Method: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six nurses of Clinical Ladder I or higher currently working in the NICU and GCU, and content analysis was conducted. Result: The study identified five categories, 16 subcategories, and 63 codes: “keeping in mind to act in accordance with the characteristics of the NICU and GCU”, “trying to secure a space only for the affected children and families depending on the situation”, “feeling the need for consideration for the affected children and families”, “feeling puzzled and frustrated through the relationship with families”, “having a dilemma between the environment they want to realize for the affected children and families and the fact that it cannot be realized”. Conclusion: In considering nursing care in NICU and GCU, including consideration for privacy, the need to reflect on daily nursing care and share it with other staff members was suggested.

Long-term outcomes of postgastrectomy syndrome after total laparoscopic distal gastrectomy using the augmented rectangle technique

BACKGROUND For total laparoscopic distal gastrectomies for gastric cancer,the reconstruction method is critical to the clinical outcome of the ***,which reconstruction technique is optimal remains *** originally reported the augmented rectangle technique(ART)as a reconstruction option for total laparoscopic Billroth I ***,little is known about its effect on long-term outcomes,specifically the incidence of postgastrectomy syndrome and its impact on quality of *** To analyze postgastrectomy syndrome and quality of life after ART using the Postgastrectomy Syndrome Assessment Scale-37(PGSAS-37)*** At Juntendo University,a total of 94 patients who underwent ART for Billroth I reconstruction with total laparoscopic distal gastrectomies for gastric cancer between July 2016 and March 2020 completed the PGSAS-37 *** analysis was performed,comparing those 94 ART cases from our institution(ART group)to 909 distal gastrectomy cases with a Billroth I reconstruction from other Japanese institutions who also completed the PGSAS-37 as part of a larger national database(PGSAS group).RESULTS Patients in the ART group had significantly better total symptom scores in all the symptom subscales(i.e.,esophageal reflux,abdominal pain,meal-related distress,indigestion,diarrhea,constipation,and dumping).The loss of body weight was marginally greater for those in the ART group than in the PGSAS group(-9.3%vs-7.9%,P=0.054).The ART group scored significantly lower in their dissatisfaction of ongoing symptoms,during meals,and with daily *** ART for Billroth I reconstruction provided beneficial long-term results for postgastrectomy syndrome and quality of life in patients undergoing total laparoscopic distal gastrectomies for gastric cancer.

Polymer and Polymer Gel of Liquid Crystalline Semiconductors

It prepared a polymer and polymer gel of a liquid crystalline (LC) semiconductor having a 2-phenylnaphthalene moiety and studied their charge carrier transport properties by the time-of-flight technique. It is found that polyacrylate having the mesogenic core moiety of 2-phenylnaphtalene (PNP-acrylate) exhibited a comparable mobility of 10 -4 cm2/Vs in smectic A phase to those in smectic A (SmA) phase of small molecular liquid crystals with the same core moiety, e.g., 6-(4'-octylphenyl)- 2-dodecyloxynaphthalene (8-PNP-O12), and an enhanced mobility up to 10 -3cm2/Vs in the LC-glassy phase at room temperature, when mixed with a small amount of 8-PNP-O12. On the other hand, the polymer gel consisting of 20 wt%-hexamethylenediacrylate (HDA)-based cross-linked polymer and 8-PNP-O12 exhibited no degraded mobility when cross-linked at the mesophase. These results indicate that the polymer and polymer composite of liquid crystalline semiconductors provide us with an easy way to realize a quality organic semiconductor thin film for the immediate device applications.

Acute liver failure caused by drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome associated with hyperferritinemia

Effectiveness of Seprafilm<sup>®</sup>in Preventing Adhesions on Repeated Cesarean Sections

Due to the recent advances in assisted reproductive technology therapy and perinatal care, cesarean sections have been increasingly employed. The aim of this study was to elucidate the effectiveness of Seprafilm® in saving time during fetal deliveries and in minimizing the amount of blood loss in cesarean deliveries. In cases of second cesarean section, our results showed that Seprafilm® significantly reduced the fetal delivery time from 7.5 ± 2.8 to 5.4 ± 2.2 min (p = 0.001). The time required for total surgery was shortened from 45.3 ± 10.0 to 39.6 ± 6.5 min (p = 0.003). The blood loss was diminished from 816.4 ±
