Physical Properties of Liquid Terbium Measured by Levitation Techniques

To understand the nature and behavior of rare earth metals in their liquid phases, accurate values of their physical properties are essential. However, to measure their physical properties, the samples should be maintained in liquid phases for prolonged time, and this raises a formidable challenge. This is mainly explained by their high melting temperatures （e.g., 1629 K for Tb）, high vapor pressure, and the risk of melt contamination with a crucible or support. An electrostatic levitation furnace alleviated these difficulties and allowed the determination of density, surface tension, and viscosity of several metals above their melting temperature. Here, first, the levitation furnace facility and the noncontact diagnostic procedures were briefly discussed, followed by the explanation of their thermophysical property measurements over wide temperature ranges. The density was obtained using an ultraviolet-based imaging technique that allowed excellent illumination, even at elevated temperatures. Over the 1615 to 1880 K temperature span, the density measurements could be expressed as p（T） =7.84 × 10^3 -0.47 （T - Tm）（kg · m^-3） with Tm = 1629 K, yielding a volume expansion coefficient a（T） = 6.0 × 10^-5 （K^-1）. In addition, the surface tension and the viscosity could be determined by inducing a drop oscillation to a molten sample. Using this technique, the surface tension data could be expressed as σ（T） = 8.93 × 10^2 - 0.10 （T - Tm）（mN· m^-1） and those for viscosity as η（T） =0.583 exp [4.1 × 10^4/（RT）] （MPa·s） over the 1690 to 1980 K temperature range

Design and Implementation of a Programming Learning Support System Using the Concepts of Physical Visualization and Serious Gaming

The purpose of this research is the design and implementation of a support system for learning programming. To archive this purpose, in this article, we propose a Puzzle Programming System that uses jigsaw puzzles as an example of the application of physical visualization, which visualizes logical constraints to physical ones. This Puzzle Programming System aims to teach basic programming concepts by presenting the invisible constraints of programming language syntax using the visual constraints of jigsaw puzzle pieces. This system runs on an Apple iPad and was developed using the Unity game engine. We used YAML as a data format for serializing structured data for data management. By inviting high school students to try out a prototype, we could confirm the usefulness of the Puzzle Programming System. The experimental evaluation results also shed light on aspects of the game that need to be redesigned and parts where the visual programming model needs to be modified and expanded.

A Breast Density Classification System for Mammography Considering Reliability Issues in Deep Learning

In a convolutional neural network (CNN) classification model for diagnosing medical images, transparency and interpretability of the model’s behavior are crucial in addition to high classification accuracy, and it is highly important to explicitly demonstrate them. In this study, we constructed an interpretable CNN-based model for breast density classification using spectral information from mammograms. We evaluated whether the model’s prediction scores provided reliable probability values using a reliability diagram and visualized the basis for the final prediction. In constructing the classification model, we modified ResNet50 and introduced algorithms for extracting and inputting image spectra, visualizing network behavior, and quantifying prediction ambiguity. From the experimental results, our proposed model demonstrated not only high classification accuracy but also higher reliability and interpretability compared to the conventional CNN models that use pixel information from images. Furthermore, our proposed model can detect misclassified data and indicate explicit basis for prediction. The results demonstrated the effectiveness and usefulness of our proposed model from the perspective of credibility and transparency.

Effects of Vertical Angle of Conical Punch on Stretch Flangeability of High Strength Steel

To clarify the effects of the vertical angle of a conical punch on stretch flangeability, hole expansion forming tests were conducted. Test results showed that the hole expansion ratio becomes larger as the vertical angle *** also showed that the fracture strain at the fracture location on the hole edge was constant and independent of the vertical angle. This is because the hole expansion ratio was controlled not only by the fracture strain, which is independent of the vertical angle, but also by deformation uniformity along the hole edge. From the result of numerical analyses, it was determined that deformation uniformity depends on the gradient of circumferential stress along the radius direction. When the vertical angle is sharp, the circumferential stress showed a steep decline and the deformation localization was suppressed. Consequently, the hole edge deformed more uniformly and the hole expansion ratio became larger. It is concluded that in order to improve stretch flangeability of high strength steel, it is important to uniformly deform the hole edge by applying a conical punch with a sharp vertical angle.

Effect of Specific Verbal Instructions on the Identification of Pain Location during a Passive Straight Leg Raise Test

Musculoskeletal pain is common. Because pain is subjective, objectively describing it is crucial. However, pain assessment may cause distress in patients;therefore, physical therapists (PTs) should conduct these tests quickly and accurately. Simple and clear instructions are recommended for pain assessment. However, few studies have provided evidence to support this hypothesis. Correspondingly, this study aimed to confirm the effectiveness of specific verbal instructions for pain location during five consecutive Passive Straight Leg Raise (PSLR) tests. The 28 asymptomatic participants (age 27.4 ± 9.6 years) who provided informed consent received five consecutive PSLR tests: three without and two with specific verbal instructions to ascertain pain intensity, quality, and location. The participants drew pain locations on a body chart and described the pain intensity and quality after each test. All participants were interviewed regarding the differences they noted in the presence and absence of specific verbal instructions. Each pain location was classified into one of ten areas for statistical analysis. The proportion of participants who changed the pain location was compared between the tests using McNemar’s test, and the kappa coefficient was confirmed for consistency of pain location. There was a significant difference in the proportion of participants who changed their pain location between the second and third tests and from the third to the fourth test (McNemar’s test: p = 0.003). Kappa coefficients had low consistency (κ = 0.28) just after receiving the specific verbal instructions in the fourth test compared to the third test. Consistency improved in the fifth test (κ = 0.57);93% of the participants answered that the pain location had become clearer. This study revealed the effects of specific verbal instructions in identifying pain locations. Verification of Therapeutic Effects When an Occupational Therapist Walks with a Patient with Moderate Alzheimer’s-Type Dementia: A Case Report—Validity of Clinical Observational Perspective Verified by Changes in Autonomic Nervous System Responses: A Preliminary Study

Background: In actual clinical settings, an occupational therapist (OT) encounters a patient with moderate Alzheimer’s disease (AD) walking with an anxious expression on the ward. The OT walks with the patient and encourages them to look at the symbol tree in the center of the ward. Additionally, when the patient talks to the OT, the OT empathizes with them and responds appropriately. As a result, many patients feel less anxious and become calmer. Therefore, in this study, the OT walked with an elderly female patient in her 80s with moderate AD and measured the patient’s autonomic nervous system responses. The study aimed to verify to what extent the results matched the OT’s clinical observational perspective. Methods: An OT with over 10 years of experience and a good relationship with the patient conducted one-on-one walking sessions with the patient. We divided the sessions into five-time periods: when the patient and OT were sitting on a sofa, and when they were walking. We implemented the same approach to the patient as usual. Therefore, we prompted the patient to look at the symbol tree during the walking session. Additionally, when the patient talked to the OT, the OT empathized and gave appropriate responses. We checked the changes in the patient’s autonomic nervous system responses in each time period. Results: This study showed that when walking with an OT, patient with moderate AD had a significant increase in parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) activity. Therefore, it is suggested that the involvement of professionals such as the environment and the OT during walking training for Alzheimer’s patients may lead to improved mental stability. Conclusion: This study suggests that walking together with an OT may have a positive effect on the PNS of female patient with AD. BACKGROUND： In recent years, surgeons have advocated root or trunk repair of avulsed nerve roots for overall recovery. However, donor nerves pose a major problem, because they do not contain adequate numbers of axons. Moreover, the procedures lead to nerve deficits in the donor nerve following transplantation. OBJECTIVE： To observe whether axonal regeneration occurs by end-to-side neurorrhaphy in the peripheral nerve and spinal cord. DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING： A neuroanatomical, randomized, controlled, animal study was performed at Functional Anatomy Lab in Nagoya University School of Medicine from May 2002 to July 2003. MATERIALS： Fluorogold was purchased from Fluorochrome, LLC, USA. BX50 light microscope and fluorescent microscope were purchased from Olympus, Japan. METHODS： A total of 21 rats were randomly divided into three groups, and the posterior avulsion injury model （C6-8） of the brachial plexus was performed. In the ventral root graft group, the avulsed C7 ventral roots were reanastomosed to the small anterior lateral aspect window of the spinal cord via nerve grafts. In the dorsal root graft group, the C7 dorsal roots were reanastomosed at the small pia mater window of the posterior lateral aspect of the spinal cord via nerve grafts. In the control group, the avulsed nerve roots were not repaired. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES： The nerve grafts were collected from the ventral and dorsal root graft groups, and the C7 proximal nerve end was collected from the control group. Acetylcholinesterase staining was performed on the tissue. Fluorogold retrograde tracing technique was applied to determine the origin of the regenerating axons. RESULTS： Results showed that acetylcholine-positive axons existed in nerve grafts of the ventral and dorsal root graft groups. However, axons were not found in the avulsed nerve roots of the control group.
