Source tectonic dynamics features of Jiuzhaigou Ms 7.0 earthquake in Sichuan Province,China

On August 8, 2017, a Ms 7.0 earthquake occurred 5 km to the west of Jiuzhaigou National Park, causing 25 deaths and injuring 525. The objective of this study was to explore the seismogenic fault of the earthquake and tectonic dynamics of the source rupture. Field investigations, radon activity tests, remote sensing interpretations, and geophysical data analyses were carried out immediately after the earthquake. The Jiuzhaigou earthquake occurred at the intersection of the northern margin of the Minshan uplift belt and the south part of the Wenxian–Maqin fault in the south margin of the West Qinling geosyncline. There are two surface rupture zones trending northwest(NW), which are ground coseismic ruptures caused by concealed earthquake faults. The rupture on the southwest is the structure triggering the earthquake, along the Jiuzhaitiantang–Epicenter–Wuhuahai. The other one on the northeast(Shangsizhai–Zhongcha–Bimang) is a reactivation and extension of the secondary fault trending NW. The source rupture of this earthquake is a strike-slipshear fracture associated with the fault plane trending NW 331° and steeply dipping 75°, which is continuously expanding at both ends. The tectonic dynamics process of the source rupture is that the "Jiuzhaigou protrusion" is left-lateral sheared along the seismogenic fault in the NW direction. Finally, the Maqin fault and the arc fault system at the top of the "Wenxian protrusion" will be gradually broken through sometime in far future, as well as earthquaketriggered landslides will be further occurred along the narrow corridor between the seismogenic faults. The research results revealed the basic geological data and tectonic dynamic mechanism in this earthquake.

Characteristics and failure mechanism of an ancient earthquake-induced landslide with an extremely wide distribution area

The Lamuajue landslide is located in Lamuajue village on the tight bank of the Meigu River, Sichuan Province, China. This landslide is an ancient landslide with an extremely wide distribution area, covering an area of 19 km2 with a maximum width of 5-5 km and an estimated residual volume of 3 × 108 ma. The objectives of this study were to identify the characteristics and failure mechanism of this landslide. In this study, based on field investigations, aerial photography, and profile surveys, the boundary, lithology, structure of the strata, and characteristics of the landslide deposits were determined. A gently angled weak interlayer consisting of shale was the main factor contributing to the occurrence of the Lamuajue landslide. The deposition area can be divided into three zones： zone A is an avalanche deposition area mainly composed of blocks, fragments, and debris with diameters ranging from o.i m to 3 m; zone B is a residual integrated rock mass deposition area with large blocks, boulders and ＂fake bedrock＂; and zone C is a deposition zone of limestone blocks and fragments. Three types of failure mechanism were analyzed and combined to explain the Lamuajue landslide based on the features of the accumulation area. First, a shattering-sliding mechanism caused by earthquakes in zone A. Second, a sliding mechanism along the weak intercalation caused by gravity and water in zone B. Third, a shattering-ejection mechanism generated by earthquakes in zone C. The results provide a distinctive case for the study of gigantic landslides induced by earthquakes, which is very important for understanding and assessing ancient earthquakeinduced landslides.

Chaotic Solitons in Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) Interacting with a Plane Wave

Theoretical analysis of the DNA dynamics reveals that interaction between the single solitons and plane wave implies Smale-horseshoe chaos in the double helices. Solutions of the chaotic solitons are derived from a direct perturbation technique. It is demonstrated that to produce the bounded chaotic solitons, velocities of the solit ons nust be the same and equal to propagation velocity of the plane wave in DNA. The result shows that the DNA structure may be destroyed by the long action of an electromagnetic wave. It also supplies a useful method for controlling the velocities and unboundedness of the DNA motion in a tumour cell by using a plane wave.

Seismogenic fault and topography control on the spatial patterns of landslides triggered by the 2017 Jiuzhaigou earthquake

Jiuzhaigou National Park, located in northwest plateau of Sichuan Province, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of the most popular scenic areas in China. On August 8, 2017, a Mw 6.5 earthquake occurred 5 km to the west of a major scenic area, causing 25 deaths and injuring 525, and the Park was seriously affected. The objective of this study was to explore the controls of seismogenic fault and topographic factors on the spatial patterns of these landslides. Immediately after the main shock, field survey, remote-sensing investigations, and statistical and spatial analysis were undertaken. At least 2212 earthquake-triggered landslides were identified, covering a total area of 11.8 km^2. Thesewere mainly shallow landslides and rock falls. Results demonstrated that landslides exhibited a close spatial correlation with seismogenic faults. More than 85% of the landslides occurred at 2200 to 3700 m elevations. The largest quantity of landslides was recorded in places with local topographic reliefs ranging from 200 to 500 m. Slopes in the range of ~20°-50° are the most susceptible to failure. Landslides occurred mostly on slopes facing east-northeast(ENE), east(E), east-southeast(ESE), and southeast(SE), which were nearly vertical to the orientation of the seismogenic fault slip. The back-slope direction and thin ridge amplification effects were documented. These results provide insights on the control of the spatial pattern of earthquake-triggered landslides modified by the synergetic effect of seismogenic faults and topography.

Prophylaxis of hepatitis B recurrence in post-liver transplantation patients with lamivudine-resistant YMDD mutant

Background The most frequently used therapy for post-transplantation recurrence of hepatitis B virus （HBV） infection is lamivudine, but this drug is associated with a high resistance rate due to YMDD mutant. In preliminary reports, adefovir dipivoxil （ADV） has been shown to have activity against lamivudine-resistant strains of HBV. However, clinical experience in treatment of HBV infection after liver transplantation （LT） is still not entirely clear. This study was aimed to evaluate the prophylactic efficacy of ADV plus hepatitis B immunoglobulin （HBIG） in patients with YMDD mutant before LT. Methods From March 2004 to March 2006, 16 patients with chronic hepatitis B had lamivudine-resistant YMDD mutants detected prior to liver transplantation and received treatment with ADV plus additional intramuscular HBIG after LT as prophylaxis against graft reinfection. Tests for liver function, serum HBsAg, anti-HBs （HBIG）, HBeAg, anti-HBc, anti-HBe, HBV-DNA, and creatinine were assessed pre- or post-liver transplantation. Results The median follow-up of these patients post-liver transplantation was 19.4 months. Fifteen patients survived and one patient died of recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma （HCC）. There was significant difference （10.98% vs. 2.26%, P〈0.05） in YMDD mutant rate between the patients with HBV-DNA over 106 copies/ml and those with HBV-DNA less than 106 copies/mi. Fifteen patients （93.8%） had undetectable HBV-DNA at 4 weeks and 1 （6.3%） at 6 months after LT. No hepatitis B recurrence was detected by persistent testing of HBsAg, HBeAg, and HBV-DNA and no increase of serum creatinine level associated with ADV was observed in any of the patients. Conclusion ADV combined with intramuscular HBIG can effectively prevent patients with pre-transplantation YMDD mutant from HBV recurrence after LT.

A Semiparametric Additive-multiplicative Rates Model for the Weighted Composite Endpoint of Recurrent and Terminal Events

Recurrent event data are commonly encountered in many scientific fields,including biomedical studies,clinical trials and epidemiological surveys,and many statistical methods have been proposed for their *** this paper,we consider to use a weighted composite endpoint of recurrent and terminal events,which is weighted by the severity of each event,to assess the overall effects of covariates on the two types of events.A flexible additive-multiplicative model incorporating both multiplicative and additive effects on the rate function is proposed to analyze such weighted composite event process,and more importantly,the dependence structure among the recurrent and terminal events is left *** the estimation,we construct the unbiased estimating equations by virtue of the inverse probability weighting technique,and the resulting estimators are shown to be consistent and asymptotically normal under some mild regularity *** evaluate the finite-sample performance of the proposed method via simulation studies and apply the proposed method to a set of real data arising from a bladder cancer study.

Vanadium(V) Complexes Containing Unsymmetrical N-Heterocyclic Carbene Ligands: Highly Efficient Synthesis and Catalytic Behavior towards Ethylene/Propylene Copolymerization

The highly efficient method has been developed for the synthesis of NHC·VOCl_(3) containing symmetrical or unsymmetrical Nheterocyclic carbene(NHC) ligands by the transmetallation reaction of NHC·AgCl with VOCl_(3).The total isolated yield of VOCl_(3)[1,3-(2,4,6-Me_(3)C_(6)H_(2))_(2)(NCH=)_(2)C:](V4') reached 86% by transmetallation reaction,which is much higher than that(48%) by direct coordination *** methodology has also been used to synthesize the novel vanadium complexes containing unsymmetrical NHC ligands of VOCl_(3)[PhCH_(2)NCH=CHNR)C:](V5',R=2,4,6-Me_(3)C_(6)H_(2);V6',R=2,4-Me_(2)-6-Ph-C_(6)H_(2);V7',R=2,6-^(i)Pr_(2)-C_(6)H_(3)) with high yield,which could not be obtained by direct coordination *** catalytic activity and copolymerization ability would be improved by introducing unsymmetrical NHC ligands due to their less steric bulky *** vanadium complex V5' containing unsymmetrical NHC ligand exhibits higher catalytic activity(3.7×10^(5)g_(copolymer)·mol^(-1) of V·h^(-1)) than that of V4' containing symmetrical NHC ***,the higher propylene incorporation ratio(45.6 mol%) in the copolymers of ethylene with propylene could be obtained by using V5' than that(39.9%) by using V4'.The results would provide a highly efficient strategy for the synthesis of early transition metal complexes containing versitile NHC ligands,affording the catalyst with both high catalytic activity and copolymerization ability for the synthesis of high performance polyolefin elastomers.
