Weight change and all-cause and cause-specific mortality: A 25-year follow-up study

Background: Whether the dynamic weight change is an independent risk factor for mortality remains controversial. This study aimed to examine the association between weight change and risk of all-cause and cause-specific mortality based on the Linxian Nutrition Intervention Trial (NIT) cohort.Methods: Body weight of 21,028 healthy residents of Linxian, Henan province, aged 40-69 years was measured two times from 1986 to 1991. Outcome events were prospectively collected up to 2016. Weight maintenance group (weight change <2 kg) or stable normal weight group was treated as the reference. Cox proportional hazard model was performed to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) to estimate the risk of mortality.Results: A total of 21,028 subjects were included in the final analysis. Compared with the weight maintenance group, subjects with weight loss ≥2 kg had an increased risk of death from all-cause (HRAll-cause = 1.14, 95% CI: 1.09-1.19,P <0.001), cancer (HRCancer = 1.12, 95% CI: 1.03-1.21,P = 0.009), and heart disease (HRHeart diseases = 1.21, 95% CI: 1.11-1.31,P <0.001), whereas subjects with weight gain ≥5 kg had 11% (HRCancer = 0.89, 95% CI: 0.79-0.99,P = 0.033) lower risk of cancer mortality and 23% higher risk of stroke mortality (HRStroke = 1.23,95% CI: 1.12-1.34,P <0.001). For the change of weight status, both going from overweight to normal weight and becoming underweight within 5 years could increase the risk of total death (HROverweight to normal = 1.18, 95% CI: 1.09-1.27; HRBecoming underweight = 1.35, 95% CI: 1.25-1.46) and cancer death (HROverweight to normal = 1.20, 95% CI: 1.04-1.39; HRBecoming underweight = 1.44, 95% CI: 1.24-1.67), while stable overweight could increase the risk of total death (HRStable overweight = 1.11, 95% CI: 1.05-1.17) and death from stroke (HRStable overweight = 1.44, 95% CI: 1.33-1.56). Investigating the mechanism of action of Bu-yang-huan-Wu decoction in treating bleomycin-Induced pulmonary fibrosis through the epithelial-mesenchymal transition pathway

Background:To explore the effects and mechanisms of Bu-yang-huan-Wu Decoction on pulmonary fibrosis in mice.Methods:Forty-five C57BL/6J mice were randomly divided into three groups:Control,Model,and Bu-yang-huan-Wu Decoction.Pulmonary fibrosis was elicited in mice through a solitary intratracheal administration of 2.5 mg/kg bleomycin.For the control group,mice were given a solitary intratracheal administration of a comparable volume of PBS.Treatment began on the first day after the successful model establishment and lasted for 21 days.The survival rate and body weight of the mice were recorded daily,and on the 22nd day,bronchoalveolar lavage fluid was collected to determine total cells and total protein.The wet/dry weight ratio of lung tissue and hydroxyproline were measured.Lung tissue pathology was observed using hematoxylin and eosin staining and Masson staining.The mRNA expression of epithelial-mesenchymal transition-related proteins(E-cadherin and vimentin)was detected by RT-qPCR,and their protein expression was analyzed by western blot.Results:Compared to the model group,the Bu-yang-huan-Wu Decoction treatment notably enhanced both the survival rate and body weight in pulmonary fibrosis mice,significantly reduced lung tissue wet/dry weight ratio,total cells,and protein in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid,and hydroxyproline content.The pathological morphology of lung tissue was significantly improved,with increased expression of the epithelial cell marker E-cadherin mRNA and protein,and decreased expression of the mesenchymal cell marker vimentin mRNA and protein.Conclusion:Bu-yang-huan-Wu Decoction can improve the degree of bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis in mice by inhibiting epithelial-mesenchymal transition.

In this paper,we study a class of Finsler metrics defined by a vector field on a gradient Ricci soliton.We obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for these Finsler metrics on a compact gradient Ricci soliton to be of isotropic S-curvature by establishing a new integral inequality.Then we determine the Ricci curvature of navigation Finsler metrics of isotropic S-curvature on a gradient Ricci soliton generalizing result only known in the case when such soliton is of Einstein type.As its application,we obtain the Ricci curvature of all navigation Finsler metrics of isotropic S-curvature on Gaussian shrinking soliton.

Identifying coronary artery bypass grafting patients at high risk for adverse long-term prognosis using serial health-related quality of life assessments

Background: Patients who undergo coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) are known to be at a significant risk of experiencing long-term adverse events, emphasizing the importance of regular assessments. Evaluating health-related quality of life (HRQoL) serves as a direct method to gauge prognosis. Our objective is to ascertain the prognostic significance of consecutive HRQoL assessments using the Physical Component Summary (PCS) and Mental Component Summary (MCS) derived from the Short-Form 36 (SF-36) health survey in CABG patients.Methods: The study population consisted of 433 patients who underwent isolated elective CABG at Fuwai Hospital between 2012 and 2013. SF-36 assessments were conducted during both the hospitalization period and follow-up. The primary endpoint of the study was all-cause mortality, while the secondary outcome was a composite measure including death, myocardial infarction, stroke, and repeat revascularization. We assessed the relationships between the PCS and MCS at baseline, as well as their changes during the first 6 months after the surgery (referred to as ΔPCS and ΔMCS, respectively), and the observed outcomes.Results: The patients were followed for an average of 6.28 years, during which 35 individuals (35/433, 8.1%) died. After adjusting for clinical variables, it was observed that baseline MCS scores (hazard ratio [HR] for a 1-standard deviation [SD] decrease, 1.57; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.07–2.30) and ΔMCS (HR for a 1-SD decrease, 1.67; 95% CI, 1.09–2.56) were associated with all-cause mortality. However, baseline PCS scores and ΔPCS did not exhibit a significant relationship with all-cause mortality. Notably, there was a dose-response relationship observed between ΔMCS and the likelihood of all-cause mortality (HRs for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th quartiles compared to the 1st quartile, 0.33, 0.45 and 0.11, respectively).Conclusions: Baseline MCS and changes in MCS were independent predictors for long-term mortality of CABG. Renewable biosynthesis of isoprene from wastewater through a synthetic biology approach:the role of individual organic compounds

The biosynthesis of isoprene offers a more sustainable alternative to fossil fuel-based approaches,yet its success has been largely limited to pure organic compounds and the cost remains a challenge.This study proposes a waste-to-wealth strategy for isoprene biosynthesis utilizing genetically engineered E.coli bacteria to convert organic waste from real food wastewater.The impact of organic compounds present in wastewater on E.coli growth and isoprene production was systematically investigated.The results demonstrated that with filtration pretreatment of wastewater,isoprene yield,and production achieved 115 mg/g COD and 7.1 mg/(L·h),respectively.Moreover,even without pretreatment,isoprene yield only decreased by~24%,indicating promising scalability.Glucose,maltose,glycerol,and lactate are effective substrates for isoprene biosynthesis,whereas starch,protein,and acetate do not support E.coli growth.The optimum C/N ratio for isoprene production was found to be 8:1.Furthermore,augmenting essential nutrients in wastewater elevated the isoprene yield increased to 159 mg/g COD.The wastewater biosynthesis significantly reduced the cost(44%–53%decrease,p-value<0.01)and CO_(2)emission(46%–55%decrease,p-value<0.01)compared with both sugar fermentation and fossil fuel–based refining.This study introduced a more sustainable and economically viable approach to isoprene synthesis,offering an avenue for resource recovery from wastewater.

Effect of Heat Treatment on Microstructure and Mechanical Behavior of Cu-Bearing 316L Stainless Steel Produced by Selective Laser Melting

Cu-bearing stainless steels(SSs)with high strength,excellent plasticity,and effective antimicrobial properties hold significant potential for applications in the marine industry.In this study,Cu-bearing SSs with copper ranging from 0 to 6.0 wt%were successfully prepared using selective laser melting(SLM)technology.For the Cu-bearing SSs with different copper contents,the effect of heat treatment on the microstructural and mechanical behaviors was studied systematically.Microstructural observations revealed that the subgrain size of Cu-bearing SSs increased with heat treatment at 500℃ and 700℃ for 6 h.Furthermore,the tensile strength and elongation increased after the heat treatment temperature due to the combined effect of dislocations,twins,andε-Cu precipitated phases.Notably,after heat treatment at 700℃,the SLM4.5Cu sample exhibited an abnormal rise in tensile strength and elongation.This finding suggests that the diffusion strengthening caused byε-Cu precipitates exceeded the stacking fault energy.Consequently,the tensile strength and elongation reached 693.32 MPa and 56.94%,respectively.This work provides an efficient approach for preparing Cu-bearing SSs with exceptional strength and plasticity.

Intelligent representation method of image flatness for cold rolled strip

Real flatness images are the bases for flatness detection based on machine vision of cold rolled strip.The characteristics of a real flatness image are analyzed,and a lightweight strip location detection(SLD)model with deep semantic segmentation networks is established.The interference areas in the real flatness image can be eliminated by the SLD model,and valid information can be retained.On this basis,the concept of image flatness is proposed for the first time.An image flatness representation(IFAR)model is established on the basis of an autoencoder with a new structure.The optimal structure of the bottleneck layer is 16×16×4,and the IFAR model exhibits a good representation effect.Moreover,interpretability analysis of the representation factors is carried out,and the difference and physical meaning of the representation factors for image flatness with different categories are analyzed.Image flatness with new defect morphologies(bilateral quarter waves and large middle waves)that are not present in the original dataset are generated by modifying the representation factors of the no wave image.Lastly,the SLD and IFAR models are used to detect and represent all the real flatness images on the test set.The average processing time for a single image is 11.42 ms,which is suitable for industrial applications.The research results provide effective methods and ideas for intelligent flatness detection technology based on machine vision.

Cadaverine and putrescine exposure influence carbon and nitrogen cycling genes in water and sediment of the Yellow River

The response patterns of microbial functional genes involved in biogeochemical cycles to cadaver decay is a central topic of recent environmental sciences.However,the response mechanisms and pathways of the functional genes associated with the carbon(C)and nitrogen(N)cycling to cadaveric substances such as cadaverine and putrescine remain unclear.This study explored the variation of functional genes associated with C fixation,C degradation and N cycling and their influencing factors under cadaverine,putrescine and mixed treatments.Our results showed only putrescine significantly increased the alpha diversity of C fixation genes,while reducing the alpha diversity of N cycling genes in sediment.For the C cycling,the mixed treatment significantly decreased the total abundance of reductive acetyl-CoA pathway genes(i.e.,acsB and acsE)and lig gene linked to lignin degradation in water,while only significantly increasing the hydroxypropionate-hydroxybutylate cycle(i.e.,accA)gene abundance in sediment.For the N cycling,mixed treatment significantly decreased the abundance of the nitrification(i.e.,amoB),denitrification(i.e.,nirS3)genes in water and the assimilation pathway gene(i.e.,gdhA)in sediment.Environmental factors(i.e.,total carbon and total nitrogen)were all negatively associated with the genes of C and N cycling.Therefore,cadaverine and putrescine exposure may inhibit the pathway in C fixation and N cycling,while promoting C degradation.These findings can offer some new insight for the management of amine pollution caused by animal cadavers.

Hydrogen storage thermodynamics and kinetics of as-cast Ce-Mg-Ni-based alloy

The reaction kinetics of alloys based on magnesium are known to be greatly improved by the partial substitution of Mg with rare earths and transition metals,particularly Ni.The enhanced superficial hydrogen dissociation rate,the weakened Mg-H bond and the lower activation energy following element replacement are thought to be related to the better performance.The experimental alloys Ce5Mg_(95-x)Ni_(x)(x=5,10,15)were smelted by the vacuum induction melting.The phase transformation and structural evolution of experimental alloys before and after reaction with hydrogen were char-acterized by X-ray diffraction,scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy.The cast specimens contain CeMg_(12),Mg and Mg_(2)Ni phases,and the increase in Ni content results in an obvious growth of Mg_(2)Ni phase.The isothermal and non-isothermal hydrogenation and dehydrogenation kinetics of the experimental specimens were investi-gated using the Sievert apparatus,differential scanning calorimetry and thermal gravimetric analyzer.The activation energy may be calculated using the Arrhenius and Kissinger equations.The experimental alloys have been shown to have good activation properties,with a reversible hydriding and dehydriding capacities of around 5.0 wt.%in the first cycle.The initial dehydrogenation temperature of MgH_(2) decreases from 557.5 to 537.7 K with changing Ni content from 5 to 15 at.%.The dehydrogenation activation energy also reduces from 77.09 to 62.96 kJ/mol,which explains the improved hydrogen storage performance caused by Ni substitution.It can be shown that the impact of Ni on the decomposition enthalpy of MgH_(2) is quite modest,with the absolute enthalpy(ΔHr)only decreasing from 78.48 to 76.15 kJ/mol.

Experimental Study on Towing Characteristics of Composite Bucket Wellhead Platform

With the rapid development of large-scale development of marginal oilfields in China,simple wellhead platforms that are simple in structure and easy to install have become an inevitable choice in the process of oilfield development.However,traditional simple wellhead platforms are often discarded after a single use.In pursuit of a more costeffective approach to developing marginal oilfields,this paper proposes a new offshore oil field development facility—an integrated bucket foundation for wellhead platform.To verify the safety of its towing behavior and obtain the dynamic response characteristics of the structure,this paper takes a bucket integrated bucket foundation for wellhead platform with a diameter of 40 m as the research object.By combining physical model tests and numerical simulations,it analyzes the static stability and dynamic response characteristics of the structure during towing,complete with the effects of the draft,wave height,wave period,and towing point height,which produce the dynamic responses of the structure under different influence factors,such as roll angle,pitch angle,heave acceleration and towing force as well as the sensibility to transport variables.The results show that the integrated bucket foundation for wellhead platform is capable of self-floating towing,and its movement is affected by the local environment,which will provide a reference for actual projects.
