Multi-omics-driven development of alternative crops for natural rubber production

Natural rubber(NR)is an irreplaceable biopolymer of economic and strategic importance owing to its unique physical and chemical properties.The Parárubber tree(Hevea brasiliensis(Willd.ex A.Juss.)Müll.Arg.)is currently the exclusive commercial source of NR,and it is primarily grown in plantations restricted to the tropical and subtropical areas of Southeast Asia.However,current Parárubber production barely meets the sharply increasing global industrial demand for rubber.Petroleum-based synthetic rubber(SR)has been used to supplement the shortage of NR but its industrial performance is not comparable to that of NR.Thus,there is an urgent need to develop new productive rubber crops with broader environmental adaptability.This review summarizes the current research progress on alternative rubberproducing plants,including horticultural plants(Taraxacum kok-saghyz Rodin and Lactuca L.species),woody plants(Parthenium argentatum A.Gray and Eucommia ulmoides Oliv.),and other plant species with potential for NR production.With an emphasis on the molecular basis of NR biosynthesis revealed by a multi-omics approach,we highlight new integrative strategies and biotechnologies for exploring the mechanism of NR biosynthesis with a broader scope,which may accelerate the breeding and improvement of new rubber crops.

Strategies and Research Progress of Chinese Medicine in Prevention and Treatment of Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy

Diabetic peripheral neuropathy （DPN） seriously affects the quality of life in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. This paper reviews the role of Chinese medicine in the main treatment goal of DPN, including protecting pancreatic β-cells, in the use of antioxidation therapy to delay disease progression, and in the endpoint of neural repair and regeneration. We propose that protecting the body from injury caused by high glucose and oxidative stress, and promoting repair and regeneration of nerves should be the research direction for the prevention and treatment of DPN.

Understanding the structure and function of life requires the study of its basic constituent unit—cells.Cell bio-function depends largely on the coordinated expression of different genes.Traditional sequencing methods(such as DNA sequencing,and bulk RNA-seq)are performed on cell populations or tissue samples,in which biological differences between cells can be easily obscured by sample averaging and technical noises.Single-cell sequencing,an emerging technique in recent years,contributes extensively to understanding biological phenomena and studying the mechanism of diseases.Sequencing the genome of individual cells could reveal gene mutations,while single-cell transcriptome sequencing helps uncover the expression variability of genes,and most importantly,heterogeneous cells from the same samples.In this review,we will give an overview of the single-cell sequencing technique and its current applications in one of the most popular research fields:neuroscience research.

Influence analysis of calculated horizontally layered soil parameters on grounding parameters

Calculated parameters(soil layer resistivity,soil layer thickness,and the number of soil layers)of horizontally layered soil are usually obtained based on the measured apparent resistivity under different measurement distances,which are significant for the design,operation,and maintenance of grounding grids.Most existing calculation methods of soil parameters are just trying to make the calculation results approach the measurement data,ignoring the relationship among measurement data,the calculated soil parameters,and grounding parameters,which would increase the workload of the measurement.To better balance the distance range of the measurement data and the influence of the calculated horizontally layered soil on grounding parameters,this paper systematically studies the relationship among measured apparent soil resistivity,calculated horizontally layered soil parameters,and grounding parameters.The basic theories of apparent resistivity measurement,soil parameter calculation,and grounding parameter calculation are given,the influence of soil layer thickness on the measured apparent resistivity is studied,and the influence of the calculated soil parameters on the grounding resistance of different grounding models is analysed.Based on different scales of grounding grids,the results give a corresponding reference distance range of measured apparent soil resistivity.Therefore,this paper can help decrease the workload of soil resistivity measurement during grounding parameters analysis,which has far-reaching engineering significance.

Exergy and exergoeconomic analyses for integration of aromatics separation with aromatics upgrading

Methanol to aromatics produces multiple products,resulting in a limited selectivity of xylene.Aromatics upgrading is an effective way to produce more valuable xylene product,and different feed ratios generate discrepant product distributions.This work integrates the aromatics separation with toluene disproportionation,transalkylation of toluene and trimethylbenzene,and isomerization of xylene and trimethylbenzene.Exergy and exergoeconomic analyses are conducted to give insights in the splitting ratios of benzene,toluene and heavy aromatics for aromatics upgrading.First,a detailed simulation model is developed in Aspen HYSYS.Then,300 splitting ratio sets of benzene and toluene for conversion are studied to investigate the process performances.The results indicate that there are different preferences for the splitting ratios of benzene and toluene in terms of exergy and exergoeconomic performances.The process generates lower total exergy destruction when the splitting ratio of toluene varies between 0.07 and 0.18,and that of benzene fluctuates between 0.55 and 0.6.Nevertheless,the process presents lower total product unit cost with the splitting ratio of toluene less than 0.18 and that of benzene fluctuating between 0.44 and 0.89.Besides,it is found that distillation is the biggest contributor to the total exergy destruction,accounting for 94.97%.

Theoretical uncertainties of(d,^(3)He)and(^(3)He,d)reactions owing to the uncertainties of optical model potentials

The theoretical uncertainties of single proton transfer cross sections of the(^(3)He,d)and(d,^(3)He)reactions,owing to the uncertainties of the entrance-and exit-channel optical model potentials,are examined with the^(30)Si(^(3)He,d)^(31)P,^(13)B(d,^(3)He)^(12)Be,and^(34)S(^(3)He,d)^(35)Cl reactions at incident energies of 25,46,and 25 MeV,respectively,within the framework of the distorted wave Born approximation.The differential cross sections at the first peaks in the angular distributions of these reactions are found to have uncertainties of approximately 5%,owing to the uncertainties in the optical model potentials from 20,000 calculations of randomly sampled parameters.This amount of uncertainty is found to be nearly independent of the angular momentum transfer and the target masses within the studied range of incident energies.Uncertainties in the single proton spectroscopic factors obtained by matching the theoretical and experimental cross sections at different scattering angles are also discussed.

Progress and Perspectives of Hollow Multishelled Structures

Hollow multishelled structure(HoMs)has drawn tremendous attention due to its abundant attractive properties and promising applications.However,for a long time,the limited synthesis method hindered the development of HoMs.The sequential templating approach developed by our group,has greatly enriched its composition and'structure diversity.The progress in HoMS synthesis promotes the discovery of its characteristics as well as widens its application area.Typicall,the recently explored temporal-spatial ordering characteristic of HoMS has shown great promise in drug delivery and cascade catalysis application areas.Here,we summarize the current development progress of HoMS in the aspects of both synthesis and application,with a focus discussion on how to shape its application performance by manipulating its composition and structure features.In addition,we discuss the current challenges and providethe future potentials holdingfor HoMs.

Cognitive deficiency,parental relationship,and coping strategies are related with anxiety and depression among parents of children with epilepsy

Background:The diagnosis of epilepsy in a child often and understandably causes psychological adjustment difficulties in the parents.To help parents of children with epilepsy cope with stress,it is important to understand how parents cope with the sickness of their child.The objective of this study was to assess factors related to the state of anxiety and depression among parents of children with epilepsy.Methods:The present study was a cross-sectional study,and the data were collected through an anonymous,Internet-based survey platform between October 2018 and October 2019 from 250 participants aged 22-65 years.Participants were invited to fill questionnaires include socioeconomic questionnaire,anxiety,depression,and coping strategies scale.Result:Among the parents of children with epilepsy,48.8%(122/250)had depressive symptoms(Patient Health Questionnaire-9[PHQ-9]score>4)and 46.4%(116/250)had anxiety symptoms(7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder[GAD-7]score>5).Depression among parents of children with epilepsy was significantly associated with comorbidity(odds ratio[OR]=0.392,95%CI=0.182-0.846),a poor parental relationship(OR=0.283,95%CI=0.130-0.614),positive coping(OR=0.947,95%CI=0.903-0.992),and negative coping(OR=1.287,95%CI=1.179-1.405).Anxiety among parents of children with epilepsy was significantly associated with a poor parental relationship(OR=0.416,95%CI=0.207-0.835)and negative coping(OR=1.155,95%CI 1.087-1.228).Conclusions:The present study indicates the importance of couple support and providing effective coping to make parents of children with epilepsy more resilient in the presence of negative life events,especially for parents of children with comorbidity with cognitive deficiency.

A simple technique for suprachoroidal space injection of triamcinolone acetonide in treatment of macular edema

AIM:To introduce a simple resistance controlled suprachoroidal space(SCS)injection technique using a disposable 30-gauge needle connected to a 1 m L syringe and evaluate the effectiveness and applicability of this technique in the treatment of macular edema.METHODS:A total of 20 patients with various types of macular edema were subjected to a resistance controlled SCS injection of triamcinolone acetonide(TA)with a disposable 30-gauge needle connected to a 1 m L syringe.This technique allows the easy and smooth injection of the TA only once the tip of the needle reached the potential SCS which was indicated by the lower resistance on the plunger.The main outcome measures were anterior segment spectral-domain optical coherence tomography(AS-OCT)measurements post-operation immediately and central subfield thickness(CST),best-corrected visual acuity(BCVA),and intraocular pressure(IOP)measurements at 3mo postoperation.RESULTS:AS-OCT examination showed the expansion of the SCS near the injection site immediately after SCS injection.At three months of follow-up,as compared to the baseline,the mean CST was significantly decreased from 535.0±157.24 to 319.55±127.30μm(P<0.001),the mean BCVA was significantly improved from 1.05±0.41 to 0.73±0.41 log MAR(P<0.001),and the mean IOP was not significantly different,from 15.05±2.54 to 15.85±3.60 mm Hg(P=0.185).Any complication related to the injection procedure including cataract,choroidal and retinal hemorrhage,retinal detachment,or endophthalmitis was not observed in this study.CONCLUSION:The simple and minimally invasive technique of SCS injection of TA with a disposable 30-gauge needle connected to a 1 m L syringe is useful and applicable for macular edema.

Surface effect induced phase transformation by Mn removal during annealing and its textures in cold-rolled high manganese transformation-induced plasticity steel

The surface effect induced transformation texture during vacuum annealing of cold-rolled high manganese transformation-induced plasticity(TRIP)steels was studied.Due to Mn removal occurring at the surface layer,γ→δdiffusional phase transformation leads to the formation of hard pancake-shaped ferrite grains due to solution strengthening at the surface and the centre layer remains as austenite+martensite after annealing.In the case of slow heating,{112}/{111}textures for the surface ferrite were strengthened with the increase in temperature and holding time,indicating an inheritance of rolling textures.By increasing the heating rate of annealing,the rotated cube texture was developed in surface ferrite.This kind of multiphase sandwich structure with hard ferrite surface layer and tough austenite dominant centre can increase tensile strength and should also improve deep drawing properties,therefore providing new possibility of controlling properties for the application of high manganese TRIP steel.
