Land surface temperature(LST)retrieval from thermal infrared(TIR)remote sensing image requires atmospheric and land surface emissivity(LSE)data that are sometimes *** overcome this problem,a hybrid algorithm is developed to retrieve LST without atmospheric correction and LSE data input,by combining the split-window(SW)and temperature–emissivity separation(TES)*** SW algorithm is used to estimate surface-emitting radiance in adjacent TIR bands,and such radiance is applied to the TES algorithm to retrieve LST and *** hybrid algorithm is implemented on five TIR bands of the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer(ASTER).Analysis shows that the hybrid algorithm can estimate LST and LSE with an error of 0.5–1.5 K and 0.007–0.020,***,the LST error of the hybrid algorithm is equivalent to that of the original ASTER TES algorithm,involving 1%–2%uncertainty in atmospheric *** hybrid algorithm is validated using ground-measured LST at six sites and ASTER LST products,indicating that the temperature difference between the ASTER TES algorithm and the hybrid algorithm is 1.4 K and about 2.5–3.5 K compared to the ground ***,the hybrid algorithm is applied to at two places.

We select a large volume-limited sample of low surface brightness galax- ies （LSBGs, 2021） to investigate in detail their statistical properties and their dif- ferences from high surface brightness galaxies （HSBGs, 3639）. The distributions of stellar masses of LSBGs and HSBGs are nearly the same and they have the same me- dian values. Thus this volume-limited sample has good completeness and is further removed from the effect of stellar masses on their other properties when we compare LSBGs to HSBGs. We found that LSBGs tend to have lower stellar metallicities and lower effective dust attenuations, indicating that they have lower dust than HSBGs. The LSBGs have relatively higher stellar mass-to-light ratios, higher gas fractions, lower star forming rates （SFRs）, and lower specific SFRs than HSBGs. Moreover, with the decreasing surface brightness, gas fraction increases, but the SFRs and spe- cific SFRs decrease rapidly for the sample galaxies. This could mean that the star formation histories between LSBGs and HSBGs are different, and HSBGs may have stronger star forming activities than LSBGs.

AIM To identify a panel of biomarkers that can distinguish between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH), and explore molecular mechanism involved in the process of developing NASH from *** Biomarkers may differ during stages of NAFLD. Urine and blood were obtained from non-diabetic subjects with NAFLD and steatosis, with normal liver function(n = 33), from patients with NASH, with abnormal liver function(n = 45), and from healthy age and sex-matched controls(n = 30). Samples were subjected to metabolomic analysis to identify potential non-invasive biomarkers. Differences in urinary metabolic profiles were analyzed using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry with principal component analysis and partial least squares-discriminate *** Compared with NAFLD patients, patients with NASH had abnormal liver function and high serum lipid concentrations. Urinary metabonomics found differences in 31 metabolites between these two groups, including differences in nucleic acids and amino acids. Pathway analysis based on overlapping metabolites showed that pathways of energy and amino acid metabolism, as well as the pentose phosphate pathway, were closely associated with pathological processes in NAFLD and *** These findings suggested that a panel of biomarkers could distinguish between NAFLD and NASH, and could help to determine the molecular mechanism involved in the process of developing NASH from NAFLD. The precedence effect is a prerequisite for faithful sound localization in a complex auditory environment, and is a physiological phenomenon in which the auditory system selectively suppresses the directional information from echoes. Here we investigated how neurons in the inferior colliculus respond to the paired sounds that produce precedence-effect illusions, and whether their firing behavior can be modulated through inhibition with gamma-aminobutyric acid （GABA）. We recorded extracellularly from 36 neurons in rat inferior colliculus under three conditions： no injection, injection with saline, and injection with gamma-aminobutyric acid. The paired sounds that produced precedence effects were two identical 4-ms noise bursts, which were delivered contralaterally or ipsilaterally to the recording site. The normalized neural responses were measured as a function of different inter-stimulus delays and half-maximal interstimulus delays were acquired. Neuronal responses to the lagging sounds were weak when the inter-stimulus delay was short, but increased gradually as the delay was lengthened. Saline injection produced no changes in neural responses, but after local gamma-arninobutyric acid application, responses to the lagging stimulus were suppressed. Application of gamma-aminobutyric acid affected the normalized response to lagging sounds, independently of whether they or the paired sounds were contralateral or ipsilateral to the recording site. These observations suggest that local inhibition by gamma-aminobutyric acid in the rat inferior colliculus shapes the neural responses to lagging sounds, and modulates the precedence effect.

Definition of water exchange zone between the Bohai Sea and Yellow Sea and the effect of winter gale on it

The marine dynamic environment of the Bohai Sea and the Yellow Sea in the winter of 2006 is simulated by the Regional Ocean Modelling System（ROMS） marine numerical model. Using the simulated temperature and salinity, the water exchange zone between the Bohai Sea and Yellow Sea is defined through the Spectral Mixture Model（SMM）. The influence of winter gales on the water exchange is also discussed. It is found that the Yellow Sea water masses in winter are distributed in a ＂tongue＂ shape in the Bohai Strait region, the water exchange zone presents a zonal distribution along the margin of the ＂tongue＂, with a tendency of running from northwest to southeast, and the water exchange is intensified at the tip of the ＂tongue＂. Besides, the coastal area in the northernmost Yellow Sea does not participate in the water exchange between the Bohai Sea and Yellow Sea. The result shows that the winter gale events play a role in enhancing the water exchange. It is specifically shown by the facts： the Yellow Sea warm current is enhanced to intrude the Bohai Sea by the gale process; the water exchange zone extends into the Bohai Sea; the water exchange belt in the southern part becomes wider; the mixture zone of river runoff with the Bohai Sea water upon its entry is enlarged and shifts northwards. Within two days after the gale process, the exchange zone retreats toward the Yellow Sea and the exchange zone resulted from the Huanghe River（Yellow River） runoff also shrinks back shoreward.

Eggplant （Solanum melongena） is an economically important vegetable requiring investigation into its various genomic functions. The current limitation in the investigation of genomic function in eggplant is the lack of effective tools available for conducting functional assays. Virus-induced gene silencing （VIGS） has played a critical role in the functional genetic analyses. In this paper, TRV-mediated VIGS was successfully elicited in eggplant. We first cloned the CDS sequence of PDS （PHYTOENE DESATURASE） in eggplant and then silenced the PDS gene. Photo-bleaching was shown on the newly-developed leaves four weeks after agroinoculation, indicating that VIGS can be used to silence genes in eggplant. To further illustrate the reliability of VIGS in eggplant, we selected Chl H, Su and CLA1 as reporters to elicit VIGS using the high-pressure spray method. Suppression of Chl H and Su led to yellow leaves, while the depletion of CLA1 resulted in albino. In conclusion, four genes, PDS, Chl H, Su （Sulfur）, CLA1, were down-regulated significantly by VIGS, indicating that the VIGS system can be successfully applied in eggplant and is a reliable tool for the study of gene function.
