Forced by different wind stress as well as different surface heat flux, three 10 year integrations using L3.T63.oceanic GCM are carried out. The annual mean state, seasonal cycle and interannual variability of the upper ocean temperature over the tropical Pacific are examined. In the case of annual mean state of sea surface temperature, relults from D15c and D15e are alike and have good agreement with NCEP data. Defects in D15d include the excessively higher SST over warm pool region and higher SST along the eastern coast. The corresponding westward displacement of cold water is also noticeable. All the experiments represent the annual cycle of SST in the eastern equatorial Pacific while the amplitudes are weaker compared to NCEP data. The intensity of interannual variability of SST in eastern equatorial Pacific is markedly improved D15d and is perfectly comparative with that from NCEP data. The eastward propagations of the interannual variability of upper ocean heat content along the equator in 1982/1983.E1 Nio are well represented in all experiments. On the onset stage of 1982/1983.E1 Nio, the modeled interannual variabilities of SST and heat content are generally the same among all experiments. It is the weakest interannual variability of surface heat flux, which damps SST variability during the mature phase of E1 Nio, that results in a most intensified SST variability in D15d.

The idea and main theoretical results of the global analysis theory of climate system are briefly summarized in this paper. A theorem on the global behavior of climate system is given, i.e. there exists a global attractor in the dynamical equations of climate, any state of climate system will be evolved into the global attractor as time increases, indicating the nonlinear adjustment process of climate system to external forcing. The different effects of external forcing, dissipation and nonlinearity on the long-term behavior of solutions are pointed out, and some main applications of the global analysis theory are also introduced. Especially, three applications, the adjustment and evolution processes of climate, the principle of numerical model design and the optimally numerical integration, are discussed.

Taking one-dimensional shallow water wave equation as an example, a comparative analysis on the computational stability related to the short-range motion of atmosphere and ocean is carried out for the conservative and nonconservative scheme, and it is pointed out that the computational stability of conservative scheme is absolutely different from that of the nonconservative scheme. The relationship between the short-range motion of atmosphere and ocean and the conservative and nonconservative scheme is further discussed. The constructed conservative scheme is proved to be stable by the numerical experiment for the short-range motion of atmosphere and ocean while the CTCS scheme is unstable. So that the conservative scheme for the solution of this kind of problem has more advantages.

Aerosol samples for PM2.5 were collected in Beijing for 3. consecutive days from March to April 2001 using an IMPROVE Sampler. Concentrations of 20 elements in PM2.5 were determined using a PIXE method. Results show that the average mineral dust concentration of PM2.5 was 14.6 mg/m3.during the observation period. On the sand-dust event days of March 21 and April 10, dust PM2.5 mass concentrations were 62.4 and 54.1 mg/m3. respectively. These demonstrate that fine particle pollution by dust event in Beijing was very severe. The enrichment factors of S and Cu reached minimums on the dusty days and were high on the non-dusty days. It is considered that enrichment factors of elements in PM2.5, which are associated with human activities, can probably provide an effective method to distinguish local sources from external sources of dust. Factor analysis on the chemical composition in PM2.5 shows that sources of crustal matters, anthropogenic emission, and oil combustion contributed to PM2.5 levels in air in the springtime of 2001 in Beijing.

The moist vorticity vector (MVV), defined as (ζa×▽qv)/ρ introduced by Gao et al. is used to study a heavy rainfall event in North china. The MVV has zonal, meridional and vertical components in a three-dimensional framework. Analysis of domain-mean and mass-integrated quantities shows that the variation of the vertical component of the MVV closely follows the variation of the cloud hydrometeors, with a linear correlation coefficient of 0.95, indicating that the vertical component of the MVV is strongly associated with midlatitude convection. Further analysis shows that the vertical component of the MVV reflects the interaction between the horizontal vorticity and the horizontal specific humidity gradient, which can associate dynamic and thermodynamic processes with cloud microphysical processes. Thus, this study can help to understand how the interaction between circulations and clouds aids the development of convection, and the MVV can be used to trace the development and evolution of heavy rainfall.

The optimality of a nonlinear stability criterion of motions of two_layer Phillips model is investigated. The result shows that for a given zonal periodical channel, there exist cases that there is no normal mode which grows exponentially even if the sufficient conditions of the criterion are destroyed. On the other hand, the above criterion is optimal in the following sense: when the sufficient conditions of the criterion are destroyed, except some critical cases, there exists a finite zonal periodical channel, in which there is a zonal normal mode growing exponentially.

The authors evaluate a three-dimensional variational (3.VAR) system for the South china Sea (SCS) in this study. The assimilation method applied in the system takes into consideration error correlation along each ground track and uses recursive lter for optimiza- tion. Data from three R/V cruises during the spring and summer of 1998 and the summer of 2000 are used to evaluate the system. The root-mean-square error and bias are reduced signi cantly and when the altimeter data are assimilated, the distribution of the error is much closer to the Gaussian distribution. Precipitation and river discharge in the southwestern SCS are reproduced, and the variability of sea surface height is e ciently transferred to the subsurface. The 3.VAR system performs well for each of the three cruises, suggesting that it is steady for routine usage.

The influence of moderate ENSO on summer rainfall in eastern china and its comparison with strong ENSO

The 6 major ENSO events since 1979 are classified into the strong and moderate ENSO based on in-tensity. The composite analysis is performed to reveal the influence of ENSO on East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) and summer rainfall in eastern china. It is shown that the influence is changed with the seasonal cycle in summer, with a weaker influence in June and a stronger influence in August, in-dicating a long lagged effect of ENSO on EASM. Besides, the circulation and rainfall anomalies caused by the strong ENSO are also stronger with an earlier starting time, while the influence of the moderate ENSO is evident in August. The composite summer rainfall in eastern china for the moderate ENSO exhibits a northern rainfall pattern, which is totally different from the classical ENSO-type rainfall pat-tern. Based on the composite analysis, two moderate ENSO years with a similar intensity (i.e., 1995 and 2003. are compared. The result shows that, the response of EASM to the moderate ENSO during June and July is, to a certain degree, modulated by the circulation systems in mid-high latitudes of Eurasia and in the Southern Hemisphere, thereby inducing a different rainfall distribution in eastern china. In comparison with the strong ENSO in 1983. it is further revealed that, the strong ENSO plays a dominant role in summer rainfall anomalies in eastern china as well as in controlling the influence of the other factors on EASM. The strong ENSO is therefore different with the moderate ENSO.

A new approach to forecasting the year-to-year increment of rainfall in North china in July-August (JA) is proposed. DY is defined as the difference of a variable between the current year and the preceding year (year-to-year increment). NR denotes the seasonal mean precipitation rate over North china in JA. After analyzing the atmospheric circulation anomalies associated with the DY of NR, five key predictors for the DY of NR have been identified. The prediction model for the DY of NR is established by using multi-linear regression method and the NR is obtained (the current forecasted DY of NR added to the preceding observed NR). The prediction model shows a high correlation coefficient (0.8) between the simulated and the observed DY of NR throughout period 1965-1999, with an average relative root mean square error of 19% for the percentage of precipitation rate anomaly over North china. The prediction model makes a hindcast for 2000-2007, with an average relative root mean square error of 21% for the percentage of precipitation rate anomaly over North china. The model reproduces the downward trend of the percentage of precipitation rate anomaly over North china during 1965-2006. Because the current operational prediction models of the summer precipitation have average forecast scores of 60%-70%, it has been more difficult to forecast the summer rainfall over North china. Thus this new approach for predicting the year-to-year increment of the summer precipitation (and hence the summer precipitation itself) has the potential to significantly improve operational forecasting skill for summer precipitation.
