A comparative study on polypropylene separators coated with different inorganic materials for lithium-ion batteries

Coating commercial porous polyolefin separators with inorganic materials can improve the thermal stability of the polyolefin separators and hence improve the safety of lithium-ion batteries. several different inorganic materials have been studied for the coating. However, there lacks a study on how different the properties of separators, in inorganic materials affect terms of thermal stability and cell performance. Herein, we present such a study on coating a commercial polypropylene separator with four inorganic materials, i.e., Al2O3, siO2, ZrO2 and zeolite. All inorganic coatings have improved thermal stability of the separators although with differences. The coating layers add 28%-45% of electrical resistance compared with the pure polypropylene separator, but all the cells prepared with the coated polypropylene separators have the same electrical chemical performance as the uncoated separator in terms of rate capability and capacities at different temperatures.

Diamond growth on Fe-Cr-Al-si steel and si substrates was comparatively investigated in microwave plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition （MPCVD） reactor with different deposition parameters. Adherent nanocrystalline diamond films were directly deposited on this steel substrate under a typical deposition condition, whereas microcrystalline diamond films were produced on si wafer. With increasing CH4 concentration, reaction pressure, or the total gas flow rate, the quality of nanocrystalline diamond films formed on Fe-Cr-Al-si substrates is gradually deteriorated in terms of density and adhesion. This impaired diamond quality on steels is primarily associated with a combined effect by the substrate composition and the specific process conditions that favor excessive nucleation of diamond.

Macroporous silica materials with ordered three-dimensional pore structure can be easily prepared by the template-directed sol-gel process. However, it is still a challenge to prepare them in membrane form on a porous support, which limits their applications. In this work, we have demonstrated the feasibility of ob- taining a three-dimensional ordered macroporous silica membrane on macroporous alumina support using poly-methyl methacrylate （PMMA） spheres as the template. PMMA spheres were packed on the top of an Anopore-alumina support by filtration of a PMMA aqueous suspension. silica sol obtained by an acid-catalyzed sol-gel process was infiltrated into the voids among the spheres. Drying induced stress caused the membrane to crack or peel off from the top of the support. This can be minimized by annealing the PMMA template layer before the introduction of silica sol which increases the mechanical strength of the template. Calcination or solvent extraction to remove the template produced a highly ordered three-dimensional macroporous silica membrane with spherical pores connected by windows in the mesoporous range. The results show that the PMMA-templated infiltration method is effective in preparing three-dimensional ordered macroporous silica membranes on a porous support.

small amount of antimony addition to the Mg-9Al-0.8Zn-0.2Mn(AZ91) alloy results in the obvious increase of tensile strength at both ambient and elevated temperatures. The creep resistance at the temperatures up to 200°C is also improved significantly by antimony addition. Microstructural observations revealed that the addition of antimony modifies morphology of the β(Mg17Al12) phase and causes the formation of some rod-shaped precipitates Mg3sb2 at grain boundaries. These precipitates have high thermal stability and play an important role for strengthening grain boundaries at elevated temperatures.

Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry （LA-ICP-Ms） has been widely adopted for the direct multi-elemental analysis with high sensitivity. Especially analysis of fine ceramics by LA-ICP-Ms without time-consuming sample decomposition process has been one of the most expecting application field. small additive elements in MgO powders were analyzed by LA-ICP-Ms. For precise and accurate analysis influence of carrier gas （Ar or He） was presented by the signal intensities of ICP-Ms, relative standard deviation of signal intensities and ablated particle size distribution. Ablated particles were collected and analyzed by.s.anning electron microscopy （sEM） to investigate the particle size distribution, and the ablated sample surface was examined by camscope. In He gas atmosphere, the signal was more stable than in Ar gas atmosphere. The signal intensity was higher in Ar than in He. Examination of ablated particles and sample surface reveals that more particles were generated in Ar atmosphere and the distribution of particle size was larger.

The crystal growth of a nickel-based single crystal superalloy DD3 was researched via controlled directional solidification under the action of a DC electric field. The cellular or dendrite spacing of the single crystal superalloy is refined and microsegregation of alloying elements Al, Ti, Mo and W, is reduced by the electric field. The electric field decreases the interface stability and reduces the critical growth rate of the ceUular-dendritic translation because of Thomson effect and Joule heating. The precipitation of the γ＇ phase is more uniform and the size of the γ＇ phase is smaller with the electric field than that without the electric field.

It is known that fiber metal laminates （FML） as one of hybrid materials with thin metal sheets and fiber/epoxy layers have the characteristics of the excellent damage tolerance, fatigue and impact properties with a relatively low density. Therefore, the mechanical components using FML can contribute the enhanced safety level of the sound construction toward the whole body. In this study, the impact performance of carbon reinforced aluminum laminates （CARAL） is investigated by experiments and numerical simulations. Drop weight tests are carried out with the weight of 4.7 kg at the speed of 1 and 2 m/s, respectively. Dynamic non-linear transient analyses are also accomplished using a finite element analysis software, ABAQUs. The experiment results and numerical results are compared with impact load-time histories. Also, energy-time histories are applied to investigate the impact performance of CARAL.

The rheology feature of sb, Bi melt and alloys was studied using coaxial cylinder high-temperature viscometer. The results showed that the curve of torsion-rotational speed for sb melt presents a linear relation in all measured temperature ranges, whereas for the Bi melt, the curve presents obvious non-Newtonian feature within the low temperature range and at relative high shear stress. The rheology feature of sb80Bi20 and sb20Bi80 alloy melts was well correlated with that of sb and Bi, respectively. It is considered that the rheology behavior of sb melt plays a crucial role in sb80Bi20 alloy and that of Bi melt plays a crucial role in sb20Bi80 alloy.
