In this paper,a simulation model for the temperature field in the solidification process and microstructure distribution is presented. Then, the result of simulation for the final microstructure distribution is compared with experiment using 10-Kg ingot of MlNi3.55Al0.3Mn0.4CO0.75 (Ml: Lanthanum-rich Mischmetal) hydrogen stor- age alloy cast in a mould, which agrees with the experiment well. Finally, in order to obtain the expected as-cast microstructure distribution of 15-Kg ingot of MlNi3.55Al0.3Mn0.4Co0.75 alloy, the size of Cu mould is optimized using the model described. The optimized mould is then made and the alloy is cast in it, the expected as-cast microstructure distribution is obtained.

The Micro- and Nano-mechanics Working Group of the Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics organized a forum to discuss the perspectives, trends, and directions in mechanics of heterogeneous materials in January 2010. The international journal, Acta Mechanica Solida Sinica, is de- voted to all fields of solid mechanics and relevant disciplines in science, technology, and engineering, with a balanced coverage on analytical, experimental, numerical and applied investigations. On the occasion of the 30TM anniversary of Acta Mechanica Solida Sinica, its editor-in-chief, Professor Q.S. zheng invited some of the forum participants to review the state-of-the-art of mechanics of heterogeneous solids, with a particular emphasis on the recent research development results of Chinese scientists. Their reviews are organized into five research areas as reported in different sections of this paper. ~I firstly brings in fo- cus on micro- and nano-mechanics, with regards to several selective topics, including multiscale coupled models and computational methods, nanocrystal superlattices, surface effects, micromechanical damage mechanics, and microstructural evolution of metals and shape memory alloys. ~II shows discussions on multifield coupled mechanical phenomena, e.g., multi-fields actuations of liquid crystal polymer networks, mechanical behavior of materials under radiations, and micromechanics of heterogeneous materials. In ~III, we mainly address the multiscale mechanics of biological nanocomposites, biological adhesive surface mechanics, wetting and dewetting phenomena on microstructured solid surfaces. The phononic crystals and manipulation of elastic waves were elaborated in ~IV. Finally, we conclude with a series of perspectives on solid mechanics. This review will set a primary goal of future science research and engineering application on solid mechanics with the effort of social and economic development.

The recent transport measurements of La3Ni2O7uncovered a “right-triangle” shape of the superconducting dome in the pressure-temperature（P-T） phase diagram. Motivated by this, we perform theoretical first-principles studies of La3Ni2O7with the pressure ranging from 0 to 100 GPa. Notably, we reveal a pressure dependence of the Ni-dz2electron density at the Fermi energy(nzEF) that highly coincides with such shape. On this basis, we further explore the electronic structure under uniaxial stress. By tracking the stress response of nzEF, we propose that superconductivity can be achieved by applying only ～2 GPa of compression along the c axis. The idea is further exemplified from the perspectives of lattice distortion, band structure, Fermi surface and superconducting phase coherence. We also discuss the possible charge modulation under the stress and provide an insight into the relation between nz E Fand the superconducting Tcin La3Ni2O7system. Our study provides new routes to the search of high-Tcsuperconductors in future experiments.

Enhanced interfacial polarization of SiC/C nanofibers loaded with cobalt ferrite nanoparticles for improved electromagnetic wave absorption

The unique advantages of heterogeneous interface engineering and its superior electromagnetic properties provide new momentum for designing advanced wave-absorbing materials. Most researchers focus on enhancing wave-absorbing capabilities by increasing interfacial polarization, often overlooking material cost and engineering feasibility. To address this,we enhance the heterogeneous interfaces of SiC/C nanofibers(NFs) by loading cobalt ferrite nanoparticles(CFO NPs),exploring a simple, cost-effective strategy to develop high-performance wave-absorbing composites. By adjusting the CFO concentration, we optimize the dielectric and magnetic losses of the composite to achieve impedance matching and improve absorption performance. The results show that the SiC/C/CFO20 composite exhibits excellent microwave absorption(MA),achieving a reflection loss(RL) value of-56.52 dB at 11.60 GHz with a matching thickness of 2 mm and an effective absorption bandwidth(EAB) of 5.05 GHz. Furthermore, the composite shows outstanding performance in both monostatic and bistatic radar cross section(RCS) simulations, with optimal values reaching-49.04 and-51.16 d B, respectively. This performance demonstrates a wide detection angle, supporting its potential for practical engineering applications. Overall, this approach provides a new perspective for designing high-efficiency, low-cost, and scalable wave-absorbing materials for engineering applications.

The fracture behavior for welded joint of new generation fine grained steel SS400 was investigated and assessed on the basis of fitness for purpose philosophy. The actual critical defect sizes for the SS400 base metal and its weld HAz (heat affected zone) defined by the gross yielding criterium have been determined directly by means of wide plate tests. It has been shown that although the HAz grain growth occurs due to the welding heat, the resistance to fracture is not deteriorated. The deformation behavior of wide plate specimen was also studied by finite, element (FE) analysis. The deformation of weld HAz is protected by the high strength weld metal, so it is easier to get the general yielding for the welded joint specimen.
