Down-scaled regional ocean modeling system (ROMs) for high-resolution coastal hydrodynamics in Korea

A down-scaled operational oceanographic system is developed for the coastal waters of Korea using a re- gional ocean modeling system （ROMs）. The operational oceanographic modeling system consists of at- mospheric and hydrodynamic models. The hydrodynamic model, ROMs, is coupled with wave, sediment transport, and water quality modules. The system forecasts the predicted results twice a day on a 72 h basis, including sea surface elevation, currents, temperature, salinity, storm surge height, and wave information for the coastal waters of Korea. The predicted results are exported to the web-GIs-based coastal informa- tion system for real-time dissemination to the public and validation with real-time monitoring data using visualization technologies. The ROMs is two-way coupled with a simulating waves nearshore model, sWAN, for the hydrodynamics and waves, nested with the meteorological model, WRE for the atmospheric surface forcing, and externally nested with the eutrophication model, CE-QUAL-ICM, for the water quality. The op- erational model, ROMs, was calibrated with the tidal surface observed with a tide-gage and verified with current data observed by bottom-mounted ADCP or AWAC near the coastal waters of Korea. To validate the predicted results, we used real-time monitoring data derived from remote buoy system, HF-radar, and geostationary ocean color imager （GOCI）. This down-scaled operational coastal forecasting system will be used as a part of the Korea operational oceanographic system （KOOs） with other operational oceanographic systems.

Brazilin and Caesalpinia sappan L. extract protect epidermal keratinocytes from oxidative stress by inducing the expression of GPX7

Caesalpinia sappan L., belonging to the family Leguminosae, is a medicinal plant that is distributed in southeast Asia. The dried heartwood of this plant is used as a traditional ingredient of food, red dyes, and folk medicines in the treatment of diarrhea, dysentery, tuberculosis, skin infections, and inflammation. Brazilin is the major active compound, which has exhibited various phar- macological effects, including anti-platelet activity, anti-hepatotoxicity, induction of immunological tolerance, and anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities. The present study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant activity and expression of antioxidant enzymes of C. sappan L. extract and its major compound, brazilin, in human epidermal keratinocytes exposed to UVA irradiation. Our results indi- cated that C. sappan L. extract reduced UVA-induced H202 production via GPX7 activation. Moreover, brazilin exhibited anfioxidant effects that were similar to those of C. sappan L. via glutathione peroxidase 7 （GPX7）, suggesting that C. sappan L. extract and its natural compound represent potential treatments for oxidative stress-induced photoaging of skin.

The quantitative resistance gene pi21 from sensho was introgressed to an indica breeding line IR63307-4B-13-2,a pyramiding line IRBB4/5/13/21,and a tropical japonica line Kinandang Patong by marker-assisted backcrossing.A total of 192 improved lines at the BC4F3 and BC4F4 generations were developed and confirmed to have the gene introgression via genotyping using a pi21-specific InDel *** randomly selected improved lines,representing all the three genetic backgrounds,demonstrated resistance against leaf blast composites in the field and a broader spectrum resistance against individual isolates compared to the recurrent parents in the ***,the tested lines exhibited pi21-acquired resistance against 11 leaf blast isolates that elicited susceptible reactions from the recurrent *** the tested lines maintained a comparative heading date,and similar or improved panicle length,number of primary branches per panicle and number of total grains per panicle relative to the recurrent *** physical grain characteristics of the recurrent parents were also maintained in the 13 lines tested,although variability in the amylose content and chalkiness degree was *** successful marker-assisted introgression of pi21 in diverse genetic backgrounds and the resulting broader spectrum resistance of improved lines against leaf blast indicate the potential of pi21 for deployment in cultivars grown across other rice growing regions in Asia.

Acheivement of Nano-scale siGe Layer with Discrete Ge Mole Fraction Profile Using Batch-Type HVCVD

The strained si grown on the relaxed siGe-on-insulator C-MOsFET's is a promising device for the future system LsI devices with the design rule of sub-micron. The achievement of the discrete Ge mole fraction in the siGe layer is a key engineering in low-temperature siGe epitaxial growth using HVCVD. The pre-flow of GeH4 gas enhanced the Ge mole fraction and siGe layer thickness. In addition, the Ge mole fraction and siGe layer thickness increases with the gas ratio of GeH4/siH4 + GeH4, process temperature, and gas flow time. However, the haze was produced if the Ge mole fraction is above 22wt%. The discrete-like Ge mole fraction with 22 wt% in 10 nm siGe layer was obtained by the pre-flow of GeH4 for 10 s, the mixture gas ratio of GeH4/siH4 + GeH4 of 67%, and the gas flow time for 150 s at the process temperature of 550 C.

Effective shape-controlled growth of monolayer Mos2 flakes by powder-based chemical vapor deposition

In the recent years, transition-metal dichalcogenides such as Mos2 have attracted considerable attention owing to their unique structure and electronic properties. Chemical vapor deposition （CVD） is a popular method for producing Mos2 flakes with different shapes. Here, we report an effective method for achieving a broad range of shape evolution in CVD-grown monolayer Mos2 flakes. By controlling the s and MoO3 temperatures, the shape of the monolayer Mos2 flakes was varied from hexagonal to triangular via intermediate shapes such as truncated and multi-apex triangles. The shape evolution of the Mos2 flakes can be explained by introducing the term “nominal Mo：s ratio”, which refers to the amount of loaded MoO3 and evaporated s powders. By using the nominal Mo：s ratio, we predicted the potential reaction atmosphere and effectively controlled the actual proportion of MoO3-x with respect to s in the growth region, along with the growth temperature. From the systematic investigation of the behavior of the shape evolution, we developed a shape-evolution diagram, which can be used as a practical guide for producing CVD-grown Mos2 flakes with desired shapes

Bimetallic Ni-Co MOF@PAN modified electrospun separator enhances high-performance lithium-sulfur batteries

Lithium-sulfur(Li-s)batteries with high energy density are considered promising energy storage devices for the next ***,the shuttle effect and the passive layer between the separator and the electrodes still seriously affect the cycle stability and ***,a bimetallic Ni-Co metal-organic framework(MOF)with adsorption and catalytic synergism for polysulfides was successfully synthesized as an electrospinning separator sandwich for Li-s *** porous Ni-Co MOF coatings into the separator provides more adsorption catalytic sites for polysulfides,prevents their diffusion to the anode,and enhances sulfur ***,the improved Li-s batteries with a Ni-Co MOF@PAN(NCMP)electrospun separator delivered excellent rate performance and outstanding cycle stability,yielding an ultra-high initial capacity of 1560 mA h g^(-1)at 0.1 ***,remarkable Li-s battery performance with a discharge capacity of 794 mA h g^(-1)(84.1%capacity retention)was obtained after500 cycles,while delivering a low capacity decay rate of 0.032%during long-term cycling(up to 500cycles)at 1 ***,even at the current density of 2 C,the capacity attenuation rate of 2000 cycles is only 0.034%per *** addition,compared with the Celgard separator,the NCMP separator also had high thermal stability(keeping the separator outline at 200℃)that ensured battery safety and excellent electrolyte wettability(73%porosity and 535%electrolyte absorption)and significantly enhanced the ionic conductivity and Li^(+) transfer number,and protected the surface integrity of the anode.

Boosting electrocatalytic activity with the formation of abundant heterointerfaces and N, s dual-doped carbon nanotube for rechargeable Zn-air battery

Herein,a facile synthetic strategy is proposed to fabricate high-performance electrocatalysts for rechargeable Zn-air batteries(ZABs).Heterostructured NiCo/NiCo_(2)s_(4) nanoparticles encapsulated in N-,s-co-doped CNT(NiCo/NiCo_(2)s_(4)@NsCNT) are synthesized via co-precipitation,thermal carbonization,and partial sulfidation *** strongly coupled NiCo/NiCo_(2)s_(4) heterostructure can improve the redox property and charge transfer ***,the CNTs with abundant foreign dopants provide high electrical conductivity and abundant defect sites for both the oxygen evolution reaction(OER) and oxygen reduction reaction(ORR).The prepared NiCo/NiCo_(2)s_(4)@NsCNT electrocatalyst exhibits a low overpotential of 349 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 and a half-wave potential of 0.865 V for the OER and ORR,***,the ZAB assembled using as-prepared NiCo/NiCo_(2)s_(4)@NsCNT can provide superior specific capacity(756.16 mA h g_(Zn)^(-1)],peak power density(155.82 mW cm^(-2)),and long-term cyclability compared to those of the precious metal-based electrocatalyst(Pt/C+RuO_(2)).

This paper presents a tutorial-style review on the recent results about the disturbance observer （DOB） in view of robust stabilization and recovery of the nominal performance. The analysis is based on the case when the bandwidth of Q-filter is large, and it is explained in a pedagogical manner that, even in the presence of plant uncertainties and disturbances, the behavior of real uncertain plant can be made almost similar to that of disturbance-free nominal system both in the transient and in the steady-state. The conventional DOB is interpreted in a new perspective, and its restrictions and extensions are discussed.

Dynamic changes of protein corona compositions on the surface of zinc oxide nanoparticle in cell culture media

The potential applications of nanomaterials used in nanomedicine as ingredients in drug delivery systems and in other products continue to expand. When nanomaterials are introduced into physiological environments and driven by energetics, they readily associate proteins forming a protein corona (PC) on their surface. This PC could result in an alteration of the nanomatcrial's surface characteristics, affecting their interaction with cells due to conformational changes in adsorbed protein molecules. However, our current understanding of nanobiological interactions is still very limited. Utilizing a liquid chromatography-mass spectroscopy/mass spectroscopy technology and a Cytoscape plugin (ClueGO) approach, we examined the composition of the PC for a set of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONP) from cell culture media typically and further analyzed the biological interaction of identified proteins, respectively. In total, 36 and 33 common proteins were investigated as being bound to ZnONP at 5 min and 60 min, respectively. These proteins were further analyzed with ClueGO, a Cytoscape plugin, which provided gene ontology and the biological interaction processes of identified proteins. Proteins bound to the surface of nanoparticles that may modify the structure, therefore the function of the adsorbed protein could be consequently affect the complicated biological processes.
