Monte Carlo neutrino generators are programs or libraries which simulate neutrino interactions with electrons, nucleons and nuclei. In this capacity their usual task is to take an input neutrino and nucleus and produce a set of 4-vectors for particles emerging from the interaction, which are then input to full detector simulations. Since these generators have to simulate not only the initial interaction of neutrinos with target particles, but re-interactions of the generated particles in the nucleus, they contain a wide range of elementary particle and nuclear physics. Viewed more broadly, they are the access point for neutrino experimentalists to the theory inputs needed for analysis. Examples include cross section libraries for event rate calculations and parameter uncertainties and reweighting tools for systematic error evaluation.

OBJECTIVE:To examine whether specific stimulation of Shenshu(BL23)affects sympathetic nervous activity(SNA)-associated plasma renin concentration(PRC).METHODS:Eight healthy volunteers participated in three pattern conditions in random order:control(Cont),stimulation of Shenshu(BL23),and stimulation of sham point(Sham).All participants were initially in the supine position for>60 min,and then remained in the standing position during the experimental procedure to increase SNA.An electrocardiogram was used to calculate low frequency/high frequency(LF/HF)ratio;blood was collected to analyze PRC.RESULTS:The LF/HF ratio was significantly increased in the standing position when compared with the supine position(Py increased in Cont and Sham conditions(P<0.01).There was no difference in PRC after stimulation of Shenshu(BL23)in the standing position when compared with before the stimulation in the supine position;however,there was a significant increase in PRC in the Cont and Sham conditions(Cont P<0.05,Sham P<0.01).CONCLUSION:Our results demonstrated that specific acupuncture stimulation of Shenshu(BL23)in the standing position decreased SNA-associated PRC,which was not observed during acupuncture stimulation of the sham point.

Estimation of HⅡBubble Size Distribution from 21 cm Power Spectrum with Artificial Neural Networks

The bubble size distribution of ionized hydrogen regions probes information about the morphology of HⅡbubbles during reionization.Conventionally,the HⅡbubble size distribution can be derived from the tomographic imaging data of the redshifted 21 cm signal from the epoch of reionization,which,however,is observationally challenging even for upcoming large radio interferometer arrays.Given that these interferometers promise to measure the 21 cm power spectrum accurately,we propose a new method,which is based on artificial neural networks,to reconstruct the HⅡbubble size distribution from the 21 cm power spectrum.We demonstrate that reconstruction from the 21 cm power spectrum can be almost as accurate as being directly measured from the imaging data with fractional error■10%,even with thermal noise at the sensitivity level of the Square Kilometre Array.Nevertheless,the reconstruction implicitly exploits the modeling in reionization simulations,and hence the recovered HⅡbubble size distribution is not an independent summary statistic from the power spectrum,and should be used only as an indicator for understanding HⅡbubble morphology and its evolution.

BACKGROUND Phosphoglyceride crystal deposition disease(PCDD)is a rare acquired disease in which phospholipid crystals deposit in bone and soft tissue long after surgery,trauma,or repeated injections.CASE SUMMARy A 60-year-old-woman was referred to our department because of multiple abdominal masses after open splenectomy for idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura 29 years earlier.All the masses showed marked fluorodeoxyglucose(FDG)uptake on ^(18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography(^(18)F-FDGPET)and were strongly suspected to be malignant tumors.Surgical biopsies were performed,and the abdominal masses were found to be aligned vertically,three in a row,along the tissue layers cut in the patient’s previous surgery.Pathological finding of the specimens showed foreign body granuloma consisting of histiocytes and multinucleated giant cells accumulating around needle-like crystals.The crystals were confirmed as phosphoglyceride by Raman spectroscopy,and PCDD was diagnosed.To our knowledge,this is the first report of PCDD diagnosed by Raman spectroscopy.CONCLUSION We made a definitive diagnosis of PCDD in a patient with multiple tumors showing marked FDG uptake on ^(18)F-FDG-PET by incisional biopsy and composition analysis using Raman spectroscopy,a method that has not previously been reported for the diagnosis of PCDD.

It has been established that cancer can be promoted and exacerbated by inflammation.Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) is the fifth most common cancer worldwide,and its long-term prognosis remains poor.Although HCC is a complex and heterogeneous tumor with several genomic mutations,it usually develops in the context of chronic liver damage and inflammation,suggesting that understanding the mechanism(s) of inflammation-mediated hepatocarcinogenesis is essential for the treatment and prevention of HCC.Chronic liver damage induces a persistent cycle of necroinflammation and hepatocyte regeneration,resulting in genetic mutations in hepatocytes and expansion of initiated cells,eventually leading to HCC development.Recently,several inflammation-and stress-related signaling pathways have been identified as key players in these processes,which include the nuclear factor B,signal transducer and activator of transcription,and stress-activated mitogen-activated protein kinase pathways.Although these pathways may suggest potential therapeutic targets,they have a wide range of functions and complex crosstalk occurs among them.This review focuses on recent advances in our understanding of the roles of these signaling pathways in hepatocarcinogenesis.

Body composition changes following chemotherapy for testicular germ cell tumor:obesity is the long-term problem

Metabolic syndrome is a long-term complication of systemic chemotherapy for testicular germ cell tumor(TGCT).It is believed to be caused by secondary hypogonadism or toxic medicines because of orchidectomy followed by systemic chemotherapy.In this study,changes in the body composition of patients over time were quantitatively analyzed up to 24 months after chemotherapy.This study retrospectively analyzed 44 patients with TGCT who underwent chemotherapy at our institution from January 2008 to December 2016.Subcutaneous and visceral fat areas and psoas and skeletal muscle areas were measured by computed tomography before and immediately after chemotherapy as well as 3 months,6 months,12 months,and 24 months after chemotherapy.The subcutaneous and visceral fat indices and psoas and skeletal muscle indices were calculated as each area divided by body height squared.The total fat area had already significantly increased 3 months after the initiation of chemotherapy(P=0.004).However,it did not return to prechemotherapeutic levels even at 24 months after chemotherapy.The skeletal muscle area was significantly decreased at the end of chemotherapy(Pysis,the prechemotherapeutic skeletal muscle index and number of chemotherapy cycles were independently associated with the reduction of skeletal muscle at the end of chemotherapy(P=0.001 and P=0.027,respectively).In patients with TGCT,skeletal muscle mass decreased during chemotherapy and recovered within 12 months,whereas fat mass progressively increased from the initiation of chemotherapy until 24 months after chemotherapy.

Dear Editor,Collecting duct carcinoma(CDC)or Bellini carcinoma originates in the distal collecting ducts.CDC is a markedly aggressive subtype of renal cell carcinoma and accounts for less than 1%of all renal cell carcinomas[1].We described a patient with CDC and psoriasis,who showed complete response(CR)after being treated with combination therapy of nivolumab and ipilimumab(NI).The study was conducted in accordance with and approved by the Ethics Committee of yamagata University Faculty of Medicine(approval no.2019-35).The need for patient consent was waived by the same institutional review board;all the patients provided written informed consents.

An array of three GdBa_(2)Cu_(3)O_(7‐δ)bulk high‐temperature superconductors(HTS)that mimic the field pole of a high‐power superconducting motor had been magnetized by pulsed field magnetization(PFM)while cooled by liquid nitrogen.The bulk array was magnetized by a passive PFM technique using three vortex‐type coils placed over each individual bulk and connected in series.The trapped magnetic flux density distribution was comparable to the distribution obtained with more traditional quasi‐static magnetization such as field‐cooling.This suggests that the use of PFM technique on arrays of HTS bulks is possible.PFM has also been performed using each coil individually,to magnetize each bulk sequentially.The magnetization sequences showed a maximum reduction of the peak trapped magnetic flux density of 12%due to the demagnetization effect of the magnetization sequence,while the trapped magnetization distribution was improved.

Ionomic Profiling of Rice Genotypes and Identification of Varieties with Elemental Covariation Effects

Ionomic profiles are primarily influenced by genetic and environmental factors.Identifying ionomic responses to varietal effects is necessary to understand the ionomic variations among species or subspecies and to potentially understand genetic effects on ionomic profiles.We cultivated 120 rice(Oryza sativa)varieties to seedling stage in identical hydroponic conditions and determined the concentrations of 26 elements(including 3 anions)in the shoots and roots of rice.Although the subspecies effects were limited by the genus Oryza pre-framework and its elemental chemical properties,we found significant differences in ionomic variations in most elements among the aus,indica and japonica subspecies.Principal component analysis of the correlations indicated that variations in the root-to-shoot ionomic transport mechanisms were the main causes of ionomic differences among the subspecies.Furthermore,the correlations were primarily associated with the screening of varieties for elemental covariation effects that can facilitate breeding biofortified rice varieties with safe concentrations of otherwise toxic elements.The japonica subspecies exhibited the strongest elemental correlations and elemental covariation effects,therefore,they showed greater advantages for biofortification than the indica and aus subspecies,whereas indica and aus subspecies were likely safer in metal(loid)polluted soils.We also found that geographical and historical distribution significantly defined the ionomic profiles.Overall,the results of this study provided a reference for further association studies to improve the nutritional status and minimize toxicity risks in rice production.
