In this article, we will present a particularly remarkable partitioning method of any infinite set with the aid of non-surjective injective maps. The non-surjective injective maps from an infinite set to itself constitute a semigroup for the law of composition bundled with certain properties allowing us to prove the existence of remarkable elements. Not to mention a compatible equivalence relation that allows transferring the said law to the quotient set, which can be provided with a lattice structure. Finally, we will present the concept of Co-injectivity and some of its properties.

Prognostic factors in patients with advanced cholangiocarcinoma: Role of surgery, chemotherapy and body mass index

AIM： To study the factors that may affect survival of cholangiocarcinoma in Lebanon. METHODS： A retrospective review of the medical records of 55 patients diagnosed with cholangio- carcinoma at the American University of Beirut between 1990 and 2005 was conducted. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to determine the impact of surgery, chemotherapy, body mass index, bilirubin level and other factors on survival. RJ^SULTS： The median survival of all patients was 8.57 mo （0.03-105.2）. Univariate analysis showed that low bilirubin level （〈 10 mg/dL）, radical surgery and chemotherapy administration were significantly associated with better survival （P = 0.012, 0.038 and 0.038, respectively）, in subgroup analysis on patients who had no surgery, chemotherapy administration prolonged median survival significantly （17.0 mo vs 3.5 mo, P = 0.001）. Multivariate analysis identified only low bilirubin level 〈 10 mg/dL and chemotherapy administration as independent predictors associated with better survival （P 〈 0.05）. CONCLUSION： Our data show that palliative and postoperative chemotherapy as well as a bilirubin level 〈 10 mg/dL are independent predictors of a significant increase in survival in patients with cholangiocarcinoma.

Euler-Lagrange Modeling and Passivity Based Control of Buck Converters with Input Filter

In this paper, we propose an algorithm for a fast training and accurate prediction for Feedforward Neural Network （FNN）. In this algorithm OMBP, we combine Optic Backpropagation （OBP） with the Modified Backpropagation algorithm （MBP）. The weights are initialized using yam and Chow algorithm to insure the stability of OMBP and to reduce its sensitivity against initial settings. The proposed algorithm had shown an upper hand over three different algorithms in terms of number of iterations, time needed to reach the convergence and the accuracy of the prediction. We have tested the proposed algorithm on several benchmark data and compared its results with those obtained by applying the standard BackPropagation algorithm （SBP）, Least Mean Fourth algorithm （LMF）, and the Optic Backpropagation （OBP）. The criterions used in the comparisons are: number of iterations, and time needed for convergence, the error of prediction, and percentage of trials failed to converge.

In this paper, buck converters with input filter are modeled using the Euler Lagrange formalism and then build a PBC （passivity based controller）. The model is validated, by comparing its response with those of two switched circuits： sylnmetric and asymmetric. In the former, both switches are realized by MOSFETS while in the second one of them is realized by a diode. It is then showed by simulation and, explained with energy-based arguments why the obtained model thoroughly represents only the symmetric circuit. The model is then used to build a passivity-based control law. As this control law assumes the stability of the zero dynamic, conditions under which this hypothesis is satisfied, are first given. It is shown by simulation with switched circuits the robustness of the proposed controller against load variations. Then, a prediction of the source variations is included in the controller in order to render it robust against source variations.

The association of acute pancreatitis with ulcerative colitis [UC] has been described in the literature. It is usually induced by drugs, but sometimes it may be idiopathic. This association remains rare. We report the case of a patient who was treated in our department. Medical observation: Mr. KA, a 60-year-old man, was admitted in our unit for management of acute epigastric. The clinical examination at the admission was normal. After eliminating a cardiac or surgical cause, the diagnosis of acute pancreatitis was made on the basis of the presence of a serum lipase up to 5 times the normal level and pain intensity. An abdominal scanner tomography was performed for the assessment of the pancreatitis. It has shown a pancreatitis stage C associated with a thick rectosigmoidien that was discovered incidentally. Symptomatology was enriched 10 days after by the occurrence of rectal bleeding. A lower endoscopy was performed after the improvement of the pancreatitis and had shown an ulcerative colitis on pancolitis which was confirmed by biopsy. In order to search other causes of this pancreatitis, other tests were made [a biliary IRM, endoscopic ultrasonography, autoimmune tests] and the results were negative. We concluded an idiopathic pancreatitis. The ulcerative colitis was classified as moderate and the patient was put on oral corticosteroids with degression. The evolution was marked by a clinical and biological improvement of pancreatitis and colitis. Conclusion: The association of idiopathic pancreatitis with ulcerative colitis is rare. The case of our patient is the first case reported in our series with 400 cases of ulcerative colitis diagnosed in our service.

We report two cases of a man and a woman whose association of Crohn’s disease (CRD) and celiac disease (CD) was evident and significant. The characteristic of our patients was the young age of discovery, and the localization of the CRD which was different in the two cases: colic localization in the woman and ileal stenosing in the man. The diagnosis of MCO was confirmed by the histological study of the jejunal biopsies in both cases and by serologies (anti-gliadines Antibody) in one case. Through these two observations, we insist on the singularity of the association of the celiac disease to the Crohn’s disease and on the complex etiopathogenesis of CRD which could have common points with that of CD. This fact can help us to understand more the two diseases and thereafter master their management.

A 60-year-old woman presented to the emergency department of our university hospital for several episodes of upper gastro-intestinal bleeding (hematemesis and melena). The endoscopic examination (Figure 1) showed a large ulcer at the front of the bulb, with a calculation within it and a visible vessel on the banks of the ulcer treated by putting two clips. Computer tomography (CT), demonstrated a sclerotic, atrophic and multi gallstone gallbladder, with a calculation protruding in the duodenum. The patient underwent surgery which consisted on partial cholecystectomy with duodenal suture and closing of cystic duct.

To overcome cartilage injury, strategies have been developed in the last few years based on tissue engineering to rebuild the defects. Cartilage engineering is principally based on three main biological factors: cells (native cells (chondrocytes) or a more primitive ones as mesenchymal stem cells), scaffolds and functionalization factors (growth factors, mechanical stimulation and/or hypoxia). Cartilage tissue engineering strategies generally result in homogeneous tissue structures with little resemblance to native zonal organization of articular cartilage. The main objective of our work concerns the buildup of complex biomaterials aimed at reconstructing biological tissue with three dimensional cells construction for mimicking cartilage architecture. Our strategy is based on structures formation by simple and progressive spraying of mixed alginate hydrogel and human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSC). In this work, the comportment of cells and more precisely their chondrogenic differentiation potential is compared to a traditional making process: the mold. We report here that spraying method allowed to product a scaffold with hMSC that confer a favorable environment for neocartilage construction.
