Forecasting of Asian dust storm that occurred on May.10-13, 2011, using an ensemble-based data assimilation sy.tem

An ensemble-based assimilation sy.tem that used the MASINGAR ink-2 （Model of Aerosol Species IN the Global AtmospheRe Mark 2） dust forecasting model and satellite-derived aerosol optical thickness （AOT） data. processed in the JAXA （Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency. Satellite Monitoring for Environmental Studies （JASMES） sy.tem with MODIS （Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer） observations. was used to quantify.the impact of assimilation on forecasts of a severe Asian dust storm during May.10-13. 2011. The modeled bidirectional reflectance function and observed vegetation index employ.d in JASMES enable AOT retrievals in areas of high surface reflectance, making JASMES effective for dust forecasting and early.warning by.enabling assimilations in dust storm source regions. Forecasts both with and without assimilation were validated using PM^0 observations from China, Korea, and Japan in the TEMM WG1 dataset. Only.the forecast with assimilation successfully.captured the contrast between the core and tail of the dust storm by.increasing the AOT around the core by.70-150% and decreasing it around the tail by.20-30% in the 18-h forecast. The forecast with assimilation improved the agreement with observed PMlo concentrations, but the effect was limited at downwind sites in Korea and Japan because of the lack of observational constraints for a mis-forecasted dust storm due to cloud.

Estimation of water requirement per unit carbon fixed by.Eucaly.tus camaldulensis in semi-arid land of Western Australia

Afforestation in arid land is a promising method for carbon fixation, but the effective utili- zation of water is highly.important and required. Thus, the evaluation of the amount of water per unit carbon fixed with the tree growth is required to minimize the amount of water supplied to the plants. In this research, a tree is regarded as a carbon fixation reactor with inflows of water and nutrients from roots, and CO_2 as the carbon source from leaves with outflow of water vapor from leaves and accumulation in the tree itself. In the process of photosy.thesis and respiration nutri- tional elements are dissolved in water flow in trees. They.do not flow out by.these reactions, but are accumulated in trees. Thus, we have treated the behaviour of nutrients as a marker to evaluate the water/carbon ratio. Assuming that nutrient concentration is constant in sap, and the differences in the ratios of nutrient to carbon in living trees and dead (i.e. litter fall, etc.) are neglected, the ratio of the used water to fixed carbon is given as the ratio of nutrient to carbon in the tree body.divided by.the ratio of nutrient to water in sap. However, some nutrients are translocated and concentrated within the tree and some may.be discarded through litter fall. Thus it is important to examine which nutrient element is the most suitable as the tracer. In this paper, the results of the above method applied to Eucaly.tus camaldulensis in semi- arid land of Western Australia are shown. The value of water requirement per unit carbon fixation determined from potassium balance is between 421 kg-H_2O/kg-C for mature trees and 285 kg-H_2O/kg-C for y.ung trees, while the values from calcium balance are much larger than these. The cause of the discrepancy.between these values is discussed based on the measured element concentrations in sap and trees and the plant phy.iology. Finally. the actual average value through the life of a tree is suggested to fall between the two values.

J-integral arid crack opening displacement 8 （COD） were important parameters for characterization of fractures in engineering materials. The relationship between J-integral arid COD has been investigated for a long time and was generally.represented as J = m σy. δ, where σy.is the y.eld strength arid m is a function of specimen geometry.arid material properties. To determine the value of m, extensive studies and experiments have been performed. The method that used the fracture-surface topography.analy.is （ FRASTA ） for determining J-integral from fracture surfaces of materials was introduced. On the basis of the relationship between COD arid fracture surface average profile, the relationship between J-integral arid COD was deduced arid compared with the generally.used equation. The method was experimentally.confirmed to be able to provide a new way.to determine the relationship between J-integral and COD.

The β^+ decay.of ^(31)Ar was investigated in an experiment at the GSI-FRS *** ions of interest have been produced in the fragmentation of a ^(36)Ar beam at 880 Me V/nucleon and implanted in a time projection chamber with optical readout. In addition to β-delay.d one and two proton emission, for the first time the emission of β-delay.d 3 protons has been observed. The branching ratio for this decay.mode is found to be(0.07 ± 0.02)%.

The acicular ferrite in austempered ductile iron (ADI) matrix around graphite wascorroded preferentially.in wet condition, promoting crack origination and propagationand resulting in the disappearance of ADI fatigue limit. ADI fatigue strength wasgradually.reduced with increasing the time of test and was reduced by.50% in wetcondition at 10~7 cy.les compared with the fatigue limit in dry.condition. The fatiguestrength variation of ferritic ductile iron in wet condition was similar to that of ADI.The ferritic ductile iron, however, has better corrosion resistance so that the fatiguestrength was lowered only.by.10% in wet condition at 10~7 cy.les compared with thefatigue limit in dry.condition. On the other hand, the fatigue limits of ADI and ferriticductile iron were dropped by.32% and 25% in tap water dipping 480h/dry.conditionrespectively.compared with those in dry.condition. The reduction of fatigue limit wasattributed to corrosion pits formation correlated with stress concentration, resultingin origination and propagation of fatigue crack.

To investigate the causes that led to the formation of cracks in materials, a novel method that only.considered the fracture surfaces for determining the fracture toughness parameters of J-integral for plain strain was proposed The principle of the fracture-surface topography.analy.is （FRASTA） was used. In FRASTA, the fracture surfaces were scanned by.laser microscope and the elevation data was recorded for analy.is. The relationship between J-integral and fracture surface average profile for plain strain was deduced. It was also verified that the J-integral determined by.the novel method and by.the compliance method matches each other well.

A broadband frequency.tunable microwave reflectometer sy.tem, which has the abil- ity.of fast and stable frequency.sweeping operation, is applied in the large helical device （LHD） to measure the boundary.of the high-temperature plasma. When the microwave is launched, with extraordinary.polarization, from the low field side of the magnetic field with its frequency.swept from low to high, the microwave of minimum right-hand cut-off frequency.is reflected most out- side.
