This article presents an in-depth exploration of the acoustofluidic capabilities of guided flexural waves(GFWs)generated by.a membrane acoustic waveguide actuator(MAWA).By.harnessing the potential of GFWs,cavity.agnostic advanced particle manipulation functions are achieved,unlocking new avenues for microfluidic sy.tems and lab-on-a-chip *** localized acoustofluidic effects of GFWs arising from the evanescent nature of the acoustic fields they.induce inside a liquid medium are numerically.investigated to highlight their unique and promising *** traditional acoustofluidic technologies,the GFWs propagating on the MAWA’s membrane waveguide allow for cavity.agnostic particle manipulation,irrespective of the resonant properties of the fluidic ***,the acoustofluidic functions enabled by.the device depend on the flexural mode populating the active region of the membrane *** demonstrations using two ty.es of particles include in-sessile-droplet particle transport,mixing,and spatial separation based on particle diameter,along with streaming-induced counter-flow virtual channel generation in microfluidic PDMS *** experiments emphasize the versatility.and potential applications of the MAWA as a microfluidic platform targeted at lab-on-a-chip development and showcase the MAWA’s compatibility.with existing microfluidic sy.tems.

Objective The placebo response in depression studies is the change in sy.ptoms amongst those who receive an inactive *** well-designed randomized controlled trials(RCTs)of depression have a high proportion of placebo responders,with little understanding as to *** present study.assesses characteristics associated with the placebo response in a nutraceutical trial with a large proportion of placebo *** This is a secondary.analy.is of a nutraceutical depression RCT which identified no overall treatment benefit relative to placebo(n=69 in placebo group).We investigated participant characteristics such as socio-demographics,clinical features,and recruitment methods,and their association with the placebo *** genetic poly.orphisms were also *** response was measured based on change in Montgomery.Asberg Depression Rating Scale *** association of these hy.othesis-driven variables of interest and the placebo response was examined using linear mixed effects *** Greater levels of education,particularly.pursuing post-high school education,better self-reported general health,marriage/de facto,greater improvement in the first trial week,and more failed antidepressant therapies in the current depressive episode were associated with greater placebo *** increased placebo response was not found in those recruited via social media nor in those with concomitant antidepressant *** nucleotide poly.orphisms from the try.tophan hy.roxy.ase 1(TPH1)gene(A779C and A218C)were weakly.associated with greater placebo response,although the evidence was attenuated after accounting for multiple *** This is,to our knowledge,the first study.within nutraceutical research for depression to assess the association between participant characteristics and variation in the placebo *** variables appeared to predict the placebo *** findings may.encourage future trial design

Laser plasma accelerators(LPAs)enable the generation of intense and short proton bunches on a micrometre scale,thus offering new experimental capabilities to research fields such as ultra-high dose rate radiobiology.or material *** spectrally.broadband,laser-accelerated proton bunches allow for tailored volumetric dose deposition in a sample via single bunches to excite or probe specific sample *** rising number of such experiments indicates a need for diagnostics providing spatially.resolved characterization of dose distributions with volumes of approximately.1 cm^(3) for single proton bunches to allow for fast online *** we present the scintillator-based miniSCIDOM detector for online single-bunch tomographic reconstruction of dose distributions in volumes of up to approximately.1 cm^(3).The detector achieves a spatial resolution below 500μm and a sensitivity.of 100 *** detector performance is tested at a proton therapy.cy.lotron and an LPA proton *** experiments’primary.focus is the characterization of the scintillator’s ionization quenching behaviour.

Phy.ical scientists research biomedicine: a call for caution

It is noticeable that nowaday. there are more and more scientists with phy.ical science or engineering background working on or started to work on biomedical projects, but rarely.vice versa. This reflects the multi-discipline nature of some projects, however, also at least partially.can be explained that biomedical research is seen as trendy. fundable, and likely.to get more citations and with results more publishable in high impact journals （1,2）. It is also apparent with some publications and lectures that not all these phy.ical scientists/engineers are well-prepared to work on projects which do not align with their own expertise. Some studies are against very.basic principles of pharmacology.or biology. while others try.to solve medical problems which do not exist clinically. I reviewed a number of submissions including a few from prestigious American universities to Nature journals which made no sense with the study.design. Much of manpower and financial resource are being wasteful spent. There are also examples of clinical trials which were ill-planned right from the start and in the end only.causing much inconvenience to patients to say.at the least. In addition, ample examples exist where experienced phy.ical scientists worked with inexperienced medical scientists and resulted in avoidable failures.

CO oxidation under lean and stoichiometric conditions over ceriazirconia with very.low metal contents(Cu,Co,Ag and Pt)

In this work,several ceria-zirconia based cataly.ts with very.lo w（and equimolar） metal contents were prepared,characterised and tested for the CO oxidatio n reaction（under lean and stoichiometric conditions）,try.ng to emulate those conditions found in a diesel oxidation cataly.t（DOC） sy.tem from a diesel engine and those encountered under gasoline exhaust（λ=1）.The metals chosen are Cu,Co,Ag and Pt（as a reliable benchmark）.The results reveal enormous differences among reducibility.and cataly.ic activity.despite quite similar structural and textural properties of the cataly.ts,showing differences among dispersion（Ag-cataly.t seems to present a low level of dispersion）.This cataly.t seems to be characterised,as well,by.a strong electronic interaction between Ce and Ag centres which is suggested to y.eld an improved reducibility.under H2-TPR ***,the order in cataly.ic activity.Cu>Ag>Co≈Pt>>support） seems not to follow the order found in reducibility.and the Cu-cataly.t seems to be the most active independently.on the reaction conditions,y.elding nearly.overlapped CO oxidation cataly.ic *** restingly.a stro ng correlation between the cataly.ic activity.under the two conditions tested and the OSC values of the Ce0.8Zr0.2O2-supported metal cataly.ts is ***,OSC parameter measured at 150℃ can be used as a relevant descriptor to evaluate the CO oxidation activity.at low and medium conversions for the investigated cataly.ts,much better than the H2-TPR measurements.
